    I feel like the world was robbed of Stu Ungars brilliance as he was so good at cards and people were so afraid of him they wouldn't even play him in gin rummy. One year he amassed such a big chip in the main event that he didn't even compete in the last few days and blinded out 9th place. If he had lived another decade we could have seen his approach to the game with the hole card cams and some of the moves he was able to make against the best players in the biggest tournaments.

    they keep saying "is blah blah the best of all time. Its not the "whos the best player in the world" which is an impossible question to answer. Its a top 20 lists. To ask who is the most feared would be closer, then it could be an easy top 10 or even 5. To me Its Ivey, ungar is great but small sample in a weaker feild than today. Stu had uncanny abilities like Hellmuth or Ivey. Now if Stu was around these days its easily a solid yes or no. Not many scare players like ivey so if its fear its Ivey for me, but Stu is damn close too

    I think the net was cast too broadly here. The premise is basically “greatest athlete” but the games are wildly different. Holz is a great example. Tournaments are distance races, MTTs are middle distance races and cash is a series of sprints. Hold em is an entirely different game than basically everything else with only PLO being relatable.
    At the end of the day it’s probably Ivey, Ungar, and Reese (probably Brunson too) in one category and everyone else is kind of a specialist or decent. It looks like Siever might break through to the top tier.

  • @crowfeedreactions

    I think we have to be careful about recency bias when it comes to constructing "Greatest of All-Time" lists. While it's a huge disadvantage to us that we can't view hands of the past masters, what should count heavily in the "Greatest of All-Time" list placement is people who have done well, against the best competition, for an extended period of time. A guy who's very good for a few years and then drops out of the game is not going to get as much credit from me as a guy who maybe didn't match the peak of the first guy, but has been able to sustain his success for a longer period of time. That doesn't mean every leather-assed grinder can be considered, however; you still need to be near the best at least in order to really be considered.
    Let's see if some of these younger, more recently successful players, with not that many years in the game, can SUSTAIN their level of play over a decade or two. Then, MAYBE, they can enter the consideration for "Greatest of All-Time".

    • @jasonmaguire7552
      @jasonmaguire7552 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The older players had worse competition. There were far fewer poker pros back then, which means far fewer brilliant people becoming pros.

    • @crowfeedreactions
      @crowfeedreactions 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jasonmaguire7552 I don't think the players were worse back in the day. That's cope. There were fewer of them, sure, but there was also less poker being played in general, which means the total prize pool was much smaller and it was harder to make a living off it.
      Your general point has merit for those players who faded away as the game expanded, but Helmuth won then and he wins now. He deserves his flowers for spanning eras.

    Just an idea, but with reference to Stu Ungar I don't know if you know but there is a 'World series of Gin Rummy' in Vegas beginning of June - maybe you should enter and try and win?!
    Gin Rummy is not that complex a game - with your poker learning skills you could get a handle on it very quickly and have a great shot at the prize, and the competition itself seems quite small and not that competitive.
    Good for content?!
    Best

    While I don't like Helmuth on a personality level (man-baby, truly), you absolutely have to give credit for his ability to maintain a high level of play over time. People burnout on poker because of the variance and because it's simply extremely difficult to keep that same level of WILL to play and to remain competitive when you've already "made it" and are financially secure from your winnings. Helmuth probably *is* the leader, or at least among the leaders, of total WSOP events entered, but that he's also WON the most bracelets justifies his place on this list. There are many more bracelets available to win now and the fact he's STILL the leader is something to be respected.

    • @jasonmaguire7552
      @jasonmaguire7552 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, the old leaders will likely never be beat because the fields are too big these days. It's too hard to win a bracelet these days even if you're the best in the world, so it's not surprising his record stands.

    Of course a bunch of online guys are going to consider online the ultimate poker forum.. I disagree. Online takes out so many factors of the game. You don’t need a poker face, you don’t look for tells.. you can jump up and down when you have the nuts online and nobody knows. Online poker is just different. It’s like saying that because you can win an online car race against the best in the world in a NASCAR simulator, you’re the best race car driver in the world. Live poker results trump online results all day every day. And to act like the older players weren’t as good because they don’t use GTO.. remember, they were literally trying to think while they had a gun in their hand and legitimately prepared to be robbed at any minute. Playing in your underwear where no one can see you affords you luxuries they did not have.

      This is nonsense. Online poker is real poker and the volume of hands allows real skill to be judged. People run hot in a live tournament and dummies like you think it proves anything.

    Polk is definitely wrong about peak LeBron vs. peak Jordan. Peak LeBron was taking shoe clerks and bus drivers to the NBA finals at his peak, Jordan didn’t do it, and I don’t think he could have. Also, NBA rules favoring Jordan’s style of play were in effect during his peak, it’s a little unfair to put it this way, but in a sense he was playing on easy mode. It’s not like Jordan’s a chump, but the top 5 in NBA history is so close it’s an almost impossible argument.

      Lebron would get manhandled in the jordan era. Maybe the rules aren't explicitly in his favor, but the refs absolutely are.

    Will never trust a computer to deal cards right they can never figure out the algorithms so I don't look at that like I do live poker and skill play everybody knows how bad that computer can just brutally beat you when you're so far ahead of the hand and next thing you know it gives it the turn River and gives them everything online poker I've never seen so many hands hit flushes it flushes more than my toilet does

      Nope. This is nonsense. You wimpy play orders of magnitude more hands online so you get more bad beats overall. I trust a computer program more than I do manual shuffling.
