  • Two very different performance cars with very similar mods, one weather-affected race track. Driving the FA24-equipped new BRZ was such a joy, immediately followed by the Veloster N which was charming in its own way. A pair of wonderful sports cars, and I'd like them both in my garage very much.

    Interesting comparo! The BRZ looked too soft, under-damped and bouncy, with some refinement there it sure looks like it'll run well below the 2-minute mark at CW13. Always enjoy seeing some proper Ding Flingage. Miss you guys...come up to TMP for a visit this summer! TH-camr lapping day at TMP is scheduled for Sept 17th, I think it is.

    • @harrybuhse8622
      @harrybuhse8622 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Even with the new engine the brz doesn't accelerate faster. I think you'll find he was able to corner better, which allowed him to have better exit speed and therefore didn't lose much time on the straights. After all, there's a 200kg+ difference between the cars and 245 width tyres really allows the brz to get the most out of its performance.

      The Elantra N is even quicker with the updated turbo and suspension/chassis. pushing type r numbers and winning on certain tracks. The aftermarket isn't a safe bet yet for the Korean side of things.

      @jamesjefferson6518 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In my opinion, fwd would be the easier platform to push as with the brz you would be managing oversteer and depending more on momentum based speed with the natural aspiration. You could be right as I've never driven either tho

    • @psewgobind
      @psewgobind 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamesjefferson6518 My current front drive gets tracked at TMP (base 10th Gen Civic with K20C2 engine and 6MT). It's a 2700lb feather weight with real old-school vtec after 5800rpm and it's super easy to manage oversteer in this car. However, I'm not worried about adjusting to oversteer woes for GR86 since it's so intuitive. Since GR86 is known to me but BRZ isn't, I'm happy to go that route (unless i can get a test spin in BRZ).

      Veloster N is a hoot but it's more targeted for hardcore enthusiasts. It's also ready to take heavy abuse on the track straight from the factory.
      Just like with most Japanese cars they're usually tuner cars. You'll have to probably dump a grand or two on any of the twins to even be able to hang with any of the N models with back to back laps.

    • @JackieDing86
      @JackieDing86  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That depends on your definition of fun to drive. Do you prefer a stable cornering car or an oversteering car that requires more finesse, I think that’s what you have to ask yourself. Me, likely happy to take the GR86/BRZ.

  • @deejayimm
    @deejayimm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Veloster N was I think 4 seconds faster on Lightning lap.
    You can't get an accurate comparison of anything once they're modified.
    That's why a resource like Car and Driver lightning lap is so helpful, because it reduces as many variables as is humanly possible to get a decent comparison.

    • @JackieDing86
      @JackieDing86  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes but then again, how many track enthusiasts actually tracks the car 100% stock? Who wouldn’t add a little bit of camber, a set of slightly grippier tires, and some more track-oriented brake pads?
      Lightning Laps is great but it just tells how good the car is out the box, not how great the car’s potential could be.

    • @deejayimm
      @deejayimm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JackieDing86 I know, but that's why if your goal is to get an honest comparison, the vehicles must be stock.
      The difference in tires alone can totally sway the results.
      Not to mention all the other variables.
      You just cannot compare two vehicles that have been modded and expect the results to mean anything.

    • @ciello___8307
      @ciello___8307 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can also say that cars will be suited to one track more than the other. Some tracks have longer /shorter straights, more tighter corners, etc which can make one car faster on on circuit or slower on another

    • @deejayimm
      @deejayimm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ciello___8307 well yeah but the only logical way to compare them all is to use one track. Besides, that's not going to matter much when the two cars are similar in performance.

    • @Jez4prez1
      @Jez4prez1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@deejayimm nah, even stock cars have differences in tires. I agree with Jackie. Stock vs Stock is still oranges to apples comparison, unless all you ever intend to do is keep the car 100% stock, even keep tires stock. Then all you're ever comparing is your stock car to other stock cars. But if you're comparing 2 cars on a track, then keeping stock is pointless. No one drives stock cars on track. People into tracking cars are def more interested in track potential.
      Point of this video or videos like this is to just see potential, for owners to generate ideas, to say oh those tires worked well, or those brakes are good. Maybe I can try that. Things like that.
      No comparison is going to be equal. Whether stock vs stock, or modded vs modded. It only becomes close to equal on professional race setting (where there are regulations etc). But even then it's not 'exact' but the closest you'll get.
