  • In this video I go over everything you need to know to get started in resin 3d printing. I cover the technology, picking out a printer, picking our resin, safety, slicing, printing, and cleaning.
Thanks to all my subscribers for your support. Commenting on the videos is one of the best things you can do to help grow my channel. So thanks again for all your support.
This video does show products and affiliate links are below. That means I get a small comission if you buy using one of those links. But these tiny comissions do help keep this channel going. So please use them and share them. Thanks!
This video was sponsored by Nova3D and they provided the Elphin 2 printer shown in this video.
    The printer is here: amzn.to/2PRfj1E
HOWEVER that printer doesn't seem to be available any longer. I'd look at this one instead: amzn.to/309s7pJ
This video is also sponsored by Yousu, and they provided the resin.
You can buy the resin here: amzn.to/2PQspfz
Other affiliate links to get all the stuff you see in the video. Using these links helps support my channel. So it really helps me if you use these links when sharing these items also.
This is that amazing deal on the plastic sheeting. Notice that all the other roll sizes are more like $20-$30. But this one is only $5: amzn.to/3dxTT1M
    Plastic Food Trays - 12 count of 12x16: amzn.to/2OnNMVe
(There are some 10x14 ones that are cheaper. But the bigger ones are better for 3d printing)
The rubber mats as seen in the resin handling video- amzn.to/3pmhfws
(I normally use both and put the rubber mats on the food trays)
    Metal Funnels - amzn.to/39ZU56y
    IPA - amzn.to/2T0uFzS
    Spray Bottles - amzn.to/2T2q7t2
    Nitrile Gloves - amzn.to/2Tm6T0c
    My Mask - amzn.to/3cgvWL5
    UV Lamp - amzn.to/3fMfDts
And this is the other resin I use, Siraya Tech: amzn.to/3kln4qe
Here is my favorite Atari Hat: amzn.to/3mhoW5Z
Here is the hat I'm wearing in this video: amzn.to/3fLdHkT
These are not the exact ones from the video but look pretty good:
    Metal Scraper: amzn.to/3fIenYq
    Safety Glasses: amzn.to/39HbZ08
I also want to thank Formlabs for being gracious and allowing me to use some of their footage for this video. For more information about Formlabs printers go here: formlabs.com/3d-printers/form-3/

Hi. Thanks for all the views and wonderful comments.
I wanted to address the UV Lamp and the fact that I wasn't wearing gloves while post curing. You can't see it in the shot, but I was wearing my UV Protective eyewear. The ones shown earlier in the video. You should not look at artificial 405nm UV Light without protective eyewear. It can damage your eyes. Sorry that I didn't mention this in the video.
As far as UV Light and skin. I've had several comments that I shouldn't be exposing my skin to the UV light either. Including a comment from a close friend. As you can tell, I am very pale and am sensitive to sunlight. However the UV lamp in the video is similar to that used in a nail salon. It is narrow band 405nm. Research has shown that exposure to this type of artificial UV light does not increase the risk of skin cancer. See link below. It's safer than the same amount of exposure to direct sunlight. Therefore I haven't worried much about it. I could have just as easily taken the part outside and sun cured it for a few minutes. I prefer to post cure more slowly and instead use the UV lamp, which is less powerful than the sun.
Still, better to be safe than sorry. Therefore I do recommend that you wear gloves and avoid prolonged skin exposure to the UV light.

Question...Have you tried reusing the printed leftover resin, i mean, melting it to make it liquid form again, to be reused, thus, cutting cost, have you tried it and has it worked ?

    • @Desca2001
      @Desca2001 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

@@kingtigertank72 That is not how Resin works, you cannot remelt it like you can with FDM prints using thermoplastics (like PLA), because it not a melted polymer in the first place. Resin is made from Monomers and a UV-active component. When it gets in contact with UV-Light, a Polymerization reaction starts, creating long chains (polymers) out of a lot of the monomers. This process is no reversable by heat.
But usually the amount of resin you "waste" (for support structures and maybe failed prints) is quite low, and all of the still liquid resin in the vat is perfectly usable.
If you want more detailed information, check out the video "Ph.D. Chemist Explains 3D Printer Resin"

This is the best video I've seen so far. I was skeptical about getting a resin printer because I was under the impression that if one drop of resin got on your skin, you would drop dead instantly! 👻 The stove reference, which I use several times a day, changed my mind.😁 I started thinking about other things I use that can be dangerous, like my table saw, my car, etc. I think I'll give resin printing a try after all.

    • @chrisnunez4758
      @chrisnunez4758 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Don't be fooled. Getting resin carelessly on you can cause you to have incredibly intense allergic reactions. Check reddit for those that have failed to follow proper safety precautions with pictures of visible skin damage. Over time, even a microscopic drop of resin can still cause those reactions. Resin is not to be messed with.

Someone else has probably pointed this out but you need a mask or a well ventilated area basically all the time when working with uncursed resin, prolonged exposure to resin fumes can lead to some nasty health complications down the line. Get a respirator rated for hazardous material and wear it religiously, your lungs will thank you later! Resin isnt incredibly dangerous, but the safety protocols involved are super important, just like they are with most tools of this nature.

I have an Elegoo Saturn 2 sitting on my dining room table at this moment, still sealed in its original box. I have been using an Ender 3 FDM printer for years and love it but decided to take the leap to resin with the Saturn 2. As one might expect, I have been watching a number of 3d resin printer videos and have found this video to be the best by far. I really like your straightforward, honest and direct approach to explaining the finer details of resin printing and the fact that you do so without relying on that overly-hyped and forced "toxic positivity" that makes me cringe and immediately shut the videos off just makes for a perfect presentation. Thank you for not being a schlock jock and actually offering useful information.
I do have a question that I had not previously considered. As someone who wants to conserve resin, should I consider getting a smaller printer for smaller prints and save the Saturn 2 for larger projects? Amazon has the Mars 3 Pro for $299 now, is that a good price?

An additional useful item to use is puppy training pads (aka wee wee pads) they are an absorbant layer on top of a plastic backing. Its great for managing spills. Put them underneath where your working or printer. If there is any spill just pick up the whole thing and toss. So much easier than trying to wipe things up with paper towels.

Thanks for the very clear instructions. I myself am doing FDA 3D printing for a reasonable time already (started out wit a acrylic monster a few years ago, but using a Creality Ender 5 with improvements now). I was thinking into diving into resin printing for a while now. As I also do Holography I brew my developer and blech baths, and so I am no stranger to using chemicals. I think I can handle this resin stuff too.
As I do not have a separate room or garage box, I was thinking about building a closet with ventilation that sucks air out and use a tube to blow it outside the window. That way I avoid having harmful fumes inside the house. Secondly - I think about using water washable resin (Elegoo, Wanahoo and other brands), and so I can avoid using a lot of (expensive and flammable) alcohol.
Anyway - Thanks for this video. It makes trying out raising printing even more tempting.

I gotta drop a thank you, this video as well as your vid on failures not only got me into 3D printing, I making some really cool stuff, and learning a few tricks too. This vid is great, the printer I ended up getting was the Anycubic Photon Mono 4K and it makes some real nice quality prints. Made a few minis, and 1/10 scale figures so far. Going to work on some bigger stuff soon! Thanks and keep the content coming!
