Nagorno-Karabakh is a mountainous area in the Caucasus region between Europe and Asia. For more than 30 years, it's been locked in a conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The fight between the two countries began in the early 20th century but became a frozen conflict for 60 years while the whole region was under the control of the Soviet Union.
When the Soviet Union fell, newfound independence sparked a brutal six-year war in the region, where Armenia emerged victorious. From 1994 to 2020, Armenia controlled Nagorno-Karabakh, while Azerbaijan rebuilt its military. Fighting erupted again in summer 2020, and Azerbaijan went on the offensive - eventually capturing most of Nagorno-Karabakh and dramatically reshaping the region.

Oftentimes when the Soviet Union drew up borders for its territories, it would intentionally disregard the pre-existing ethnic boundaries within countries. This was done by Stalin as a sort of fail-safe to ensure that if the Soviet Union did fall, Russia's neighbors wouldn't be able to prosper. This can be seen not only in Nagorno-Karabakh, but also in Abkhazia and South Ossetia in modern-day Georgia, Transnistria in Moldova, and the numerous exclaves in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan.

You forgot to mention that Stalin's and Lenin's the biggest effort was to disolve Russia itself, that results now in Russian-Ukrainian war and will result in border conflicts with Belorussia and Kazahstan where the majority of russians lives. That was done according to the proverb "divide and rule" in order to simplisize the conrol. Decades of wars will pass untill boundries settle down. It's also ironic that Georgia-birthplace of Stalin is at Civil war because of him and other bolshevics.

@@sarfaraz.hosseini The government of the Soviet Republic of Azerbaijan was slowly strangling the life out of Armenians who lived in Karabakh (Artzakh) and Nakhichevan; meanwhile, Baku was sending in Turkic Populations (eg Meshketian Turks), who received the financial aide that was supposed to go to Armenians.
For a long time, Baku, Azerbaijan was committing the crime of ethnic cleansing, before the Karabakh War even started. That's why there aren't any Armenians in Nakhichevan now. And, it didn't help that violent pogroms ejected Armenians from places like Baku, Sumgait, and Kirovabad (Ganja).

there is subtle doctoring in the picture by VOX. just one detail: President Aliyev on 5:06 min says Karabakh - its Nagorno (mountainous part - russian langugae) and also its lowlands has belonged to Azerbaijan and is part of Azerbaijan. But the subtitles- the translation just says "Karabakh is Azerbaijan" as Aliyev saying. There is a big difference. Karabakh as a whole is a (geographic name) toponym developed not 100 or 200 years ago, But Karabakh as a region of Azerbaijan has been there for several hundred years. Nagorno is only mountainous part of it. So Mountainous Karabakh cannot be a historic land of Armenians as a toponym, which is why Armenians invented a new term Artsakh (instead Nagorno-Karabakh) unknown in any of the world maps of the last several hundred years. In order artificially to solve this problem, now, in recent one or two years, they they have come up with a new term - "lowland Artsakh" to denote the areas outside Nagorno Karabakh, which they had occupied 30 years ago. These 7 districts outside N.K. , purely Azerbaijani towns where 99 percent of the population were Azeris. Armenians then drove 700 thousand people from those towns. So until channels like VOX will not give the whole truth, it will be hard to make peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Nice analysis but you skipped some major players and details, was it a naïve mistake ?:
+ Israel who has been supporting Azerbaijan years before Turkey.
+ Iran who has been supporting Armenia fearing a growing nationalism sentiment at its northern Azeri population (20+ million) once the issue is solved and additionally by fear of Israeli posts by the borders
+ France who was officially neutral and has been supporting Armenia against Turkey. Basically it was another proxy war between the two after Libya and Syria. They were taken by surprise with the Russian deal and are still trying to sabotage it.
+ Russia who has been supporting Armenia since always with military presence then their mood swayed since Pashanyan came to power and got closer to the west. All in all, Russia emerged victorious from this conflict as it got both countries by the b*lls with that deal
+ Militias: Syrians supporting Azerbaijan & and other foreigners supporting Armenia (Russian, Kurds, Yazedis, Diaspora from various countries, ...)
+ Finally International geopolitics and effect of Azeri petrol on EU countries as AZ free them partially from full RU dependency and UK given that BP has great stakes in the Azeri oil industry

    An important moment that needs pointing out;
Azerbaijan NEVER, not in 1990s not today had a problem with ethnic Armenians living in Azerbaijan as Azerbaijani citizens. There are still around 100.000 Armenians living in Azerbaijan.
While Armenians NEVER wanted to be neighbors with Azerbaijanis in Karabakh, they ethnically cleansed the region from Azerbaijanis. And you will not find an ethnic Azerbaijani living in Armenia today (well, except for maybe as a POW in an Armenian prison).
Azerbaijan is a multicultural and tolerant country when Armenia is a mono-ethnic country that can’t stand to live side by side with others if it has a chance not to.

Yes,there were Armenians in this region, but they were not in majority. Armenian majority in Nagorno-Karabakh was on the basis of these agreements. Secondly Azerbaijan buys weapons with its own money and not only from Turkey bat also from Israel,Russia,Belarus and Ukraine. However Armenia receives weapons free of charge from the countries of the OSCE Minsk Group which must be neutral. Finally Azerbaijanis living in Karabakh did not participate in the “referendum” you said and nobody recognizes this “referendum”

Some strange explanation for the war.
    1. Armenians have always lived in Nagorno-Karabakh. But in 1995 Armenia occupied 7 regions of Azerbaijan as a buffer zone, in which Azerbaijanis and Russians have always lived. 1 million Azerbaijanis and half a million Russians were expelled from there.
    2. The UN Security Council has adopted resolutions 4 times demanding the liberation of Azerbaijani lands, and Russia, as a permanent member, also voted for this. Armenia itself did not recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh.
    3. In connection with the above, Russia supplied new military equipment to Armenia, provided that it did not appear in Nagorno-Karabakh. Russia, Azerbaijan and Turkey kept a watchful eye on this, so only old Soviet weapons remained in Nagorno-Karabakh.
    4. The Armenian army did not officially participate in this war because it had a collective security agreement with Russia. In case of participation of official Yerevan in the war, it would be the aggressor and all obligations of Russia were canceled.
