I saw the trd supra in Dusseldorf, Germany. Beautiful car but i guess it was just a supra with added badges as it had the original Toyota badge. Still very cool tho i still have pics of that beauty

So the JGTC Supra used a few different 4 cylinder engines through its JGTC life. The first known as the 503E (2.1L) was used between 1994-1996 and had roots in the IMSA program. For 1997-1999, an engine based off the WRC corolla engine, known as the 171F (2.0L) was used. From 1999 onwards, the 171F was replaced by the 244F (still 2.0L) until the 2002 season, ultimately being replaced by the 3UZ-FE NA V8 engine when the regulations changed. Two teams used the 2JZ in the JGTCC for a brief period in 1994 (not sure on the specific dates); Team Blitz and Shift Point with neither team successful. The 2JZ was never suited to circuit racing, being heavy and Toyota already had a lightweight, reliable, race engine available.

It's not like Pontiac is the only brand to have sold a GTO in America, there were also Ferraris (where Pontiac stole the name from in the first place). The only thing is that people wouldn't have reacted well to a Japanese GTO in the US and even without legal issues, poor market reception is reason enough to not use the name even if Mitsubishi had done the same thing Pontiac did and ripped the GTO name off to use in their home market. Also the 3000GT name wasn't limited to the US, it was the name for all markets outside of Japan.
I love the enthusiasm and information. Though JZ80 supra actually shares the same chassis as the 1991 JZS147 Aristo/GS300 it was actually released before the supra with the 2JZGTE. It was designed by Gugario at Bertone, and also the fastest production saloon in the world (for 5yrs) around Nurberg ring and Tsukuba. The later 161 had Vertex and very rare Tom's editions.

Obviously both cars were designed to accommodate the JZ series. But to say the JZS chassis is what the Supra is based on is flat out wrong because this info is public. And it is in fact based on the 2 door Soarer. The bulkheads and floor pan are 80% the same.

For America, a 3000gt is a Mitsubishi, but in Japan and Europe, it's the GTO. There would only be confusion in the states and if I had to guess it, the TRD 3000 gt would've been JDM only.
3000GT is in tribute to the Toyota 2000GT. It's also a very generic name. Literally just the displacement and GT. As for the Mitsubishi car, it was called the GTO in Japan but 3000GT in North America and Europe. There was no _other_ 3000GT in the Japanese home market.
Wonder why this has never appeared in grand turismo. Id love to rip this in gt7. They have the 400r and the one with the ge for gt500 is one of my fav gt3 cars

All these limiteds were quite expensive and customers had to order it and wait, seems like they weren't highly demanded...the same time 35 units was enough to advertise the parts they were selling. I reckon so.
Mitsu did it because it would be confusing like "we have two gto's in usa,mitsu and pontiac,so who is who again?" So in usa mitsu is 3000gt but in other its gto
That TRD has hadled every Toyota racing endeavour is not true at all, because GR or Gazoo Racing has handled their F1, WEC and WRC endeavours for the last 25 years...

I imagine a lot of people don't know that the JGTC Supra didn't use the 2JZ-GTE but a 2 liter turbo 4 cylinder engine, the 3S-GT.

Yes. However, the Mitsubishi 3000GT was only a name plate in the USA, due to the original name they used,”GTO,” was already copyrighted by Pontiac.

It doesn't share a chassis with the JZS. it shares a chassis with the Z30 Soarer. The 2j being in the aristo first is a given.
