- august 2023 and the game runs great on xenia canary, i haven't tried playing through the full game from the beginning but i have played random levels on a 100% save file and it works perfectly. i still think the game needs a pc port, but xenia is the best we have right now

Fun fact: Unleashed was originally developed and demonstrated on PC in Windows XP.
They already have (had) the PC builds, but they never shipped them.

It’s funny how the games that needed the Pc ports the most were the ones that never got one, if Unleashed and 06 had PC ports nowadays we would had the definitive version of both games already thanks to modders

Despite Unleashed being in "Ingame" status, it actually runs quite well on RPCS3, provided that your PC has a fast and powerful CPU like the Intel Core i7-12700K or i9-12900K. Then enable Full Width AVX-512 (need to have the E-cores disabled in the BIOS settings to make this work), then making sure the game is updated to the latest version, then use the patches. You get a pretty stable 60fps.
I hear it runs decently on the Canary build of Xenia. I haven't tested it out myself 'cause I need to upgrade my GPU.
But yeah, I wholeheartedly agree. Unleashed desperately needs a PC port. And the main reason for this is because I wanna play it on-the-go on my Steam Deck.

Ingame status on RPCS3 is nowadays usually reserved for games that run like dogshit on something Zen 2 tier in performance. Zen 4 & 12th Gen w/ AVX-512 will easily eat through most in-game titles no problems with otherwise as if they were playable titles.

I've seen videos of people emulating Sonic Unleashed on RPCS3 with an i5-9600K and they get mostly playable performance, though nowhere near as good as an i9-12900K. Look up "How to Play Sonic Unleashed with RPCS3 on Intel i5" from 3godzilla3.
The i5-9600K is around $200-$250 for a brand new one on eBay. That would be more up your alley.

Sonic Unleashed is STILL the most graphically complex and beautiful Sonic game, Sonic's model has the most polygons ever seen, and it's from 2008. I guess this was the last "big-budget" Sonic game after all.
It doesn't need a remaster, its absolutely fine the way it is.

Xbox Series X does an even better job than the Xbox One now. A full 60fps with zero drops period. Even in the jungle area where we all remember those terrible performance hits down to 20 fps. It's a shame we had to wait this long for the perfect experience until now. But in all fairness this engine was way ahead of its time

they ported sonic lost world to pc and that wasnt a well received game so there is hope
@@saleerix I think Sega wanted to make some quick bucks off Sonic Lost World because it was a relatively short game but Unleashed is way longer so they didn't want to bother porting that game on pc.

Exactly. The game honestly still looks better than any other Sonic game that's come out after it, even better than Frontiers. Goes to show what a good art direction can do, even for an old game. Just look at people trying to "remake" Unleashed in Generations and it's just such a downgrade
Increase the polycount? Not for Sonic and Werehog, they're still super high poly and Unleashed Sonic is still the highest poly Sonic model by a landslide.

Really disliked the few changes that were done in Colors Ultimate just for the sake of it instead of spending resources on fixing the game. The jade wisp is cool but not really that ground breaking in comparison to all the glitches the game had when it came out
@@kittbluevenom2384 I believe Sonic (Daytime) still stands as the highest poly count for regular Sonic, but Werehog has gotta be higher you're right. It's just crazy that Unleashed has the most detailed Sonic model, it's from 2008! And we've just been getting worse since then. I'm looking forward to playing Frontiers but I really don't like that it just uses the Forces model.

This game is actually completely playable at 60 FPS on the Xbox 360 Emulator with some crashes that will probably happen and I'm sure with a couple more updates to the emulator that will fix the crashes also I play it with a 9th gen I5 and a 1650
I got i5 4570(or something like that) and gtx 1060 3 gb graphic card with 8 gbs of ram(buying a ram is on my plans) and it works it on 60 fps %85 percent of the time (those other %15 are the times where game lags/frame drops for a second or jungle joyride laggy part)

As a Series X owner, I think everyone should be able to have a comparable experience playing the game as I do. The speed sections flow like butter!
A good port would fix the one problem I have with the backwards compatibility option: Resolution. Generations got FPS Boost at native 4K, while Unleashed is still stuck at 880x720. Doesn’t hold up well on a 4K display or even a larger 1080p one.
Throughout the years I've gotten used to 720p.
Honestly, it'd be a win-win for me anyway.
Ironically I think unleashed being at that resolution might have been the last step needed to make the game run at 60, as the games very intensive

Either that or after so many years I lost my sense of vision and anything bad looks acceptable to me.

@@Marc-rw3dd I say yes and no, yes on a base level no because I'm on Series S and generations not only got the fps boost but can have HDR and 4k resolution while unleashed is stuck at that weird 720p resolution ("720"p60 with fps boost)
I play sonic gens on my pc with a 750ti, and i actually play it 4k with better fxpipeline, it sometimes drops to like, 50 fps, but its simply too rare to happen
SEGA should port Sonic Unleashed with the latest Hedgehog Engine (a graphics engine), make the Werehog battle theme togglable, and leave everything else alone.
I mean Sonic Unleashed still does look like a modern game, and that could screw up some visuals like Colors Ultimate did, and yeah there definitely should be an option for the battle theme.
Please no. I don't see Sonic team or anyone managing to make Sonic Unleashed look better or play better than the original. Just port the original, that's it. Throw in some quality of life changes if y'all want to as long as it doesn't affect anything, otherwise, modders will do all the work for you. Just get the game on PC at all, SEGA
god no, hedgehog engine 2 looks terrible compared to unleashed, forces proves that... the game cant decide if its going to be cartoony or realistic at every moment, hedgehog engine 1 already did that better

There is a great guide on how to setup Unleashed on PC, using Xenia Canary, it takes some time but it's definitely worth it, since it has few game-breaking bugs, and runs at 4K unlocked FPS.
Wish it ran well on Steam Deck, though.

I've been dying to play this game since I've heard so many good things about it. Unfortunately, I don't have a Series X, PS3 or Xbox 360. I do have a Wii U, but the Wii conversion is basically a completely different game and I also don't have it.
I bought Unleahed for PS2 when I was still using it, I bought Unleashed for the PS3 when I found it, did buy every each DLC of it because of how complete and beautiful the game is for it's time until Generations that feels short in comparison on content.
Would buy it again if it gets a port even if is a terrible job like Colours Ultimate which just scares me on what could go wrong and the critics all over again trashing the game~...

We've gone from cross-console games being day and night different from each other (PS2 and PS3) to being almost spot-on but improved on graphically and performance-wise on new consoles (PS3 and PS4) to games just being effing re-releases like GTA V on PS5 or the GTA Trilogy just being an excuse to port the 3D trilogy to new consoles.
Fuck new console ports. Leave it to the console manufacturer to include Backwards Compatibility, something that should have been the norm but somehow got overshadowed by whatever the fuck has been going on since the launch of 8th gen consoles like Sony making Online paid, screwing up their first launch title for the PS4 (Killzone Shadowdall), Microsoft completely busting the Xbox One by removing the ability to play second-hand games and amidst all this the idea of *playing the games you own* has become an alien concept to some???
Thank fuck I swtiched from PS3 to PC when 8th gen launched. Haven't been happier since, now I'm able to play my entire library I've been building up for the past decade and even more so before that by just *playing what I already paid for*
At least Colors has alternative paths in its level design unlike Forces which has 0 alternate paths.
The closest thing we have to a PC version is the Xbox Series X/S because it runs Sonic Unleashed at 60fps although the resolution is still stuck on 720p..

Plays very well on an Xbox Series X, but a pc port is definitely needed, I’d also love to see the mods
we have a pc port and its called (Xenia) i could get 70 - 90 fps but it depends on your pc if you have a low end pc i guess you will get 40-60 fps and thats still much better than the original game and you can stop the game crashing using a mod called Sonic Unleashed fixes or (SU fixes) for short it is very easy to mod the game on pc just look for a tutorial on youtube and you are good to go also heres a list of mods that improved my experience and i recommend using them:
-No medal Requirements
-Homing Attack on Jump
-Sonic Unleashed 2k/4k Flashbang fix (only use for 2k or 4k resolution)
-SU fixes (Sonic Unleashed Fixes)
-Werehog's Fury (this is optional but i recommend it since it improves the werehog gameplay by making it more fast paced for example faster hits, faster movement....etc)
and you can play through the full game without a save file !!!!

Rubberduckycooly initially didn't even want to decompile Sonic Mania because that would take a lot of time (thpugh they still did it anyway), so decompiling a game like Unleashed would be a MASSIVE undertaking.
You can't just say "we should decompile X" as if it could be done with anything.
Well I got news for you. In xenia canary, you can now play the entirety sonic unleashed, day and night stages, no xenia unleashed or 100% saves, the full story, with only minor visual glitches and it's all thanks to the xenia canary vulkan renderer. And if you get really bad graphical bugs, just press f5

There are a ton of fixes for xenia unleashed to make it playable consistently on 60FPS on mid-range hardware and that fix any bugs or issues that could occur. There is no reason not to emulate it at this point

I want to give a heads-up that Unleashed on Xbox One does not have any performance improvements, due to it literally mimicing the xbox 360. The Xbox One X version of Unleashed, however, does have a performance improvement: It fares way better in having a consistent 30 FPS.

The PS3 has an uncapped framerate, sure, but it doesn't even hit 30 as often as the 360 version.
You didn't play Unleashed.
The PS3 version's framerate is all over the place, in fact it might be worse than the 360 version becaue at least they had the decency to cap the framerate at 30 on 360, on PS3 it's just a mess.
Both consoles show pretty poor performances in all levels, we know Jungle Joyride is the most intensive level but even Rooftop Run and Eggmanland have their bad moments too on original hardware.
PS3 Unleashed only runs at 60 FPS on Cool Edge, with framedrops. With a FPS counter you can see that it struggles to reach 30 FPS on the rest of the game, ESPECIALLY on the werehog stages, those were almost unplayable

What sucks is the ps3 version looks the best by far but I don't have a ps3, just the 360/ series x. I have a ps5 but I don't know if it can even run unleashed. A pc port could use the ps3 visuals and maybe even add the rtx mod from generations and still keep the 360 loading screens and ui.

The Ps3 is literally different shading and off tone coloring. It also uses V-sync "to get 60fps". Sonic unleashed is on PSNow, it does not run on PS5 hardware

@@Ayo090 in your Xenia canary config, change gpu to vulkan to avoid the crash, turn off vsync to get 60 fps (or higher with a great gpu)

Games emulated mostly run worse compared to real pc ports, because at least it was made for pcs and you can most likely use mods or optimize visuals to have it run perfectly

On my 7950x is runs with relative ease on this game thru rpcs3 altho b4 that I had a 10750h laptop which ran okay not the best for unleashed. Xenia was always there tho :p. Even on adabat tho that running section with the robots it drops to 35 to 40fps on the ps3 emulator. Pretty demanding I have to say. But yeah. Xbox emulator crashes alot more and u probz can't do start to finish like unleashed (where I finished it 3 times on that laptop to my desktop on rpcs3).

The framerate issue is fixed on the series x. It plays in 60fps on the series x as well

Don't worry the community will make this game reach 60 fps, emulators are evolving a lot, an example is Zelda: Breath of the wild on cemu running at 60 in 4k

nope, ps2 and mostly wii version can be played perfectly using emulators
Actually PS2 port of Sonic Unleashed is one of the easiest ps2 games to emulate. My old PC with a Intel Core i3 2nd gen and only a integrated graphics card was able to emulate it with stable 30fps
I use my own WII for that though.
It's playable if you ask me, i play games at 5 FPS sometimes. So 16 - 20 FPS is ok for my standards
hell nah anything under 24fps is unplayable, and anything 24-35 is barely playable

I wouldn't say it NEEDS a pc port however, it sure would be great to have a good pc port of unleashed.
Only way to properly play is through a PS3, Xbox 360 or Xbox Backwards Compatibility.
Emulators, whilst they technically do the job, really just amount to a mountain of issues overall. So yes, I'd say it'd *need* a PC port as the PC as a platform is just so open and overly versatile. Emulators put a limit on that because, well, hardware requirements...
Though I'm afraid even if we got a PC port they'd fuck it up performance-wise. I've literally haven't seen a game get ported to PC after so much time and not have a fuckton of graphical changes often to the worse. Like, if you expected a port of a 7th gen game to run on your 7-8th gen built PC you're subject to get laughed at apparently...?

The console market won't magically die out if unleashed gets a proper port.
Just like n64 did not need tomb raider to live, pc nor sonic fans need a pc port of unleashed to live.
It would be much appreciated don't get me wrong, however and this is a big however, to say they "need" it is atleast a bit of a stretch.

And it's not like the fanbase keeps Sonic living, not at all. Generations and Lost World are definetly not being sold and still modded on PC anymore.

Series S and X run the game no problem, hyper quick loads, and steady 60fps. I play it on my Series S.
Well yeah because it didn’t have to emulate the game for one. And it’s still at 720p anyways lmao
