Fun Fact: This film was rejected by every major film studio, until a little independent Studio picked it up named New Line Cinema. That is so very interesting. It's like with what happened with the live action Sonic movie; originally, Sonic looked hyper realistic (aka grotesque and unappealing). Then, after Sonic took to social media to voice their grievances, the studio remade Sonic, thought he looks like a cartoon character in the real world, like that guy you quoted, his actions and interactions with the other characters in the movie felt so real that you could actually feel as though he's really there in the room with them. Hope my comment made sense.
They nailed it 100%. They look so life like once you're watching the movie it's amazing how authentic the entire film is. So dark and gritty at times with a pinch of humor. My only major beef is they showed every aspect and personality of each turtle except Donatello. At least once it should have shown at the very least a grungy looking lab or workshop.
He has the bargaining chip, or at least he thinks he does. It's precisely like the cartoon....He's confident until he knows the plan failed, then he acts erratically and fails himself too. That's what most people miss about this "dark" movie. It still carried the heart and humor of the audience it was after my age and younger who's first taste of the turtles was the cartoon and not the comic book. The timeout thing is true too obviously haha.
they can do better. but i doubt they ever will. they found good mix comic and cartoons. imo maybe tad to dark.... but that said i watched as a very small kid be 7. and i scared easy. this movie never bothered me. so i dk they may of hit it just right even for the weeklings like me
you must have not seen "Batman Vs The Ninja Turtles". I grew up in the 90s, this movie was one of my fav movies of all times... but the Batman crossover movie was so much fun!
I just love the whole scene the exchange, the dramatic turn around when he realizes the rat is splinter, the undying love for a family member as they charge shredder knowing they probably cant win but he is the last obstacle in reclaiming their father
This movie shows that you can make a movie dark without it having to be absolutely depressing. Mixing fun dialog but with a dark moody atmosphere and not insulting kids intelligence.

When the music hit with the fight, all kidding and joking went away. You could hear it in all of the turtles aggressive sounds, especially when Raph came in with the flying kick.
Damn 30+ years old and this can still give me chills. The delivery of lines, music, the practical effects with no flashy bs, the characters personalities and emotions. I used to carry this VHS with me everywhere as a kid.

Unfortunately I lost Turtles 1 at some point, and just was left with Turtles 2 (Secret of the Ooze) so that's the one I can quote faithfully today, even Kino's lines ("Sure sure, I'll 'dream on (dweeb)', but when I do it'll be of something a little thinner!! *speeds away on his motorbike* HAHA!") Turtles 1 tho was the better movie, and I'm kinda glad every blue moon I go back to watch it I kinda forgot how awesome it was the first time I watched it as a kid.
Not enough people realize how amazing this FILM is. The acting, cinematography, score, screenplay, editing, characters, sets, costume design, EVERYTHING.
I still get the chills when I watch this. I was born in the 80s and this was an absolute masterpiece. Still is. I was obsessed. I used to run around with my Ninja Turtles Night Gown and pretend I was Donatello and my Dad was Raphael. Good times. I’ll be 40 this year. Wish I could go back for one day.
This movie will always hold a special place in my heart for me. Not just because I was a huge Ninja Turtle fan back in the day. But when tickets for this movie was released. My mom waited in line for 4 hours to get me and my friends at the time tickets to go see this movie. I had no idea they even were released before the movie came out. But she knew. I lost my mom on June 1st 2016. I have 2 little boys of my own now. And when I sit them down to watch this movie. I'll let them know about what their grandma did to make sure their dad was there on opening night to see this movie. Love you and miss you mom. Edit: Wow! Thanks for the likes. Without a doubt the best Turtle movie and one of the best independent action films of all time. Great action, great characterisation. Real enough to believe it, and the turtles looked great .
Oh yeah, this movie was (and still is) flawless. "Secret of the Ooze" was a guilty pleasure, and as a kid, it was fun. But, TMNT III was horrible! Even hated that movie as a kid lol 😂
3:40 onward is just a roller coaster of emotions. And the craziest part is this whole time you're being shown Splinter as frail and powerless but then you forgot he the m***f**** ninja that trained them turtles and still has skills you weren't aware of. I love how it really just comes back to the whole martial arts element of his master's feud, and how at the end the parry, the perfectly smooth finish, just demonstrated Splinter still had the superior skill.
To me, this movie is what really felt real. The plot story is something I can relate as what happens between the turtle bothers can also happen to us such as fighting between each other. In the end we see that we need each other more than we realize and if we lose it, we take it for granted. That's what made this movie so great.
“Death comes for us all Oroku Saki but something much worse comes for you, for when you die it will be……..without honor.” Coldest line I’ve ever heard til this day. I remember watching this in the theater when I was 5 and that line was just the baddest and always lived with me. The crowd roared when he fell and they yelled out joy when Casey says “oops!” Such an amazing experience this movie was and is. They’ll never make them this good again.
I remember watching this on VHS every weekend when the cousins would meet up lol. Shredder had the hardest entrance I've ever seen. I was shook. Thought he floated onto the roof to fight the Turtles

@ exactly. Shredder was toying with them mentally through the whole thing up to the end. Using their love for their father to enrage them. Still, It does a great job displaying the emotional state they were in. They would’ve lost had splinter not shown up.
One of the things I'll always love about this scene is that, brief as it was, Leo wasn't fucking around. He was trying to take Shredder's head home with him.
Establishing dominance and superiority. He's also patient. All of that went out the window 🪟 when he saw Splinter though, proving that Splinter is the superior one of them all.

@@ldgc7172 In the comics, it was Shredder's brother who was in love with the girl and challenged Yoshi to a duel. Not wanting either to die, she begged her love to flee with her. He did so, shaming himself for love of her, but Oroku's brother caught up with them and was killed by her while fighting Yoshi, so Shredder tracked them down in America to kill them both. According to the codes of their clan, Shredder was actually the honorable one and loyal to the tenants of Ninjutsu while Splinter and the Turtles were the students of a traitor to be hunted down by every Ninja Clan.
There'll never make a turtles movie like this again. The first and one and only the best. Turtles II was already a huge departure from the first one. It almost feels like it didn't even come from the same world. Different April, different Donatello....different voice of Raph. Yeah, it just didn't even feel like a sequel to the first movie. Should have just made its own thing.
Very true. In the cartoon show, the Shredder was comically incompetent. But in this movie, he was Hannibal Lecter frightening. Especially the scene when he was searching Danny's pockets and found the drawing of Leonardo. I held my breath the entire time.

I rewatched this as a 39 year old now and its better now than it was when i was a kid... this film is damn near perfect.. you have the heroes you root for, get beat down, they train get better come back only to still lose to shredder
Nostalgia is a powerfull thing, but in the wrong hands, it could be used as a tool, to gain money! Sadly, when filmmakers today uses nostalgia in their movies, they became instead a heartless and woke movies. Disneys star wars are great examples of this, also female Ghostbusters too!
this is obviously not the most complex fight scene, but the simplicity of shredder fighting them 1v1 along with the lines and the music make this perfect.
After further reading the comments and following some of the highlights that happen at split-seconds throughout the fight, I realised the choreography is waaaaaaay more complex than I had originally thought. I had never paid attention before that Leo scored three hits (third hit was deflected with the blades on Shredder's pauldron). I also never realised that Shredder was slowly losing the fight via attrition (which he admits to, due to Leo scoring those hits on his right trapezoid muscle and right bicep). So he changed up tactics to get in their head and get them emotional. You're right that the choreography was not the most complex, but it was extremely effective for the storytelling and much deeper than how I remembered it when viewing it all those years ago.

@@heckensteiner4713 The steady cam wide shots for the master takes is just so on-point. Only cuts away or edits to show significant change in the dynamic of the fight. Man, 80s and early 90s films had absolutely superb cinematography.
This is honestly the best Teenage Muntant Ninja Turtle movie ever made. The darkness, the realism, and the voice acting is on point. I remember being a kid in the theaters seeing this, it was a dream come true as a child. Also this version of Raphael is why he's my favorite turtle. That attitude is perfect.

I love Leo's attack on him. The editing, sound design and action in that small section is one of my favorite parts of the film. I also love that Leo and Raph are the only ones to even lay a finger on him.
Holy crap, man! I was born in 2004 and I even have a DVD (I still have the DVD of the first 2 TMNT movies) of the first TMNT. I love this movie! It's not the first time I ever seen TMNT (I have seen the CGI TMNT tv series before) I love, love, love, Ninja Turtles! Turtle Power 4ever!
I love how the mood changes in this fight; they're all joking and laughing at first, even Leo. By the time they realize they're in over their heads, it's too late. They run a gamut of emotions here; levity, confusion, panic, anger then total fear. Fantastic storytelling. Great way to remind us that these guys are just kids and their emotions are all over the place.

What's crazy about this while sequence is how the turtles fight shredder separately. Donnie is calculated but can't make use of his weapon. Mikey runs in controlling his weapons but has no plan. Raph goes in aggressively and quickly looses. Leo goes in with control and patience and scores a hit. Perfect reflection of their personalities without even being blatant about it.
Absolutely true. Everything you said is true. But to add, everybody else's choreography is also in character and on point. Shredder stays still, using short movements like a master, and uses manipulation to get what he wants until he falls to his hatred and looses control. And Splinter just stays stoic and uses his enemy's hatred against him. But there's another beat, that Leo is the one to lose his cool in the end and Raph is the one to choose to throw the weapons away, that Donny and Mikey follow. It's because Raph has made his journey and mastered the darkness in him. Leo is still making that journey. I know the sequels change that up but in just this movie's trajectory, it all works. Oh and Casey's choreography is "Oops". ❤
Raph actually does land a pretty well executed back kick, although given Shredder's Armour it doesn't have much effect.. Leo obviously is the most skilled of the turtles in combat and gave Shredder a run for his money until Shredder employed psychological warfare.
This movie did something special when it blended the darkness and violence of the original comics with the comedy and light-heartedness of the cartoon. It was the best of both worlds.
As a kid we saw it in the cinema and we were a little disheartened with "how it was different to the cartoon". Little did we know at the time that it was taking details from the comic and adding cartoon details in, effectively future proofing it. When we saw it again years later we realised just how amazing it was with it's accuracy to the source material.
@@LeeONardo - Same experience here, I remember seeing it when I was in middle school at the theater, and it was quite a switch from the cartoon. But man, that was *THE* movie of the summer. It reminded me a lot of the Batman craze of 89.
Before I watched this for the first time (I was 8) I actually only knew the 87 cartoon. When I saw this movie I actually PREFERRED the way Turtles were portrayed and it was after that I looked into the comics and from then on I only wanted dark and gritty TMNT as opposed to the kiddified ones.
One of the best comic book final fights. so much storytelling behind it, so perfectly shot. immaculate cinematography, gritty grounded choreography, incredible dialogue, immaculate music score smh...this is just an all round perfect 10
For any TMNT fan who grew up in the 80s. This movie was amazing. The work and engineering for the costumes were truly amazing. Blows away any CGI bullshit
I don't think the cgi is that bad honestly. It's just the turtles look so grotesque when compared to any other appearance. They look so extreme that's it's jarring. My problem with the 2014 films is simply they are all spectacle and lacks any heart. It lacks the personal moments such as when we see the turtles dealing with grief. Even the final battle in 90's film has more emotional weight than the 2014 version. That line of dialogue between Leo and Shredder when he taunts him, shows the depth of love and fury each turtle is feeling at that moment.
This was first film I ever watched in the cinema. I was 6 years old at the time I was already a fan of the cartoon and I had all the toys. I went into the cinema super excited, and I was buzzing by the time it was over. I was blown away by the tone of it and the Jim Henson work on the costumes was incredible. It still holds up today
it's crazy how the stunt actors wore those puppet costumes which weighed about 60lbs and those were the light ones. for the close ups and talking scenes they wore heavier more detailed costumes
I'll never understand how, if they CLD make this back then, and, on the budget they had.... it looked worse each n everytime after and was more expensive......I'll b honest...the first film, CLDa and shlda earned and Oscar/academy award for the SFX .....
nothing beats practical effects. Movies are magic a trick of the eye and computers will never look as good as something real that actually exists physically.
Splinter's Speech is so cold, it's something that sticks in my mind even apart from this monumental achievement of a movie. _"Death comes for us all Oroku Saki, but something much worse comes for you, for when you die it will be...without honor."_ Kevin Clash *killed* the delivery. It is sagacious and powerful. Unfortunate what has become of him.
Bro this has been one of my all time favorite movies since I was 4 years old, I'm 34 now and had no idea that Splinter was voiced by the same guy that did Elmo. What a talent!!
Three things I've always adored about this scene: (1) The soundtrack, (2) the fact that these guys are performing amazingly fast and fluid martial arts choreography in suits that weigh like 50 pounds, and (3) Shredder is such a badass that he just destroys the Turtles with hardly any effort. This was so breathtaking to see in the theater at 12 years old.
Everyone seems to forget Michelangelos battle time against Shredder lasted longer. You can hear them continue fighting off camera for quite a while when it shows Casey Jones and the others on ground
Yup. And they did it almost blindfolded too because they had minimum vision when they donned those suits. That's a high level of martial arts that can never be topped.
Deleted scenes included, please. Either have them on the side or put them in the movie like what was done with the Terminator 2 Extreme DVD & Independence Day on DVD. Have the uncut version with deleted scenes & the theatrical version.
Exactly just good old practical effects something that is really missing in movies today I know it is every comic book movie nowadays has some type of horrible looking CGI now honestly CGI is so overused at this point
@@acewillingham yep. It literally just makes movies look like a video game, and personally I can't even watch them when I see it. Examples of good use of CGI are very very rare (LOTR, Dark Knight, King Kong (2005), where they made it look real. Personally I prefer bad costumes over bad CGI.
Love how Splinter silently goes off to rescue his sons. He knew the turtles were facing an opponent like no other and that they would need him. The way they show the love between him and the turtles in this movie is top level. This is classic in every way shape and form.
I saw the TMNT movie in a small German suburban cinema is early 1991. One of the best if not THE best cinema experience I ever had. 80s and early 90s cinema was magical, pure and simple as that. I miss the 80s and 90s theatre days. Nowadays movies are often boring and overpolished/overproduced, too much CGI... the practical effects and puppets are just much more real than CGI! And Shredders first entrance got us so PUMPED UP! Great soundtrack too! Glad to be an 80s kid! :)
@@RaptureMusicOfficial The way the Human brain processes visual information makes us especially talented as a species at recognising real objects, people, animals etc. This is why solid actual objects like models and animatronics and the like are easier for us to accept than the CGI imagery which triggers the uncanny valley effect in our perception.
Something I just noticed about this fight is how there are very few jump cuts. This is something so many modern action flicks suffer from. This fight shines by not only having great set up and characters, but by also being so well shot. Wide angles to show off the combatants and keeping it still on them to establish a rhythm. They only cut when and important maneuver or decisive blow is dealt. Fucking love this movie.

There is really good writing behind this fight. If you watch closely, you'll see the nuance. When Donatello comes in, Shredder's moves are calculated, outsmarting everything one move ahead. Michaelangelo immediately starts flailing about with his chaotic nunchaku. Shredder's moves indicate he knows he has to go on the offensive, as the longer he spends in the fight, the more likely he is to be randomly hit. Raphael comes in too aggressive with the jump kick, and Shredder uses his momentum against him, essentially flipping him with his own kick. Only Leonardo has the training and focus to get a hit on Shredder (2 in fact, but the last is against his shoulder armor). Shredder realized before he got cut (as evidenced by his strained grunting) that Leonardo is skilled enough to go toe to toe with him. When his arm gets cut, he understands he has to change his tempo, exposing his weakness to get a hit on Leonardo. He's essentially used all of their weaknesses as were foreshadowed in the film against them. And of course then realizes if he kills Leonardo he wins the fight. Unfortunately for him, he also has a weakness, and he falls for it as well. It's a bit ironic that the chaotic nunchaku that he so craftily disarmed from the least mature turtle, was used against him in a very wise, calculated manner that was likely reminiscent of that of the style of Splinter's master, Hamato Yoshi.
I wouldn't say that about leo like hes better then all of them and more skillfull he just was fortunate shredder still out classed him eventually the others would of got a hit of him too if the fight keep going.
@@tyrelcollins1649 he’s the leader, he’s more composed and there’s been many examples in the cartoons of Leo’s dominance over the crew even tho Ralph is the hot head who can fight just as good as Leo but lacks the composure and experience to deal with his emotions. Ralph makes mistakes often.
I love how when Leo gets emotional he charges in in a very Raph way and when Shredder tells them to throw their weapons Raph, in a very Leo logical way, is the first to do so.
You can see him connecting the dots. He knew Yoshi's pet rat scarred his face, and he knew the turtles could fight in the same fighting style. Right before ordered Splinter be killed, he demanded to know what they are and where they learned to fight. It's as if subconsciously he knew there was a connection and could only in that moment no longer deny it.
Parents crying and complaining this one was to dark is the reason the franchise went in another direction. Be nice if somebody picked this style up in 2020 and made another like this one.
I agree with you 💯. I like the dark shadowy direction they went with with the original Ninja Turtles. It makes the movie feel more raw and authentic unlike these newer fake, friendly, cringy CGI ninja turtle movies. If they remake another Ninja turtles movie like the original, mixed in with better martial arts Choreography and keep the dark ominous vibe from the original, we will have a winner guaranteed!!!!!
This movie holds a special place in my heart. Being a kid in the 80s, my entire childhood was the Ninja Turtles. When this came out, my grandmother took me to see it. She made me a red bandana because Raphael was my favorite. I wish I still had it because she has passed away, but every time I watch this, especially this scene I go back to that time for just a few minutes
Born in 81 Donatello was my favorite just because I had the toy lol. Don’t even remember how I got it. When it was in theaters I saw it countless times by myself 😂 I was like 7 n shit. My moms would just drop me off and scoop me up lmao good times

When the boys get serious, every one of their strikes is aimed at Shredder's head, (save for Donnie's perfect leg sweep) with Leo really wanting his head. They really weren't playing anymore, outstanding direction and choreography!
I always feel like even then he was almost toying with them. When Leo got that hit in on his arm he picked up the pace and knocked Leo away almost immediately. While they were worn out and winded he wasn't even phased. He was a legit threat in this movie.

Forget kids born in the early 80s; for anyone who saw the new movies, this stands as a masterpiece. My deepest hope for the Last Ronin movie is that they stick to a grittier version of this costume style, like it's still these same turtles who have survived countless battles.
They all got their ass kicked too, which was great lol. I don't remember ever seeing Shredder from any version of TMNT take out all four turtles with ease. Like it was a walk in the park. They made Shredder badass in the 1990 version. His voice, his music, his demeanor etc ...everything was on point. What stopped him in the end was simple revenge. If shredder didnt act on emotion he would have probably defeated splinter but splinter's composure and mind tricks got the best of him and he became tuna fish in a can.

@@segagenesis7708 Episode 1 was when he went back to NYC without the Technodrome or any rock warriors, foot soldiers, or even Bebop & Rocksteady, so he recruited Baxter and tried to make the turtles look like crooks with a fake ninja gang. Episode 2 was when the Eye of Zarnath angle began and where Shredder easily beat all of them without breaking a sweat.

Man the 2003 cartoon serious is REALLY good and it is very similar to the movie's story. Get to know season 1 and then season 2 until 7 will absolutely blow your mind!
Splinter knows that Shredder showed vulnerability when he furiously asked Splinter "how do they fight so well?" Poetic that his sins came back to haunt him.
It's crazy what they did with such a small budget. Now, they throw gazillions of dollars into these CGI fests and they still cannot compare to this movie in terms of quality.
I bet most of that 13.5 million dollar budget was spent on the turtle suits as the head of them was doing the facial expressions was done remotely by someone behind the cameras

The music. The score. How they captured the essence of inner city 90s. The relation between father and sons. Splinter and the Turtles. Charles and Danny. shredder and his lost boys. Old and new. Loyalty and vengeance. The lessons splinter bestows upon his boys. The acting. The great script. This movie is perfect.
When I was a child watching this, this movie has me crying at the campfire scene and emotional as Shredder was beating the Turtles. I wish the TMNT movies could go back to this.
I always loved how he twirled his weapon just once before fighting them. Almost seemed like he was taunting them. It was his way of saying "this wont take long." Badass
Movie was way ahead of its time. Even watching it back now, such a solid fight scene. The way they're able to move in those costumes, so fluidly, freaking amazing. This beats anything CGI they did with the newer films.
They had 2 different suits for each turtle. One was made for the non action, talking scenes which had mechanical work and another designed for the action scenes.
I did enjoy it, but there were some very dumb moments ngl. Like the Shredder just standing there while the Turtles were discussing or how he just took them out with one or two simple hits
This is the greatest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle of all time. The story was simple and realistic. Nothing over the top, but believable, yet still high stakes. After rewatching this scene, the choreograph is so good, quick and brutal just like in a real fight. Watch where leonardo slices the shredder. Punches are barely pulled. The shredder is so exacting in his movements. This movie is just the standard bearer for any future tmnt movie and Id even put comic book movie. We don't need the spectacular, we just need an engaging movie like this. The writers deserve an award for this movie.
Well said, man, thumbs up! I saw the TMNT movie in a small German suburban cinema is early 1991. One of the best if not THE best cinema experience I ever had. 80s and early 90s cinema was magical, pure and simple as that. I miss the 80s and 90s theatre days. Nowadays movies are often boring and overpolished/overproduced, too much CGI... the practical effects and puppets are just much more real than CGI! And Shredders first entrance got us so PUMPED UP! Great soundtrack too! Glad to be an 80s kid! :)
That's actually the psychology behind the character, Orokou Saki is a raging narcissist. He kills a woman when he can't have her after stalking her all the way to another country. He picks a fight with April and orders her NOT to report about The Foot Clan thus bringing attention to The Foot Clan. When it comes to his appearance he carries himself like royalty or a nobleman so having a scarred face would be enough to send him in a blind rage. Let alone he was charging what he believed to be a feeble, elderly rat...so...
My favorite part of this whole scene: With Leo out of commission, Raph becomes the new leader. So Mike and Donny look to him before they throw their weapons away. The little details, man.

Every time I see the new line logo with the film strip pieces I get excited and hope I'm watching TMNT. Doesn't go away.
My favorite quote from Jim Henson company. "It's not about if they look realistic. It's about you believing they're there." And I think they nailed that.
That is so very interesting. It's like with what happened with the live action Sonic movie; originally, Sonic looked hyper realistic (aka grotesque and unappealing). Then, after Sonic took to social media to voice their grievances, the studio remade Sonic, thought he looks like a cartoon character in the real world, like that guy you quoted, his actions and interactions with the other characters in the movie felt so real that you could actually feel as though he's really there in the room with them.

They nailed it 100%. They look so life like once you're watching the movie it's amazing how authentic the entire film is. So dark and gritty at times with a pinch of humor.
My only major beef is they showed every aspect and personality of each turtle except Donatello. At least once it should have shown at the very least a grungy looking lab or workshop.

He has the bargaining chip, or at least he thinks he does. It's precisely like the cartoon....He's confident until he knows the plan failed, then he acts erratically and fails himself too. That's what most people miss about this "dark" movie. It still carried the heart and humor of the audience it was after my age and younger who's first taste of the turtles was the cartoon and not the comic book. The timeout thing is true too obviously haha.

This movie will always hold a special place in my heart for me. Not just because I was a huge Ninja Turtle fan back in the day. But when tickets for this movie was released. My mom waited in line for 4 hours to get me and my friends at the time tickets to go see this movie. I had no idea they even were released before the movie came out. But she knew. I lost my mom on June 1st 2016. I have 2 little boys of my own now. And when I sit them down to watch this movie. I'll let them know about what their grandma did to make sure their dad was there on opening night to see this movie. Love you and miss you mom.

Without a doubt the best Turtle movie and one of the best independent action films of all time. Great action, great characterisation. Real enough to believe it, and the turtles looked great .
Oh yeah, this movie was (and still is) flawless. "Secret of the Ooze" was a guilty pleasure, and as a kid, it was fun. But, TMNT III was horrible! Even hated that movie as a kid lol 😂
3:40 onward is just a roller coaster of emotions. And the craziest part is this whole time you're being shown Splinter as frail and powerless but then you forgot he the m***f**** ninja that trained them turtles and still has skills you weren't aware of. I love how it really just comes back to the whole martial arts element of his master's feud, and how at the end the parry, the perfectly smooth finish, just demonstrated Splinter still had the superior skill.

To me, this movie is what really felt real. The plot story is something I can relate as what happens between the turtle bothers can also happen to us such as fighting between each other. In the end we see that we need each other more than we realize and if we lose it, we take it for granted. That's what made this movie so great.

One of the things I'll always love about this scene is that, brief as it was, Leo wasn't fucking around. He was trying to take Shredder's head home with him.

He did so, shaming himself for love of her, but Oroku's brother caught up with them and was killed by her while fighting Yoshi, so Shredder tracked them down in America to kill them both. According to the codes of their clan, Shredder was actually the honorable one and loyal to the tenants of Ninjutsu while Splinter and the Turtles were the students of a traitor to be hunted down by every Ninja Clan.

It almost feels like it didn't even come from the same world. Different April, different Donatello....different voice of Raph. Yeah, it just didn't even feel like a sequel to the first movie. Very true. In the cartoon show, the Shredder was comically incompetent. But in this movie, he was Hannibal Lecter frightening. Especially the scene when he was searching Danny's pockets and found the drawing of Leonardo. I held my breath the entire time.

You never question for a second that you're looking at teenage turtles. This is crazy to accomplish without a hint of cgi.
this is obviously not the most complex fight scene, but the simplicity of shredder fighting them 1v1 along with the lines and the music make this perfect.
After further reading the comments and following some of the highlights that happen at split-seconds throughout the fight, I realised the choreography is waaaaaaay more complex than I had originally thought. I had never paid attention before that Leo scored three hits (third hit was deflected with the blades on Shredder's pauldron). I also never realised that Shredder was slowly losing the fight via attrition (which he admits to, due to Leo scoring those hits on his right trapezoid muscle and right bicep). So he changed up tactics to get in their head and get them emotional. You're right that the choreography was not the most complex, but it was extremely effective for the storytelling and much deeper than how I remembered it when viewing it all those years ago.
This is so much better than a screen stuffed with CGI. The atmosphere here along with the score is so gritty, dark, but realistic. Love it.

I love how the mood changes in this fight; they're all joking and laughing at first, even Leo. By the time they realize they're in over their heads, it's too late. They run a gamut of emotions here; levity, confusion, panic, anger then total fear. Fantastic storytelling. Great way to remind us that these guys are just kids and their emotions are all over the place.

What's crazy about this while sequence is how the turtles fight shredder separately.
Donnie is calculated but can't make use of his weapon.
Mikey runs in controlling his weapons but has no plan.
Raph goes in aggressively and quickly looses.
Leo goes in with control and patience and scores a hit.
Perfect reflection of their personalities without even being blatant about it.
Absolutely true. Everything you said is true. But to add, everybody else's choreography is also in character and on point.
Shredder stays still, using short movements like a master, and uses manipulation to get what he wants until he falls to his hatred and looses control.
And Splinter just stays stoic and uses his enemy's hatred against him.
But there's another beat, that Leo is the one to lose his cool in the end and Raph is the one to choose to throw the weapons away, that Donny and Mikey follow. It's because Raph has made his journey and mastered the darkness in him. Leo is still making that journey.
I know the sequels change that up but in just this movie's trajectory, it all works.
Oh and Casey's choreography is "Oops". ❤
Oh, Leo scores more than one hit, my friend. He actually scores about 2 or 3, if you look and count them.
Raph actually does land a pretty well executed back kick, although given Shredder's Armour it doesn't have much effect.. Leo obviously is the most skilled of the turtles in combat and gave Shredder a run for his money until Shredder employed psychological warfare.

This movie did something special when it blended the darkness and violence of the original comics with the comedy and light-heartedness of the cartoon. It was the best of both worlds.
As a kid we saw it in the cinema and we were a little disheartened with "how it was different to the cartoon".
Little did we know at the time that it was taking details from the comic and adding cartoon details in, effectively future proofing it.
When we saw it again years later we realised just how amazing it was with it's accuracy to the source material.

This movie is on my top ten list of best comic book movie adaptations.
Before I watched this for the first time (I was 8) I actually only knew the 87 cartoon. When I saw this movie I actually PREFERRED the way Turtles were portrayed and it was after that I looked into the comics and from then on I only wanted dark and gritty TMNT as opposed to the kiddified ones.
Funny though that Shredder still lived after being impaled from such a tall height and crushed inside a garbage truck

I don't think the cgi is that bad honestly. It's just the turtles look so grotesque when compared to any other appearance. They look so extreme that's it's jarring. My problem with the 2014 films is simply they are all spectacle and lacks any heart. It lacks the personal moments such as when we see the turtles dealing with grief. Even the final battle in 90's film has more emotional weight than the 2014 version. That line of dialogue between Leo and Shredder when he taunts him, shows the depth of love and fury each turtle is feeling at that moment.
This was first film I ever watched in the cinema. I was 6 years old at the time I was already a fan of the cartoon and I had all the toys. I went into the cinema super excited, and I was buzzing by the time it was over. I was blown away by the tone of it and the Jim Henson work on the costumes was incredible. It still holds up today

it's crazy how the stunt actors wore those puppet costumes which weighed about 60lbs and those were the light ones. for the close ups and talking scenes they wore heavier more detailed costumes

Splinter's Speech is so cold, it's something that sticks in my mind even apart from this monumental achievement of a movie. _"Death comes for us all Oroku Saki, but something much worse comes for you, for when you die it will be...without honor."_ Kevin Clash *killed* the delivery. Three things I've always adored about this scene: (1) The soundtrack, (2) the fact that these guys are performing amazingly fast and fluid martial arts choreography in suits that weigh like 50 pounds, and (3) Shredder is such a badass that he just destroys the Turtles with hardly any effort. This was so breathtaking to see in the theater at 12 years old.
I do like how Leo is the one to actually land a hit on Shredder however.

Everyone seems to forget Michelangelos battle time against Shredder lasted longer. You can hear them continue fighting off camera for quite a while when it shows Casey Jones and the others on ground

The way the stuntmen were able to move around in those suits is amazing, all the fight scenes are great.
Yup. And they did it almost blindfolded too because they had minimum vision when they donned those suits. That's a high level of martial arts that can never be topped.

@@acewillingham yep. It literally just makes movies look like a video game, and personally I can't even watch them when I see it. Examples of good use of CGI are very very rare (LOTR, Dark Knight, King Kong (2005), where they made it look real. Personally I prefer bad costumes over bad CGI.

Love how Splinter silently goes off to rescue his sons. He knew the turtles were facing an opponent like no other and that they would need him. The way they show the love between him and the turtles in this movie is top level. This is classic in every way shape and form.
It's pretty safe to assume splinter is hearing the boys getting their tails handed to them.
I saw the TMNT movie in a small German suburban cinema is early 1991. One of the best if not THE best cinema experience I ever had. 80s and early 90s cinema was magical, pure and simple as that. I miss the 80s and 90s theatre days. Nowadays movies are often boring and overpolished/overproduced, too much CGI... the practical effects and puppets are just much more real than CGI! And Shredders first entrance got us so PUMPED UP! Great soundtrack too! Glad to be an 80s kid! :)

The way the Human brain processes visual information makes us especially talented as a species at recognising real objects, people, animals etc. This is why solid actual objects like models and animatronics and the like are easier for us to accept than the CGI imagery which triggers the uncanny valley effect in our perception.

Something I just noticed about this fight is how there are very few jump cuts. This is something so many modern action flicks suffer from.
This fight shines by not only having great set up and characters, but by also being so well shot. Wide angles to show off the combatants and keeping it still on them to establish a rhythm. They only cut when and important maneuver or decisive blow is dealt. Fucking love this movie.

There is really good writing behind this fight. If you watch closely, you'll see the nuance.
When Donatello comes in, Shredder's moves are calculated, outsmarting everything one move ahead.
Michaelangelo immediately starts flailing about with his chaotic nunchaku. Shredder's moves indicate he knows he has to go on the offensive, as the longer he spends in the fight, the more likely he is to be randomly hit.
Raphael comes in too aggressive with the jump kick, and Shredder uses his momentum against him, essentially flipping him with his own kick.
Only Leonardo has the training and focus to get a hit on Shredder (2 in fact, but the last is against his shoulder armor). Shredder realized before he got cut (as evidenced by his strained grunting) that Leonardo is skilled enough to go toe to toe with him. When his arm gets cut, he understands he has to change his tempo, exposing his weakness to get a hit on Leonardo.
He's essentially used all of their weaknesses as were foreshadowed in the film against them. And of course then realizes if he kills Leonardo he wins the fight.
Unfortunately for him, he also has a weakness, and he falls for it as well. It's a bit ironic that the chaotic nunchaku that he so craftily disarmed from the least mature turtle, was used against him in a very wise, calculated manner that was likely reminiscent of that of the style of Splinter's master, Hamato Yoshi.

I love how when Leo gets emotional he charges in in a very Raph way and when Shredder tells them to throw their weapons Raph, in a very Leo logical way, is the first to do so.
Leo and Ralph have always been a stark contrast to one another and that’s where (love it or hate it) their chemistry comes from.

When he removes his mask, the way he says 'you' while touching his scar and the music, 30 years later it still gives me goosebumps.
That music is perfect. I so miss the heavy, resonant electronic sound of the 80s.
You can see him connecting the dots. He knew Yoshi's pet rat scarred his face, and he knew the turtles could fight in the same fighting style. Right before ordered Splinter be killed, he demanded to know what they are and where they learned to fight. It's as if subconsciously he knew there was a connection and could only in that moment no longer deny it.
He consciously knew there was a connection, dumbass. Nothing UN- about it.
Plus how Raphael said "its him"
That was a reminder of what happened as Splinter is also a reminder that his rivals legacy lives on....
Kids movies in the late 80s early 90s were on another level.
Parents crying and complaining this one was to dark is the reason the franchise went in another direction. Be nice if somebody picked this style up in 2020 and made another like this one.
Imagine if the movie ignored the parents, we could have gotten 4 or 5 more movies out of this one. Not like it hurt toy sales any.

It makes the movie feel more raw and authentic unlike these newer fake, friendly, cringy CGI ninja turtle movies. If they remake another Ninja turtles movie like the original, mixed in with better martial arts Choreography and keep the dark ominous vibe from the original, we will have a winner guaranteed!!!!!

This movie holds a special place in my heart. Being a kid in the 80s, my entire childhood was the Ninja Turtles. When this came out, my grandmother took me to see it. She made me a red bandana because Raphael was my favorite. I wish I still had it because she has passed away, but every time I watch this, especially this scene I go back to that time for just a few minutes

When the boys get serious, every one of their strikes is aimed at Shredder's head, (save for Donnie's perfect leg sweep) with Leo really wanting his head. They really weren't playing anymore, outstanding direction and choreography!
I always feel like even then he was almost toying with them. When Leo got that hit in on his arm he picked up the pace and knocked Leo away almost immediately.
While they were worn out and winded he wasn't even phased. He was a legit threat in this movie.

Forget kids born in the early 80s; for anyone who saw the new movies, this stands as a masterpiece. My deepest hope for the Last Ronin movie is that they stick to a grittier version of this costume style, like it's still these same turtles who have survived countless battles.

They made Shredder badass in the 1990 version. His voice, his music, his demeanor etc ...everything was on point. What stopped him in the end was simple revenge. If shredder didnt act on emotion he would have probably defeated splinter but splinter's composure and mind tricks got the best of him and he became tuna fish in a can.

Episode 2 was when the Eye of Zarnath angle began and where Shredder easily beat all of them without breaking a sweat.

When I was a child watching this, this movie has me crying at the campfire scene and emotional as Shredder was beating the Turtles. I wish the TMNT movies could go back to this.

Movie was way ahead of its time. Even watching it back now, such a solid fight scene. The way they're able to move in those costumes, so fluidly, freaking amazing. This beats anything CGI they did with the newer films.

They had 2 different suits for each turtle. One was made for the non action, talking scenes which had mechanical work and another designed for the action scenes.

This is the greatest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle of all time. The story was simple and realistic. Nothing over the top, but believable, yet still high stakes. After rewatching this scene, the choreograph is so good, quick and brutal just like in a real fight. Watch where leonardo slices the shredder. Punches are barely pulled. The shredder is so exacting in his movements. This movie is just the standard bearer for any future tmnt movie and Id even put comic book movie. We don't need the spectacular, we just need an engaging movie like this. The writers deserve an award for this movie.

Foe sure! And especially so considering the smallish budget, and short window of filming time! This movie was and still is amazing!

Well said, man, thumbs up! I saw the TMNT movie in a small German suburban cinema is early 1991. One of the best if not THE best cinema experience I ever had. 80s and early 90s cinema was magical, pure and simple as that. I miss the 80s and 90s theatre days. Nowadays movies are often boring and overpolished/overproduced, too much CGI... the practical effects and puppets are just much more real than CGI! And Shredders first entrance got us so PUMPED UP! Great soundtrack too! Glad to be an 80s kid! :)

That's actually the psychology behind the character, Orokou Saki is a raging narcissist. He kills a woman when he can't have her after stalking her all the way to another country. He picks a fight with April and orders her NOT to report about The Foot Clan thus bringing attention to The Foot Clan. When it comes to his appearance he carries himself like royalty or a nobleman so having a scarred face would be enough to send him in a blind rage. Let alone he was charging what he believed to be a feeble, elderly rat...so...

My favorite part of this whole scene: With Leo out of commission, Raph becomes the new leader. So Mike and Donny look to him before they throw their weapons away. The little details, man.
