  • Hiplife Rewind explores the story of Ghana’s influential music genre through personal accounts of key artists and creatives in the scene.
Featuring pioneering icons such as Reggie Rockstone, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, and filmmaker Abraham Ohene-Djan, as well as rich historical archive of Highlife music and Ghanaian life, reporter Akwasi Sarpong leads us through the genre’s early musical and cultural influences.
With intimate access to international artists such as M.anifest, KiDi and Kuami Eugene, and Eno Barony, the film explores the trajectory of the music genre and the industry’s playful, ongoing rivalry with Nigeria over who discovered Afrobeats; was it rooted in Ghana?
Fused with music from the best of West Africa’s elite today, including multi-award winner Burna Boy, Hiplife Rewind is a visually striking inside story of Hiplife music.

Nigeria had Hilife in the During and after the colonial era. The likes of Sunny Okosun Sunny Ade, Lex Lawnsy, etc were Hilife Musician. Fela Anikpolakpo-Kuti was the originator of Afrobeat in the 1950s. It was was made up of original Yoruba sound and Jazz music, because he studied music in the UK and formed a group called Koola Lobito in 1958. as Wikipewdia put it " He called his style Afrobeat, a combination of Fuji music, funk, jazz, highlife, salsa, calypso, and traditional Yoruba music".
Where did Ghana musicians teach Nigerians about Afrobeat? This lie should stop!

@@KwamenaMJ Hilife is actually a relic of colonial music added to our traditional African music. It came from the use of guitar, trumpet and other instruments we learnt from them during colonial era fused with for example Yoruba music or Ghana tribal music. That is high life. Are you telling me Ghanianians invented Yoruba Fuji music or my Edo Kokoma music ? Bro, go and research it. Ghana had their own and we had our own too.
Fela went a little notch to add Jazz to his own because he schooled abroad .

That’s great! As a British Ghanaian, I’m so happy they are documenting about Ghanaian Afrobeats music. Although, there are some Ghanaian songs have become popular, but I think there’s not enough representation of our music and not much knowledge on it either. So if hip life really gave birth to afrobeat why are fighting Nigeria over our child
Let’s focus on it and promote our own that is where we belongs to hip life for all 🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭

There's nothing like HipLife, it's just a straightforward appropriation of the American Rap and Hipop styles.

Hip life/Rap in GH without mentioning Okumf) Kwaadee, Obrafour, Okyeame Kwame, Kwaw Kese, Sarkodie and among others, this is an incomplete work.

The problem with us Ghanaians, is that, we don't know how to nurture a good thing. The moment we see someone doing something else and it's trending, we abandon our own and switch to theirs. The rise of Afro-Pop is a clear example. When Nigerians took it up and the likes of P Square, TuFace etc started creating a buzz with it, we stopped doing Hiplife and stated doing Afro-Pop. You even saw Hiplife Artists doing Afro-Pop, simply because they wanted to stay relevant. And I don't blame them. Times change and we need to adapt or be left behind.
My problem is how we abandon our own farm when we see someone doing something else and succeeding, instead of improving and promoting what we already have, just to go and beg for crops from their farm.
Artists like Kidi and Kwame Eugene shouldn't even say they are influenced by Hiplife music. These guys are just a by-product of Afro-Pop not Hiplife.
Every couple of years, a true Hiplife protege springs up and then it's crushed for lack of support. Last year it was Asaka...these Kumerican boys brought life back to Hiplife but what did the media and the populace do about it? 🤷🏾‍♂️

I like that he made the point to state that High-life did not originate in Ghana. Ghanaians added more African rhythms into it. Nigerians, Congolese, Liberians etc.. have their own indigenous High-life music. When Afro Caribbean and Afro West Indian rhythm merged with Continental Africa. New forms of music emerged.

Nobody can write a history in ghana without Denkyira kingdom, so nobody can also write a hip-life music without Ambuley and Grand-Papa Rockstone. Even listing to the vocabulary of the ghanaian artists during their verious interviews but have realized that's not what the world is waiting to hear. Congratulations guys, GoGh.

Will BBC or any other station narrate the evolution of modern Ghana music and parallel that similar to evolution of modern Nigeria music. That will be a very interesting narrative and quite revealing...my $0.02
