I agree, and it's been mentioned in the comments in almost every video. He does mention the cleanability sometimes as like an after thought, but it should be it's own category.
Dan is the only reason why I'm subbed to this channel, though they only let him out of his cage once a month to do a video. I wish this was a weekly series.
I'd just like to say that while these are entertainment, they are also very useful. I went shopping with my mum for a new blender and a few other things. I approached the options in the same manner as Dan. I tested them left-handed and asked my mum to imagine using it with wet/slippery hands. Ultimately, we chose a KitchenAid food processor that was at the high end of her budget but passed those tests far better than the alternatives. As well as simple clicky clacky levers instead of knobs and buttons, it slotted on in a different way to other blenders I've seen in my 20years as a chef so there were less bits to break. Our second choice failed when I pointed out how much grip strength it required to open and got my mum to test it (and imagine having slightly slippery fingers doing so, although really it's because her hands/wrists are weak and she's getting older). We also said no to an egg beater for similar reasons. Anyway, if the team sees this, thank you. It's entertainment, sure, but this series is teaching me how to examine potential purchases with a logical and analytical manner. Edit: I'm not sponsored by them but I was amazed by it's good design while the others all basically seemed the same. Hopefully it's as good as it looks and lasts a long time.
These videos have definitely helped me learn what design features to look for and what might be pitfalls. The re-design segment is particularly good, it takes it away from just being a product review and teaches us about how these things work and what to consider when shopping.
I think there should be a video showing Dan reviewing some of his own gadgets to see if he can make them better than he did when he originally designed them.
An alternative to the splatter guard is to deep fry in a wok. if you have one large enough, it accomplishes roughly the same goal without adding something else to clean.
This man makes my day, anytime I'm stressed at work, feeling sad, or overwhelmed, he just saves me! Love the view on things and the ecological thought of not producing stuff that we don't need. Thanks for being awesome, lots of love from Vienna 🖤
My engineering design course showed a video of him talking about the importance of design the other day. I was very surprised to see his face on the board when I walked in.
I LOVE my Frywall and I'm happy to see it got a high rating. It's the only splatter guard that continues working while flipping the food, which is when it splatters the most. A simple, ingenious invention.
I don't think he understood or demonstrated the purpose of that device correctly. I think the point of it is to be both a strainer/spider and also tongs, but all in one tool so you don't need two. Hence "two in one". Does that make it a good tool? Hell no lol I think the end result is a strainer that's too small to be effective tongs that are awkward to use because the strainer gets in the way. But he still only really showed off half the device. Not that I know how you would even make use of a strainer that small. Maybe if you wanted to make a very small amount of funnel cake it could be useful lmao
I think that first gadget could have looped the handles around the pot handles to keep them out of the oil and keep the basket from collapsing, but that would be a very specific type of use where you would need to have the right pot for it.
Not sure about the one he tested, but I've got one and it works great...it specifically mentions the size of pot to use it on. It doesn't pull the handles in OR lose product (as much, still could be one or two), since it ends up sitting upright or slightly out against the wall of the pot...
I've got a similar product, but with a collapsible handle that sticks out of the pot. It's not as small as the product shown but I just keep it in one of the pots so it doesn't take up extra space, and it works like a charm.
@@LydiaTarine12 That's the one thing I find with some of these videos. While good overall, it falls apart if you don't use products as intended. Granted, a lot of people don't, but if you're testing something, you KINDA have to.
I definitely think the fry wall splatter guard is the best of these, I hate traditional mesh splatter guards, I think they're really ineffective and super hard to clean
They're not very effective against messes, but they are effective at stopping you from being burned as any oil that gets through is too small to burn you
The frying set isn't actually a real 'set', some company has just bundled a pair of tongs and a basket from elsewhere with a Japanese style frying pot. The pot itself is amazing; it's designed like that with the rack on the lid because karaage (Japanese fried chicken) is fried multiple times by putting the chicken in and out in quick intervals, and tempura can cook so quickly you need to be able to pull the pieces out rapidly, so having the rack right on the pot lid helps the chef get the timing right. 😊
this. i have one without the basket, its great. even if it didn't have the rack, i save a ton of oil since it's taller than it is wide so i don't have to choose between shallow fry and wasting oil.
I would definitely buy that deep frying set if it were available in my country! Living in a tiny studio apartment with tiny kitchen and nowhere to put a drying rack, having that would've been nice!
I really appreciate the diagrams, you have such a clear way to express what you find that could be changed for these products. I have no idea why I like these videos so much but that is definitely part of it.
That silicone collar might also be great on the pasta or soup pot to keep thing from boiling over. I love a nice versatile item! Are we sure it wouldn't melt on the side from a gas burner?
Yey! Another Dan video! The first one isn't a frying gadget! My grandma used to have one. She used it to swing lettuce dry and to store (hanging on a nail ) things like apple or walnuts. It also had red rubbery stuff on the handles so you could use them as a stand.
I used the 2 in 1 Fry Clip and it's good to fry some stuff while rinse it at the same time. The main problem is the tong really small to grip the stuffs so a bit dangerous.
I see a problem with the splatter guard that was not addressed. I am not even 5 ft tall, if I put that on my pan I'm not going to be able to see the food. I would have to do the same thing I do when I use really tall pans, I would have to get out the steps stool to cook.
The only thing I miss about the left handed oil test is talking about pinch points! Let's get into the nitty gritty of squished fingers and ouchy palms 🥺😂
I'd make the tortilla fryer basket handles connect by hinge. Add that with the redesign on the wiring of the baskets could help make for consistent bowl shaping.
I always wanted tortilla bowls but I was not going to spend the money on a wire rack....his use of the sifter was ingenious. Sure it doesn't look the greatest but it is one less thing I would have to buy to only use once a year.
@@XCodes my mom owns some metal bowls that tortillas can nest in (they have wavy sides so the tortilla stays put w/o pie weights) and it works great for baking tortillas! you get the crispy bowls without the 3,000 calories of oil!

The last set is actually known as a tempura frying pot. It's used with the 2-in-1 tongs or chopsticks, depending on which food is being fried. I have never seen a tempura pot being used in tandem with any kind of frying baskets - makes absolutely no sense since the opening is small. The only ”basket” would be a skimmer to remove any loose bits during batches.
Thanks this series for saving my money and nerves! Sometimes I don't even realise that you don't need a fancy gadget to cook something specific. The only thing I keep thinking about is egg cracker... I really love my morning bacon with eggs, but I just have no luck with an egg shell being outside of the pan 😅
Dan, I've actually made tortilla shells using two shivs, but I put one of those stainless steel pot watchers in the bottom under the tortilla to allow it to stand on its own a lot better since you get that flat bottom.
the mini deep fryer its actually what japanese people commonly use, but its just the pot. That square basket was probably randomly added to make more money
I love these episodes. As a person with dexterity issues I can safely say the left hand slippery test is irrelevant. Someone with dexterity issues is not likely to deal with a heavy pot of oil. I have trouble draining a pot of pasta. :)
Yeah, I anticipated no left handed oil test on these ones for the potential danger. I don't want to make assumptions but if you have dexterity issues and you want fried foods, the first and last step is "get someone else to do it for you".
I don't think the intention of the fry basket is to fold in. It looks like you're supposed to fold it out and those fins would hold it up in the pot, then the handles would be outside of the oil and be relatively easy to grab. Looking around a couple similar amazon listings I see pictures of just that, the handles folded out.
I believe he misused that fry basket at the beginning. I think you're supposed to leave those handles open against the top of the rim of the pot. And that's how you keep everything in the basket. kind of surprised they wouldn't have looked that up before reviewing it and giving it such a low score.
I have one of those tempura pots. its made with stainless steel and all the edges aren't sharp but aren't dull either. They are a pain to clean also I cut my thumb scrubbing the tongs because they are just metal and full of groves. not a bad noodle bowl though. I now use it as my k noodle bowl instead of my fry pot.
"Why would you design a square basket for a round hole?" To prevent overcrowding and catastrophic oil temperature drop. I bet it's a pretty common error to just pack deep friers to brimming and crash the temperature, ruining the dish (even if it does come up to a food safe temp, it'll absorb way too much oil at that point and become mushy instead of crispy)
The only deep frying gadget you need is a countertop deep fryer. A basket sized perfectly for the oil container and temperature control beat doing it on the stovetop every time. And you don't have to worry about moving oil back into a bottle or just tossing perfectly good oil, just leave it in the fryer until next time, replace it only when it gets too old.
The taco bowl maker doesn't need a 2pc design. Lay the tortilla flat on the hot oil and use a bowl shaped sieve or even a small saucepan to submerge the tortilla and hold it there. Within about 10 seconds the shape will be set and then just let it finish and retrieve it with tongs. Ta da!!
That first gadget, iirc, youre supposed to fold the handles all the way around and flip the thing over so that they fall "open" rather than closed, and keep off the side of the pot. So that's on Dan, potentially.
I will say that the fry basket wasn’t designed to be used quite that way. The triangles are supposed to sit on the pot edge and fan out and the handles do the same.
Clean the stove or clean the Fry Wall, still have to clean and cleaning the stove kills two birds with on cleaning, ya gotta clean the stove eventually... My mother had that fry basket, I don't recall her having jumpers, but her basket handles interlaced, that was over 60 odd years ago though, probably made on this side of the Pacific.
Fa(s)t notice: french fries fried in vegetable oil have no cholesterol! Cholesterol is an animal alcohol with structural and hormone precursor functions, plants don't have it. What we usually call "good and bad cholesterol" are associations of some of your own body's proteins, with fats and cholesterol itself, forming the lipoproteins used to transport cholesterol and some fats around, which are the good (high density) and bad (low density) cholesterols as we know them.
