  • It's time for BMW vs Mercedes Benz when it comes to reliability. The questions we'll answer is whether or not BMW is worth it and whether or not Mercedes is worth it. That's because these luxury cars can depreciate fast or cost you thousands in repairs if they're not reliable.
So is BMW reliable? Are Mercedes reliable? Find out today in our comparison review of these two luxury car brands.

My first German car was a brand new 2001 VW Passat; Made in Germany. I had that car for one year and was in the shop 13 times. Three times for the Mass Airflow Sensor, One time for the radio not working, Two times for the Climatronic failing, One time for the T handle hood release coming off when I tried to open the hood. One time for the headliner coming off (No doubt bad installation after fixing the faulty radio antenna earlier). Two times for the plastic wheel bolt covers cracking and falling off. Two times for the EGR valve failing and the last time was for flickering headlights due to a faulty alternator. People told me that VW aka V-DUD isn't a real German car. Get a Mercedes. I looked around and bought a Mercedes E500. In the first year, I went back to the dealer because the rear windows would not roll down. I only rolled those windows down about two times before they failed. Then, while grocery shopping, I put the gorceries in the trunk and went home. Guess what. The trunk latch is electric and it failed. It failed so bad that the key wouldn't even open it because the electric motor driving the lock failed and there is no override. GREAT GERMAN ENGINEERING! I went to drop the back seats to get the gorceries out but guess what, apparently folding rear seats are optional on a $60k Mercedes but standard on a $15k Corolla an my E500 didn't have the folding seat so I had to pull the groceries through the tiny rear armrest trunk access. German cars? NEVER AGAIN. I've only ever purchased Japanese cars ever since.

Great video as always. Just a general opinion: HOW YOU TREAT ( how responsible you are ) YOUR CAR is more important than how much your car can take. Some cars can be more expensive to maintain than others, but ... does it matter if you are prepared for it? It all depends on whether you really value your car and your investment. I know people who own cars that are known to have not-so-great reliability and have been using them for years and still look brand new and have no issues at all. BUY WHAT YOU LIKE AND BE RESPONSIBLE WITH IT. There is no such thing as a perfect car, there is a perfect one for each type of driver.

Is the reliability conclusion based on the banging on the body panels and fiddling with the various interior pieces? Component fitment is a factor but when I think reliability, I'm more so concerned about the engine's internals, water pump, oil pump and timing system. Everything else is fairly modular to replace.

Given, arguably, a similar comparison, I think that the Benz is a far more attractive car. Beautiful, to all of your points.

Also, I do not count the MBZ C class or the 1 and 2 series BMW's being the real thing. If made in America - particularly Alabama, most are lesser quality from USA production facilities. Mercedes Benz today is not the same company I invested in when I bought stock in the late 70’s. The slide began when Juergen Schrempp became chairman and then the merger (purchase?) of Chrysler. The new company (Mercedes Benz Automobile group) under the new CEO has no interest in producing ICE cars, only Electrics. 😢

I leased a plain 530i (didn’t consider a hybrid for a second) since new, 2018 model. I am pretty amazed by how satisfied I am aboit it, but had my irritations over the years. The rear had a slight camber from the factory, seen from centre tyre wear, there have been issues after some pothole, but I can’t blame BMW for the tiny shudder that comes and goes at higher speeds, an issue that couldn’t be resolved. It looks like new, drives fantastically, but that is keeping in mind I serviced it by the book, at the dealership.
I am a fast driver on the motorway (140 kmph in Sweden, and have done several road trips through Germany to Belgium, France, Italy, where I drove the full 200-250kmph. Preferably 210 😀(I’m mainly a nighttime driver).
Changing soon for a new 440i, hapoy to get the double of my rest value now, after 5 years and 140k km.
I can’t complain, but I spent good cash on maintenance for sure.

I am the proud owner of a BMW 430i Gran Coupe LCI, which I acquired here in Switzerland. Notably, my model lacks a particulate filter (OPF) and had 92,000 kilometers on the odometer at the time of purchase. Just a year later, it's already approaching 138,000 kilometers. This vehicle has thoroughly impressed me with its delightful blend of exhilarating performance and comfort. It's been subjected to extensive use, standing up remarkably well under the demand.
After reaching 100,000 kilometers, I opted for a Stage 1 upgrade, adding burble and XHP. The car has been performing flawlessly since. I'm meticulous about maintenance, ensuring an oil change every 15,000 kilometers using only the highest quality oil and fueling exclusively with Shell V-Power.
This BMW 430i Gran Coupe LCI is, in my experience, the best all-rounder I've ever had the pleasure of owning. It underlines my belief that a vehicle's reliability is primarily a reflection of one's commitment to its maintenance and care.

The thing I've learnt with BMW is that it's the cheapest to fix and probably the most reliable as an overall brand than Mercedes and Audi and most other European brands. Even BMW's worst engines like the n20, n47 are far better than the Renault engines in low trim Mercedes. I have an 3 series N47 with 150k miles and it's better than my family members 2 low mileage B classes which kept having problems. I have a 2000 325ci with 150k and it's far better. As for Audi, My Dad's A3 cost £800 for an egr valve, my BMW was £60 labour plus my part for the same or I could do it myself. That audi repair cost would get me a new timing chain on my n47. The engine compartments are must larger on BMW compared to Audi so they're easier to work on

Yeah, BMW paid for it under warranty but you had to take it in, get another car (free), wait for the parts, and then the repairs. So, you were inconvenienced by all of this car servicing. Now, I had a 2014 ML350 BlueTEC diesel, loved it until Mercedes agreed via court rulings to fix the emissions problem without a recall. Many problems after that (in the last two years) and about $5,500 out-of-pocket for repairs and maintenance. Traded it in in April and got a Lexus ES300h, Ultra Luxury and am happy as a lark!

As a German with experience on both brands all I can say: Benzes and BMW's have reliable engines for years as long as you know what to get and to get befriended with diesel engines. The OM651 (4 cylinder 170 hp, 400nm torque) is if maintenanced properly: unkillable. BMW also has equivalents to that engine as the B47 190hp 400nm which also tends to be very reliable. Only AGR seems to be a problem at 250.000km and unluckily some of them can have pre worn timing chain guides etc. But thats nothing new even the OM651 can have similar issues.
If you want 6 cylinder engines it tends to be more intelligent to go for BMW's N57s or B57s. Those tend to be very reliable and tend to be way more efficient and cost effective compared to OM642. Don't get me wrong the OM642 or any other 6 cylinder Benz Diesel Engine can be very reliable but if something breaks or goes wrong: it will be XPENSIF.

I believe that your car’s reliability is mostly influenced by how you drive and maintain your car. YOU basically are the one who will determine its RELIABILITY.

It is most definitely a factor! How you drive and how you maintain it, matters large.

Just so everyone knows. The wood trim in the BMW is actually real wood, with epoxy finish.

A couple of years is still a new car. 10 to 15 even 25 years down the road is where the reliability really shows. To me CR can say BMW is upping there game but on a 2 year term is not proving it to me. Since as you know and I know that plastic is great till the warranty runs out, the shazam $. BMW = Big Money Wallet.

A bunch of young punks here that lease their BMWs, every two years get a Boner owning them. You will never get the longevity of an S class Mercedes or a top-of-the-line Lexus.

Do some research you're very naive about BMW reliability in say the last 10 years buddy! 2 years lmao!!!

@@germanengineering204 the word is out my friend BMW uses too much plastics under the hood where the parts that are plastic are in an extremely hot environment and because of this the car is turned to garbage.

@@germanengineering204 they have improved, but because of BMWs past, they will continue to lose customers! Just like Detroit. I had an X5 I had nothing but problems. Once you get burned by a car company, it is very difficult to go back. I had a Tesla model, three long range and now my daughter is driving it I will always buy another Tesla. I have driven over 1,000,000 miles. In almost every type of high quality car! For years, I kept going back to Mercedes Benz because I’ve had the least problems with them

Hi. Recently got my d.license in Germany. I want to buy a 2nd hand car. My options are MB c180 2012 and bmw 118 2012.
Two of my friends willing to sell their cars to me at less than 120km on both cars.
Any advice from car masters 😁

I just bought a 2014 CLA 250 with 105k miles on it, hoping I can get at least 170k out of it with out too many issues. Seems to be a pretty reliable car from what I've seen online, haven't had it long.
