Silently Building my Sony Handheld Cinema Rig to Bossa Nova Tunes

Hi there! Me again. In today's video, I will be silently building my handheld Sony cinema rig. I have been using this rig for a few years now and it has served me very well! This is the perfect camera rig for people looking to get great handheld footage with vintage lenses in a lightweight and compact package. The rig isn't super complicated, but it's effective. Hi there. Me again! In today's video, Ethan and I travel to LA to shoot 8mm motion picture film for the first time. We used a 1940s Revere Model-88 camera that I got Ethan at a thrift store for $30. We shot a roll of Film Photography Project's Cine8 Color 40 film which to my knowledge is just respooled Kodak Vision3 50D. It's much pleasure trying out all formats and a wide range of camera types as well. Because everything analogue is'old', the prices remain moderate compared to current technology. I owned such an Olympus Pen F as shown here - 35mm half format 18/24 - got as a minimum 72 shots per 36exp roll and up to 147 exp per lford HP5/72 roll;-)) With an Olympus OM-adapter I used fine OM-Zuiko lenses with crop factor 1.4x, so with 50mm according to 70mm portrait perspective. I loved the square medium format 6x6 with Yashicamat124G, Rolleiflex SL66, Hasselblad 500 C/M, Kowa Six, and Norita (Graflex) 6x6 - the latter in design and function like an enlarged 35mm SLR camera. Handheld outdoors even the Pentax 6x7 is great, and a Makina 67 is as comfortable to use as a Leica and even just as quiet. Anyway, today I only alternate between 35mm Nikon SLRs and half-format digital Nikons - for me the most favourable way, because I can use the same Nikkor lenses on both systems and have owned them before 50 years and more; that's sustainable and economically satisfactory;-))) @philosimot

    VALOI Easy35 seem like really good product and interesting comments about negative sides which I haven't seen in other reviews. I don't see the point of comparing colors from camera scanning and an Epson flatbed. It's two very different devices and every step in the process influence the result, even (maybe specially) if you stick to defaults. You can also scan for NLP with the Epson scanner which would remove one of the differences of processing the negative conversion with different software. Comparing dynamic range and details is more interesting IMO, but scans from Epson need a lot more sharpening in post than an image from camera scanning.

    I've just received an Asahi Pentax SV camera (pre-Spotmatic, no internal light meter). Until a cold-shoe mounted digital light meter from China arrives, I'm guess-timating exposures on my first roll of Kodak 200. I set the shutter speed at 1/125 to over-expose 2/3 of a stop for insurance and am using Sunny 16 as a guide and writing down the aperture and shutter speed for each frame so I'll be able to see in what conditions and by how much I was off. Also, because I would never use f16, I've adjusted the formula from f16 @ 1/125 to f11 @ 1/250 and will compensate for less light by first decreasing shutter speed and when that becomes unfeasible then increasing the aperture since depth of field is important to me. I've watched a number of explanations of Sunny 16 on TH-cam and yours is the best I've seen. Using shadows to assess the brightness of a scene is valuable information. The eye is easily fooled, I think, in cloudy or overcast or shady conditions.

    I just stumbled upon your video, and I couldn't thank you enough for being so thorough with the review. That being said, I did want to ask since it's what I've found so far: The black bodies I have seen online are repainted. Would there be any diminishing value for them being repainted? How would one know if the repainted camera was originally black?

    • @ReimannPembroke
      @ReimannPembroke หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching! I don’t really think repainting them diminishes the value, they aren’t worth all that much anyways and there are a lot of them that have been made. In terms of telling if you have an original black painted one, there aren’t many ways that you can tell. The original ones will have a little white dot painted on the self timer lever (however, that’s easy to copy with the repaint) also I believe there is some way you can tell by how the strap logs are painted but I don’t remember. I’m sure there’s something out there about that though

    50 years ago when the Pen-F SLR half frame was introduced, it was one of a kind. It offered interchangeable lenses and presented a quality level not available in earlier Pen half frames. It was a huge success for Olympus, if quite pricey for body and lenses listed. I say listed, because once you got past the standard (kit) lens, and the less costly and exotic listed, many were unavailable, at least in the US. A couple f them were never made. Many were so expensive and poorly distributed that few were ever sold. They were practically unavailable once Pen-F production was discontinued. None of that is an issue if you just wanted a basic camera with a wide angle lens and a short telephoto zoom. Within a few years, all the major, full frame makers were offering TTL metering. The Pen-F lens mount was not designed to accommodate TTL metering (or any metering for that matter), and Oly was unwilling to redesign the mount to offer an aperture connection between body and lens, so they came up with a primitive, barely functional, manual matching number scheme which was slow and confusing in use, yielding the FT. The FT also made internal improvements. But, the meter made the FT finder unacceptably dim to focus. The FV was the last model, where Oly dropped the TTL meter from the FT to cut the price and milk out the last potential customer before killing the Pen-F once and for all. Ironically, this restored a useable finder and created the best and most useable Pen-F ever. It also made the "bargin" model the most expensive used Pen-F, if you can find it at all. If I had acquired an FV back in the early 1980s instead of a whole FT system, I probably would not have sold the whole kit off after its first major photo trip.
