Strato saws typically want to be run full throttle due to design of the carburetor. I do love my 592 and it’s being sent off to get ported now. They do offer a file guide specifically for Xcut. Love the video series man it’s really cool. It is hard to keep everything even. Thanks for sharing

I started using the husky roller guide gadget when hand filing. It is a game changer along with raker depth gauge and flat file. I’m sharpening old chains that hit nails back to factory or better.

I file my X cut Husqvarna chain with 7/32 round file and began by placing the file or holding the file to match the factory angles by eyeball. It was pretty standard and just like listed in the owner manual. However, to really duplicate that cut, my first full stroke was pushing back into the tooth as usual, then the second pushing back and down, the third pushing back and up slightly. I think Buck'n BillyRay does something like that too. It still cuts really fast and holds its edge. Agree about old dry old dry oak. Recent giant black oak (red oak family) standing dead for 18 years was hard as concrete and I really got a work-out filing my chains every tank of fuel.

Bodie, first off your doing a great job. I Subscribed because of this series. This is my humble opinion, I feel your over thinking this to much. I know you want to keep it as fair as possible but I think this is just real world as it gets. Once your out in the wood your going to encounter all different stages of wood condition. This series is perfect for showing overall or average performance. So keep up the excellent work and don’t forget to film yourself wacking off!! TH-cam channels take a while to get rolling strong so hang in there and everything will turn the bend in its own good time.

I use Stihl 2 in 1 sharpener with 13/64 file on 3/8 chain. Takes down depth gauges at same time as cutter. Can go back for gullet if you want but cuts fine without.

the 2 in 1 is great to start out with, but they have the rakers set too high to cut fast. still gotta take the rakers down further if you want a chain that is faster than out of the box.

Thank you I will try a smaller file on my chain.

I “believe” that the X-cut chain DOES take a special file type. Stihl is talking about releasing the file to the United States, but it (in typical EPA fashion) will take some time to happen. BUT when you go to use that file you MUST make sure to start with a new and never sharpened chain. It’s just that picky. That file is likely to be more expensive than a square file chain is, but that’s how it is with new tech. Check it out for what I’m talking about on some of the Stihl chains that also have not hit the states yet. Maybe that will help clear up some confusion.
Full disclosure here: I’ve not yet had the pleasure to see what an X-cut chain profile looks like, just an educated guess. But it’s like the H.P. wars of the 60’s, everybody’s trying to outdo each other. That Stihl chain uses a special hexagonal file with a flat spot (non machined) intentionally on the bottom and top. The
Bottom is flat and the top has something strange going on but I forget what it looks like exactly. It’s going to (hypothetically) give you a cross between a round and square.

Try oregon EXL chain, comparable to C85 xcut but cheaper

I have both. Haven't had the chance to try both in the same log. No trees to cut sadly.

Very cool video. I think what would be a cool test to the saws 592 xp and 2100 saws put a 36 inch bar and cut a big oak log 3ft in dia. I think the 2100 may beat the 592xp but maybe not would be interesting to see.

Gotta switch to Oregon EXL.. it’s way more affordable and cuts with Xcut all day. I use both Xcut and EXL on my work saws and I prefer the EXL.

I have picked up x-cuts in bulk cheaper than the ex but, I haven't yet compared the two, should be something to try for sure.
