    Seeing this video inspired me to make custom Lego minifigs of one of my own characters, and it worked out wonderfully! Thank you Kraftsman! I never would have done this without you. ♥
    *I used regular (laser) printer paper, and it worked out just fine.* After designing and printing out my expressions using the scaled template you have, I just brushed a tiny bit of white acrylic paint onto the paper over the eye shines, teeth, and any other colours that needed to be lighter/brighter than the yellow brick underneath. (If you want to match your printed colours exactly with official Lego brick colours, Bricklink has an awesome colour reference you can use!) And if you're like me and don't have your own laser printer, your school or library almost definitely will.
    After the white paint dried, I applied the acrylic medium, wrapped it up and let it sit for an hour or more, as you said. Once it was dry I would *submerge the whole thing in warm water* and gently peel/rub the wet paper off with my thumb once it was nice and saturated. This process took a long time, but the results look great once you figure out just how much thumb pressure to use. (My first couple Lego heads were not so great! You definitely have to dry and re-moisten the paper several times and brush away the crumbs that come loose to avoid accidentally scratching off the design underneath. Always print extras, and have some extra heads on hand too for trial-and-error! A tiny bit of soap in the water might aid this process, but I haven't tested it thoroughly.)
    Most of the paper can come off with rubbing, but any very thin white shreds that remain will "disappear" when you add the clear spray sealer.
    For anyone else who might want to make a whole custom Lego: Templates for the full Lego bodies can be found on Eurobricks, plus a lot of awesome facial expressions that you can use to get the line weight and eyes looking juuust right and in the "new" Lego style.
    Not all of these are pre-scaled to print, but as Kraftsman says in his DIY LEGO DECAL vid, a Lego Torso is exactly 1.5cm across the base, so if you have a programme with built-in rulers like Photoshop, it should be easy to scale it all right. I drew my designs several times larger, then scaled them down when I was ready to print. (300dpi)
    These expressions were very handy reference for me:
    eurobricks(dot)com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/30761-minifigure-head-decals-130-facial-expressions/
    The medium I used was Liquitex glazing Medium (leftover from my painting days), which is thinner than the one in the video. Brushing just a thin film onto the paper and onto the Lego will do to avoid too much excess, but be careful! If you are applying two faces to the same head, either apply both faces at the same time, or seal/cover the first face before applying the second face, because putting tape directly onto the newly-applied face can peel it off again! Learned this the hard way.
    Anyway, thank you again for this wonderful tutorial! I've been having so much fun on my Lego journey.

These faces have that same character but with more expression. And being an avid Adventure Time fan when I was younger, the Pen Ward style faces are an awesome addition. Thank you for making these faces and this application tutorial. It's greatly appreciated and will definitely be put to use by me.

I know there are lots of videos on how to make professional grade animation figures but a lot of us don't have that kind of budget. Well, I say! Crafsman, I've just subscribed a couple of months ago and all I see is the whatever hits every one of my buttons! Animation, material transfer, prop making! You are just making my childhood dreams come true - because I used to think that in order to print on surfaces that are not paper and especially surfaces that are bent in any way you need one of those fancy multi-axis CNC-like special printers that print directly onto your product. Or a 3D printer that prints in layers of coloured foam and stuff. Both of that things cost an arm an a leg to get access to, but all I want is to print things I lie onto light surfaces your way is just the best! Thank you so much -- I'd like you see more animations like this of yours and I'm glad to see a fella dragonframer!)

    • @TheCrafsMan
      @TheCrafsMan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rick, I'm glad my videos are clicking with you! That makes me really happy, man! And know that when I started playing around and figuring out these little transfer things, it was a big deal to me too, because I also thought I needed fancy stuff to do this.
      That said, what I'm showing here isn't even the OPTIMUM way of doing it. You can get even better results with different transfer mediums, for example. In the past, I've shown acrylic poly finish (water based polyurethane wood finish) for transfer. But when I show that, it has lead to many questions about which brand, where to find it, lack of availability in some countries, etc. SO I stuck with simple Liquitex Gel Medium, available in most hobby/art stores and on Amazon. And as you can see, I just sorta globbed it on. WAY cleaner results can be had, so I encourage you to give it a shot! :D
      Also, I'm excited to show a video about DragonFrame and stop-motion in general. SO much fun, man. :)

    +1 for the stop motion animation. I remember in video class (voluntary, and I forgot the real name of the course) one semester we had to write a short 10 minute script and create and accompanying short film and I was heavily into sculpture at the time end my partner and I decided to do a stop motion. Twice the work but the payoff was awesome. We learned a lot had a fun time despite it being very frustrating at times. And this was back when TH-cam wasn't super prominent in my area yet so we had to figure things out thru trial and error. I think I still have the old raw/edited footage somewhere. Had a house fire years ago so I'm not positive, but one of the things to survive was a box of old "art" projects from school.

    Dang, Crafsman, you make stop-motion look so easy! And I know you've mentioned Pen in the past, but wowza, what a man to have in your corner to root you on! Very cool you did some faces more in his style, but also really fun to watch you work as always. Keep on keepin on!
