  • You might think that if you buy an older or cheap Mercedes Benz that you'll be able to afford living the luxury car lifestyle without having the money you normally need with these cars. Sadly, I'm going to tell you the 10 worst Mercedes Benz issues and biggest Mercedes problems you'll run into with these used cars.
Some of these will raise your maintenance costs or your Mercedes ownership costs with your used Mercedes car.

I owned a 04 W203 Kompressor with 6sp stick and most of my issues were indeed front suspension related, replaced thrust arms, lower control arms, tie rods and links several times over. Had the car for 17 years and was as rust free as it was new and I live in Toronto where they use salt like it is free. As i did most of the work on the car, never ever had an issue with a rusted or seized bolt, where as every Japanese car I've worked on, after 5 years every bolt snaps off. The car was generally quite trouble-free that I bought another C class W205 Wagon 2020

If only the mechanic got even a hint of that hourly cost, most is pocketed by the Stealership. Mechanics are poorly paid in general considering the knowledge and technical nature of the cars, not to mention they have to supply their own tools. Only the senior ones are approaching $30-$35/hr

Re: Rust, to be fair the first 2 cars you showed was a W210 and a W202 all of which are over 20 years for the newest ones and approaching 30 years for the oldest ones. Considering the C-class that you highlighted was a C220 1993-96 that is not a lot of rust for a 28 year old car living in Edmonton, every other car from that period would have rusted into dust like Mazda, Toyoto, Ford etc. The first gen ML was garbage and was the first MB to be made in the US and suffered from a lot of problems. Since 2003 all MB were made from galvanized steel and some of the most recent ones (C-class 2014+) are mainly all aluminum except for high strength steel for the A post and rear quarter.

Not arguing. My mechanic makes the point that the newer Mercedes break a lot. Scotty K. said that German-made ones are less prone to breaking. I have an older W164 GL450, 160,000 miles. I've replaced the front air shocks, the pump. The front and rear sensors are erratic (I turn them off). Garage kept. Runs pretty well, very comfortable to drive.

The overwhelming majority of what was mentioned in this video applies to all cars and is a result of rubber and plastic pieces being used. Rubber and plastic have a 5 to 7 year lifespan in just about any automotive engineering application regardless of the manufacturer. Most people do not care about these pieces and just replace cars when they start to knock or things start cracking. Bushings, airbags, variety of sensors, spark plugs, etc. And as to the statement regarding spark plugs in Hondas lasting the life of the car, please provide written proof from Honda that their spark plugs will last those 200,000 or 300,000 miles. I have to call out BS on that one. Even iridium spark plugs should be changed every 100,000 miles or so.

I’ve had a brand new C250 2012 and a brand new A45 2016 model. Tyre wear was ridiculous,on the A45 I’ve changed 3 sets of new tyres $450 Aud per tyre in 24000 km’s. The car went few times in limp mode while driving in comfort mode. The triangular plastic from the passenger seat got loose started falling off . Distronic plus was working 30% of the time, the air vents were rattling. Also the driver’s seat adjustment controller went inside the door panel twice,so I had to take it to MB dealership and the 2nd time they’ve scratched the door and kept denying it. When hot the brakes were making squeaking noise. The C250 was pulling to the left a lot. Took it to MB dealership and after 2-3 wheel alignments they’ve said to me it’s ok even though it was not ok. Also the brakes were let’s just say,not up to standard. I would never buy another Benz again.

You're absolutely correct about poor construction on Mercs such as the ML and C class of late 1990s to 2000s. There seem to be fewer and fewer on the roads. Our family owned several new ones and they are rubbish. My sister has a W204 which has several oil leak problems which were unheard of in very early Mercs such as W114, 123, 124.

Many years ago I asked a guy in a parking lot, over the fence to a Mercedes dealership, what an oil change on a Mercedes cost (he worked in the showroom). "A hundred bucks", he said. When you buy a luxury car, to some extent you "buy into the neighborhood". I'm not an expert at all, probably know less than most about cars, but it seems to me that today's "cheap" cars have plenty of luxury and safety. My "big thing", for me to even consider a car, is that cruise control MUST be on the steering wheel. Bentley 2024 put it on a stick ($350,000+). I would never buy one, for that reason alone. Even a hot, HP, muscle, Mustang puts it on the wheel, where it belongs. So does Mercedes.
An "auto" "mobile" is all about moving from one place to another. A cruise control (CC) automatically controls the speed. That is a primary function. A secondary function is a radio, and a tertiary function is a phone. Why put sound and phone on the wheel and displace the primary function? Cart before the horse? Especially on an ultra luxury cruiser like a Bentley. I use CC on freeways, and in the suburbs. I want it under my thumb, just a touch one way or the other, without taking a hand off the wheel. If you have something like a GT 3 (Porsche), you could just omit CC altogether - and they should do that, before relegating it to a stick! Presumably, you didn't buy a GT 3 to "cruise", and you do not want to take your hands off the wheel driving one of those things. That's why they put gear shifters on paddles on the steering wheel.

The car is 10 Years Old, under 10K Miles, always kept in air conditioned & heated garage, and impeccable maintenance. The car is built like vault & handles very well compared to the current C & E Classes. That being said you should buy the extended warranty, keep up maintenance & drive the car. An oil change is $300; An A Service is $800 & B-Service starts at $2K. The car is a joy & am never selling it, at least while I am alive. I recently saw an MB AMG S500 for sale for pretty cheap but it was having problems with the air suspension. I think that right there would probably negate the benefits of getting it at such a good price. Beautiful looking car otherwise. And of course the sound of that AMG V8. Great video.

These arent japanese cars, you wont get away with it on 20 year old german luxury cars and it only gets worse the more modern they get...... so theres futureproofing as well to take into account.

well no you are wrong or maybe bmw are special but i know for a fact they are not as the same tools available for MB have BMW versions, I own the MB star diagnostic xentry/DAS full package capable to diagnose and code all mb/maybach and sprinters from 70's to current ... same as the dealer minus some subscription only features , but I only use it to diagnose pre odb2 models because it comes with the right connectors and occasionally look at the DAS for service info and schematics but it's nothing you can't find online these days but that portion of the STAR is useful, what I use and has about 90% of the same capabilities of the STAR system are the icarsoft mb2 $143 very good and even better the launch x431 @ $160 it's amazing faster than MB star system more practical because it's the size of a phone and it let me perform adaptations/initialization and other advanced programming so no the high end star system is not needed but it does come useful to diagnose pre odb2 mercedes which I own , other than that the launch x431 is all it's needed as the only features missing are those that require a subscription only available to dealers like key fob programming and swapping parts that require vin # matching @@TheStaniG
