    The Land Rover Discovery 1&2 are probrably the most underrated 4x4,s around. When properly maintained and cared for they are reliable, robust and very capable of almost any offroad situation. My 2004 D2 which I bought new has 197k on it. It’s all about the maintenance.

      Rover Ron I've just driven 4700 miles in our 2001 td5 discovery around Scandinavia and Northern Europe with my family... we also towed my old Sankey army trailer with the camping gear in it!
      Had the discovery since new and it's been a brilliant vehicle, it's not been without its problems but it's been problems you fix when you get home!
      It returned 27mpg on the journey which it brilliant considering we were loaded up!

      The Disco 1 was the primary team vehicle for 8 out of the 19 years of the camel trophy more than any other vehicle its not underrated off-roader people are just generally uninformed and unfamiliar with it(especially in the states) so they just take the only thing they have repeatedly heard about British cars (that they are unreliable junk) and go with it even though in reality they have zero experience with them and the friend they heard this from has the same amount of experience with one. This especially shown because some many people are so afraid of working on them their selves and get dragged into paying out the nose for maintenance in the states because Rovers are considered foreign luxury vehicle when old rovers especially are designed to be easily worked on and maintained out in the field if needed.

      Tbh iv had land rovers for 22 years I was land rover through and through , iv recently sold my 1952 80in and my 110 300tdi and bought a land cruiser 80 series.. and I wish I done it years ago now ..by far a superior vehicle in all aspects were light years ahead of the old discos and arguably way ahead of td5 discos .

      The boss of my dad had (my dad also used them for the work) from brand new a Discovery 1, 1996, bye bye gearbox with less than 80000 km. it was still in warranty and the official Land Rover agency offered him a new gear box or an important discount for the next model of Discovery which he choose. 50000 km. and engine smoking and drinking oil like crazy. Then he went for a Montero 2000, that thing is still in my town alive and kicking with more than 500 000 km and it looks and feels like new and according to the actual owner (second owner) never had any major problem. Where i live the Discovery from 1994 were more popular than Montero or 4Runner however the last 2 ones are very common to see on the roads, not the same for the Discovery.
      There is a reason why vehicles have the fame they have.

      No kidding! We have such poor wheeling out here. Besides the very limited access, there's nothing even remotely that interesting. I used to really want to move to Cali, but I've since decided CO/UT area is the place to be for someone who likes the outdoors.

    Hey guys! just a tip for steep descents in an auto LR. Next time try using the hand brake(or park brake, or whatever USA types call it). Don't just yank it full on, just a click or two depending on how worn your shoes or cable may be. Remember that the hand brake is transmission mounted, so acts more so on trans as well as rear axle, but in centre diff lock mode acts solidly on both axles.
    That's the way I use it to help keep speed slower than it otherwise would in my auto(old D1 300 tdi here).
    ps. don't try this technique on a normal car with rear brake operated handbrake system unless you want to slide down with the rears all locked up! Only works well on a trans mounted handbrake system.

    The reason your hill descent is too fast is because of the bigger tires. The calibration from factory is set for a certain amount of feedback torque and with bigger tires the torque feedback is greater because of having more leverage on the hubs turning them easier. I've used hill descent with stock tired and it slows the disco down easier. The 33's tend to push the descent control a little past it's ability to hold the disco back.

    Yes it's all about the maintenance......,my 2001 discovery 2 has 124k miles on it and it runs and drives like a new car. I replaced the head gaskets at around 100k miles and resurfaced the cylinder heads, and installed new valve guide seals...radiator, water pump, all hoses etc.....love this old truck. The frames in these older discos can also rust badly in the rear section....so keep it clean and check/treat for rust. I have driven this truck through almost 3 ft of snow...it is unstoppable, and the stereo is amazing.:)

    I wish I kept my 98 Explorer. Those Ford 8.8 diffs are no joke, and well supported, so he could put LSDs or Lockers in them easily and cheaply enough.

    My proudest moment as owner of a '99 D2 was in January 2010 (I think it was), when we got an enourmous and unusal snow storm that put over 3' of snow on the ground here in SW PA. Streets in my neighborhood were impassable for up to 3 weeks and some vehicles were snowed over and unavailable to their owners during that time.
    I lived on a street that was low on the priority list for snow removal. After it stopped snowing we had a gorgeous day. I got into my D2 and put it into low I think the only time I had it. I drove around the neighborhood and ran my errands. It was tough slow going. I noticed people with snow shovels stopped to watch me go by. Then some came over stopped me and told me the Land Rover was the only vehicle that successfully had made it through their street. They had seen pickups and Jeeps try and all turn back. (Not trying to diss Jeep owners; I'm an old CJ5/7 fan). They were impressed.
    To this day there are people in my old neighborhood who will say, you may have a 4x4, but if the decal doesn't say Land Rover, it's not an off road vehicle.

      Corry Arbuckle being both a Jeep owner and a Land Rover owner (Disco 3 and Cherokee, but owned Wranglers and 2 D1s) from NH, I can promise you that had everything to do with your tires and nothing to do with your car. The 4WD systems work virtually the same. Both typically come with open diffs which would’ve made the difference.

    My 1999 100 series TLC had only a 2 inch lift OME and 34's. I did this exact route in 2015. That was a good time!!

    The term "rescue rig" is accurate.
    I have an 02 disco and I pulled a jeep commander, 1500 Silverado, ford f-150, Ford explorer, and a Nissan out of 3 feet of snow on the same night. I am completely stock right now but got them all out.. the D2 puts in work💪🏽

      Not to mention the idiot let's his dog run beside him.....I've offlroaded with a guy that did that...really pissed me off because the dog kept running in front of my truck and I couldn't see him, when asked to put the dog in his truck the idiot said '' no worries he is fine''.

    A note... Tommy discussed that the HDC in his D2 was running too fast. In my D3, I can speed up/slow down using the cruise control +/-, try that out next time. Not sure when that feature was introduced, but it makes HDC a FAR more versatile tool vs just one speed.

    I'm adding this trail to my list for next year. Everyone has heard of Ophir, Black Bear, Imogene, Engineer, etc, but no body ever speaks of this trail.

      Have you done the others you mentioned? I'm looking to pick up a camping/wheeling rig, and a road trip to CO is on the list of things I'm going to do with it. Right now thinking of a first gen Sequoia. They have ATRAC, can easily be lifted 2-3", and fit 33's. Do you think a vehicle that size could do any of these trails? A don't want a 4R as they're a little small (and overpriced). My other choice is a 100 series Land Cruiser, but the good ones are $$$. The Sequoia is the best value.

      Michael Smith I have not done any of the Colorado trails yet, but plan to next summer. From the videos I have watched on these trails none of them appear difficult, but they are a bit scary in some places. The switchbacks on Black Bear are pretty tight, even for a 2 door JK.

    I have a discovery 1 land rover with a diesel engine .. On the Island of Madeira it has been sitting in a garage in storage for past 18 years.. any ideas in what need to be done in getting its started and suggestions on upgrading gear on it.I am moving to Portugal and intend getting it back on the road

    To bad you cut out the rescue part. Every car breaks down sometimes, and not all drivers are equal, besides there are good days and bad days for all of us. It's just a fact, nothing to be unhappy about.

    The slide on red cone is nothing what it use to be. I think at some point a bulldozer notched the trail and removed most of the slide. I remember the slide was very soft and you would come done it with part of the mountain sliding with you. The trick was to unlock the front hubs so yo could steel steer as came down the slide.. Like the trail leader said the trail changes over time.

    Yep ARB bumper sucks if you tap some rocks. On my di2 I slammed it a little and it completely fast forward a few inches and destroyed both my fenders. I went with a Slimmer cheap one on eBay with a better approach angle. The one thing I can say about the ARB is that it hooks onto your frame on both inside and outside of the frame instead of just along the outside so for winching it is a really good bumper No Doubt

    Was the differential lock on the entire time you were on the trail? I always heard the steering would lock up some but you didn't seem to be having any trouble navigating the trail. Or were you just locking the differential when you needed it and otherwise just relaying on the standard traction control?

      once you are off the bitumen the centre diff should remain locked, after you are bogged its too late the wheels can spin to unload the diff if required

    Just a thought I didn't hear you mention manual mode of the transmission when off road, are you aware that in low range if you select sport mode with the mode switch the transmission stays in the selected gear this is a big help on the steep bits

    @10:30 is that explorer even in 4x4? Those front tires aren't spinning.
    Also, your land rover needs more flex. A lot more. There is no reason for that tire to lift at 9:46.

    Great installment on the Discovery adventure! Looks like it is the right vehicle for this type of adventure - did not see anywhere that the traction control was making you wish you had the diff-locks instead. Just wish Landys were more confidence inspiring on the reliability side of the equation.

    Hey guys I have a very similar Disco2 myself. Did you ever go with the inline thermostat I finally did and while it's amazing! I run in the 180s. Also coil pack relocation kit is a must if you end up having to do yours! Oh yeah did you ever discover the mode button in low range to lock it into 2nd or 3rd? Helps a lot

    The fan for the coolant does not even kick on till 210 degrees and the hot mark is something in the 240 range. I would not worry about temps in the 195 to 210 range on a disco 2... just keep an eye on the actual temps.

    198/197 degrees is pretty reasonable if you have the AC on. With AC off you might only be in the low 190's. Anything lower and your thermostat starts closing, it's not like it will run at 150, the thermostat will keep it around 190-200.

      Not to mention, most late model vehicles are designed to run at higher temps like that. My old ZJ Grand Cherokee ran at 210, no matter what.

    if you think the traction control works good you should add Truetracs front and rear, I had a buddy who had truetracs in his 2004 and it made me want to get them in my 2001 because they are a night and day difference when the traction control kicks in.

    Watching the video again. I will have to say I'm glad you said get the strap when they exploder couldn't make it. All he was doing was digging bigger holes which causes more erosion of the trail. If you can't make it suck it up and wench out

      Advice from a long time offroader/rock crawler. Go as low as you can without the bead breaking loose. I typically run 9-11 psi. On a heavier vehicle go to 12-15. If your tires new you can go a little lower because the sidewalls will be stiff and need to "break in".
      The point is, experiment. See how low you can go, 1psi at a time per trip, until you find a spot where you get a good ride, maximum grip, without breaking your bead or running them too flat.

    HEHE, I love your videos, especially the off-road adventures. Hoping to get my 2002 4.0 LR2 in the same condition yours is in eventually. Having to rebuild the heads upon purchasing it (fortunately can do this my self and wasn't that bad since the timing wasn't adjusted at all to do the job, but then to realize I have other problems with the transmission and electronics shutting it down with codes and limp mode (The quick release connect from the transmission to the radiator let go and wont stay in., , so we will be looking at that in the spring as the budget isn't as high as yours. I payed $600 for the LR, about $500 for the parts to rebuild the head including all the gaskets and new head bolts (couldnt afford the Stud and nut set as is recommended and I torqued my head-bolts down to 120lbs hoping that it will hold out!) but my 4x4 shifter is seized up as is the norm when it's not used for a while and didn't have the right maintenance, I have to take the center console out and work the shifter free as we see in other videos on this particular subject. I will get at that soon but in Eastern Canada it gets cold and Im not a spring chicken so I think I will wait until warmer weather to get at it, as I have other projects on the go as well. Also hope to make some great adventure vids like this in the new year. Videos like this keep me dreaming for the hopes of getting on the trails just like in this video; To go where no man has gone before (or few men lol) but maybe I should get a dog too lol.     Have a look at my avatar, there’s another high mileage cheap d2 getting the job done. On the climb it’s on in this picture there’s 30 plus vehicles which couldn’t reach the top, they tried very hard and snapped axles, cv’s, one diff centre and a roll over.     The red Defender 90 is a non civilian vehicle originally, it is what is known as a "wolf" which were made specifically for the British military. Then after a certain amount of time are released and sold to the general public. Funny how its ended up in the USA. A bit of trivia for our American cousins there!

      Curious about your non civilian comment, the red Defender being left hand drive and British military being right hand drive doesn’t add up unless a conversion has been done.

      Possibly a conversion or the likeliest theory is it came of the production line in LHD destined for overseas military or aid work. Perhaps it was originally a UN vehicle or even direct to the Canadian military and then made its way south at some point.

    I used my hill decent control once on my d2. And never again. Manual mode low rang 1st gear way slower and more controlled.

    You guys always talk about power at Denver altitudes. Was there a noticeable difference at +12k feet with the engine? Or maybe you don't notice since you're just kind of crawling up the hill?

    It's a 2004, It isn't even old enough to drive itself! It isn't an old vehicle. Use a string to tether the bumper trim. You can use double sided tape instead of the clips. Each time it falls off (which it will) then the string will keep it from falling off all the way. I have an 03 D2, I know about the bumper trims from experience.

      i have had 4 D2"s and currently drive a 2000. i laughed when i saw that part pop off! i keep a parts rig for those bits..your idea with the string is great!

      not sure if it's the heat, but all the plastic is dumpster filler, don't even sneeze on any of it. they made thousands of changes from D1 to D2 and couldn't find something better? On the subject of changing things, outer door handles, GREAT, but then moved the inner latch so you can't FCUKING find it. GRRRRR

      I use 50lb test fishing line to secure my trim..if it falls off I won't lose it :)
