- The African influence is growing in hip hop with the explosion of Afrobeats music. As hip hop culture becomes more international, it's opening up new doors around the world.
The video for French Montana and Swae Lee's 2017 hit "Unforgettable" was filmed in Uganda and has been viewed more than 1 billion times on TH-cam. Its success paved the way for many others, like Casanova and Davido's hit "2AM" and Nigerian artist Burna Boy, who has enjoyed Billboard Top 10 chart success with his unique sound.
Hot 97's DJ Wallah, who took a chance and broke Afro B's "Joanna," says the appeal of the Afrobeats sound is universal. He says he sees a lot of the hip hop artists collaborating with African artists now. He says that is pushing the culture forward and broadening the horizons of hip hop.
Dr. Chris Emdin, a Professor at Columbia University Teachers College, says the hip hop-African connection is real and deep.
And Tuma Basa, TH-cam's director of urban music, says the growing number of collaborations between hip hop artists and African artists is a way for artists to expand their audience without alienating their core fans.

I don't understand why anyone is questioning the connection between these different kinds of music of African people. We are all the same people at the end of the day whether we are on the continent or in the diaspora. It's true that we have differences because of our removal from the continent, but inside of us all we still have the spirit of Africa inside of us and it is evident when it manifests in our music. It doesn't matter if we are looking at the spirituals, highlife, jazz, reggae, blues, soca, hip hop, r&b, afrobeat, gospel, samba, salsa or whatever, we can hear Africa in all of that.
Bless you brother. I pray when the boarders open up you find an African friend to travel over to the continent with. Either that or you go yourself. We're always looking to extend our open arms to our family overseas, don't be a stranger.

The TRUTH is Afrobeat and Hip Hop was heavily influenced by DISCO FUNK SOUL. Syncopated rhythms and grooves was not exclusive to Africa. Many cultures around the World have rhythmic based music that employ syncopation and grooves. We can only say that the African diaspora has had a tremendous influence on the development of music in general.

Afro beat artistes are making money. They are also fans of US music. They marinate Afro beat with us hip hop. African immigrants are every where. Nigeria, don't need us crowd for validation. Nigerians were always ostracized, people are now looking to them because of their music, this gives worth and value.
Don't get it wrong. Afrobeat is Fela's own hard work. He fussed Nigerian traditional musics, jazz and also only added Ghana's highlife music as part of what he fussed together to form afrobeat while he was experimenting. How dare Ghana now try to claim his sweat. Americans and Nigerian traditional musicians (that he also borrowed from their genre or added their genre to form afrobeat) are not trying to claim his work or sweat. So why is Ghana always trying to steal people's work (Fela's work). Your Ghana highlife was only fussed with other genres to form something totally different and new, and is still there with you. Nobody is dragging it with you. Why don't you make it (your Ghana highlife) big or experiment with it, just as Fela did with Nigerian traditional musics to discover something new, and make it go world wide so that the world can celebrate you too and stop trying to claim other people's work. This goes out to all Ghanaians to always leave Nigeria alone and stop competing. There is definitely a connection between African Americans and West Africans. They have the same kindred spirit. For example Cardi B's brash upfront aggressive personality is very common among women across coastal tribes in West Africa.

There’s a difference between AFROBEAT and AFROBEATS.
Afrobeat was invented (more like cobbled together) by Fela Kuti. Afrobeats (with the “s”), on the other hand, is a catch-all tag for all Afro-centric music - Afropop, Afro-reggae, Afro-rap, etc, etc.
Fela's Afrobeat actually came from a mixture of different sources. He took his inspiration first from Jazz music, then Yoruba folks songs found in local tales, usually in call and response rhythms. Don't forget that Fela schooled in England and at first he was playing European Jazz music until his mother advised him. He then mixed it with African Yoruba percussions using Nigerian Pidgin English and the Yoruba language. The Afrobeats we found today is derived from the work of Fela. He was the first to play music in Pidgin English, mixing it with Yoruba and more artistes have introduced Igbo language into the mix.
Even modern afrobeats is a combination of different genres but don't get it twisted its driven by the African vibes.

Afrobeat stemmed from Highlife, which began in Ghana in the early 1920s. Afrobeats originated mainly from Ghana in my view however the Nigerians took it to another level first all over the continent with the likes of PSquare and then onto the global stage with the likes of Dbanj then Wizkid Davido and BurnaBoy there is still a great synergy between Ghana and Nigeria
