A new documentary ‘This is Amapiano' tells the story of the genre to date, including the crucial role that viral dance challenges on Tik Tok have played in its global spread. #Amapiano generated over one billion views (1,6bn) on Tik Tok in 2021, with global streams on Spotify’s AmaPiano spotlight playlist increasing by 116%.
Kutloano Nhlapo AKA DJ Da Kruk is a South African DJ, Producer & Presenter who has been pushing Amapiano on his radio show since the early days and spoke to the most important DJs, artists and producers in the scene.

As a Nigerian living in China, AMAPIANO is taking over the clubs even the Chinese ones, as long as there is a foreign DJ and Africans in the building that night is gonna be lit for everyone. waking up in the morning and i cannot start my day without PIANO. This documentary feels incomplete without Kabza De Small, Vigro Deep and Madumane. Oh and this is my opinion and it doesn't have to be the same as yours....deal with it.

For my perspective, it is amazing to see Amapiano started. In the 90s, Kwaito was big in SA. It then moved Afro House (in the 2000s), which was even bigger (hence the OG DJs like Oskido, Vini Davinci, DJ Fresh, the new generation - Black Coffee, Sun El Musician, etc.)
Then, amapiano mixed the two genres, with Jazz. The outcome is what we have today.

I am Zimbabwean and my first record was by Yvonne Chaka Chaka. We have been listening to South African since aeons ago. I agree, at the moment Amapiano is South Africa's biggest import but it's not the first original sound. They have been producing original sounds from looong ago! Like Oskido speaks of Kwaito... there was Papa Hugh, Stimela, Ladysmith Black Mambazo... and so many I am probably forgetting. The beauty now is: South Africa is being truly seen!🔥🔥🔥

It's quite unfortunate that anyone would say Amapiano is the first original sound out of South Africa. I am Nigerian, growing in the 90s, the album record of FESTAC 77 (Black & African Festival of Arts and culture) was a staple in most homes. Nigeria was host country of its 2nd edition in 1977 and it was a hugely successful festival.

As a Nigerian, the first time I heard Amapiano, I was amazed, then Jealous, then happy and proud of these great people, who cooked up this effervescent beat that transports you to realms never before seen.

I was born in Chicago in the 70s and saw the rise of House and HipHop. Amapiano reminds me so much of deep house with the South African influence. The dances are so dope on top of the music. The languages are also so beautiful.

I think this documentary is missing Kabza de Small, DJ Maphorisa, MFR Souls, Gaba Cannal, and MDU a.k.a TRP, as they’re true originators of the style. Recently, I also became a fan of gqom: it’s a bit like amapiano but even more energetic and, actually, influenced amapiano in the beginning.

In 2005 I went to South Africa and I was there for almost 3 months. I was hearing similar and house music was so fun and so different there. It kept you on the dance floor all night until the women began screaming Aibow! I think South Africa should gate keep its music it really should. It’s a magical place!

Wow I finally know the name of the sound! I first heard it on tiktok last year with a dance trend it was infectious had a Cali /Miami bass/ African rhythm to it. I was addicted! Then I head other songs that didn’t have that US influence and I loved it even more. The more they drop songs the more their creativity is exposed and I can’t wait to see just how far they push it.
