      Leury Goncalves I know the track also by heart due to playing games while I never visited the track but Dale knows the track in detail. Every bump that unsetlles the car or every other track surface. There is so much info you can't get out of a game.

    Does the Porsche that was following you crash at 6:00 you see lights in the rear view mirror which look as if they are coming around the corner and then it changes direction and the Porsche is never seen again.

      dude, I wasn't going fast, 107mph up the hill and about 80mph at the crest before the right handers. the rear of my car came up from the ground and I hit the brakes to try to bring it down but it failed and I slid into the grass and hit the tires and spun it in just the right way for it to do a flip.

    You can’t beat experience. Fastest drivers aren’t always the ones hitting the highest speeds, just the smoothest and knowing the track and the limits, the car and its limits, the driver and it’s limits. Never driven the ring, my first lap I’d drive sensibly to learn the track

  • @MarkAtkin
    @MarkAtkin 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just watching this you can see why so many rear wheel drive cars crash here when it is wet. You have to be quick and accurate to catch it when the back end breaks away.

  • @pauldurose
    @pauldurose 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How do the "semi-slick" tyres that they provide on the rental cars cope with rain like that? Are they likely to be genuinely "semi-slick" or do they still clear enough water, and is it safe to back right off or do they need a bit of temp?

    • @BTGDale
      @BTGDale  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's safe to back right off. Semi-slicks only really suffer in truly torrential conditions (in my experience)

  • @johnypiston

    Amazing driver ...and all while chit-chatting too! Great video. I must also comment and say before I saw this video, I dismissed anything other than the 135i or 140i. I thought the others were weak. But this 125i is pretty impressive I must say. I see it is modified - is the engine tuned for more power? This surely must mean that the 130i might just about be the bargain of the lot. I think I will go and have a look. Thanks for the vid.

  • @thomasxbl
    @thomasxbl 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Dale, can you explain how that very same situation would have played out in the same car with racing rain tires? I was once told those tires generate as much grip in the rain as a performance summer tire (PSS, P-Zero, so not UHP) does on dry tarmac. Is this only true when it has been raining for some time? Also, how long does it have to rain at the Ring (or any track for that matter) before it is "only wet" rather than all of the gunk getting out of the tarmac?

    • @STARSHIPTROOP
      @STARSHIPTROOP 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      the problem with a track that big is....is will rain on 1/3 of the lap & the other 2/3rds is still dry, if you put on too soft of a rain tire, you'll shred those tires down in 3 laps or less if you can't keep the tires cool. If the whole track is wet, then all you have to do is balance your temps. Ayrton Senna was the master in the wet.

    • @thomasxbl
      @thomasxbl 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a problem, but for argument's sake, let's just say it is equally wet on the entire track.

    • @STARSHIPTROOP
      @STARSHIPTROOP 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      already said, like it the video,(full racing wet tire) stay off the dry racing line, slow steering & braking inputs, make sure the tires stay damp/minimally wet for max traction/tire life, finesse is the key

    • @thomasxbl
      @thomasxbl 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So will a racing tire (wet) generate as much grip in the wet as a performance street tire does in the dry? So you say to stay off the line, but what about if it has been raining for two hours straight -- is the racing line going to be fine again? Do you have experience driving on full wets on the Nordschleife?

    • @IIIErebusIII
      @IIIErebusIII 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It all depends on the car and Tyre, Racing wet tyres will out perform normal road tyres but on dry vs wet then who knows it's like comparing an F1 car to a street car two different end's of a spectrum, As for the racing line being fine don't see what you mean? If what you mean by grip then no it will have to rubber in again like racing on street track's or new surfaces the rubber and oil will need to be laid down again by car's going on the racing line.
