One of my favourite underrated features is the custom mode dial on top. I love that I can set 4k60 to C1, 4k24 to C2 and then 1080/180fps to C3. I wish every camera I've used had this.
Yes, I also use the custom modes constantly. But somehow the GH5 doesn´t store the white balance and shutter speed. Everytime I change the custom mode dial from the manual mode to e.g. C1, then I have to setup the white balance again. Is there a newer firmware available or did I miss a feature?
Totally agree! It is actually key to a good "hybrid" cam, which the G7 is for me. It's the simple things that make a huge different when out in the field...
I think the GH series gets a bad rep for its auto focus. Its great for photos, but professionally speaking, not useful for video other then those video loggers. I video log, I use the app, set focus and do my thing without concern of what Cannon and Sony are doing. And if you watch their systems, their auto focus is not perfect either. It may do a good job locking on to the subject, but it still does small focus hunting that can be seen. Very unprofessional if you ask me.
How is the GH5 not good professionally speaking? It's amazing quality, ease of use, and so much more like explained in this video. ONLY downsides are small sensor=low light and less bokeh, and auto focus. But "professionals" are supposed to use MANUAL. And bokeh full frame look is nice, but it's story and ability to sell over all else.
I think you miss read or I miss wrote my intent. What I meant is auto focus is not a professional feature, its amateurs that wine about autofocus. Story in mind, if they need it for their work, then sure, having a better auto focus feature is a benefit that the GH5 lacks. The GH5 is what I have and I would not even trade it for the GH5s. If I could ever afford it as a B-Cam, I might, but the in-body stabilization plus picture abilities makes it the best camera system for my needs.
What would be one of the best lenses to pair with the GH5, value wise. I wanted to use mine for interviews and some vlogging, also some cinematic filming. Thanks in advance.
Got the Gh5 and GH5s. For my production, they will complement each other. The GH5 for running around and the GH5s for low light situations. Secondly, many clients don’t really care about the different depth of field. Some of them don’t know what it is. All they see is blurred out background. And thirdly, if you even intend to graduate into Cinema styled cameras like the Reds, Arri and Ursa, it’s better to learn how to shoot with MF except all you do is Vlog. But then you can get a smaller camera for you Vlog such as the a6300 or a6500. As usual, thanks for this video. You teach us an enormous amount of stuff that you can’t imagine. Kudos. Hats off. Waiting for the next video.
I recently acquired the Lumix G85 and I was surprised, I am happy with Panasonic and now I go for this camera! Thanks for the review! I think that my days are left behind with other brands. By the way, excellent channel!
I've been following this channel for a while now and it just keeps getting better and better and better. Many thanks for all the thinking and the work you'r putting out there for us Caleb.
Panasonic is definitely on top of their MFT game. Although there is no such thing as THE perfect camera, Panasonic leads the pack in this sensor size. Another great review! Caleb's the reason I bought my GH4, and I couldn't be happier with it. It doesn't matter what kind of fancy gear you have, it's about what you do with whatever you have. Keep the great videos coming!
I think Panasonic really created something amazing here. I however decided to go with the G9 for my video creation as I was very impressed with the autofocus and the stabilization. Great video!
Sir, I just sold my Canon 1DX Mark ii to get a GH5 set up. It only took one look at 6K Photo mode to wonder why the whole semi-pro industry isn’t screaming about this camera! I was filming eagles with an 800mm in 6K!!! It looked incredible. Great review and very fair outline. Too many people criticize as a way to be relevant. And nobody just praises a company for the choices it made. I was tired of Canon producing a powerhouse like the 1DXii and then breaking its legs when it came to video. The Panny5 kills it dead!
Thanks for the info Caleb! I came to Gh5 from my old Canon Mark iii 2 monthes ago and I always learning with this camera, as you mentioned. Everytime I find something new with this cam, really start to love it more and more. So many new capabilities!
Wow, I am blown away by your review. I watched it on my 4k Eizo Display. Its so crisp and clean and the lightning is amazing. I want to buy the gh5 or the gh5s... I think I have to wait until you made a comparison video. THX for your work !
Great review Caleb! We are spoilt for choice these days. Those complaining about DR, there are plenty of other options out there, but as an owner of the GH5 (I made the jump from my A7s mk 1) I’ve been blown away (and a little overwhelmed) by the seemingly endless capacities built into this camera. The real challenge now isn’t scrutinising specs but going out and utilising the capabilities of this beast and making something worthwhile!
Thank you so much for the non-babbling, to-the-point, yet thorough review of this camera. I'm new to all of this and have watched a ton of reviews and yours was the most comprehensive, and surprisingly the shortest. Oh, and now I'm a NEW SUBSCRIBER. 😊
DUDE! What a reviewer this is just great! I picked up a GH5 S the other day and Love it! I really like how you note "education" you are absolutely correct! I have come off 80% canon usage and was hiring GH4/5 for different shoots and needs and yes - This camera is ahead of its time in this price range In particular and you can go deep deep down the rabbit hole of technical filmmaking and equipment operating! greetings from Melbourne Australia!
Lovely, balanced and unbiased review, Caleb! I moved from Canon to the GH5 with native lenses and I'm loving every bit of it. It's such a great camera!
One thing a lot of people forget to mention when they talk about field of view and what not is that a lot of current ff cameras crop in to 1.3 or 1.4 in 4k. The gh5 with a speedbooster XL is a 1.28 crop, which is very very close to the ff look :)
Great overview of the camera! My team mainly shoots Canon full frame, but the GH5 is our go to when shooting 4k and 6k video that will be stitched into a panorama 360 tour. Great results and that is why it will be in our bag for awhile.
That 4:3 shooting mode is almost like cheating. And no IS in GH5s, no buy from me. Still convinced the GH5 is the idea camera for my needs, just gotta budget one.
Ive been run and gun this week on my GH5 S with a sigma art 24- 105 EF and I've been enjoying it! as a filmmaker in camera IS doesn't worry me to much as we are mostly rigged up with a tri pod or gimbal. If you're a Vlogger I could see it being a bit of an issue however I feel there are plenty of lens options that with a steady hand will allow for enjoyable great content :)
I think there are two more reasons to avoid the GH5: the G85 and the G95. They're not quite on par with the GH5, but they produce very good video in their own right and cost significantly less. They are more than good enough for most video shooting situations. I love my G85! The new G95 adds a headphone jack, VLog, and 1080p / 120 fps to the G85, making it even better.
Wonderful review! The Gh5 is my fave. I love the tele zoom, I have it customised to the top end the shutter button for a bit of extra zoom :) watching this has made me realise that while I think I know my camera inside out now, it might be worth trying different customisations. And I REALLY need to tinker with anamorphic 📸
Ugh, I want it so bad, but I already have a GH4 and that camera covers all of my needs splendidly for now. I just love Lumix cameras - the ergonomics and menus blow Sony out of the water. Great review!
Great review, appreciate its a little dated now. Purchased GH5 in 2019 and it's just fantastic. Will get howled down by many but love the AF - its fabulous and much better than Canon 70d was using before. Using native lenses.
The names confuse me so much. Gh5, gh5s, Gh5 4k all have different megapixels, but you can't look them up easily on seller sites like eBay. I'm not even sure which camera this video is for, because it's like 10.2 mega pixels for the basic 5.
I love my GH5. Even with the GH5s coming out, I don't think I'll be trading in my GH5 for it. But I'll probably get the GH5s as a companion for it for those situations where I need high ISOs. But the IBIS really has changed how efficiently I can shoot at weddings, events, and even in some commercial applications. But I agree...I tried Sony for a bit and the image just fell apart compared to the GH5. Great review Caleb! Thanks for taking the time to put it together.
Fantastic review. The only place where you lost me was that I was unable to get the back scroll wheel to change ISO as it seems that up/down/right/left was my only button customization option. And, along the same lines the ExTel did not seem to react to the on off toggle the same way as it does when I go directly into the menu and do it. User error I am sure. Anyway thanks for the great review!
Awesome yet a bit different review, Caleb! Looking forward to your GH5s coverage. I'm still rocking the G7 with Metabones speed booster and Sigma 18-35. Stellar image quality but I feel I've grown out of the G7. Also, it has quite a few limitations.
Ha! Same for me. I LOVE the G7, and it served me very well (still does). But just like you said, you grow out of it and as you advance you start to look for an upgrade.
Jeff Bulan G7 starts a new file to record video every time your recording surpasses 4gb file size. It doesn’t stop recording but you sometimes lose 1 or two frames in the transition from 1 4gb part of your recording to the next. (Fixed in g85 I think) And the g7 doesn’t have the great in built body stabilization the g85 offers. G85 also has a bit better low light than g7.
Build quality is noticeably worse than the GH4/GH5, the camera is not weather sealed (I mostly shoot outdoors), HDMI out does not work properly (external monitor goes blank after you hit a record button), camera's preamps are just horrible if you want to connect a lav mic directly to the camera. I bought a Beachtek pre-amplifier to fix that but still, the sound recording quality is bad (my Sony A6300 is miles better). Also, it has very bad autofocus, there is no headphone jack. Finally, SD card slot is on the bottom of the camera..... it's a freaking pain to take it out once you have your camera fully rigged up.
Hey, Caleb! I love your videos - thanks for putting so much time and effort into them. I was hoping you could address one issue I've discovered with the IBIS and Dual IS on the GH5 when using native lenses, and share any thoughts you might have. The IBIS is incredible hand-held, and I have no issues with it. But I've discovered that it "sleeps" when mounted on a tripod and left static for a second or two. When it sleeps, it's like the lens and sensor are not stabilized at all and any tripod bump or any start to a panning motion reveals a nasty pop in the frame as the IS mechanism "wakes up" again. This stands in contrast to Canon IS behavior, which is constantly stabilizing whether the camera is moving or not. I really hope that Panasonic addresses this issue in a firmware update because I would really like to invest in native glass instead of adapting to Canon. For your orientation, I do a lot of event video at long focal lengths with slow, smooth pan and zoom motion, so this issue is really central to the kind of projects I shoot. Have you experienced this, and do you want to comment on it? Thanks again for making such great videos - please keep them coming!
Hey Caleb, Love your videos man... Keep up the great work! I have a question and was hoping you'll be able to help me. I am looking to upgrade from my G85. But I'm debating which one t go for? GH5 or G9? I'm a video blogger and the G85 is more than enough for now. Looking to upgrade as I'll be traveling around the world and wanna do some good traveling vlogs. So I need something better and cost effective. I have my micro for third lenses ... So it's only the body. Appreciate your feedback.
I don't watch many of your videos but jesus christ that was a good video. The shots around 8:25 are enough to buy this camera. The idea of shooting that in anamorphic 6k and then punching in sounds so nice. What lens did you shoot that scene on?
I'm on the edge of my seat in buying this camera. The only thing that holds me back from the "buy now," button is the sensor size and the autofocus that I've heard a lot of people complain about. I need a great photo camera for food pics, a you tube channel camera, and a cinema camera all in one since I'm an amateur and need an all in one. Thoughts?????
@@ChrisTopheRaz Since the last update I have noticed a big improvement with AF, specifically eye autofocus. I have noticed it works better with certain lenses. For example, the 10-25 1.7 has been the best AF I have personally used on GH5. I think it's usable just not always reliable.
Curious to hear if you still so enthusiastic about that camera now, 6 months later. I just bought it anyway because it's all i can afford, would have rather bought the GH5S, but for me it was still a significant increase in price with a lens, and don't really need 4K DCI. Bit bitter about the improvement for low light shooting, and maybe better autofocusing improvements, but coming from where i come from... the GH5 is still the best camera i've ever owned. Thanks for the review. CHeers.
Agree that f1.4 on m43 sensors will not get you near full frame sensors. I just switched from the G85 & Gh4 to a Canon 6D for film. All I can say is I won’t be going back to micro four thirds for a while now. Full frame is AWESOME!!! That shallow depth of field (T__T) $$$$$
Hey Caleb, congrats on your channel, very useful for us filmmakers on a budget out there. Quick question: what is up with the horizontal nato rail on the front of your handle? Curious to know what you really use on this rig. Keep it up!
Just bought the Gh5s coming from a c100, looks like I’ve got lots to learn here but that image quality blows my canon gear away. Do you have any videos on how to do custom set ups in the menu?
Can you make a video explaining, possibly the biggest hurdle in a creators life: convincing your wife to let you buy all the stuff. Because you seem to have it down & the rest of us may need some help in that area. 🙃
Joshua Leonor , there is a technique called “conditioning”. It takes a while to perfect, but when you do, you can condition your wife to let you buy almost anything! I now own soo much stuff that I don’t need, but just want that it’s ridiculous! Good luck!🍀
Hahaha I hear ya. Really, the secret is to find the right companion who understands that your passions and interests are very important to you, and that they're worth whatever you're willing to pay for them. As long as you're not taking food off of your family's table to support your Gear Acquisition Syndrome, then have at it! Do I sound like I'm justifying my own obscene investment in guitars, amplifiers, recording equipment, and now cameras? Maybe just a little... :D
You need to buy it sneakily, receiving the box at the job and quickly unbox it and add to your other stuff, she will eventually notice but later on haha. I'm doing the quick unboxing thing on my woodshop tool purchases and it works well ! xD
You are thorough and clear...good work. One question, what is the final use of such a high quality video? My guess is very limited feature film industry. This is overkill for even broadcast television.
Hi Caleb, nice video, and a very good camera. I bought one a month ago, and I'm loving it. Looking to find some older (used) glass to try out, any recommendations? (By the way, nice appearance on Scott McKeena's Podcast, I enjoyed your talk a lot)
Caleb, all your videos are fantastic. I was just going back through some reviews on the GH5. Havent had the chance to use it yet. Your giving it some crazy props. Your opinion about this being the best camera (at that time) is interesting. Didnt this compare with the Sony a7iii and the EOS R back then (or at least the Sony?). I have to research the look of the GH5 (and V-log) but lets be honest, Sony has their own problems (overheating) but do you honestly think the Panasonic, or Canon features/menu system even come close? The Sony is the most professional camera (in terms of features, menus, log options, low-light, etc...) Do you disagree (perhaps looking back at your older work?). Thanks for all the content bud.
One of my favourite underrated features is the custom mode dial on top. I love that I can set 4k60 to C1, 4k24 to C2 and then 1080/180fps to C3. I wish every camera I've used had this.
oh hey, look at who is here. I love your content
I use Custom Modes on my G7 constantly. I'm surprised no one is mentioning it in their reviews.
I do this on my Sony A7S and A6500 too :)
“Autofocus is the Hill many modern shooters are willing to die on” 😂😂 This needs a t-shirt design
If I could ever afford it as a B-Cam, I might, but the in-body stabilization plus picture abilities makes it the best camera system for my needs.
ohhhhh i gotchaaaa haha, yeah auto focus is not needed for professional use, although handy in run and gun situations. Stay frosty bro haha
Yeah its pretty dumb but hey, if you're a vlogger I could see why you'd be upset!
I need to upgrade my channel to 4K! And this video help me a lot!
THX
Kudos. Hats off.

Good overview Caleb. I'm definitely loving my GH5. Does everything I need and more. AF and low-Light are not deal breakers for me.
Thanks! Same here!
Another great video, Caleb. Thanks for making it. Would you mind sharing your audio-recording set-up? Sounds great!

Great review as always! I’d loooooovvvee to hear your thoughts on the GH5s sometime :)
Amazing video, now I love more my GH5! Thank you.
Wasnt this uploaded already?
Great review. Please review technicolor cinestyle and EOSHD cLog for canon cameras.
How do you change the function of the control dial to select ISO?
Finally figured that out myself: Custom Settings > Operation > Dial Set. > Control Dial Assignment > ISO
Hey Caleb,
Love your videos man...
Fine for me even at 2021-2022, dof is not an issue.
1700 now brand new + free copy of V-Log! Can't beat it. Just ordered
I want the gh5 with full frame sensor in a t3i cost and a 28-75mm f2.8 for 50 mm f 1.8 price 😂. Any recommendations for me ?. I will wait
I don't watch many of your videos but jesus christ that was a good video. The shots around 8:25 are enough to buy this camera. The idea of shooting that in anamorphic 6k and then punching in sounds so nice. What lens did you shoot that scene on?
Curious. Why are you showing a Canon camera while discussing the GH5--starting @ 8:25.
he's filming that footage with the GH5 to show how his B-Roll has improved.
Very informative video...well-produced and to the point. Helps make an informed decision.
AF isn't that bad now. It's usable.
Dan Lowder did they update the software? Or do you mean in the gh5s?
@@ChrisTopheRaz Since the last update I have noticed a big improvement with AF, specifically eye autofocus. I have noticed it works better with certain lenses. For example, the 10-25 1.7 has been the best AF I have personally used on GH5. I think it's usable just not always reliable.
Is there a difference between gh5L vs gh5?
Most Cinematographers don't use auto focus. Can't remember the last time I used AF when shooting video.
Best GH5 review I’ve ever seen awesome information brother
Thank you Mario! Glad you enjoyed it.
What is that thing on top of the GH5??? Audio adapter?
Yes! Finally! Buying this camera in a few weeks!
The Filmmaker's Notebook Thanks!
Nice Echo!!!
:) Thanks so much!
Yeah, best camera Ive ever had. Good luck to you!
Awesome review! This will make a great B camera for my BM UMP. Love the fact that it's 4:2:2
Thanks Erik!
for someone who uses old cine lenses--totally manual--autofocus is an alien concept :)
Can you suggest some to me ? I have Fujifilm XT3 with kit lens
CHeers.
Great vid, is this still the best value for 2021?
Really great light on the table at the end of the video! Lightning tutorial please!
ZEEK.A if just the Video quality wasn't that bad. The 6D MKII still is on 2009 levels in terms of video quality.
True. 6D with Magic Lantern and 14 bit raw rocks!
THANK YOU FOR THIS GREAT REVIEW!!! Still in doubt though if I'll take it or not but it's definitely a great camera to shoot with!
Your audio is awesome! What mic or audio accessories did you use?
Top notch as always. Does ETC mode effect low light ability at all?
Hey Caleb, congrats on your channel, very useful for us filmmakers on a budget out there. Quick question: what is up with the horizontal nato rail on the front of your handle? Curious to know what you really use on this rig. Keep it up!
Your color grading is phenomenal. Do you have any tutorials on that?
Wouldnt 2X anamorphic on a 4k image be using the full resolution to capture twice as much info and therefore be 2K when stretched out?
Very informative and objective review. Thanks mate
Just bought the Gh5s coming from a c100, looks like I’ve got lots to learn here but that image quality blows my canon gear away. Do you have any videos on how to do custom set ups in the menu?
NICE. how exactly are you lighting the white table top products specifically at 8:25?
B&H was a huge contributor to my failed marriage.
He played the wife card! Lol. Joshua, I just did it. However, after buying my wife a new BMW, what's a couple grand?! lol.
Really good review, and excellent visuals, is the Gh4 still worth it then seeing as its cheaper than a G85 for me?
I’ve had the GH5 for almost a year now and love it. Any chance you will dive into the HDR formats in future uploads?
I absolutely love my GH5 with the 12-35 2.8 and 40-150 2.8 ❤️
Hi Caleb, nice video, and a very good camera. I bought one a month ago, and I'm loving it. Looking to find some older (used) glass to try out, any recommendations? (By the way, nice appearance on Scott McKeena's Podcast, I enjoyed your talk a lot)
Great review. What cage is that for the GH5 are you using?
