Live in Denver - 3 Defender 90s, 1 Defender 110, 3 Range Rovers, 1 LR3 (still have the 110 and LR3) in 24 years. No major issues. LR3 is my daily driver. 160,000 miles. Zero issues except I tried to buy an aftermarket gas cap. Nope, gotta go oem. Still on the original suspension. Need to pickup Sheetrock? No problem. Need seating for 7? Easy. Want to go 4 wheeling with your Jeep friends. Sure. V8 HSE LR3 is the best vehicle LR has ever made. And I’ve owned enough LR’s to give that opinion. I’ve also owned Toyota Tacomas and 2 Land Cruisers. Nice trucks. But boring on the inside. And, contrary to popular belief. They break down and they are expensive to fix…. All good. Doesn’t matter what you drive…as long as you like it.
The TDV8 in the L322 and L405 are solid as well.

I’m about to purchase an one owner 2012 RR 5.0 supercharged with 30,000 miles on it. Everyone tells me I’m a fool to buy it and that I’ll go broke repairing it. For $25K I can’t see that I can go wrong 🤷♂️ we’re your 3 Range Rovers reliable units?
Kase, don't let anyone get you down. You have a dream and you are making it happen with your own 2 hands. There is so much satisfaction in that. It is also a challenge that most people won't undertake, so be proud of your accomplishments. Just remember that no matter how good AI gets and whatever that means for video production, it cannot do this!

Data Point: 2012 LR4, bought new. Ride comfort, storage, offroad and camping over 125,000 miles without any major issues. Best car I’ve ever owned - just can’t let it go.

Then don't. Really,i know.The models after the D4/LR4 are horrible pieces of crap. I work on them. These cars were the last real versatile Land Rovers.

I bought a 2007 LR3 HSE about a year ago and it also has been great. Had 132k miles when bought and is in great condition inside and out. Done some deferred maintenance the PO should have like wheel bearings and lower control arms. Changed all the same fluids Tommy did (but did it myself for much cheaper). They're surprisingly simple to work on. Loving it so far after a year of ownership.
I think mechanics are all so crooked people just don't even try, its why I do all my own work, I can't even get some tires put on at a shop without being given ancient tires for crazy money, it's a horror show out there
We’ve had ours since new. 2005 LR3 and we still drive it. It’s my favorite vehicle to take off road .
Tommy, if you really like the rock rails, take them to a local power coat company. They will blast them and powder coat for a few hundred dollars. You will have to remove them but then you will have a good opportunity to paint some bed liner/ stone chip under the sides.
Or he can paint them himself with Raptor liner. Then when it gets scratches he can touch it up.
I would say the less options in those the better! No need to worry about the heated seats going out or a leaking sunroof. Only thing that needs to work is the off-road goodies! You've got great luck Tommy! Nice rig!
LR3 is an excellent all around vehicle. DIY maintenance is a must to keep costs down (as well as finding good parts suppliers). Just tackle one job at a time and have a backup vehicle so you're not rushed. I hope you drove UT128 as part of your Moab trip. Just did that and the Colorado National Monument as part of our 5k mile road trip in our X7. Love the update and keep up the great work!
Great video! I definitely agree that regular servicing is key to happy long-term Land Rover ownership. I’ve got two of them, one of which I bought over 25 years ago. Looking forward to an update on the Discovery 2 build.
I do own an 08 LR3 HSE which has zero issues 270k miles and, up until 2 months ago, all original air suspension - had to replace the two front air bags due to cracks.
When maintained properly LR/Disco 3 will last and it really is a very good driving vehicle on and off road.
I am very excited About that LS swap, on that Disco 2, it will make it very nice to drive up the Colorado mountains!
I wish the the LR3 came with that 6 liter LS instead of the AJ41!
I’d argue that they don’t necessarily need even regular maintenance. I have one that was clearly neglected. It’s still kicking with very little complaining. Coming up on 200K. If I get 250 out of it I’ll be absolutely over the moon.
The biggest Land Rover haters are almost always people that have never owned one! I love my ‘09 LR3, by far the best vehicle/money ratio out there. Even with some repairs, you get a very capable and comfortable vehicle for little money. I will say though, if you plan on buying one, make sure you are willing and able to work on it yourself. What could be a repair in the hundreds of dollars will instead be in the thousands.
Oh and one more thing, if you think a Land Cruiser isn’t maintenance intensive, you’re wrong on that one. They love their maintenance and will bite you if not taken care of properly. I’m not talking about oil changes either, I’m talking about things like replacing the entire radiator when doing a timing belt change on the 100 series for example.
My LR3 has 245K miles and is on it's original air suspension and compressor.
People get scared of air suspension but heres my almost 10 year experience with it: original air compressor lasted 19 years (with new dryer cap), 1 x height sensor, front valve block needed new o-rings and 1 x air strut leaked. I fixed it all myself except strut all was super easy to fix. Not bad for 19 years… LRs are so deeply loved there is tutorials everywhere for everything.

Kase, I promise you that Land Cruisers still need plenty of maintenance. My Dad's 100 series has actually really nickeled and dimed him over the past year with all the maintenance it has needed.
My experience as well, everything is expensive, I’ve had my ‘98 with 166K miles and after owning for 6 years, and 50,000 miles, my average cost is about $2500 per year. Has never left me stranded though.
@@balauderman And most auto parts stores don't just have Land Cruiser parts sitting on the shelf, it almost always takes 3-7 days for the parts to come in from a warehouse. Meanwhile, if I need a part for my ZJ Grand Cherokee or my GMT400 Chevy, I can walk into any small town NAPA auto parts and its almost guaranteed they will have the part I need in stock.
@@ThePioneerSpiritum, there are Land Cruiser parts anywhere you go. They’re absolutely everywhere. I have an FZJ80, and I just restored it in total, and didn’t have a single issue with parts. But I live in California. Maybe that’s why?
@@Queensizemusic My Dad and I live in a mid-sized city in the intermountain west. Even with the 100 series sharing a lot of parts with Tundra's & Sequoia's, more often than not he has had to wait for parts to arrive. But I have never had to wait for parts for my two domestic vehicles.
@@ThePioneerSpirit I travel across North America - Mexico, U.S, and Canada a great deal, and I can find parts for my 80 Series everywhere. And, when I’ve been traveling overseas, I’ve never had a problem finding parts for any Land Cruiser. They’re a world car. Parts are everywhere.
Almost done with my 5.3 swap, done on about a third of the budget of this one haha. All the little things add up! Maybe when the ZF dies I’ll look at the 6 speed and a power adder. Can’t wait to get it back on the road!
Best part is I’m still under the cost of a land cruiser or 4Runner all in.
I'm a Brit in Denver. After a couple of years of looking, found an '06 LR3 SE 74,000 miles, 2 previous owners (SoCal and CO, so rust free), extensive service history. $8,000. Clearly spec'd for SoCal - no heated seats but has a sunroof and the "upgraded" stereo. Original air suspension. Love. This. Truck. Ask me again after a CO winter....it will spend a lot of time in the mountains. My last LR was a '95 D1, 70,000 trouble free miles. I might be suffering from a false sense of security. We'll see......

Tommy- you are my hero! I have had mine since 2018 and love it- gotta keep up with preventative maintenance. Definitely "do all" but not the best at any particular one thing- I have driven 400 miles with my wife and a full sized fridge in the back with rear gates closed, the lay-flat second row seats are one of the best features. I wish the New Defender & Grenadier could do that. So much more space.
Cool video! If you are a true car enthusiast you buy a car with your heart, not only your wallet. A car should make you feel something. It's not an appliance, like a washing machine. Not to a true car enthusiast. Love the Kace and Tommy videos, best pairing in all of car TH-cam.
Love your straightforward and honest appraisal. My experience using Landrovers personally and professionally is to stay completely on top of all the maintenance and be prepared to treat items like suspension arms and prop shaft bearings as maintenance, then no major issues over 150k miles. No problems with air suspension except on LR2. LR4 / Range Rover no issues with off road use. Nothing else comes close to all round usability / practicality as the LR3 and 4 IMHO.
Live in Denver also, Down to 1 2022 Defender 110 P400 SE no air suspension or rear locker, w/ roof rack, air pump, previously back in the bay area: All hand built: 1995 Discovery brand new after company purchased by Cisco, built it up, lifted fully locked with full body armor, ARB and Safari Gard, sliders/bumper, winch ( front and hitch mounted rear one used a lot ), car top tent, called the Light Brigade, broke lots of half shafts and CV joints, repaired in the field, until upgraded properly with Cromoly parts. Had one Defender 90 on 37's and beadlocks and 35's, fully locked, 4.75's RP, Ashcroft Under Drive, Chromolly CV's and Shafts, dual Cardon CV driveshaft, Welder, Rimmers Brothers Super charger called the Killer Bee, guess what color it was?. 1972 FC 101 fully restored, fully locked with with 37's rare, powered Sankkey trailer, front and rear PTO driven winches. Friends snuck in from Canada at the time. ...shh..... always on trailer. 1972 series 2A 88, did full off frame restore, HO rebuilt 4 banger, w/HO carbs, parabolic springs, fully locked pickup with roll bar and 34's, 1962 109 series 2, ran but was rust bucket. I might want to go on some of these runs. I can train also. Defender 90 on cover of January 2001 Land Rover World, Used to train club members in prep of off road rallies. Rubicon/Fordyce twice a year, many Moab trips, Panamints/Death Valley, Mendicino mud trips, lots of CO, OR, WA trips, starting to have more time off, maybe we should wheel together? This LS-2 engine will eat your CV's and half shafts like chocolate. Make you sure you upgrade them and the drive shaft.
Hi from South Africa, been using LRs for 50 years, have also owned just about everything else, including 12 of the 'most reliable T brand' vehicles in the world, bottom line is if it has wheels it needs regular tlc or it will break. I can write a book about the positive aspects of LRs verses the rest, specially when used in really extreme conditions like game catching and hunting in desert(Kalahari) conditions, where if you wound an animal you have to catch it(with a vehicle), ironically the D2 has one of the toughest standard suspensions to do this. Hence the reason these are my preference.
What happened to the Tommy who only wanted vehicles with crank windows, manual locks, and power nothing?
He got sick of living in the 1940s 😂 one can only deal with manually unlocking and locking the passenger door 9 times a day for so long
@@TFLcar that's what I thought. Whenever he used to say such things, I told him as somebody who grew up with cars like that, that I would never want to go back. Turns out a little experience goes a long way.

Online reviews are always going to put a negative spin on things - you don’t often post about how your truck did a 500 mile trip with no issues - but it seems like a couple of nice trucks there.
I’m loving my D2 V8 and having watched Christian and Vera on LR Time I’m tempted by a LR3 or LR4.
I had two of those: a 1994 and then a somewhat interior restyled 1998 model. These vehicle handled amazingly well on a highway and are the true champs off road. I owned over 20 cars since then but these Discos still have a very special place in my heart. The only issue was very poor mpg, and this conversion sorts it out! You made me thinking about buying one and doing the same. Thank you very much! 🙏🏻👍

Might want to go ahead and look at oil pan options for that LS2 which has baffles in place so that the pickup works when the engine/vehicle is extremely off-camber.
Hoping to see the Discovery II when it's completed, and a full overview of what you've done to it. I'm sure it will come out great.
Kase and Andrey should have started a dueling LS swap series - the highs , lows, mistakes, mods. Whether the swap resulted in what they wanted when they started 🤔 that might have been cool to watch

We had an 05 absolutely loved it wheeled it in some crazy places we still talk about how it is our fav vehicles of all time. Overall it was quite reliable.
I’ve owned two Disco II’s. One of which my father bought new in December ‘99 and I kept it for 20 years. By the time I sold it the dealer had changed the transmission twice and I’d done a head gasket job and full engine swap myself. For all the character it had, I had to recognize that it was an absolute money pit and sold it.
The LS and transmission swap will address the failings of the Disco. I never had any issues beyond the transmission and engine with either of my Disco’s. I’d love to see a full build series on the process!
I’m in a 100 series Land Cruiser now and while they absolutely require maintenance, the build quality and reliability is light years ahead of the Rover.
found a disco 1 locally on market place for 500 bucks and doing this disco 2 build you have is beyond tempting.
As crazy as it seems, sometimes it’s better to buy the car with slightly higher mileage bc that means a lot of the teething issues have been addressed by the previous owners.
Chase's build reminds me of back in the day when folks with 80s Jags would swap the british engine for a chevy v8 for reliablity
Tommy, had a 2012 LR4 I bought from cars and bids. Expensive to get it up to date but ran great and was awesome as a weekend vehicle. I now have a 2021 RRS SVR because I love the 5.0L engine. It’s also my favorite vehicle. There is something special about all of them, and I think they’re worth the higher cost of ownership.
I just got my 01 disco 2 SE running after a year of it sitting there while i moved my family around. I just need to fill her up and take her on an around the town joy ride to test everything.
The US issues with the 4L & 4.6L Rover v8s are mainly due to the use of low octane fuel. They need to be run on a minimum 91RON to be happy.
Another problem was the program tuning of the engine. It was tuned to get the best mpg, which with such a small engine pushing that heavy landrover causes over heating.
Especially in the hottest parts of the US

Here in the UK the discovery 2 is a much in demand car for off roading but we got the 2.5 td5 engine that goes on for ever ,I’ve just got a Discovery 4 with the sdv6 engine 3.0 with an 8 speed gear box 2013 😊bloody great car with only 68,000 miles and fall Land Rover service history

Truth. I have a JLU Sport S with nearly zero options (tow package, gorilla glass, limited slip on the rear), and have had zero issues over 34k miles. Fancy electronics can be a bane.

I own both. 01 D2 fully built with 4" lift 35s lockers, etc...230k miles. And I still take it everywhere. In fact next week we have a 800 mile trip through the mountains of West Virginia. Ive owned it for 20yrs and trust it more than most others cars.. My other is a 05 lr3 stock except for 32' tires. Its at 288k miles on all original drivetrain and even rear air! I daily drive it and occasionally take it camping. It really is a swiss army knife. If I had to choose, Id stick with my D2. It can do all the super hard stuff and still cruise at 70mph on the highway.

That "rover" V8 is actually a Buick. GM designed the engine in the early 1960s and eventually sold it to Rover in 1965. So, you're taking a GM engine out, and replacing it with another one!
I totally with Tommy's sentiments on the Disco3, I have owned 4 without any major issues, crossed the Kalahari desert overland and thousands of off road miles in them. It's a van, a luxury 7 seater and yes a true 4x4 no other vehicle can be compared even the more modern Range Rovers/Landrovers (other than the Defender).
I was sooooo tempted to buy one recently but after thinking about it a moment I thought "even im not quite stupid enough" so i bought a van :) And I used to work there :)
My lr3 has been the best car I've EVER owned also, 8 years, 250k miles and NO issues but some maintenance. Just not a car for people who need toyota ease of ownership
We had discovery's here from 1997 to 2021, a tdi and 2 td5's....life is so much less stressful now, the things often broke down and constantly needed fixing!

Love what you are doing Kase. I completely understand your why. That is a cool rig especially with the 6L GM and 6 speed. I have the same truck, same original color, but haven’t had the issues with the 4L that you were having. I thought the company making the LS kits stopped making them this year, but obviously you found another company. Please keep everyone posted. I’m interested if your swap will allow you to keep Traction control? I heard you say lockers so maybe that’s the end goal. Have fun!
ACE stopped making their kits I believe, or at least stopped selling them to the public which is a blessing as they were very problematic. You're better off going with Marks or just doing it yourself. Of course keep in mind none of these are smog legal in CA or any of the states that follow CA rules. It is possible to do it legally, but there are far more hoops to jump through.

2016 LR4 owner here. Bought it new. Now approaching 100k miles. One coolant leak and one AC refrigerant leak. No other problems. I love the car. It is the best SUV I’ve owned. Family car, cross country, comfort, looks amazing, best car I’ve owned in the snow. There should be this style SUV from every company but right now the only new SUV like it for anything like reasonable money is the new Land Cruiser

I have an LR3 v8 with the extremely rare locking rear diff and it is an EXTREMELY capable vehicle.
I’ve always loved the look of the LR3 but I would never take the chance and buy one because of it’s reputation
I’ve owned a D110, Series III, and RR Classic, and rest of my family has owned a Disco I, Disco II, and RR P38. I learned a lot about fixing cars early on. Now I’ve switched to Toyotas... A cheap Land Rover can certainly be tempting, but just not worth it unless you have the expendable time and money

I recently bought a 220,000 mile LR3 to compliment my E46 M3. It's been owned and maintained by Land Rover nerds most of its life so it's in great shape despite the miles. I've done a bunch of preventative maintenance in the hopes of keeping it on the road for many more miles. So far I've just had to replace the parking brake shoes, and patch up a slightly worn fuel sender line that was shorting on the frame.
Incidentally I also had a bad experience with Terrafirma. I had to return two of their roof racks due to comically bad manufacturing defects. I was so put off the brand that I'm planning to replace the perfectly good Terrafirma ladder that came with the truck just because I don't want their logo on my truck.

I have owned a D1 bought brand new broke down after collecting from the dealer also owned a D2, now own a from new D4. The D4 has caused some problems. The D2 was the best, drove all over Europe towing our big caravan ( trailer to you ) never missed beat.
If it's easy then let's get cracking ! Looking forward to seeing it on the road.
I love my LR3, 207k miles and still running great. Now with that said, I wouldn't touch a LR4 with a 10 foot pole.

As a proud only of a 175k mike LR3 I can say it’s an awesome truck.. I love it and is use it as my daily.. The 4.4L V8 is glorious . BUT… it does require maintenance and it has broken on me.. maybe a little more than a typical truck but I do my own repairs/maintenance. Even with the hiccups I’m keeping mine..
348k miles on my 01 p38 and 182k on my 19 Range Rover sport SC no major issues on the sport
Kade, think about how much car you’re getting for under $30,000, maybe well under $25,000. You made a great decision! Well done.
Assuming you're re-using that lt230 transfer case, are you sure it'll take so much extra power from the LS?
There's HD uprades available for that transfer box (at least in the UK).
Without a single hicup. the LT230 is extremely robust - by far the most robust piece of the drivetrain. We routinely use them with 40" tires, LS motors, etc and not for simple overlanding or pavement pounding, but for actual rock crawling. Now if you expect it not to leak....well, better call Ashcroft for a sleaved intermediate shaft as they virtually all start to leak there eventually. While you've got them on the phone ask about a 1:1 high if you're doing an LS and a deeper low if you want to crawl it.
Its the bathtub hazard model. Things fail more often early (lemons), work okay in their midlife, and start failing when they age.
Really enjoying these videos. Just bought a 2008 LR3, HSE. After having 2 Classics, 1 P38, 1D1 and 4 D2's. I like the LR3 more than all the rest combined! Keep up the good work.
The biggest problem with Land Rovers has always been the engine, since the first ones in 1948 ! They failed in their early USA sales efforts during the 1950's partly due to having a significantly worse power to weight ratio than a Willys Jeep. That was fine for Africa, not the USA. Thru the 1960's and 70's, they continued to be grossly underpowered compared to competitive vehicles on the market. Later the Buick aluminum V8 helped a bit with the power, but was less reliable. Best thing for ANY Land Rover you actually drive is an engine swap !!! Even my 1958 series I model is LS swapped , I drive it every day, all over the western states, and am driving it out from California to going wheeling in Moab again this weekend !
You did not mention the ML W163. Tommy, you should have given it another chance, buying a 2001 ML witch was the model and year I had, and it was as good as the Land Rover LR3 off-road.
I drove through wild mountains and offroad parks, never broke on me.
Survivorship bias is great - if it has lasted this long, it probably will do OK. if you bought it new, there were so many initial problems that suck when you just bought a new car.
Kase - Are you also swapping in an LT230 Tcase, or at least adapting the existing Tcase to “lock”? If not you’re basically going to have a “one wheel drive” off-roader…
Also, just get new driveshafts from Tom Woods.
Have you guys checked the Steering Knuckles for cracking?

I’m in Australia and bought almost this exact vehicle about 6 months ago to fill in for my 2014 (Classic) Defender while it was being repaired after hitting a Kangaroo.
Paid $1500AUD for a 2007 SE Petrol V6 (these are the most popular petrol engines we got in Aus). 180000km so It had issues but nothing that couldn’t be sorted out with a bit of online knowledge and some mechanical skills.
Very comfortable and capable vehicle but also feels utilitarian rather than luxurious inside.
Still haven’t been able to bring myself to get rid of it 😂
Shoulda gotten a first gen Sequoia. Just as comfortable and just as capable (although you'll want a 2" lift)

I fully support this motor swap and I want to see/hear more once it progresses along. More excited about that than tommy's honestly.
… so in conclusion: Land Rover’s are great vehicles so long as you either buy one that was a rebadged Ford or buy one and replace all the Land Rover parts.
Technically not a rebadged Ford, but used a Ford derived engine.
Not a rebadged Ford at all. Also, only the V6 was a Ford based engine, but even it had balance shafts added and a more robust oiling system added. There are some videos out there of the factory testing the LR3 smashing over concrete holes, going over jumps and all kinds of madness- just pummeling the thing.

TerraFirma....there's your problem! You want sliders for a Rover, you call Tactical Rovers. Most of the stuff from euro vendors is made for very light-duty use. They don't rock crawl. On Rovicon, we have a no-TerraFirm rule about their diff guards for example!
The lr3 is known for having issues with the drive shaft and the wheel bearings going out.I just replaced mine. Still love it though
Did wheel bearings on mine at 132k. How many miles yours have when the driveshaft needed replacing?

You're not finding any shop in the Denver area with a $100-120/hour labor rate. Try twice that...

Jeep XJ/ZJ/WJ still beats the pants off both. I still am drawn toward the Land Rovers. I think making an OEM billet engine block might be the ticket for those Discovery II's or any LR's with those low quality engines, then you get to say it's all original.
I'll still take my disco 2 with the 4.0 V8 with 280,000 miles. Would be embarrassed by by swapping an LS in it I would put the td5 with manual transmission.
