I've refused to pay bribes the vast majority of the time I've been in similar situations, and crazily enough it has usually worked. I've registered with the U.S. Embassy, so I'll call them to let them know where I am. And I'll also call my contact in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs so that he can make arrangements. As a Lebanese born and raised in Sierra Leone , a land I consider home , this is not what Sierra Leone is like generally . Beautiful welcoming people , you will get help without asking for it , if your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere you will see someone show up to help you . I understand your frustration about being scammed but I wish you would have made a more in-depth video about beautiful mama Salone . One day in that country will make you forget about the scammers . In my opinion this video does little in terms of making me think different about Sierra Leone and it’s people .. the most wonderful people on this earth . That’s the reason that most of African countries are so poor no development to much corruption so good to know this so I and a lot people will never go to those places sometimes we don’t understand why so many bad things happening to Africa and his people
These countries have such a huge inequality problem and not to mention centuries of being exploited, corruption is only the surface. It's tempting to blame corruption for everything, I get it but that is superficial and it's mostly just a symptom of other problems

yomma I think he is just sad because of his travel experience there. Sierra Leone doesn’t exactly suck but I guess you could get scammed anywhere And he is also quite worried in his scariest travel story videos
No Sierra Leone does not suck. Yes its true, Sierra Leone has its problems: poverty, inefficiency, corruption, exploitation of all its minerals by foreign multinationals etc etc, but it is by the far the most beautiful country i have been to in Africa and the people are amongst the most generous, beautiful, welcoming and resilient people i have ever met... These boys sadly had their trip ruined due to a bad brush with corrupt border officials, which to be fair is common all across Africa and i wouldnt judge Sierra Leone based on this video. The reality is this could have happened in any country in Africa and they did mention that they were expecting this! I would still highly recommend Sierra Leone to anyone. Rich in culture, extremely safe, stunning scenery, wonderful people, rich tragic history, Sweet Salone will definitely change your view on how you view the world and make you a better person. The country completely blew me away and I cant wait to go back!
This is pretty much the exact same as my experience when crossing from Senegal to Gambia in December. It was fine until they started ganging up and intimidating me. It was a good two hours of name calling, put downs and threats. Eventually as it was getting close to dark I paid 40Euro bribe... It wasn't the money I was angry about though but more the bullying techniques. Really put a downer on that trip and made me very wary as I moved further south.
Something very similar almost happened to me in February 2019, entering Tanzania from Kenya at the Sirari Border Crossing Station, near Isebania!!! The health officials in Tanzania sent us to a room with closed doors at that Station and wanted us to pay U$50 each for a vaccine document. I was very firm to explain I did not want to "buy" that document as I already had the yellow fever document I showed them... Luckily they allowed us enter Tanzania without paying the U$50 each... But It was quite distressing!!! Also, some years ago, while leaving Swaziland, at the Lavumisa Border Post, the Swaziland immigration officials threatened to arrest me and my friends because we didnt have a Swaziland visa, since the other Swaziland officials at the Jeppes Reef border let us enter Swaziland on the same day, without a visa, after we said we would leave Swaziland on the same day from the Lavumisa border. Of course the Lavumisa officials were already warned of our presence by the Jeppes Reef officials that let us in... It as a real scam!!! At the Lavumisa Border Post the Swaziland immigration officials were very agressive and told us we would go to prison if we didnt pay them U$35 each to get the "exit visa"... The three of us were very scared so we ended up paying... Very distressing!!! That happened when we were driving from the Kruger to Richards Bay in South Africa and, at least on the map, crossing Swaziland seemed a faster option... But the roads in Swaziland are horrible, so don't make the same mistake and avoid Swaziland by all costs!!!!
You exactly experienced what I went through traveling the border between Tanzania and Zambia, and also between Rwanda and DRC. But on the Rwandan side there is no problem.
When I was in Cameroon a police officer stopped our car, demanded the yellow fever vaccination card and once we handed it to him he claimed we had a huge problem because we were not vaccinated in Cameroon. I've refused to pay bribes the vast majority of the time I've been in similar situations, and crazily enough it has usually worked. I've looked right at people and said some variation of, "Cool, get the cell ready/ok, I'm headed back across the border. I've registered with the U.S. Embassy, so I'll call them to let them know where I am. And I'll also call my contact in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs so that he can make arrangements. Thanks for your help." That has seldom failed to work.

what a racist comment. it isn't a 'failed country' what a disgusting, racist thing to say. it functions perfectly well. just because you have one bad person doesn't make the country a failed one. maybe i could call greece a failed country since your economy went to sh? don't you have crime in greece? so has it failed? in the uk we have lots of crime. nobody will call us failed. think about the message you put out there.

ACC Breaking News‼‼‼‼
_ACC's Scorpion Squad arrests Health Staff at the Liberia Sierra Leone Border_
Following a widey circulated video from two American Tour Bloggers about Ministry of Health Staff attached to the border crossing with Liberia extorting $150 from them in a fake scam about Cholera Vaccine, the ACC's Scorpion Squad have this morning arrested and detained three identified staff, including the gentleman seen in the video processing the tourists, for further investigation.
The Scropion Squad were immediately invoked by the Commissioner after reviewing the video last night and they moved in and set an intelligence perimeter around the border crossing point from at night. They then moved in with precision to arrest the said staff as they came in this morning for work having confirmed their identities and locations. They are being transported to the Commission in Freetown by the ACC team stationed in Bo to answer for the shame and disrespect they have brought to the country and its people should the investigations confirm their alleged actions.
The ACC is currently taking steps to locate the tour bloggers so they can assist with the investigation and have the money taken from them refunded. We will be grateful if they, or any one who knows their whereabouts, can contact the ACC before they leave for Guinea.
The ACC assures the Public that it will leave no stone unturned to help launder the image of the country and to hold the corrupt responsible for their actions and crimes.

Something similar happened to me in Bulgaria as a tourist (an EU country). Corruption is everywhere, you just need to be lucky
Damn. I mean, these always happen sometimes.
Good luck in the future Drew Binsky.
If you watch his Instagram, you can see he had to bribe multiple times in their travels between cities. Not just border crossings.

Africa is a whole ass continent. Anyone who stereotypes a whole continent over the actions of a few people from a country is stupid.
