In today's video, I'm doing a quick review of a forgotten Ricoh point and shoot camera and that camera is the Ricoh R1. The Ricoh R1 is the fully automatic cousin of the wildly popular Ricoh GR1. Whether you are looking for a Contax T2 alternative or you are just looking for a good point and shoot camera that will get you the look of film without having to worry so much about framing, composition, and camera settings, then the Ricoh R1 might be a fun little camera to consider. Depends on the subject I guess. Good if you have both. ( I have 5 film cameras and 9 digital )
@@RestorationAustralia definitely! It’s not my main or even my secondary camera. But I do like to take it to parties and just pass it around and let people take pictures
I have this camera. Two points:
1. Pretty sure night mode is a double exposure mode, focused on infinity and focused on the foreground with flash. You glossed over it a bit, but it is actually a really impressive feature as you can get a shot of people at night in focus, and the background is still properly in the image too, rather than just a washed out subject against blackness.
2. It also has a really neat feature in that if you press the rewind button whilst the camera is already rewinding it will leave the film leader out for you. This obviously makes it easier to do development at home, but the less obvious great part of that feature is that it makes it really easy to use a single roll of film in tandem with another camera that winds the "normal" direction.

Yeah it’s a pretty good camera! I don’t really understand all the hype around point and shoots recently though. Damn you Kylie Jenner, Frank Ocean and other celebrities that use the Contax T2😂 also yes my hair has grown up so fast❤️🥺
The LCD itself does not 'die'.
It's the glue that holds the ribbon cable in place.
Over the years, the ribbon will de-laminate from the glass LCD, but the good news is that you can obtain conductive 3M adhesive transfer tape, and fix the issue. It's tricky though!

I’ve had the GR version. The LCD blew out like the R1. But at the end of the day, these Ricohs are still my favorite. I like this LCD issue though because it keeps the price down relatively speaking.
I really want to try out the GR1 it seems like a fun camera to use
Good review. My 35Ti loads the same way, moves frames back into the canister as you shoot.
I would add lack of exp comp and manual ISO to the Bad. Cool camera though!
Thanks! Yeah I thought about adding the lack of exposure compensation and manual ISO to the bad list, but I think that's why they made this and the GR1 side by side. Different cameras for different markets.
Yeah, I figured. And if you had, someone woulda complained its feature set was just right for its intended market.

I also have a Nikon 35Ti and I have to tell you that you're wrong. Only at the end of the roll it will fully rewind it back in the canister.

Very rare that the LCD works so yours is in good condition. The framelines go when the LCD does

Excellent review, probably the best I’ve seen of the R1.
You are very fortunate ti have gotten it for a fin. Enjoy the LCD while it lasts, they will ultimately fail along with the framelines in the viewfinder. Hopefully by then you’ll have memorized the button touch sequence or paste a cheatsheet on the back. Do the frame mod, it is easy and nondestructive. BTW in 24mm mode another element swings into place and the lens is fixed at f8 which is not a bad thing as the 24 when it stops down has a very irregular shape which can effect bokeh when focused close. The 24 f8 aperture is perfectly round. Enjoy!

Wrong! In the wide panorama mode you are actually changing the focal length of the lens by shifting in a small additional lens. But ,to be honest, the quality is not very good.
y'all know about the Rollei Prego Micron, right? Same exact camera with a substantially worse name that you can get for substantially cheaper. Look it up!
