Wow!! Talk about blast from the past!! I'm 38 years old now and back in 1989, I was a 10 year old Nintendo video game nerd who lived for video games!! But what's great about that is its stood the test of time and is still considered one of the greatest video games ever created. It is a fun game!! While it was released in the US in 1990, SMB3 had released in Japan in 1988, a year before this movie came out. So it's possible that during Jimmy's "training" they played some Famicom games.
I watched this movie in the theatre when I was 10, and at the time Mario 3 hadn’t come out yet. Was amazing to see footage of the new game. I remember this movie being amazing for all the video games, especially the Power Glove Rad Racer game lol
I was 9 when this came out...it hit theaters before Mario 3 came out, and it was insane to see this before the game release. Gaming and life was more pure back then. Such nostalgia. Extra are the kids in the background holding their arms up, probably because of multiple takes. Lol
Just watched this in my 40’s. I remember watching it as a kid. I loved playing games especially Marion brothers. Heck I even bought the mini Nintendo just not too long ago. Good times!
I'm glad the video game in the final game tournament is Super Mario Bros. 3. That's really cute. Also: "That the magic flute!" No, it's the Warp Whistle.
I remember when this came out in theaters, i was 8 in 1989. We had already played Super Mario Bros 1 and 2, and seeing that 3 at the end was just amazing. Simply amazing. We couldn't believe what we were going to get soon (as the movie came out before the game was released). Gaming was way different back then. Since there was much less competition and Nintendo was basically the ONLY thing that existed (or even mattered), it was like God Himself bringing a gift to the whole of society all at once. That may sound pretty far-fetched when put that way but i cant think of a better comparison. People bitch now about this game being a shameless Nintendo ad, but we simply didn't care. We DID NOT CARE. It's still a very well directed and entertaining and hysterical film. You just really had to be there.
SergeTheBlerge I agree. I didn’t see the movie when it came out, but I definitely remember the impact of SMB 3 being at the end. I remember seeing a preview of the movie and THAT got me hyped for the game. So I can just imagine the feeling if I was seeing this final scene in the movie theater for the first time back then. It’s hard to explain that feeling to a person who wasn’t living during that time, or weren’t that concerned about video games. You have to understand the CONTEXT of why this movie scene is so special
man I remember seeing this in the theater lol. I was so excited when I found out there was a SMB 3. I also remember this part of the movie was kept under wraps because there were promoting a game but you had to see the movie to know what the new game was.
Yup! Way before youtube and any kinda leaks or spoilers. I think I seen an ad in Nintendo Power magazine for this movie. I still was excited to see SMB3 for the first time
@Bad Miles 0827 In Japan it was released in 1988, but for many American kids, this is the first time they ever saw the game as it wasn't released in North America until 1990.
If that guy would have announced anything else then I would have said it was over the top. However Super Mario 3 is a masterpiece that deserved that sort of excitement.
This scene still gives me goosebumps this is pure ASMR I remember when I went to go watch it with my father in the theaters when this scene popped up he whispered in my ear as soon as this game hits the stores we're getting it.... now that he's passed on it's a beautiful memory that I get to share with my kids, we own it on Blu-ray and on DVD but it's always a treat whenever we pop this Tape in the VCR.
FYI: SMB3 was released a full 14 months before this movie in Japan. Just think: if you knew someone in Japan who'd mail it to you at that point, you'd have been the coolest kid in school!!!!!!
I was 9 years old and cried during this movie. I remember writing a letter to Santa that I only wanted Super Mario Bros. 3 and for him to deliver the game in February on release day. Santa didn't come that Christmas but I was the first kid in my class to get SMB3.
@@jeremyriley1238 that’s basically what it was lol but it was enjoyable, and there’s just something special about 90s films, even if they were cheesy/bad.

They spent a lot of time, and dad's credit card money, on calling the Nintendo hotline and reading through gaming magazines, so it's very possible he knew from there. But also, more importantly, a lot of us gamers simply have certain instincts, and when you see something like where the first whistle is found, that castle wall coming down, you might instinctively think "Why's it like that? Is it for me to fly over?" and having played Super Mario Bros. 1 the first warp pipes kind of do the same thing.
I remember seeing a trailer and I was so hyped for this. It would have had such an impact if they never show Super Mario Brothers 3 in the trailer. The game wasn't even out for America. It was out in Japan and we were able just to see pictures but no gameplay.
As if I tortured my parents by making them bring me to see this in cinemas. FYI when everyone saw this back in the day no one had any idea they would be playing super mario 3 THE theater exploded !!!!
My local news station held a contest to be one of the first people to own Super Mario 3. All you had to do was stop by the news station and put in your name and phone number and they would display some names on the screen during the Nightly News. The first person to call in won the game for Nintendo and also two tickets to Universal Studios and free entry into the video game tournament that they have there which promoted this movie. So what I did was I called the new station and then hung up so we would be programmed into redial on my touch tone phone. My name popped up on the screen and all I did was hit read out and I actually won. It was the best time of my nine-year-old life
Did you guys realizes that Jimmy was the FIRST dude[Although fictionally] to ever discover A FUCKING SECRET at Super Mario Brothers 3, which wasn't EVEN released at this time? LOL

Dude, as a kid seeing super Mario brothers 3 ( hadn't been released everywhere yet, ESPECIALLY in my hometown) was like finding the holy grail. Got me so hyped!!!
As a little kid I loved this movie so much. I didn't have an NES so I just gathered as much knowledge of the games as possible. I had Nintendo Power issues just to look at levels and art and read about what the game was. Old Nintendo Power was almost an adventure magazine as much a game magazine. And then this came out. My only complaint at the time was that there wasn't enough video game footage in it.
I was in the 5th grade when this came out. It was supposed to be a big secret until it showed up on a movie in the summer of 1989 starring Fred Savage from Wonder Years 😅😅😅 😅
The beat at 3:30 is Deadly good!! Only the 80's can do this!!! Greatest come back in video history!! Jimmy woods is a Juggernaut!! Love this movie 🎥 so much that My soul is still stuck in the 80's !!
A cult classic of a movie; but for what it was worth, it was essentially a theatrical advertisement for Nintendo; decades before they began to show legitimate advertisements before your film presentation. Had an insane crush on Jenny Lewis; so it's all good in the end.
I was far from being born when all this commotion took place. Yet, it's still interesting to visit a golden past that could've been lost if wasn't for the internet magic.
IF SMB and SMB2 was any indication of what SMB3 would be like....anyone who has played the series would know where to look..... You ever notice on Survivor that they always find the immunity idols? How they know?????? Studying the past helps prepare for the future!
To watch Mario 3 after so much hype to see the first intro was truly magical for a 9 year old I’m crying with goosebumps cus the feeling is so intense u had to experience it
I saw this movie when it was in theaters and the only comparison to audience hype was the first episode of Star Wars. Nothing makes sense and it doesn’t have to. Best 1.5 hour Nintendo commercial ever.
I am so sick of everyone saying this was a Nintendo ad for 90 minutes. Yes Nintendo games are all over the place in the film, but double dragon doesn't even show up until half-hour into the movie. To me this movie was about child neglect, ptsd, autism, the problems and ramifications of divorce when it comes to the children, the bonds of family and finally learning how to say goodbye to a loved one who's died. To me this movie is incredibly underrated all because people say "it was just a commercial for Nintendo and Universal Studios" while ignoring the plot and characters motivations. I mean for god sakes Hailey wants to help them so she can get $25,000 so she can help her father buy a home so they don't have to live in a trailer for the rest of their lives. You don't hear anyone talking about that plot point all you hear is "That's the intro to double dragon not game play you idiots". Wow that rant went longer then I intended. Point is, I love this movie and I'll never understand the hate it gets.

Hell, I got all the Mario games 1-3 downloaded on my android device. To me its a must have video game wise!!
Close enough im 37 in 89 I was 6
4:00 who the hell would know to do that back then?!
lol true. Maybe he just fluked it lol
I was jussayin they sure knowALOT about a new game!!!!
wiisalute LMAO!!! So true!! They must've made the game. Even though its totally inaccurate it still is one of my favorite childhood movies.
+Brett hallisey no shit!
Lol
good times.
When SMB3 came on the screen.... everyone in the theater lost their minds! Love this movie.
Just watched this in my 40’s. I remember watching it as a kid. I loved playing games especially Marion brothers. Heck I even bought the mini Nintendo just not too long ago.
Good times!
As a kid , this was considered a Oscar worthy movie lmao
Love how Nintendo after all these years is still around, shame that they became famous for hating the fans
It was magical my brother. I still get goosebumps seeing This
You are completely right bro. We DID NOT CARE AT ALL!!!!! This was Super Mario Bros 3!!! Case closed!!!!!!
Bro. They have no idea the hype of this. It was like Jesus Comin
Still get goosebumps watching this part and I’m 43
JIMMY! WATCH THE MUSHROOMS!
J. Kang GET THE STAR, JIMMY!
wiegraf37 When the kid had a Star and Flower in his level box thingy, but somehow it's a good thing he got a star lol.
"It's healthier to keep your nose out of certain things, like princesses and stones."
People dont understand just how hype this was when it came out lol
"the magic flute"
You mean Warp Whistle?
TM8 The game wasn’t released in the United States yet.
gcHK47 how would he know to get the flute?
Green Grudge Because the script demanded him to.
gcHK47 what year in USA and Canada?
Mario Iacolucci February 12, 1990.
man I remember seeing this in the theater lol.
I still was excited to see SMB3 for the first time
This is actually how Super Mario Bros. 3 came out for the first time!
@Bad Miles 0827 In Japan it was released in 1988, but for many American kids, this is the first time they ever saw the game as it wasn't released in North America until 1990.
@@MatthewGross87 It would've come out in the states sooner had it not been for the great NES cartridge shortage of 1988.
What's that
@@kennywohl1061 Have you ever seen the movie called "The Wizard"?
@@jcjjcc yeah I was referring to the shortage thing
Continue to rest peacefully, Yamauchi-San and Iwata-San. Thanks for making Nintendo a HUGE part of my everyday life.
What's funny is that Yamauchi didn't like playing video games! ;D
I have no idea how I missed hearing about this movie when it came out. I was 14 yrs old and obsessed with Super Mario 2 all throughout 1989.
To All Old School Gamers everywhere, This movie's for us,
If that guy would have announced anything else then I would have said it was over the top. However Super Mario 3 is a masterpiece that deserved that sort of excitement.
It’s The same as 1 and 2 you’ve just been suckered in by the film and the advertising
@@coryinthehouse5734no, you are wrong
This scene still gives me goosebumps this is pure ASMR I remember when I went to go watch it with my father in the theaters when this scene popped up he whispered in my ear as soon as this game hits the stores we're getting it.... now that he's passed on it's a beautiful memory that I get to share with my kids, we own it on Blu-ray and on DVD but it's always a treat whenever we pop this Tape in the VCR.
I would rent this at blockbuster video a thousand times, as a child.
FYI: SMB3 was released a full 14 months before this movie in Japan. Just think: if you knew someone in Japan who'd mail it to you at that point, you'd have been the coolest kid in school!!!!!!
You'd also need a Famicom though. Because of the different cartridge format between that and the NES.
I was 9 years old and cried during this movie. I remember writing a letter to Santa that I only wanted Super Mario Bros. 3 and for him to deliver the game in February on release day. Santa didn't come that Christmas but I was the first kid in my class to get SMB3.
This was back before secrets could be found easily. That warp whistle would have taken weeks during that time period.
I like how they made a whole movie just to tell you that Super Mario Bros. 3 was coming.
1989: "Only ten minutes to play Mario 3? What a tease..."
2021: literally everyone speed-runs Mario 3 in less than ten minutes
i finally managed to get a copy on DVD sent from the states! you guys in the usa have the best fims! :-)
I swear, the only other game to nearly reach this level of hype was Halo 3 back in 2007.
When they introduced Mario 3, it blew our minds at the time
Super Mario 3 scene alone overshadowed this movie. I don't think any other kid back then didn't care about anything else!
Well, TBH, people basically have mixed feelings about this film, with some calling it nothing more than a 90-minute Nintendo commercial.
@@jeremyriley1238 that’s basically what it was lol but it was enjoyable, and there’s just something special about 90s films, even if they were cheesy/bad.
This is way better than today's 2021 lifestyle here.
I loved this movie. I miss the late 80's 😌
If he was a REAL prodigy he would of pressed down on the white square so he could run behind the map and get the magic flute that warps you to the end of the game....
My nigga
How does it take you to the end,I only know it as just a regular whistle, in order to go to world 8,you need two of them
@Joe T i know right
What white square?
@1 D.A.R.Y.L - that’s a good movie
I always wanted to figure out how he hacked the atm - so I could do it to my account
I love how this is how SMB3 was announced...
At this point, sega knew. It was over.
Raph K 😂😂
Far from it! NINTENDO actually bought SEGA--lock, stock and barrel.
Not really. Sonic 1 was released 2 years after this movie and pretty much ass raped Nintendo for a few years.
Sega Genesis did help Sega make a comeback, but they never did hit the popularity of Nintendo's classics: Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Donkey Kong.
No it was when snes came out
3:22 "Jimmy, grab the star"
*Jimmy grabs the Fire Flower*
*cheers anyway*
Imagine if this was today and they announced Smash Ultimate.
Thatd be SICK. But do you think they'd keep that game secret until the movie release?
@@BowenEros-gt8gn who knows?
@@BowenEros-gt8gn It could have leaked now sadly
Really the Modern day equivalent would be if somehow GTA 6 was unveiled in a random movie
We'd be screaming like fangirls.
No game in history has been so hyped that a movie was made about said hype, us 80s kids were so geeked seeing this
Good thing he magically knew where that obscure flute was hidden having never played the game
FYI when everyone saw this back in the day no one had any idea they would be playing super mario 3 THE theater exploded !!!!
haha so you so this at the theatre? Lucky you :-)
My local news station held a contest to be one of the first people to own Super Mario 3. It was the best time of my nine-year-old life
This has got to be the best scene in the entire movie! :D
And the dad and the older Brother playing Ninja turtles
Did you guys realizes that Jimmy was the FIRST dude[Although fictionally] to ever discover A FUCKING SECRET at Super Mario Brothers 3, which wasn't EVEN released at this time? LOL
This was our childhood.
Holy crap that had me laughing so hard I had tears literally running down my face. Such good memories, and yet SO horrible. Thanks for uploading that.
I never noticed at 2:17 when it shows the knight guy hit the wall, his points actually went up 18,000 lol
hahaha yeh just saw that too lol
Meat Missile It sure did! lol
My grandmother took me to see this in the theater, I had to of been about 7 yrs old. I remember we took in our own microwave popcorn lol. Oh the memories...
Magic flute?....The warp whistle
Dude, as a kid seeing super Mario brothers 3 ( hadn't been released everywhere yet, ESPECIALLY in my hometown) was like finding the holy grail. Got me so hyped!!!
I remember being so hyped for Super Mario Bros 3 because of this movie!
I love the power glove.. it's so bad.. and I mean BAAAAAD
I was in the 5th grade when this came out. It was supposed to be a big secret until it showed up on a movie in the summer of 1989 starring Fred Savage from Wonder Years 😅😅😅 😅
There will never be a better reveal than this.
The beat at 3:30 is Deadly good!! Only the 80's can do this!!! Greatest come back in video history!! Jimmy woods is a Juggernaut!!
Love this movie 🎥 so much that My soul is still stuck in the 80's !!
Gotta love how everyone else is losing their shit but Jimmy Is the original Ultra Instinct master.
Kudos to the person who made sound and music in this scene exciting and reaching the climax 👍🏽
This movie was an oracle to me as a kid
Despite that the movie came out in ‘89, this has to be the most 90s thing ever. It’s glorious.
Wait...how the kids knew about the warps in the game if this was the first time they saw SMB3??
IF SMB and SMB2 was any indication of what SMB3 would be like....anyone who has played the series would know where to look.....
You ever notice on Survivor that they always find the immunity idols? How they know?????? Studying the past helps prepare for the future!
Gamer instinct.
@efeceoarata
I'm the movie, Corey (Fred Savage) and Co. Had been keeping in contact with The Nintendo Power line! THAT is why they know so much!
This is memories of my childhood in my 41 year old body going on 42 in March. Ah, the memories!
To watch Mario 3 after so much hype to see the first intro was truly magical for a 9 year old I’m crying with goosebumps cus the feeling is so intense u had to experience it
X2
*YOU !
Agree. This young generation today can’t understand how this scene blew our minds.
I saw this movie when it was in theaters and the only comparison to audience hype was the first episode of Star Wars. Nothing makes sense and it doesn’t have to. Best 1.5 hour Nintendo commercial ever.
I've heard this scene of the movie was the first time us Americans heard of SMB3
It was.
first gameplay
Classic! This brings me back to my childhood.
When I saw this for the first time I was 😲😲😲🤯🤯🤯 Super Mario Bro 3, the game wasn't out yet and it blew me away and showed the way to the warpzone, thanks wizard
