  • My car key / fob went through a full washing machine wash and spin dry and stopped working. Here I show how I brought them back to life! Not always guaranteed but this has worked a couple of times for me on different cars. This time it was my Jaguar / Land rover keys for the F-Pace. All fully working again now. Please subscribe if you find it useful.

    My sister went into the pool with my fob. 😂😂😂 We were nearly stranded. Used the emergency key position to start the car. Next day i watched your video, which is today. Boom, the key works again. I just opened it and dried it up. Thanks for sharing, if i knew yesterday that I could open it up and dried it, i could have saved myself some drama because it looked like we stole car. The alarms in the car were screaming at times and we could not stop them because the key was not functioning.

      Nice when a bit of DIY saves a bit of money. Check the cars manual about turning off the alarm I think there is normally some key turns to enter a numbered code to turn it off.

    Thank you for this video! I realized mine was in the pocket of my jeans after the wash had begun agitating but before the spin cycle -- so there was a lot of water but not too much friction just yet. I knew I needed to remove the circuit board, but was afraid of damaging it in doing so -- but thanks to your video I knew how to remove it.
    I have been saving up those desiccant packets that come with stuff you buy (for this type of purpose, in case I ever needed to dry out electronics exposed to water). So I sandwiched the circuit board between two of those, and sandwiched the battery between two of them, and left it overnight to dry (and I dried off the rest of the unit with a paper towel). We live in the desert, so that helped a lot. I didn't wind up with any corrosion to the unit, so I didn't need to do any extra steps... and today the key fob works!! Thank you so much!

      rubbing alcohol has a lot of water, and potentially other things in it. I wouldn't even think of using anything below 90, and ideally you'd use as close to 99 as possible to even have a chance of alcohol helping.

    I haven’t even had my car a week and i washed my Subaru Ascent that was in my pants pocket. We were out to dinner when I stared thinking about it, when I got home I checked and sure enough it was in my pants pocket in the finished load of wash. I wear hearing aids and getting them wet can destroy them so I have a Hearing Aid dryer with UV light. I actually put my key fob in the dryer box. I took out the key, and ran my box on high three times. It worked! I saved my key!

    I need a close up so I can see what the chips looked like before. Now they look dark red/brown, and I don't know if I stuffed it up by testing it (no success) after having had it open and using the hair-dryer on it.
    I have now tried with WD40 as instructed here, and will put it back together when it looks dry again. Not long replaced it after losing the outer part of the fob (somehow the clip let go, and i was left with only the metal part of the key. 😩)

    I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee and my key looks nearly identical as this one and the same thing happened to me except I have a small electrical blower that is used for my gaming PC and other little electronic devices and I used it to blow out this key fob and yes it works but it works very weirdly now because sometimes I can be sitting in the car and the doors will engage on their own also sometimes when I get out the car and walk towards a grocery store I hit the lock button and nothing happens so I would have to at times walk up back up to the car and hit the lock button on the door handle and then when I go into the grocery store and come back out all of a sudden my doors are unlocked which is very dangerous my things can be stolen so maybe I'm thinking take the key apart like you did and then blow it out again

    Hi guys in addition to the other excellent tips given if your remote board still ceases to function after your drying process then grab the q-tips and methylated spirits with the remote board removed dab the q-tip into meths and then lightly dab and clean the board really giving a liberal soak to the
    1.Buttons parts and contact - also very important to push this button section in and out a few times to help to clean the inside of the button contact. This part is very important in the sequence as the buttons may have absorbed liquid inside the housing that needs to be cleaned out.
    2.All soldered parts of the board including chips.
    3.The battery contact surface and underside of board with meths.
    Using a liberal amount of meths will not affect the board and you can dry of with a hair dryer if needed after 10min or allow to air dry. Being alcohol based will dry out.
    After a thorough clean allow about 10 min dry time and then reinsert battery and with just the board and battery inserted test operations on car careful not to drop board on ground pop lock and unlock. If remote starts working again awesome good job reassemble remote ensuring the board is placed in correctly (not upside down) and bobs your uncle.
    If the board remote does not operate first instance do not panic i also had tried to dry the board out in the hot water cupboard for 4 days but ended up after advice to track the problem to the buttons on the remote board collecting residue inside and making improper contact.
    I had also previously tried to clean the board with meths but the process was not intense enough.
    Will not be a battery problem if you also replace with a new battery after dropping the remote in water mines is a 3v battery that gives out 2.6 volts when tested this is OK.
    Got my remote finally working after a few tests after dropping the remote in the toilet - yikes. The test now is will the remote still keep working as before the toilet episode.

    • @garyandrews746
      @garyandrews746 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So indeed there was a problem after the second clean so what happened was that i literally "soaked" through the remote board with meths by pouring on a part cap of the stuff then repeated the clean process. After this the remote seems to be operating. Water residue really gets into these parts.

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your story showing that you can can things working with patience and perseverance. Well done. Just a couple of minor comments from me. If the battery is 2.6v then best to replace it, it’s near end of life, should be nearer 3v. Meths is a good cleaner but it does contain water as well as alcohol. Water is the thing that causes the problem. Most evaporates but an using oil, at least as the final stage to dispel and repel water is probably wise, especially under the chips / integrated circuits which is difficult to get to.

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sounds about right. Should be enough to give it a good soaking to displace any water and try to spray it under any components like the integrated circuit chip.
