I grew up hearing a little bit of konpa from my Haitian step father's side, zouk from my French mother's side, reggae and soca from being born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. I took some classes in different afro dance styles as I got older. African dance styles is so unique, the way it grounds you to the earth and connects your heart to something. It's powerful af. I'm not gonna lie, I always wished I was African to know what it truly and wholly feels like to dance African dance to African music with African blood and African soul. I cannot dance like I used to. I developed a disability that makes body movement painful and stiff, but whenever I watch the endless hours of afrobeats choreography on YT and IG, I can't help but roll my hips and chest around. 💗 I am so grateful that afrobeats is becoming more popular worldwide because it is such a groovy vibe. @@User__795 the commenter is probably an African American. He's able to use metaphor extensively to describe the history of black culture, especislly as regards pop music as the world have experienced or known it.
The genery the world now know as afrobeats music has roots in black culture dating back to pre-slavery era through the slave epoc when black people taken from West Africa to the cotton and sugarcane fields were able regenerate the African art in them and adapt it to their circumstances, creating hip-hop, sole and R&B in America. Black art and culture are often vibrant and irresistible thereby appealing to more people across racial or political divides.
Back to base, Fela , the afrobeat creator, was also inspired by African American art as performed by the popular funk star, James Brown. Such experience helped Fela to fuze funk and jazz beats, laid on the platform of varying African percussion instruments and horns, where he was able to produce tunes uniquely different from anything heard prior to his time, and afrobeat became popular, internationally. No one of this generation of artists in Nigeria, nay Africa' compares with legend, Fela and afribeat is not the same as afrobeats, genery-wise, but, it's obvious to the whole world that today's African singers are largely inspired by the meastro.

In university when I met my bestie, her family was from Ghana. She introduced me to African culture and afrobeats. I loved it since 2009. So many a Americans joked me for listening 😅 because it wasn't "in". Now so many of those same people listen to it now.

I don’t believe that any American would make fun of you for listening to non-current music lol. Especially in a university where underground and unpopular music is such a big deal. That’s not a thing that happens.

@@cspel002 oh okay, that makes more sense. I can see them joking around with you if they just didn’t like what you were listening to or weren’t into it. I would just be surprised if anyone made fun of you listening to Afrobeats due to a lack of popularity at the time because university music is notoriously unpopular lol.

I instantly fell in love with AfroBeats as soon as I heard. Not from TikTok but from the BBC Stations that I listen to on Weekends. Bein born and raised Afro American (Black)😊, with R&B, Hip Hop, Etc. I’ve always wonder what it would be like if I could connect to my African Roots and Ancestry and listen to music. Luckily I use my phone as a tool and discovered AfroBeats on my own through London Radio Stations. Although I was alittle late, I’m still glad I still have a chance to use my phone as a tool and listen to other parts of the world and what’s popular over there than just America

Look at the common denominator. Black music will always be groundbreaking. There's something in our culture that transverses generations and folks across the diaspora. When you really look into the history most genres derives from black music: rock, blues, country, r&b, hip hop, reggae, reggaeton, afrobeat.

Not new to Black folks. Thanks for the love tho. Finally, some well deserved recognition!
