I just have to say, I absolutely adore how much more atmospheric dimps tried to make the game even though it was on limited hardware. Small little things that people usually don't mention, like the way the HUD looks, or adding the prospect of the gaia gates, keeping with the original game's story, but making the time in which sonic explores the gates so much more immersive. Also: I think this is the ONLY sonic game that tells you IN THE LEVEL how much time you have to get a certain rank. Ik its small, but its such a nice deatail.

Honestly the atmosphere in UnWiished's night stages is what I want for Frontiers' open-zones. I love how moody and haunting stages like Cool Edge, Arid Sands and Jungle Joyride with its more ancient ruins aesthetic. Really makes them feel more mysterious, like you're traversing through the unknown and don't really know what's ahead.

You don’t even know how significant of a feature optional sun and moon medal collecting was for me a child. If I would’ve played the HD version growing up I’m sure I would’ve disliked the game just like everyone else around that time but because of Sonic Un”wii”shed, Unleashed instantly became my favorite game in the series and still is to this day giving me an overall appreciation for each version because of that small thing. If I had to back track and play levels over and over I would’ve dropped the game as a kid and Sonic might not be my favorite gaming mascot ever

I always wish we could've gotten a version of this game that combined elements from both versions of the game. While I wasn't big on the SD's version of boost back then, I think it actually makes for more compelling gameplay than the regular boost we have now. It would be cool to have HD Werehog's platforming with the SD versions segmented levels, the gaia temples were really cool locations to explore and their absence is highly felt in the HD version.
Also, I don't think Dimps (or whoever animated sonic in this version) get enough credit for how well Sonic animates and interacts with the environment in this game. That arm wave animation he does when he's falling through the air is tops and I actually really like how running into a wall dead on just has him get looney tuned along with running into walls while parallel to them having feedback as opposed to him just slipping off of them. It's actually a bit strange how full of life Sonic is in this game while his werehog counterpart just looks so dead by comparison.

But I never liked that much, and when I knew there was a "better" version, I forgot about the PS2 one. But some months ago I wanted to try it and complete it. And man, what a ride. I grew up with Unwiished on the PS2. For many years I was fascinated by the music and game environments they were able to recreate in a lower end hardware system. Playing the PS3/X360 version when a bit older, I started to enjoy it more but was missing certain features from Unwiished (Gaia Gates, Stage Acts, No Medal Requirements). Both versions excell at one point and fall short on another. If we get a remake of this game, it should include both versions' greater strengths.

I have completed Unleashed on PS2 and I loved the exploration of the Gaia Gates for collectibles as well as listen to the calming music.
I do wish we had stages for Mazuri and Empire City, especially since Mazuri was embedded into the story through cutscenes, the Egg Beetle boss fight and the location of the first temple of Gaia.
I also would have liked a better scoring system for ranks. Day time stages only need the player to beat a certain time and show you new records for segments of the stages. Night time stages consist of the player's finishing time and if they collected more orbs and rings past the end target.

Really loved the way you went into the Wii Day Stage's speedrunning depth! The learning curve in mastery is what always keeps me coming back to Sonic games, and this game does it masterfully. I think another cool part of how it encourages mastery is by having the S rank times be omnipresent as a ticking clock to encourage you to learn the stages inside and out. It's something I wouldn't mind seeing in later Sonic titles.

Unleashed SD is really a special game for me, I still play it nowadays in my old PS2. I have played Unleashed HD on a friend's console long ago, but I didn't have the opportunity to finish it (yet), and although I had a hard time in the Werehog stages, I really loved the experience, and I think I wouldn't suffer so much in those stages today. Now, I enjoy the Werehog stages a lot in SD Unleashed, but the major downside for me is that, as you stated, there are at least 3 acts with him in every continent plus the missions, while with hedgehog Sonic you get only one (aside from Apotos) plus the missions, and the daytime stages are the best part of this game (just like HD Unleashed). Still, one of my favorite Sonic games and one of my favorite games of all time.

i was lucky enough to play both versions in the past and one thing that always stuck with me about the wii version was how it rlly felt like you were getting to see and explore parts of these locations that you didn't in the hd version. like dragon road looks completely different and obviously part of that is the graphical downgrade but i can't help but feeling like we were seeing a new facet of a place we're already familiar with, and i think that gives the wii version more than enough merit to play through honestly

This was a great video! UnWiished is one of my favorite Sonic games, so it's always nice when it's not disregarded as "the lesser version" purely for being on older consoles. Also, while I definitely agree that the Werehog sections are too simple, the smaller stage lengths somewhat makes up for this for me. As someone who loves going for S-ranks, the fact that the stages can be beaten in less than seven minutes makes replays feel much less draining even if the Daytime/Werehog ratio isn't any different.

I played Unwiished for the first time a few months ago and the game is a strong contender for goat despite its flaws.(And yes, I am pretty confident that I have a vague understand of all its pros and cons by now and what would need to be improved to push this weird little game through the roof.)
1:39 Honestly, it really is. Even tho the werehog is getting kinda boring after a while(I mean, there are only like 2 attacks worth anything. Great balancing, devteam), the big advantage here is that even if the sections are as long or even longer compared to Unleashed, we get more varried setpieces and environments. Like how we actually get an ice temple in holoska that just straight up doesn't exist in Unleashed...or heck, the Dark Gaia furnace in Eggmanland that is only mentioned in a single cutscene in Unleashed. This is really the full Sonic world adventure-experience. And even then, the Unwiished-werehog also has the advantage of not having critical attacks and narrow walks, which are gimmicks that take away more from the experience than they add.
Of course, the werehog is still the lesser part of the game(if we don't count the botched hubs) by a good margin. But I just personally feel as though there are upsides that undeservably go unappreciated in general discussion.

I think that the Unwished levels should be implemented into a hypothetical Unleashed Remaster. Imagine it as a reward for getting the Sol and Moon Medals in a country, instead of them being a mandatory collectable. Maybe they could also implement the Gaia Gates, and add the little quest that the SD had that involved getting the key for their entrance. Oh, and maybe they could implement Super Sonic as an endgame reward, being symbolized by the Chip Bracelet and with Chip being no longer there with you, just like how in Colors you could pick between playing with regular or Super Sonic.

This was my first contact with Sonic Unleashed.
Well... kinda, actually my first contact with Sonic Unleashed was with the PS2 version in 2010, here in Brazil consoles like PS3, Xbox 360 and even the Wii were stupidly expensive at the time so the PS2 became a gateway to those who wanted a console but couldn't afford so much, that's why I'm very grateful to Sega for releasing Sonic Unleashed on the PS2, years later I was able to see the Wii version and play the PS3 version, but still I keep the PS2 version fondly.
I love this version, even though it's not as complex or complete as the HD version, I love the design of the day stages and I honestly think the night stages are better in this version than the HD version especially because they don't last as long as the HD version. (and not have so much framerate drop)
I know it's almost impossible, but I hope the Wii/PS2 version is re-released someday, even if it's in the Playstation Plus classics catalogue, I honestly think it deserves as much recognition as the HD version.

I love Sonic Unleashed ... But only the HD version
I started with the SD version on ps2 , and came back to it recently and it sucks ... I'm okay with the shorter list of content , but what I'm not okay with is the controls .
The regular Sonic has the boost divided into bursts instead of continuous . I'm glad you like it , but for me it's just restrictive . I'm okay with the walls ruining the boost and having more limited controls with it , but I'm not okay with the fact that I can't control when I start or stop ( or at least how the game doesn't tell me ) .
For the Werehog , there's having to hold a button to hold onto a ledge , and tilting the analog stick repeatedly has Sonic dashing , which means there are a lot of times when I try to position myself and end up dashing into a pit . Also running at full speed translates into dashing in the game's dictionary , and attacking while " dashing " has Sonic lung forward in an uncontrollable sudden rush . Controlling him is like driving a manual car but without ever shifting to gear 1

I’m playing through it for the first time right now on my Wii U using Motion Controls. I think the Day Stages are kinda fun but the Jank and unresponsiveness of the controls annoy me a little, I guess if I practice more I’ll get better but I don’t really have the time for that right now. The Werehog stages are Meh, the Motion controls make it feel Tiring and boring because I’m just doing the same Arm Shaking every encounter and the Camera placement make depth perception a bit of a problem. I can go through the levels fine and I like that they’re Shorter but it does get frustrating and repetitive having 3 back to back. I’m still on Eggmanland Day so I can’t really give my complete thoughts on the game.

I actually played that game first on PS2/WII version as well, and I agree its a pretty good game, however for mr its impossible to compare to the HD version, the later is one of my all time favorite games, and besides all the aspects you mentioned on the video about the hd version, i feel like the hub world exploration is a very underrated topic when it comes to unleashed, i personally spend countless hours exploring it and doing the characters missions, and that was something that i as looking foward to when i only had the PS2 version.
    Good video man

Why am I revisiting this after only a month 😂, such a great video, I don’t think the wii version is worse outside of graphics I actually prefer the idea of some difficulty and potential to do more like rewarding skill, that was always my issue with sonic unleashed (HD), that the Wii version did so much better, it was just way, way too easy that there were points where all I did was hold boost with one hand, and boosting so much made boosting not even interesting and I’d want to not boost, in the wii version it might be better (in terms of boost and medals like you said especially, you don’t have to backtrack which sucks haven’t to go through everything again). Again, I love how the boost is something you want to use and rewarding, but the actual game doesn’t feel as good even though skill is rewarded (clunky, more stiff), so I think it balances out, and I’d consider it an extension or a medium difficulty if the HD is easy. Sonic generations isn’t in this video, but I do actually think it does a really good job making the game fun and controllable when boosting or if you don’t even touch the boost button

I really like that they made the boost a risk/reward kind of move for the Wii version. That's how it should be instead of hold boost to win.

This was also the version I played first, and to be honest I debated if I should get the HD version because of the metal collecting and the long Wearhog stages. But I got it anyway, and I still love them both equally.

It bothers me when people call the 360/PS3 version the "HD version". The game runs at 880x720, which is anamorphic 720p, not actual HD. I do what ExoParadigmGamer did and call it the "7th gen version" and Wii/PS2 the "6th gen version".

I have played the following 3D Sonic games: Frontiers, Colors (Wii/Ultimate), Unwiished, and Lost World 3DS.
Below is how I would rank them (gameplay first, then soundtrack):
Gameplay: Frontiers, Unwiished, Lost World, Colors (barring the fact that Lost World has two jump buttons; I just really like the controls and level design)
Soundtrack: Frontiers, Lost World, Colors, Unwiished

You know, if there was ever a way someday to have all the SD day and night stages remade in HD and have all the scrapped content from SD created and reimagined in a way that would work for SD if it wasn't scrapped then both versions would be perfect and go together nicely.
But my opinion is the opposite of the video. For HD the day stages are more fun and intense at times with a good sprinkle of challenge/ the night stages I've grown to appreciate and my absolute favorite stages from day and night in that version are mostly due to the set pieces. Riding a sled across a humpback whale, running down a wooden Chinese dragon, climbing the spagonia clock tower, the beautiful scenery and northern lights in night holoska are so iconic to me. (Also people forget that that the HD version *still* in fact has the aurora borealis for some reason probably due to how it's presentation in SD.)
The only problem was in the night stages, and that it's only problem was how the later stages started to become too punishing with the platforming and every 5 seconds had very difficult combat sections.
Now, not to make the SD version look bad or the hardware limitations, but it's day stages had WAY TOO much emphasis on odd pixel perfect platforming segments and the awkward gimmicks with the controls made the levels far too artificially difficult and lacked a good chunk of enemy placement.
The night stages are absolutely better than it's upgraded counterpart with it's structure.
It had more main levels to go through, great platforming segments throughout, balanced the amount of combat including even how often the battle music would play in the levels. The exploration felt more rewarding and there were set pieces even the HD version didn't have at all! No waterfalls in chun nan besides one dlc stage, adabats dangerous whirlpools, spagonia's massive aqueduct bridge stage that was insanely fun and a genius twist to it's day time version of that segment.
Both versions day and night content are absolutely better than what the people give credit for.

Its funny i grew up woth the HD version then a couple years ago i played the ps2 version my take away was that i enjoyed the more fast paced style of the HD version but the ps2 had atmosphere and some general good decisions, like you pointed out medals being on Rank completion than exploration, the learning curve for accessing shortcuts, and the puzzle elements in the gaia temples which despite being relatively useless rewards were fun to complete. And one thing the ps2 version does better than HD, you can actually hear the night themes play and the variations in set pieces to make segments unique rather than blantant copy paste is so understated.

I played this version for the first time last year on dolphin and i was really surprised by how good it is was and even found myself getting addicted to the daytime stages the game has a few cool mods that make it even better like a 60 fps patch and a texture swap that makes the game more aesthetically like the HD version

  • @msgameandcake628

I feel like a good point to elaborate on would be the hub world differences. I mean, the HD version brought back actual explorable hub areas, something fans of the original Adventure have wanted for a long time! And then people seem to... really not like them. Resulting in the point-and-click replacement in the SD version to be seen as better in some ways, as they no longer take up as much time, and allow one to get back to the core gameplay faster.
This isn't the only way in which the SD version has been praised as "better" for technically having less content, either. The two Tornado levels are also absent, and are likewise often praised for being removed. Throw in the entirely different implementation of Medals, and basically any content that would prevent someone from going straight from one level to the next is either entirely gone or dramatically reduced in scale and time.
In replacement of all of this would be the Gaia Temples, which are all but entirely optional. Of course, if one does decide to check out the Gaia Temple areas, there are some pretty neat platforming puzzles that use Sonic transforming between Day and Night modes in unique and creative ways. Possibly a better implementation of such a switching mechanic than Eggmanland HD?
Its just kind of interesting to think about, basically all extra side content gets cut and this is often viewed in a positive light. Surely some substantial, worthwhile content gets lost in the transition.

Kinda of a hot take, but i always loved the unwished version of the werehog stages, maybe even more than the HD version.
I know that the werehog is for some reason nerfed here (fun fact, he hays way more moves and combos to use against enemies to use if you "unleash" his full power, but the game never tells you this, that's why I imagine most people don't know about this) but i think the level design in this version is so much better and much cooler IMO, since it has a bigger focus on exploration and plataforming than the levels in the HD version, and even then, i think these stages looks so nice on this version, like for example how in chun nan you start in a temple in a lagoon, just to make your way to a small forest, climb a waterfall and end the stage off running thought the great wall of china, while in the HD version you just stay in the lagoon, or spagonia, where you start in the streets, then start running through rooftops (hehe) and finish while trying to climb a giant aqueduct, but in the HD version 90% of the stage you're just running through the same streets and doing some dumb "push a block on top of a button" puzzle. I know that the HD has a much better resolution, light effects, 3D models and what not, but i genuinely thing that they way the stages were builded and how the scenery looks is much better in the Wii version.

the wii/ps2 day stages feature a gameplay style that i think no other sonic game, or any game to my knowledge, has ever pulled off and i think we'll never see again, which is a shame. its a nice blend of resource management distinct from the continuous boost games, but stands apart in how aware of the environment you have to be to make the most of it. literally peak boost gameplay and i hope we have a remaster or something so its not just totally lost to time

I was in the same boat you were back when Unleashed came out. Couldn't afford to get a 360 so I had to settle with the Wii version. I personally enjoyed it back then and thought it was neat how they used motion controls for the Werehog stages. Then 4-5 years later, I finally get my own 360 and sure enough, I finally got to play Unleashed the way it was intended. Amazing game and definitely far superior to it's Wii counterpart. However, that doesn't mean it was bad at all. Would like to revisit the Wii version someday. Maybe if SEGA remastered this game, they would somehow put both games into one. That would be cool!

The Wii was my first console not long after launch and Unwiished was my introduction into the sonic games as a young kid. Back then I never knew the Wii version of the game was different so when I got an Xbox 360 in 2018 I was shocked to find out how different the 360 version of the game was. That being said I think the Wii version will always be my favorite version since that’s what I grew up playing but I love both versions of the game so much

I was blown away when I played the day time mission for the first time, I had no clue what to expect and was blown away. I agree that the wii version being a bit janky with how the boost works actually makes it a more interesting game as you actually need to master the mechanics and make sensible tradeoffs when it comes to boosting. One thing I would like to see is a similar treatment for the homing attack, it's far too op as it is. There needs to be a way to make it more mechanically interesting but also rewarding when used to it's fullest effect!

To be honest I prefer the wii version of the night stages because they focus more on platforming to make up for the lack of depth in the combat system, which wasn't particularly great in HD anyway. It might be if it's your first exposure to the type of gameplay Unleashed's night stages offer, but playing games similar games like DMC, Bayonetta, and Metal Gear Rising pretty much makes Unleashed HD feel like baby's first beat em up/hack and slash, and it was already called a babyfied God of War from the beginning.
