Two Recommendations if you haven't already:
#1- swap to a 180° (TD5) thermostat to lower coolant temp by 10° and enhance the longevity of the head gasket and further prevent overheating.
#2 - check that you have zerk fittings on the front prop shaft U-Joints. Land Rover did not supply serviceable UJs - and is the cause for the EXPLOSIVE failures that can take out the transmission and cat convertors. If you haven't converted you're just asking for that grenade to go off. The pin is pulled! Just swap out the UJs to ones that have the fittings (or purchase a fully reconned prop from Great Basins Rovers) The Double Carden joint on that front shaft conceals a pin grease fitting that if you don't look for it you'll never see and never service. The pin grease gun fitting is about $10 from NAPA. Grease 'em all every 5K.

I bought one for $1400.00 I was gonna get a Jeep when it died. But it hasn't died, took it from Kings canyon to Mike's sky ranch and back with all the lights on the dash on. It made it there and back no problem. I got it at 165,000miles. It's at 210,000 now. It just won't die. Love it.

Where do Discos tend to leak, is it past the transfer-case driveshaft oil seal?
If so I would imagine some aftermarket oil seal mfg wouldve built a retrofit kit, I mean 3 aftermarket companies have kits for the Porsche 996 IMS motor bearing, and that involves not just an aftermarket bearing cap to hold a lubricated plain bearing, but also new oil lubrication lines and tap fittings installed.
I guess it would be a straightforward aftermarket solution if the transfter-case seals and bearings are secured by a cap-ring, if they're installed from the inside of the transfer-case with a cap on the inside, aftermarket would require re-machining the transfer-case and that would turn expensive in a hurry.

The BIG secret to Land Rover ownership, is to always have at least 2 or 3 minor things broken. If you try to get it perfect, something else will snap, leak, fall off or catch fire in protest. Least, that has been my experience over the past 25 years of ownership! 😂😂😂

Bought a Disco 2 with over 250k on the clock last year. Everyone said we were nuts. Had to do the brakes (rotors and pads all around, calipers in the rear, steel braid lines installed), replaced the ABS modulator, and had to do the power steering pump... and that's it. Dead reliable, starts every time you turn the key, and will go absolutely anywhere we want it to. Paid less than a thousand bucks for it, and it even looks fantastic after I gave it a full detail. People ask us every day if it's for sale.
I'm sure it'll need a few things going forward, and I plan to replace the front and rear bumpers with steel. But for the money we paid, this was one of the best investments ever. Absolutely love the truck. Haters gonna hate.

$1500 on rear brakes😖 in the UK that would be less than $100 , your prices for Landys are mad $1500 would buy you another decent disco in the UK lol
Having had many myself I have to say landys aren't "unreliable", yes they let fluid in and out in the direction they shouldn't, yes things come loose, yes rust RUST is the normal killer 😢but they are rarely not moving under their own steam, they soldier on. In the UK there are more left on the road in relation to numbers produced than any other car which says a lot.
I love my disco too but prefer the MK1 300tdis (rover v8s can be sketchy)
They will never be a mad rock bouncer like a jk on big old Danas but that's not what they are about, slow as possible fast as necessary and they will get you there.

Tommy, great video, and one thing I can say is that old Landies actually like being used - they hate being an occasional shopping trolley - Things you can do - if you ever hear a little chirping sound when you start to move off, or if you feel a metallic clunk when going from reverse to drive, then the front prop UJ's are starting to fail and you MUST replace them ASAP! When they fail the flailing propshaft destroys the gearbox. Other things you can do - fit a Freelander thermostat - this is rated a few degrees cooler than standard D2 spec - so will help prolong the life of that engine. Replace the MAF sensor with a genuine one, check the fault codes and ensure all O2 sensors are working. Will help a bit with fuel consumption. Also do oil change to gearbox (they are NOT sealed for life!) diffs and transfer case. If you don't have lockers then also use some friction reducer in the axles and the engine to help give smoother running and fuel consumption.

Most of the horror stories we hear of sky high repairs and expenses is from idiots who never maintained their Land Rover, and it gave them back what it got. I personally have owned a 2006 Discovery 3 - 2.7 TDV6, and in 13 years, only 2 things have gone wrong: EGR Valve, and a cracked intake hose (£400 total in repairs). So I’ve owned 4 D2’s (02, 03, 03, 04)and have 1 with the engine out right now and one with the engine completely disassembled. If you want to know exactly how to do the head gasket job Atlantic British has a great step by step video and these engines are relatively simple, almost like putting legos together. Where I’m from in Georgia, you can find rough examples of these for under/around 1000 about 2 or 3 times a month. The 4.0 is supposedly less likely to slip liners as the 4.6 but the drop in power of the average 4.0 is undesirable to me. You can take a 4.0 block and put 4.6 internals in it for a “more reliable” but more powerful engine but that would be a completely rebuild and thousands of specialized work. TopHat liners are about the best thing for these engines and once installed increase the value of the vehicle. For your case I don’t really think a parts truck is necessary and since you don’t really work on your truck anyways it doesn’t really seem the most viable.

I have a 2000 and so far it has kept up with the Defenders in my club. I believe I am only the second owner and that it has been well maintained. Doesn't even leak oil.

Nope sorry. You just got lucky. I had that exact same vehicle for a year. It left me stranded without warning about 8 different times in 1 year. I never trusted it. Now I will never own a Land Rover again. Worse vehicle I have ever owned. However it was absolutely fantastic off-road and surprised me everytime I did take it off-road and it stayed running. Extremely capable machine. I’d just tear the engine out and the entire electrical system and it’s be a fantastic setup. Now I sold it to a lady in town that liked the “Jurassic park” look and she’s had it for over 2 years now. I asked them if they had any problems with it and they said not one.

Just wait until you drive an 18-wheeler with a Detroit 8-71 engine. Pull into the Truck Stop and say “Check the fuel and fill up the oil.”

Had a 98 disco... 60,000 miles leaked oil, speed sensors went out, window switches broken, key fob/4x4 sometimes worked, 16 mpg no matter what. Sold it 2000 under bluebook just to get rid of it.

For head gasket problems in the Disco try TITAN polymer based sealant. I bought my '04 Discovery 3 years ago for $1200. Beautiful truck but leaking head gasket. Previous owner thought repairs would be prohibitive. I did some sleuthing and found this product online. No probs with it since and said to last 5 years! It's pricy ($139) but it works! (NOT A PAID AD)

I am in love with my '02 series II. Been doing some light resto work and have saved boatloads by doing so. Recommend Atlantic Rover Supply for parts and how-tos. Your recovery vehicle is where I hope to be with it.

I work with an NGO in rural Romania. The Ngo buys old Discovery's from England and then ship them to Romania. They buy old Discoverys because they get them cheap and they are reliable, yes reliable. Everytime i ride in one while im Romania i am always impressed with the combination of rugged durabilty while off road and incredible regular road manners. Not surprised at all the TFL is doing as well as it is..cheers

I own a 4.0l 2000 DISCO 2 and I live in Costa Rica, it cost me around $300 to make the windshield replace...
BTW is not the OEM windshield but who needs that anyway...

Have a 2003 disco 2 same shape, same lights but a diesel.Everyone has laughed at me when I purchased it.We all went 4wdriving on a beach, 2014 Jeep Wrangler overheated and got bogged in sand, 2018 ford wildtrac got bogged and blew a gearbox, so I pulled him out in the most unrealiable 4wd ever. I love this rig, though it's standard, she does rough and gnarled tracks easily......

I've always had a soft spot for Discos, especially Disco II's. They're like the poor man's G Wagon. That thing does a pretty damn impressive job off road for what is essentially a worn out, stock vehicle... even with that lame engine.

I bought a 2000 model Discovery (TD5, Manual transmission) from Sydney Australia, and I bought it... sight unseen... from Brisbane (about 500 miles from where I live). The day I picked it up I drove it back to Brisbane. The total number of issues I have had with my Amelia (named after Amelia Earhart)... the clutch, for over two years and a window that a 7' kangaroo smashed when I hit that on a 3000 mile rural road trip in Australia (drove through every state and territory in Australia) with a three day luxurious retreat at the Uluru resort for Christmas 2018. I have ABSOLUTELY loved this truck, in the last week I have had to replace the crank pulley and seal, and now third gear is a little sketchy, but for a truck that has 280,000 miles (over 400,000 Kilometres) I am absolutely astonished at how reliable Amelia has been, the places she has taken me (not to mention the other 4x4's she has pulled out of some seriously sticky situations). I am so happy with my purchase and I could not begin to think of buying another vehicle for several years to come. And I do all of the work on her.
I love my Landy, next stop 2020 Landy Defender

Great short quality video. You do a good presentation. Glad to see you enjoying a beautiful rig! My favorite looking off road SUV. I have a 95' Grand Cherokee I bought for $1700 (high mileage but in great shape mechanically and overall). Can't believe what it travels through stock. Solid axles are fantastic. As you know it's SO fun to off road an inexpensive rig not being concerned of longevity or damage. Keep up the good work with the vids Tommy!!!
