Dan has been in the industry for 40 years? Might be cool to have a short "top 3 of the decade" video where he looks at big kitchen innovations in history
The one thing I wish was included in the scoring process, is how easy it is to clean the gadget. Often the gadget will perform as it should but it's almost impossible to keep hygienic, and often it's not machine washer friendly despite not being electric. For me as a consumer, hygiene and not having to waste a lot of time cleaning an item, is important.
@@diakounknown1225 I have a similar nut chopper for when I do large batches of cookies or bars and I have to say it is really easy to clean. It is also dishwasher safe (at least the one I have is) so I just toss it in there after I am done.
That's the reason why I have very few gadgets in my kitchen. There is no dishwasher in my rented apartment anyway so an easy to clean, space-saving knife is almost always my first port of call for most tasks.
I'm curious if anyone else has bought gadgets based on Dan's recommendations? I bought the standing cheese grater that suctions to the counter top with a crank handle and I LOVE IT! I have fresh grated cheese to my heart's content now. Thanks Dan!
What I've learned from this channel is that gadgets that try to be overly futuristic usually fail the hardest, and the ones that are just old fashioned mechanical or look like a cartoon character usually work the best.
I actually own the nut chopper. I use it to chop peanuts for sundaes and I'm very happy with it. I have also used it to chop Fun sized candy bars for ice cream mix ins.
The fifth device (The Chopper) is great for peanuts. I used to make a lot of pad thai at home and having a pepper grinder-like device on the table to dispense crushed peanuts directly on to your food is awesome!
Still waiting the episode where Dan reviews kitchen gadgets that he designed many many years ago and how he would’ve designed it better with his current knowledges/experiences.
I feel like it would have worked a LOT better with the metal bit on the other side so that the rubber is helping to crack the nut, not working against it.
It's not supposed to crack nuts. It's literally just supposed to keep the pieces together and make a hammer less loud. They do say you can use your hand, but the instructions with it show a hammer. However it's more of a design piece than an actual useful product. It's supposed to go on a countertop and look attractive.
It's too adorable the way that he placed the squirrel on his arm and took him home... I HOPE THAT HE CAN PRESERVE IT!!! (Can anyone tell me if Dan actually have on his hands the cutr squirrel?)
One suggestion I would make would be to have him read manufacturer instructions for use. Sometimes devices seem ineffective, but are extremely effective once you use it correctly. Granted, these reviewed devices aren’t overly complicated, but you never know when the instructions hold a gem of wisdom to make the device work well.
My mom had the nut chopper shown at the end. Mostly she used it for peanuts which she used as one of a dozen or so toppings for Curry. But she also used it for crispy bacon to make bacon bits, herbs which she would use to season soups or in a bouquet garni, hard boiled eggs and other items (again as toppings for curry) which she would allow each person to choose to personal taste. The kid who had been best during the week got to use it, which we saw more as a prize than a chore.
It's difficult to crack an almond when you lay it flat, that's probably why the dome doesn't work for almonds. With the mallet you should hold the almond on it's edge to crack it. In my experience it should work better.
Other than Frank and Lorenzo, Dan is the best man on this channel. Edit: In this comment, I was talking about the recurring men on this channel. Anthony and Stephan haven't shown up in a long time. Moreover, both Dans are good, but if I had to pick one, Dan Fermosa rules. Finally, I personally like Frank's humor more than Saul's, but everyone has his own opinion.
I would like to see how a hand crank nut cracker designed like a rock crusher would work. A pair of corrugated jaws, one vertical and stationary, the other curved and on connected off axis to the axel on a cam so it moved forward and down as you cranked.
If this guy was to ever buy the rights to any of the gadgets he's reviewed and sold them with the modified improvements he showed in the video I would search the world to purchase it
We have a hand crank that lowers a piston to crack the nut by putting pressure at the tip and tail. It has an adjustable threaded point to make it fit all nut sizes. And it always cracks and leaves a perfect nut. It’s great.
Yeah , almonds are so much harder to crack 😆 I used to have something like that squirrel , but every time I’d try to crack almonds it’d be so hard. Walnuts and pecans so much easier.
My favourite nut cracker has always been an adjustable vise grip wrench. I set it up so that it just holds the nut, then I tighten it until the shell breaks
In my experience of cracking quite a few free pecans I've picked up. I like the basic sturdy nut cracker I got at the hardware store. The one in the yellow/green box. I like it because as I bring the lever down I can control the force, stop & reposition the nut so I'm continuing the crack in just the right spot to simply crack it in half so there's a full nut on each side. Then after I get a pile I go back with a pair of needle nose pliers & snip off each end & I can usually get the nut out while or close to whole. But it's really just a developed technique of spending hours watching TH-cam while I crack tons of pecans.
Omg that nut chopper! I felt my allergies raise their head at the sight and sound of that thing 😂😂😂 My mom has been using one of those since the 90s for all the Christmas cookies I'm allergic to!
It took me watching every video in this playlist up to this point over the course of a few months to connect that the DESIGN experts name is Dan FORMosa
my grandma had a nut chopper, but that thing was super heavy. and it never chrunched nuts evenly. no matter what you did, part was course, part was fine
the real trouble with the dome nutcracker is that it skips the most important part about what makes a nutcracker crack nuts: a force multiplier. You might as well just be smacking the nut with your bare hands, even with that little tiny metal bit there
Considering I have a nut grinder like that one that’s close to 100 years old, they do the same for putting in or on cakes. They have improved it by giving you a bigger place to put the nut halves and a deeper place for the ground ones to land.
I think for the squirrel, a ratcheting mechanism with a release button would be a good idea, it’d would help with generating mechanical advantage for people with weaker hands.

Hey, Dan and Epicurious! Make a video testing ice cream machines!
For the Number 4, why not put 2 handles on it. One for the Moving part and one for the other. Both should be at a similar height. They could be screwed on for smaller packagesize.

Maybe a deluxe version of the automatic cracker could have a two-stage system. The first stage does a gentle little squeeze. The resulting pieces go through a sorting mechanism. Small pieces go straight out into the receiving bowl. Larger pieces fall into the second cracker, paired to that same crank so this can all happen at the same time, and are greeted with a mechanism that accepts the same sized pieces as the first one but squishes them a little more before releasing them. This is similar, in some ways, to how a movie theater popcorn popper works. The heat comes from the bottom of the kernel bucket.
