- Installing an easily removable and walkable copper ridge system on a residential home in Virginia.
There are many types of ridge styles for slate roofs and every style has been difficult for movement (walking without damaging) and making repairs. The most common style is made up of 10’ metal ridge sections that are nailed through 3 layers of slate on both sides of the ridge. This means that sometimes as many as 8-12 sixteen penny nails must be removed in order to fix a broken slate. It’s a big hassle, and possible to break a lot more slate than you were trying to fix by just removing the long ridge cap nails.
Although some people walk the ridges, it often dents the ridge cap and dislodges or breaks slate.
Here, I replaced the narrow ridge board with a slightly wider board (1.75” wide). The copper is made up of 2’ sections with hemmed edges and overlapped 3”. A brass flatbar (1/16” x 1”) is formed and a stainless steel lag bolt holds each end in place. The copper lays flat on the new ridge board and transfers weight without stressing the slate. It is easy to remove any 2’ ridge section simply by removing 2 bolts.
