Lyrics : When we grew up and went to school/ There were *certain teachers* who/ Would *hurt* the children any way they could/ By pouring their derision/ Upon anything we did/ *Exposing every weakness* / However carefully hidden by the kids
Doug : LOL grow a pair! School had some cool teachers, stop whinning!
Ignore the fact Doug apparently does not know how to read. His point of view about the movie comes out as...really offensive. He is literally watching a movie about depression and abuse, explaining how those problems would go away if the main character just forget about it. It's ironic how Doug input about "The Wall" sounds almost exactly like the teacher in "The Trial" advocating abuse as normal, shaming the ones who could not quite adjust to it.
It's no wonder half of his crew does not not work with him anymore. What a prick!

Fennah's animation can be a little bit weird sometimes, and his characters didn't really didn't have any reason to be in the end. Although he is improving overtime, so I like seeing where his stuff goes.
I sincerely hope those two got paid substantially for this, although given NC's track record, they probably weren't given proper material or a decent timeframe to work with.

My interpretation of Pink's neo-Nazi persona was that his first concert in his new incarnation happened, and maybe the parts where the audience was incited to riot and form a fascist group of their own. Then something within him caused him to have a My God What Have I Done moment, and that's when we see him curled up in the bathroom--you can hear the concert announcer at the beginning of the scene, warming up the crowd for what's supposed to be his appearance. But the other interpretation works just as well...that none of it ever happened, that it was in his mind and that he is horrified at the turn he could so easily have taken.

    • @mattammarofficial

Basically, this review of The Wall was almost technically a celebration of the worst aspects of NC. Nostalgia Critic's reviews are usually very colloquial. Instead of intelligently picking out all the problems without sounding opinionated, he just whines and screams about how much he hates this movie. This is evident in the “Another Brick in The Wall” parody when he sings “This is pandering like hell”. Analysis on Pandering is usually alright in most intelligent essays, but from the way he says it, it sounds very bigoted because he mostly talks about it in a very one-sided way in his prior reviews. He also never elaborates on his point and repeats himself all the time which causes his criticisms to usually not make sense. Sometimes he even goes off-topic and references things that have nothing to do with what he is reviewing for immature comparison. One example of this point is in the “Another Brick in The Wall” parody when he compares the antagonism of Pink’s teacher with antagonists in 90s adverts as played by adults. Considering I haven’t seen much 90s adverts lately because I myself haven’t been nostalgic for a while, this criticism doesn’t make any sense, and it won’t make any sense for younger viewers or fans of Pink Floyd who may not know what he’s talking about.
Another reason why this review was hated was because he completely misunderstood the film. He was very much only paying attention to the visuals instead of the plot and context of the film, hence why he called most parts boring and decried certain scenes. The “I’m Jesus” part is a prime example of this. The scene which it is parodying is of a shot where Pink (the main character) is lying in his pool but is hallucinating that he is in a pool of blood. NC thinks that this is a reference to Jesus because of Pink’s crossed position while he is lying, and the pool of blood. Another example is the “Comfortably Numb” scene where he calls it bland and forgettable due to its slow pace.
Another example of his misunderstanding of the film is the “Another Brick in The Wall” parody where he attempts to erase the main context from the scene about post-wartime schools in order to do an easier parody of the scene which is about the modern-day US education system. This particular scene annoyed some fans and confused others because of what was happening in the scene. (Basically, NC was doing a Dracula voice while 4 adults in blue button-down shirts were running away from a grumpy teacher while chastising Roger Waters for criticising the school system). One final example is the “Goodbye Blue Sky” parody where NC chastises the song for just only existing for the film to win an Oscar. This irritated most fans (including myself) because it seemed like NC forgot that the original 1979 album existed, and only came to watch the film because that thought just came to his head for no abrupt reason.
One other reason why it is usually hated is because most people find the “Trial” scene creepy. Fennah’s animated characters that appear in it, have very little build-up and the appearance of them themselves fall into the uncanny valley. Their high-quality presence completely juxtaposes with the poor effects seen in the video prior to that. Take, for example, the seemingly out of context slide show in the “In the Flesh” parody, and the overuse of green screen in the “Another Brick in The Wall” parody.
Other things that are worth mentioning as factors for the hatred in the video include the off-topic moments that have little to do with the film that is being reviewed itself. For example: At the end of the video, Corey Taylor the Slipknot frontman sings the Spongebob Squarepants theme after spending the majority of the video sitting in a chair doing nothing.

apparently because Doug gave them 17 days (or weeks I can't remember atm) they admitted that the scenes could have been better polished had they had more time, but aside from that their characters are nothing more then glorified cameos , though they still had some fun working on them for the video.

There's one very subtle thing I like about the movie. Pink's wife meets the man who eventually becomes her lover at a Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament march. If you read between the lines, it's a very marked contrast between her and Pink: his reaction to the harshness of the world (due to his long-standing emotional problems) is to withdraw and disconnect. Pink's wife, by contrast, reacts to the problems of the world (mainly, THE problem facing the world in the early eighties) by engaging with the world around her, taking action, getting involved and at least TRYING to change things for the better. And although normally I'm the last person who would condone adultery, I can understand why, after trying to get through to Pink for so long, she'd find more in common with a man who is also willing to get involved and make a difference rather than run and hide.

This is old, but I recently watched the film for the first time (loved it, might just be one of my favorite films of all time) and remembered that Doug's "review" existed, and I have been obsessed with all the videos that rightfully dunk on him.
I think it really says a lot that Doug sees an art piece that is so raw and vulnerable about its pain, and his immediate response is to go, "Just stop crying, ya crybaby!" It also might partially explain why the backlash to his review was so intense - he's not just invalidating Pink/ Roger's trauma, but also the trauma and feelings of everyone who relates or resonates to the film or album in any way.

I feel one of the other running problems with Doug's content is that he has a rather simplistic view of media in general. Even before the Wall video or the change the channel situation happened, I noticed how hollow the recent reviews were on certain movies in comparison to other reviewers who reviewed the same material. Even when it comes to the backlash on some of the projects he's done, Doug never seems to really dig deeper into why people didn't like it, believing people simply don't like change when it came to the complaints about the sketches or clipless reviews, or even simply thinking that people didn't like him goofing on The Wall despite saying that it was okay. Rob seems to have a similar problem as he's made similar takes in the real thoughts videos.

I found it extra bothersome because The Wall holds a special place in my heart because I dealt with a lot of similar issues that were articulated in the album. It helped be find solace, knowing that someone was able to create art so relatable and beautiful. My interesting experience with this whole ordeal. Get ready, cuz it's lengthy.
A '97 baby having grown into slight autism, generalized anxiety disorder, and eventually depression, I've only heard bits and pieces of the Wall growing up through their radio-played hits that rightfully can still be heard on the waves today (Hey You, Young Lust, Another Brick Pt. 2 though personally the proper way to play that one is to start it with Happiest Days, like my local rock station would always do). I saw parts of the movie on a VHS my stepdad had when I was about 10. Even at 18 I only got to hear the album in the background of a 2 hour cab ride and didn't get to really delve into it
Now 23, having watched Nostalgia Critic for a few years (before I learned about #ChangetheChannel), I had heard he did a review of The Wall, and was ABOUT to watch it when TH-cam (like the good spy it is sometimes) recommended to me, instead, many many MANY videos about how fucking horrid the "review" turned out to be, even remembering clips of the animations which I hadn't even seen in years. Now doubting myself about the review, I instead decided it was time I officially gave a whole intent listen to the album's entirety.
As an adult now, It CHANGED me.
Getting lost in the music, the lyrics, the tone, it was like all of the sudden my eyes were opened to the absolute curses upon my constantly-whirring brain. For the first time in my life, I actually found a phenomenon that I CONNECTED my own personal weirdness to, something to be compared to, instead of just saying "well it's because I was born different and some sort of enigma." In a matter of listens, my picture was painted much clear, and the gravity of my mental lowering was settling onto my heart. I had a better understanding of both the album AND myself. I listened to it again, and again, and would constantly listen on my bad days just to match the tone. I watched the movie. I obsessed over the animations. I constantly cursed the length of vinyls in late 70s for cutting off "What Shall We Do Now", one of THE BEST fucking tracks on the album that couldn't even make it on.
But at the same time, the clearer picture became my worst enemy.
In the midst of the COVID crisis, I was seeing the world as something much more colder and scarier. The people around me showed their true colors, a pandemic was painted into a crisis, the people become restless, the friends pulling away, my anxiety and depression seemed dialed up to 15 out of a possible 6. The only way in my head I could cope with my sadness was to turn it into an anger towards everyone else, to hide behind my own wall and become my own symbol of a stone hearted vocalist. In the recesses of my nuclear mind, I imagined myself as some plague-doctor-clad revolutionist who felt peace was no longer an option, that America was built on wrath and that wrath was the only thing that could shape its future. I wanted to revolt against everything I was opposed by, dubbing them "diseases of the world". Religious zealots who constantly told me I'd burn in hell for not going to church. Southern rednecks who shut me out for my mental health (I grew up in Kentucky). The rich folk who ran the town operations and never fixed a thing. Having been raised by mom's lesson to be the better person and go the peaceful route, I felt the peaceful route was already taken and yielded no results, and we were in a brave new world that was corrupt-or-be-corrupted.
But in my moments that I connected with the few friends and family I still had, I remembered this was exactly what Roger Waters warned me about. Walling out anything and everything meant walling out those that still care and still knew you and understood you. From then, my plague doctor revolutionist receded back into my mind until it was nothing but some passing thought I once had. I tried to spend more time with friends (at a safe distance, I promise). I connected with my ma a little more. I spoke to people about what I was feeling. And to this day, I still listen to the Wall not as a guide but as an emotional tale I never get tired of, as well as a reminder I'm not alone, that my own wall was not the first and unfortunately won't be the last for many people. And as sad as a thought like that is, it also makes you a little less lonely, and it gives you a little hope. I don't think I built this wall; this town did, and these people did. And one day I'll leave and never look back, in a fresh new area with new people to surround myself in, maybe people that know how to handle mental health better than some shitty little smalltown in Kentucky. Hopefully someday this plague doctor will rest for good and never set foot in my thoughts again.
And with that lengthy storytelling to the world, I say fuck Doug Walker and his whole troupe.

Not sure if you'll see this, but it's more that I have to write it.
I remember that November day in 1979, day one of The Wall being out. 14 year old me bought it on day 1, took it up to my room in the attic, put a speaker on either side of me, and had my life changed. Less than a year in a new city, going to arts school, quiet as hell, committed to hiding from abuse at home. (It was also the first album I learned to play through on guitar.) The Wall told me I didn't want to grow into that kind of angry recluse (as it's telling me now, tbh).
And Doug wouldn't understand a goddamn word of what I just wrote.
On the plus side, seeing NC's horrid trashfire finally got me off watching him at all.
AND I made an effort to go through the playlists of reactions to see who gets it. I've found two I needed to sub to. Good job!

What an incredible review of The Wall!
Also, your take on Nostalgia Critic is spot on, and that song about why we shouldn’t follow him was incredibly powerful and actually well written. You are a great singer as well!
I unsubscribed from Channel Awesome as soon as I saw that Change the Channel Document in spring 2018, and I renounced all respect I previously had for them after their abysmal response to that document and the “change the channel” movement.
I should say, I was never aware of the existence of The Wall until Sardonicast recommended the film in late 2018 (months after I unsubscribed from Channel Awesome) and I really loved the album and the film since I got exposed to the film.
What Doug and co did to the wall in that review was horrific, pathetic, sad, and alarmingly terrible. I have no sympathy for Doug here, and I have nothing but respect for your channel after this excellent video.

I love this review of Doug Walkers Parody of The Wall! His review isn't even a review, it's a parody of the film because it doesn't break down the tremendous aspects and symbolism of the plot of the film.

The saddest part of this is that Channel Awesome got away with it- in the way they knew to expect it.
CinemaSnob told it right away: "hey, Logan Paul filmed a dead body and still has a career!"
Only a few OneyNG nudges with his parodies and Doug stood as a "better man" for it, just to spite Linkara.
    And I hate it.

It's so weird how he refers to the WWII/Holocaust imagery as just "WWII references", as if it's just some backdrop for a movie and not a real event with lasting consequences. I don't know if it's down to how it's taught in American schools or what, but it's weird he thinks it wouldn't have had any lasting impact on the people who had to live through it 🤔

Sad truth is Nostalgia Critic doesn't understand the basic concepts of what Rodger Waters was feeling is incredibly difficult for people do you understand how it feels to deal with mental illness and then trying to live a normal life which becomes more impossible as time goes on. This man's music was his medicine and then nostalgic critic just shit all over it.

The reason why the wall hasn't been released to blu-ray worldwide is because of the Gilmour waters fight, the fact that Sony music/bmg have the music rights along with waters and mgm owns the film distribution rights. The only official way to own the film on blu-ray is by buying a copy of the film from Spain which has the film in English but the film has forced Spanish subtitles.

The closest thing to a criterion release is when they aired the movie on tcm last August or July, I forgot. It was in hd and was part of their rock and roll month where they aired basically a double feature with the wall coming on after alan parker's movie fame from 1980. Other than that its been nothing involving the film

The nostalgia critics messages are NEVER consistent like in his review on the lorax he companied about Despite Ted being like 12 he sounds like a 20 something year old... clearly he has no idea how common that is in animation for young characters to sound older than they are (gravity falls anyone?)
