Farm Work In Between Storms/Spreading Manure/New Holland 489 Haybine Bearing Replacement

- The Midwest has been hammered with storms and torrential rain. On the dairy farm, we have been lucky enough to avoid any severe storms, but the rain has certainly caused some trouble nonetheless. All the rain tends to drain right by the barn and corral. Trying to keep the cows out of the mud and clean is a challenge. We are also milking more cows than our barn can hold, so we need somewhere to put the extra cows until we can get them milked. Alan cleaned out the red barn by the main barn for a holding area, but the rain flooded it immediately. Alan did a crop check to see how the oats and corn handled the heavy rain. Lastly, the New Holland 489 Haybine needed a bearing replaced, so Alan shared how he replaces them.

Here in Iowa, all I have to say is wow. We got a lot a rain. Homes just gone. Washed away.
But by God's grace, no one has been lost.
I have been watching the weather a lot this year. You and several other states seem to have been hit hard. I pray that it calms down now and you can recover.

Alan, thank you for showing your challenges (as well as your triumphs) in your videos. That's a bad wash (with the potential of becoming even worse...) and might well be best taken out of production. Explore soil retention strategies or comp land usage with your local ag rep. Me? If I had access to old bedding pack would probably just use that, cross my fingers, pray to God, and see what happens...
btw. We've followed your channel since the great drainage-line cleanout-replacement, so I realize that this is neither your first nor your last "roadeo." God bless (as always) your diligent efforts. There is no higher calling than to raise a family (in the fear of the Lord) than your path.

I feel terrible for those poor families! My washout is absolutely nothing compared to what others are dealing with.
Last year drought, this year rain, rain. It's like it saved it all up from last year and is giving it to us this year. I hope you're not getting sick or maybe it is just allergies to all of the mold and rain induced problems. Maybe next year we will have a better mix.
It is a good learning experience for the kids to see how repairs are made. Maybe one of your children will go into mechanics, a much needed trade.
A quick fix for your barn that keeps gettin flooded would be to dig a trench right down the middle of it and put in a perforated drainage pipe siting on a bed of gravel..Make sure the perforations are sitting in gravel so they dont get blocked.. Run the pipe right out the back wherever you want it to flow possibly into a sump ?Or if you can send it far enough away that your not too worried about it.. Then to catch really harsh storm water you could install a drain cap at the front of the barn where the pipe starts with a grate on it.. Shouldnt be more than a days work if you could borrow a digger and find some drainage pipe.. I had to do this at the side of my Irish cottage, storms would flood the path at the back of the cottage and the standing water was making the old limestone walls damp.. The water now runs off into a sump I dug about 4 foot deep and 4 foot wide with a good bed of gravel and clayish soil enough for it to hold the flood water and drain it away naturally over the course of a day or so..
Gierok farms might have some ideas for you with the hills they farm. With what to do with that washout.And I know the two of you are friends. the winter rye idea is a good one I think and then you could no till into it during the spring next year. That should keep the soil in place until it gets established

all you can do for that washout is fill it with rocks and make a river bed, you will be able to drive over it and not be trapped on one side, no shortage of rocks in the area, neighbors might have a pile or two for the cause, constantly filling it in while working the land only to have it wash down again sucks, at least it didn't wash into a river its only down field. thanks, keep filming.
Hey Allen,,were suffering the same thing here in Wisconsin. Were actually really close to you. Gierok Farms is a great resource. They're within 15 miles from us. But,that said, you know you're ground. Next 2 months are critical.

Hello thats a heck of a wash out a tile might be the best fix for that before you put dirt back. Your son asked what a burr is maybe the way to explain is part of the shaft that is damaged and the shaft is thicker so the bearing wont fit. Its wider than the shaft. Rain has been pretty nuts in all of MN this year, would have been nice to have a little if this last year 🙂.
Good video, I enjoyed having a few different days all brought together.
You know there was some serious water when it cuts through so deep you can see the different soil and rock layers.
You might want to try just putting in a couple little rock piles/dikes to slow water down in the future but then it would still let you till without having to have a massive waterway.
For the washout, check with NRCS. They can help with long term solutions. Short term, if you have junk hay bales, use them to make several dams.
Hi guys, we are getting rained out here in Ontario. According to the commercials on tv, all you need is a couple of bounty paper towels for your water problems. Keep plugging away and take care. 👍🇨🇦🚜❤️

Lay straw bales in there every 25 feet or so and grass it over.
I've seen it done many times.

I like your idea of the grass waterway. I suppose that is what I see in Iowa fields as we travel through there. They do a lot terracing of hillsides too. All interesting solutions.
First thing , in the big washout you need a bulldozer to fill in the canyon of a ditch made by the river of water an then you need to get some Terraces put in with some drainage tile to show down the water . I dont think grass water way alone will work . But you can try it an see, but in my Is experience that steep of a grade your going to just keep going in circles. Good luck to you Sir .

Put weeping tile pipe and smallrock then dirt but leave op in the beginning so water can go in the pipe like a drain as well
Perforated drain tile and maybe a pond right at the rock pile.
Hopefully you can come Up with a solution for the washouts I Would put a Gravel base down to help with the drainage then try the Grass runway Good Luck Blessings and Please Be Safe ✌️
My dad always tried to keep our hilliest fields in hay and corn on the flat.It's an idea,but its a 2 year procedure to fix that problem.
Build a concrete swale in front of the barn running to your pit, put a broom finish on it so it’s not to slippery for the cows. I know it would cost a bit but it’s an idea.

I have cut the bearing races with a grinder and dremel on one side. Then I drive a chisel in the crack and it splits and spreads the race.

The washout in the barn yard grass will not stand a chance you need small rocks formed a wash lined with stones do some grading to run the rain water off toward the silage bags area possably
That was a very big wash out. You may need to have some dirt hauled back in to refill that ditch.

On your wash out issues remember you have collected a variety of piles of rocks and that would work well in that area. There free???

I'v taken carriage bolts that wouldn't hold and find a wrench size and square off the head on a grinder to fit the wrench!
About a year ago I saw a video of folks building a barn floor from used tires with gravel inside. I dont remember the exact method. Maybe something like that could work for you. I thinking it was through an extension program.

We have a buyer for our Angus cross calves. We give them a few days to get off to a good start before he takes them. Our buyer has young kids, and this is his way of getting them involved in agriculture. We don't sell our dairy heifers, typically.

Sounds like you just need to build a barn for the heifers dry cows and excess cattle and some overhang machinery storage or hay

Sometimes what is convenient trumps what is considered overkill. When things get muddy we run out cows down the driveway and a little ways down the gravel town road to get to the pasture. They know their way now. Just wondering if you got a chance to try using loading using the 530 Case??
Yeah, we loaded some hay with it last night.
That tractor is beginning to smoke a bit of blue smoke the engine must be getting a bit worn.
It could probably use an overhaul, but it doesn't burn any oil.

Why don't you fill that washout back in? Like with your skid steer just so that ditch doesn't wash away more. That looks really deep
My uncle does some road work and had some good ideas on how to keep any new dirt I put in from just washing it all away again.
What do you call 'Switch' cows please? Are they colostrum cows? Different terminology for different countries 🤷
They are just extra cows, that we don't have stalls for, in the milking barn, so we switch them with other cows, once they get milked.
