I was heartbroken when her character died in the second Downton Abbey movie and now, I am REALLY heartbroken. It is like a gigantic oak tree you loved is suddenly removed from a familiar landscape.
Penelope Wilton is an amazing actress - so understated and affable, yet so much generosity and emotion in her performances. And she seems a wonderful person in real life too, from interviews but more importantly, what others say about her… She and Maggie Smith played off each other beautifully…
Her greatness lay in her subtly and her understanding of the nuance. She could also deliver power, anger, and comedy in the same doses... Im truly gutted... You will sooooo be missed... RIP... dear Dame Maggie Smith.. 💔💔💔
Dame Maggie the magnificent. To state she was a briliant actress is an understatement. Thank you Graeme O'Neil for a wonderful compilation from those who knew her and worked with her.
The writers of Downton gave Maggie some fantastically funny lines, and Maggie delivered them with beautiful wit and charm. I loved her facial expressions when she was delivering her withering comments! Hilarious! Rest in peace Maggie.
Her greatest achievment is that she was and still is loved by so many people from different generations. Some saw her as Miss Jean Brodie. Others grew up with her as Minerva McGonagall. And they all love her because she was brilliant in every role.
I had not heard of Dame Maggie Smith’s passing. What a beautiful person and incredible artist and force to be reckoned with on screen. She was fantastic in everything she was ever in because she was the epitome of a true actor who didn’t settle for less than. You’ve given us a plethora of emotions throughout the years, but your passing is only sadness. For your family, friends and millions of fans. Rest well, Maggie. Thank you for everything. A true master of the craft for well over half of a century. ❤️🩹✝️🎭🏆🎬
She was mentally and physically able until her last breath.. this is much more important than whether or not she aged "gracefully/beautifully" and with or without cosmetic surgery
@@xyincognitoYes, that is of course true but her lack of pretension and artifice especially in the most superficial of professions and her grace and dignity was surely a matter of choice in how she lived and aged.
She made the show. I absolutely love Downton Abbey and I have watched the entire series over and over and I always look forward to Maggie's lines. She really did make me laugh and then cry at the same time. I will miss her.
What a formidable and beautiful talent Dame Maggie was, she will be forever missed and shall always be in our hearts. One of the nations greats, gone yes, but will never be forgotten. RIP Dame Maggie, may your long deserved rest be a journey as significant and as stunning, as the one you embarked upon, here on earth. I hope at the next NTA's, the lifetime achievement award, is duly granted to you and your memory. Fly high darling ❤
I very much enjoyed this video. Well done for mixing the tributes with the clips of the show. And lovely to see that interview with Penelope and Maggie - it must be difficult both to give an accept such praise but how marvelous that she was able to tell it to her in person.
She was a great actress and her legacy of so many roles on stage and movie and tv show it. My favorite movie with her is Tea With Mussolini and that ensemble cast, also a later one, The Lady in the Van is remarkable. She was intrepid, formidable, extremely intelligent and had the most remarkable timing.
The day she passed I watched "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" I loved the accent in that where she kept talking about "my gerrols" (my girls) Such a wonderful actress!!
There are no words to truly describe her brilliance. Downton Abbey was her crowning role, and I've seen her in so many performances. This role shows every facet of her abilities.
I watched time in time yesterday. I love downtown abby. I convinced my sister to watch it. Thats been since it started on TV. I think it was channel 3 on Sundays. I missed episodes but I Was happy it is on prime to watch it. Thank you cast for a great show
Such a sad day when we heard of her passing. It sometimes seems that we are in a time when the greats of the theatre tradition in the United Kingdom are being taken from us too quickly, those whose career started on the stage and who never expected to become international film or television stars. Dame Edith Evans, Sir Laurence Olivier, Sir John Gielgud, Sir Ralph Richardson were all of a slightly older generation. Recently we have lost Sir Michael Gambon, the wonderful Tom Wilkinson and Alan Rickman of the gorgeously expressive dark voice. Dame Judi Dench, Dame Helen Mirren, Dame Julie Andrews, Dame Penelope Wilton, Dame Patricia Routledge, Vanessa Redgrave, Sir Ian McKellen (whom I saw play Richard II and Edward II at the Edinburgh Festival in my far off youth), Sir Anthony Hopkins, Sir Derek Jacobi, Tom Courtenay amongst others are all in or very close to their 80s - in one case in their 90s. Will future generations ever have an opportunity of seeing a similar galaxy of talent on the British stages?
My eyes water every time I see one of these videos. Even though she has left us with many great characters, my two favorites are Professor McGonagall and The Dowager Countess. RIP
Maggie inhabited every role she played. She found so many new young fans as Professor McGonagall. My hope is that they have watched her any many things since. She will be so missed.
Rip Maggie. You bridged the gap of young and old. Most children will remember you, as Minerva and adults also as the dowager. But I also remember the prime of Miss Jean Brodie. A star has gone out tonight. ❤
“Desmonia”? That’s Desdemona, the female lead in Shakespeare’s Othello. Smith’s film performance of that role in the 1960s resulted in an Academy Award nomination, and the film holds the record for the most nominations for a movie version of a Shakespeare play. I can only imagine what Dame Maggie would say about that mispronunciation of one of Shakespeare’s most well-known female characters.
This guy needs to slow down a fraction and think about what he's saying. Or at least do a retake if he flubs it. I don't say it to be unkind, just to be real.
@@difrancophile Agreed. I don't get it - if you're going to be speaking on camera as a profession, that the person doesn't understand that they need to speak in a way that we can hear clearly so we don't struggle to understand what's being said. My 2 cents...
Brilliant performance,as always, in Downton, as Violet Crawley the Dowager Countess of Grantham, but my first,& favourite encounter with the fine actor Maggie Smith is when she portrayed Miss Jean Brodie ,in the 1969 movie adaptation of Muriel Spark's ,'The Prime of Miss Jean Bodie'. Maggie Smith, as always, embodied the character of Jean Brodie 2nd to none!
“Downton Abbey” fans who haven’t seen its precursor film, “Gosford Park,” also written by Julian Fellowes, and directed by Robert Altman, must do so. A send-up of British murder mysteries set in the 1930s, Smith’s performance as Constance, Countess of Trentham (get it: Trentham -> Grantham?) was Oscar-nominated, and is well known to have evolved into Lady Violet. As usual, Dame Maggie steals every scene she’s in, although the whole star-studded film is delightful. The costume designer deservedly won an Oscar. One of my all-time favorites, I curl up and indulge myself in a viewing about once a year.
I agree. Please spare a thought for those who are deaf/very hard of hearing. We rely on clear speech to cope with hearing aids. The Closed Captions produce some really weird translations of your presentation! Don't forget, those who are deaf are not necessarily blind and dumb as well!
My favourite line " Mrs Crawley "How you hate to be wrong"
Lady Grantham "I wouldn't know, I'm not familiar with the sensation"
😂😂
If Maggie Smith was in a scene... i waited with baited breath for her to give one of her one-liners.
She was perfection!!
I was heartbroken when her character died in the second Downton Abbey movie and now, I am REALLY heartbroken. It is like a gigantic oak tree you loved is suddenly removed from a familiar landscape.
I'm glad you included the interview with Maggie Smith and Penelope Wilton.
I loved the show, but I REALLY loved when these two great actresses did scenes together. They played off each other so perfectly. RIP, Maggie!
Penelope Wilton is an amazing actress - so understated and affable, yet so much generosity and emotion in her performances. And she seems a wonderful person in real life too, from interviews but more importantly, what others say about her… She and Maggie Smith played off each other beautifully…

Absolutely great lady!! Loved watching her !!❤😢
I like that Maggie heard those lovely sentiments from Penelope.
Harriot Jones, Prime Minister.
I loved the line, "What is a weekend?"
Maggie was a gem in....

As a fan since Miss Jean Brodie, this was wonderful, and I thank you so much for doing this.

The absolute SHADE Dame Maggie could throw with just a lift of her eyebrow is an art form.
3:50 "I've hated it for half a century." Ever since I turned 50 a couple years ago I now express time in fractions of a century because of this line.

To me the best line she had in Downton Abbey was, "What's a weekend?"
Oh dear heaven! That is MY favourite line! The best ever! And the way she delivers it … !
I can't pick only one as she delivered many hilarious lines. Downton Abbey won't be the same without her. The world lost one of their best 🥺
I have that on a mug for Christmas 2 years ago!
And she passed on a Friday, so it's most appropriate.
