Sorry, but this seems like yet another person trying to leech off the success of another person by hating on them. All because you guys are jealous and too lazy to make actually good content of your own.
@@felixader Oh, I'm sure that was totally the case and totally not you guys trying to lie about him just to try to justify the pathetic leeching off of him. As an artist, I feel like crying hearing that marobot was allegedly paid only ten dollars for a fully colored big pieces like that. Their skills are amazing and drawings inspiring. The colors, the expressions and the movement. The art depicts everything loud and clear. If that is true I feel really awful for them and hope that the exposure got people to commission them and actually pay properly
@@MasterAlpha1000 To put this into perspective, I've shopped around for art commissions before. $30-$35 is a pretty good deal for a quick gig. Oh wait, I misspoke. $30-$35 was what I was paying for an image of just one character. This guy's creating entire scenes with multiple characters doing actions with visual gags and stuff! Like maybe I'm spoiled for good choices or out of touch, but I really feel like Doug could have easily been paying 4-5 times what he was already and it'd actually be pretty reasonable.
This is so weird. I'm native and the joke from the movie was cute as it was a pun of the slur, the character realized he had said that, and apologized. Doug just, said the slur.
Dang, I just now realized that. I thought the only pun with Wounded Bird was him being a literal Crow Indian, I never would've caught that one. Also since I don't have the full list of terms that can be considered such, there are going to be some slurs I don't know about and I definitely encourage people to inform me so I can take note.
@@LegoGoblin "american indian" is a term that originated from a mistake, but is a legal term, and it is preferred by at least some first nations organizations as far as I am aware
@@annajensen7360 Funny story: Back in 1492, most people do know the World is round, but they have no idea how far the landmasses are, as lack of information on new locations would have them think the long distance would lead to a failed sailing mission, with the sailors having eaten the food supplies, some ships returning home early to avoid death, or storms causing the ships to sink. Christopher Columbus, on the other hand, thinks the World is shaped like a pear with a nipple on top, which is how he thought he got to India so fast.
@@MagmaPaint BTW, NC calling Wounded Bird an “Injun Crow” is a pun of the name “Injun Joe”, a fictional character from Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer story, who is described as a violent, greedy and vengeful half-breed. Injun Joe is one of the most racist characters for depicting natives as intentionally malevolent.
Omg him not getting the mariachi owls joke about Rango dying is literally the dumbest thing. How did he not get it? it's a reocurring, simple joke to break the fourth wall every so often. literally HOW.
Yeah but they're not that small tho. Also I don't think they'd be able to kill or even injure anything unless like, you hit an eye. They just don't have much power cuz they bullets are simply too small. It's still stupid to bitch about cartoon logic tho.
Even then it's such a wild thing to point out as unrealistic/uncreative in a movie with sentient plants that move, walking talking animals, moles riding bats that explode like fighter jets, and a snake with a gatling gun tail
The shear irony of considering this a kids movie because it came out of nikolodeon whilst one of his favourite shows was avatar the last airbender is kinda insane to me
Doug Walker: "Wow, this movie's actually kinda awesome, by doing edgy stuff to actually *earn* its PG rating, and not talking down to the kiddies!" Also Doug Walker: "Maannnn, why's this movie talking about boring grownup stuff that kids won't like?"
As soon as I skipped ahead in Doug's review by accident and heard him say that Jake was a "written as dull as a rock", without even explaining why, especially when he's arguably one of the liveliest, fiercest characters in the movie, I knew I was in for something.
I find it ironic that Doug didn't respect animation as a medium in this "review", but then he respects it as a medium in his Puss In Boots: The Last Wish review? Since when, Doug? Since when do you respect animation? He does this so many times in his reviews and it makes me mad. He had the fucking nerve to point out the fact that the Disney remakes completely miss the point of the original animated classics they're based on, until Doug Walker decided to remake Pink Floyd's The Wall without understanding the source material. Are you really this out of touch, man? Who do you think you are? I also noticed that he gets production history for Foodfight! wrong by saying "Wow. Absolutely outstanding detail. Surely they must have asked Pixar to do this breath-taking work of genius! Actually, they did. And after reading the script, not only did they send this terrible animation as a joke, but they attached a hand-written note that said 'Go fuck yourselves!' signed by John Lasseter. But the director was so lazy, he used the clip anyway." What are you talking about? He also wrongly credits Zach Braff as the voice actor playing The Once-ler when it's actually Ed Helms. He even made an inaccurate comparison between The Grinch and The Mandalorian in his The Grinch 2018 Nostalgia Critic review. He went out of his way to say in his Troll In Central Park review "Yeah. This is what happens when you let your five year old write the screen play." After one of the characters from the movie say "I'm a bad troll. A very bad troll." And I'm just like "Dude, did you even look at your script for these reviews. Because it's you who sounds more childish."
I’m… pretty sure he meant the bit about Pixar and _Foodfight_ as a joke. Granted, it was completely unfunny and cringe, but it was exactly that - a completely unfunny and cringe joke.
@@ARCtheCartoonMaster I feel like I could've mentioned his DisneyCember Ghibli movie reviews, because when he talks about my favorite movie The Tale of The Princess Kaguya, I lost my shit. He said the movie was stale and that there are a lot of scenes that drag on forever. He says that the animation style is simple and you can't get sucked in as much. He doesn't understand it at all. Even Schaffrillas talked about the movie in his Every Studio Ghibli Movie Ranked and he ACTUALLY UNDERSTOOD THE MEANING OF THE MEANING OF THE MOVIE EVEN BETTER THAN DOUG FUCKING WALKER! Oh and by the way, I know that Disney doesn't release the American versions of the Ghibli films anymore, because they have a new American distribution company called GKIDS Films.
@@vetarlittorf1807 Dougie's point is that Doug Walker is a hypocrite on the matter. If he's going to rightfully criticise the Disney live-action remakes for completely missing the point of the source material, he shouldn't do the same to _The Wall._
"Ya don't get to hear the first half of Rangos story!" That... thats the point. That's literally the point. We as an audience don't know what rangos full story is, and frankly neither does Rango. When rattlesnake Jake shows up later and questions rangos tale, we don't even know where it realy BEGAN. To emphasize and help us understand that rango is making this up as he goes.
The fact that I'm enjoying this while eating a burrito and nodding along to a lot of the points feels strange to me. The good kind of strange. Great work as usual sis! Glad dad and I could help with some pointers for this.
They’ve also created the reverse-atmosphere where any criticism can be discounted as “nitpicking” at any time. Just a really bad effect on the whole review genre caused by people like Doug and CinemaSins and it sucks when creators I like (many of them former CA members) get written off as part of the same review culture when all of them (even in their exaggerated anger early days) were actually TRYING
Pointing out what makes no sense isn't nitpicking, it's what a good writer board should have done and failed to do properly. And calling criticism "nitpicking" is a way of gaslighting itself.
@@kregorovillupo3625 When a story makes no sense in the way it delivers its message/emotional beats (being contradictory, not understanding cause and effect, etc) and you criticize it for that, that's valid criticism. Saying Polar Express looks better than Rango is a claim I can barely comprehend. Criticizing Doug Walker is like a sport to me it’s just so easy and never gets old, I’m glad to see someone still calling out his bs lol Also geeked out when you shouted out IllWillPress I love him, criminally underrated!!
It's like when he claimed he liked the new "live action" version of Under the Sea better than the original animated version. There's just no way that's possible, even as delusional as he is. He _has_ to be lying to trick people into engaging in the comments... right?
One think that really made me dislike Doug's review of Rango (thou his whole video is garbage) was right at the begining when we get the introduction to Rango himself and Doug points that he looks completly out of place compared to the other characters. Even thou that's kinda point of the movie that he doesn't belong in Dirt at first. Even other characters like Priscilla point this out, only for him later once he becomes the new sheriff he blends in with the rest of the town folks.
@prehistorichero2755 he sounds like what almost every Reddit user wishes they were (which ofc isn’t a good thing for reasons that should be obvious to anyone w/ common sense, but I digress)
Of course he fucking looks out of place compared to the others. He's a chameleon in a town of desert animals. He's meant to stand out as a fish out of water. A child can understand that. Does he really now get it????
@prehistorichero2755 I get that it's an overused cliche frequently misapplied, but in this specific instance, I genuinely don't think Walker is clever enough for that. I've always gotten Big Dipshit energy from him, like a dog easily confused by where the ball goes when you hide it behind your back and then shocked when it reappears in your other hand.
Doug's comment about the music coming from 'Rango, Arizona' is literally answered in the clips provided. He's calling to the music from Raising Arizona, which had a lot of mariachi yodeling music.
I don't think she is literally misunderstanding the "joke" he is making, I think she's more like flabbergasted that he's making the assertion that mariachi yodeling music sounds like mariachi yodeling music. It would kinda be like pointing out that the anime Aggretsuko's music sounds like death metal.
It honestly makes me depressed to hear all of Doug's opinions on this movie, lambasting it in the way he does, and even has the *nerve* to say kids wouldn't understand this movie. While not every theme will be understood from a kid's perspective, it's still entertaining and easy to follow along. This is speaking from experience since *I* used to be a kid absolutely ENAMORED by this movie. It is still genuinely one of my all time favorite animated films and growing up with a better understanding of things I missed makes it all the better. It also boggles my mind that he said certain things were left unanswered that were LITERALLY. EXPLAINED. IN THE MOVIE. It makes me question if he even WATCHED the film in the first place or paid attention to it. Thank you for calling it out and making this essay in general. I would've never known he had this bad of a take on the film without it and I can only hope people who might've been spurred off seeing the film due to his video watch yours, or just watch it in general, to appreciate this movie better. It genuinely deserves so much love and more.
Yeah I remember as a kid absolutely loving the movie and enjoying it more and more with each subsequent rewatch as I’m able to pick up more elements of it
I’d take more issue with “Emotion capture” if it was one of the animators pretending this was some new thing when rotoscoping and other similar techniques have existed for years. Instead, it’s the actor who’s been in enough animated stuff to have an interest in the art form, but probably doesn’t know every exact technical term, so he came up with a cute little term for the technique based on another existing technique.
18:21 Also, even removing animal behaviour from the equation, I've actually met someone who has seizures that function this way. So yeah, a bit insensitive on Doug's part.
@prehistorichero2755 Yeah, I’m aware - he very much acts like a walking stereotype of how neurotypicals appear to us autistic folks, not knowing Jack about “nerdy” fields of knowledge because they think taxes are more important.
3:15- He admitted he had no idea why people found his Ducktales thumbnail creepy, so I guess he saw no problem with this either. Though when it comes to his problem regarding this film using the liar revealed trope, this is very similar to when he reviewed Chicken Run and somehow failed to notice that the film did something different with it. In the case of Chicken Run, no one pushed Rocky away when they discovered the truth. They also didn't discover it on their own. He left, assuming they would be mad at him after revealing the truth himself. And when he returned, yes, Ginger slapped him, but she did it because he left, not because he lied, and somehow, Doug didn't pick up on this even though the film kinda spells it out. In this case, no one really seemed to resent Rango when they found out the truth. They already saw him do enough heroic acts that it didn't entirely bother them that he lied, and sure enough, when he returns, they're all happy to see him. And like you mentioned, Rango himself had started to believe his own lie, which again is something different. Again, Doug somehow didn't notice this.
If anything, it wasn't about Rango lying to the people, but lying to himself, and it takes someone who IS the guy he says he is, who is an ACTUAL killer, to make him realise that he's nothing like the typical hero. He's only able to lie to himself for so long because he puts himself above others, but as soon as he's faced with something that's actually at his level, or at least his imagined level, he cracks under the pressure. It also works better than the typical liar revealed plot because at this point in the movie, we as the audience are like Rango and are starting to believe in the lie, at least in the sense that we are seeing him become more brave and heroic, whereas other liar revealed plots typically keep the lie festering in the viewer's heads until it inevitably comes crashing down.
Also, I think the liar revealed trope is different here because Rango's lies could've killed people. He made them think he could take on Rattlesnake Jake
31:25 GOD FORBID an academy award-winning movie have adult themes! Doug, if you can only stomach Cocomelon level discussion, then stick to ACTUAL childrens media instead of being annoying about an incredibly mature and generally fantastic film. Like, people don't crucify him for this video because Rango is a very little known movie; imagine if he was talking about Spirited Away or something.
He did a DisneyCember on _Spirited Away_ (as, for the longest time, the American dubs of the Ghibli films were produced by Disney), and he actually quite enjoyed it, his only real gripe being that Yubaba and Zeniba didn’t have enough distinguishing features, which he even acknowledged as a nitpick.
@@ARCtheCartoonMaster Umm, that's the point. Zeniba even brings it up in the movie: "We're identical twins but we're the complete opposite of each other." Also, they did have some SUBTLE differences: Yubaba is basically anime Mr. Krabs and absolutely COVERS herself in jewels while Zeniba is kinder, a bit of a troll, and has less jewelry. But, apparently Doug needs to have his hand held and doesn't understand "subtlety" unless it's subtlety with just the right amount of spoon-feeding.
Doug Walker doesn’t respect animation at all let alone anime. He has no knowledge of animation as a genre but he sees it as a kids show, he’d be much better off giving up as critic and try something other than animation critic
Rango got labeled for kids because its animated, that's sad especially when so many adult comedies exist and are accepted as adult media but almost certainly because of how garish the jokes usually are, but Rango is different. Rango is a real western about animated talking animals shooting each other with guns.
It’s still a family movie if not a specifically kid-oriented one. Personally I think we should be celebrating nuanced family/kids media. The attitudes that animation and family/kids media are lesser are ultimately one and the same and I feel they should be combatted together instead of separating the issues
You know, I recall in the review for Quest for Camelot, Doug Walker crapped himself over the lack of explanations. Yet, he wants more things, like the Spanish daggers moving, to not be explained. Just something I couldn't help but notice. Also, in the Alien vs. Predator review, he somehow missed the fact that one of the predators got an egg laid inside em by a face hugger and actually asked why the chest burster looked like the predator, instead of doing the research so he doesn't need to ask it. Like... does he just refuse to do research? Does he not watch a movie he's reviewing twice, so he don't miss anything? Is he blind to obvious scenes that weren't hidden in the slightest? I was a kid when I watched this movie, and I noticed what a critic, who does this for a living, missed!
Oh, he does the same thing with Freddy vs Jason. The moment he kept his "rants" going instead of researching on both behind the scenes, and the characters turned me off from his "work"
40:32 there an actual reason why those gaps are there. Those are meant to be where an add would play, which he has been doing in some of his recent videos. In other words, those edits were actually intentional.
I guess it's because he used to host his videos on BlipTv, which also had ad spots or whatever you call them. Redlettermedia used Blip too back in the day and they still do the black screen for ads to this day.
I remember being a big Nostalgia Critic fan back like 8-9 years ago and I kinda forgot about him for awhile. Now for the last couple years, I've heard about all his terrible opinions like his hate for The Wall, and how he treated his costars on those terrible movies he made like To Boldly Flee. Now his apparent narcissism makes everything he's done make so much more sense.
I don’t know how animation really works. But unlike Doug here, I wouldn’t criticize anything as unnecessary, at least not without doing research and hearing from animators.
40:27 this is actually SPECIFICALLY done as an ad break but for some reason they just dont have the normal NC adbreak intro/outro thing that is supposed to bump the TH-cam ad that would be placed there (and for some reason there's no sponsor for that particular video either, probably because people didnt want to sponsor NC lmao)
11:00 Seriously... I can't be the only one who watched the "making of" documentaries at the ends of the Disney VHS tapes, right? Like, Doug - you're older than me, and you're a professional critic, so you have more reason to know this stuff than I do. Actually, that last statement isn't true, since I actually studied visual effects and animation at a prestigious college on Grenfell Street, but even prior to then I knew more about this stuff than Doug does.
Just because I didn't see anyone else point it out in the comments, "Rango Arizona" is a reference to the 1987 Coen Brothers movie Raising Arizona whose soundtrack uses a similar vocalization to this movie. Not that it makes his joke any better for the reasons mentioned in the video (Also, they don't sound THAT similar upon further examination. Raising Arizona's score was more '50s Western-influenced, whereas the song from Rango featured there was more of a mariachi style), but I just thought I'd point it out and if nothing else, inspire a few more people to watch Raising Arizona, which is a very fun movie.
Thank you for your discussion on animation and the “kids film” stuff. I’ve always hated the argument of animation being for kids. Yes, there are pieces of animation aimed at kids like there are ones for adults, but animation as a MEDIUM and NOT a genre is one that works best when it can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone of any age and demographic.
Huh, this looks like a fun channel. Wonder if there is a running gag about how Doug lazily says two things are the exact same because one thing, like Rick and Deadpool.

Would you be making completely rational decisions? We've all made mistakes like that, regardless of how smart we are, and this kind of reductionist thinking is how we get characters whose sole character trait is having a 456+ IQ and instantly coming up with solutions to problems that most normal people would take a minute to a couple of hours to think up.
For me it's more of a matter of these characters being as boring and bland as an unsalted cracker on white bread. Characters like Brain from Arthur or AJ from Fairly Oddparents were the only characters I had available to look up to when I was put in Advanced Placement classes and I would've killed to have known about Tails or Sailor Mercury a lot sooner.
I actually hated the Smart characters being idiots cause of SML doing that to Cody and Jacki chu and I hate when show have characters point out the obvious thing that going to happen (HI HENRY DANGER).
I will say, Rango is a kids movie, as some people say; "A kids movie that can only be enjoyed by kids is not a good kids movie." A lot of people would use/see the term as an insult, but it's just an accurate description, saying something is a kids movie doesn't change the fact it's a good movie, just like The Incredibles, just like Treasure Planet, and just like Ratatouille
Your impression of Doug is insanely accurate. Like, it legitimately got the same knee-jerk reaction of irritation and cringe that actually hearing him speak elicits from me. That's a mark of true commitment to the craft right there!

Frankly how dare you use the cinematic masterpiece that is Over the Hedge (2006) as an example of a bad use of the liar revealed trope. Okay I'm being a little silly here, but I do genuinely think it's one of the extremely few good uses of the liar revealed trope because there's an actual, tangible, and notably immediate consequence for the lie being revealed. The scene where they all finally had the chance to be mad at him was also both hilarious and pretty well earned, while also lending itself well to the tension in the scene.
I still kind of like Nostalgia Critic because he clearly has SOME talent and SOME of his jokes are actually funny. And he does have SOME knowledge because I found his commentary on certain movies actually quite useful. But I won't deny it, he's an incompetent hypocrite who knows less about movie analysis than CinemaSins. Speaking of which, you kinda remind me of Th3BirdMan. I wouldn't know without any qualifying descriptions. There are small barrel, prickly pear, and Christmas varieties of cactus that can be grown in pots, there's aloe plants, and there's various succulent plants.
Not to play Devil's advocate for Doug here, but if you seriously think that him saying that "this movie would be cancelled in 2022 lol" was an endorsement of cancel culture or him "baiting Twitter" to come cancel the film, you probably misunderstood him just a little bit imo
The Emotion capture part was one I did actually take a lot of issue with as I love how they took all those extra steps to make those scenes feel more natural. It was brilliant.
9:09 "Rango Arizona" was a reference to the movie "Raising Arizona" and that's what the clip he showed was from. The music seems to be an homage or dupe of the iconic song from that movie (Raising Arizona Theme: Way Out There by Carter Burwell). It is not mariachi music. That song is also inspired by old westerns, so the similarity may be unintentional. Only so many ways to yodel, I guess.
3:08 He looks like that freaky-ash Papuan mask at the South Australian Museum. And for those not from Adelaide, said mask basically looks like that angry guard-dog grasshopper from _A Bug's Life_ if he were a mosquito. It used to freak the h€££ out of me as a kid, especially since it hung in the foyer at that time, instead of being in the actual exhibit like it is now.
Which one, the Disneycember or the NC episode because let's face it, anytime he does a Nostalgia Critic episode on anything he did a Disneycember or Dreamworksuary for it's not for a revisit or a rereview, it's entirely for views and ad revenue.
So glad I didn't make it past that petrifying thumbnail for his review. It's one of the few moments where "judging a book by its cover" is actually valid!
The “Rango Arizona “ joke was a reference to the movie Raising Arizona, which features a score in which yodeling is used. He features a scene where the yodeling music is played to contrast the music in Rango because he didn’t understand that mariachi music uses that kind of vocalization and just thought Rango was trying to imitate Raising Arizona.
Your vid inspired me to rewatch Rango, I hadn’t watched it since I was a kid and I remember being bored by it. I really loved it this time around! I’m not sure why Doug kept bringing up the “liar revealed” trope, I don’t feel like it’s very important to the overall story. And him repeatedly calling it a kid’s film got on my nerves.
I really dislike the NC, and that goes all the way back before I watched and read about the crap that went on with the Channel Awesome folks and their associates. His reviews stink of infantile observations and jokes, and not in the way that would please a kid, just in a way that rage baits adults. I can see a 12 yr old find him funny, but 12 yr olds have a still developing brain and are obviously not even able to process every bit of information given to them efficiently. They're not dumb, they're just susceptible to accepting someone else's opinion as fact very easily, especially someone they're seeing on a screen. But aside from everything annoying thing he does in his videos, this thing of continuously considering animation as a medium through which where stories are told to kids just enrages me to no end. The entire body of work of people like Satoshi Kon proves beyond a doubt that animation is not exclusively for kids and that it simply serves as a completely open space for translating the human mind and its processes when dealing with complex emotions. Kon is the one who comes to mind, but honestly, even (the often very cranky) Miyasaki defends that kids should not be coddled throughout their entire childhood and should be taught to deal with the real world early enough that it doesn't traumatize them later when adulthood hits - which is why he hates Disney and anything that follows their model (there could be a middle ground there, Mr Miyazaki, ease up won't you). But going back to Doug, it's surprising how he still gets any views at all, when you compare his stuff to much, _much_ better channels that examine this kind of media and back up their opinions with some solid arguments and serious research. You mentioned Schaffrillas as one, but you get other great people like Steve Reviews, Johnny 2 Cellos, Jay Exci and Super Eyepatch Wolf, to name a few, who do actual work to make their videos, and not just say "but I've watched a lot of cartoons!". Doug's work is lazy and misses the point 99% of the time. As for the Twitter bait jokes, how else is he supposed to remain even slightly relevant when others have surpassed him so long ago? To conclude this, I'm subscribing. Liked your style. (Editted for spelling)
A wise man once said "Doug wants to make art but he's a fundamentally incurious person who doesn't care much for what other people think or feel and all his ideas boil down to "What if Batman met Mario?"
My only problem with Doug reviewing style he will go into a movie making pointless jokes and not giving any real thought As I feel that reviewing style along with others that do it has become outdated as a real review is keeping it short and sweet but also making Honest and Understandable point something Steve reviews and even AVGN and his Friend mike have done
@@MagmaPaint Actually, Mag, Doug's ideas don't just boil down to "What if Batman met Mario?", they stop there. The Batman and Mario franchises are so diametrically opposed (one is a gritty urban crime detective action thriller about a wealthy playboy orphan defending the lower class as a crime-fighter and the other is a comedy about a working class Italian American plumber and his brother fighting for a princess and her kingdom) that writing a story where Batman and Mario get transported into each other's universe and fight for those outside of their comfort zones (Batman fighting for the monarchy in a more light-hearted setting and Mario fighting for the working class/poor/homeless in a darker one) and it practically writes itself and it has been done before several times But no, Doug would rather just have the two get into a dick measuring contest about which one is cooler. - doug complaining about the explanation of how Rango supposedly killed the Jenkins Brothers being too short as if he wouldn't have complained about it being too long if they'd actually shown the whole thing - doug complaining about the reveal of what the mayor's doing being too complicated for kids to follow as if he wouldn't have complained about it talking down to kids if it had been simpler also he did NOT just call Rattlesnake Jake "dull". genuinely one of the most intimidating and cool force of nature villains ever brought to film is "dull". we get it doug, you hate fun.
I know Nostalgia Critic only through the memes lobbed against the kind of people who get performatively angry about tv shows and internet media while missing pretty obvious bits of sarcasm and subtext and going on proportionality long nitpicky tangents, which is the archetype this review gives off too. Kind of a bizarre watch.
That scene with Rango walking after breakdown into his lowest point is really that sublime and soothing. I like rewatches film just because of that one scene. It's just insanely good.
In his review about that Shyamalan elevator movie, he has Malcolm, playing their rendition of the devil, make a joke about making more Republicans. I still have no idea how nobody on the production team or whatnot thought that making that "joke" might have been a shit idea.
Unlike South Park, which has those kinds of jokes down to an art, Doug and his crew don't have that level of talent and it's exacerbated by his philosophy of comedy needing to be based in misery (or more accurate to his level, cruelty) in order to work.
@@MagmaPaint To be fair, it’s a common philosophy that all comedy is based in suffering. The problem with Doug is that he takes that mantra too literally (because of course he does), and assumes that comedy involves people suffering physically, mentally, emotionally etc., when “suffering” in this context simply means anything going wrong, even something as simple as lame-ash puns. Granted, there is a time and a place for actual misery-based comedy - _Tom & Jerry_ and the aforementioned _South Park_ are fine examples of this - but Doug thinks that just because he personally favours that style of comedy, that must mean it’s *the* defining style of comedy there is, and others pale in comparison. It has the same energy as the _Family Guy_ writing staff thinking that today’s kids can’t enjoy books just because computers exist, ignoring that it’s possible for kids to have *multiple* hobbies, speaking as someone who was very much into books *and* computers as a kid. Not to mention, those franchises do dark comedy *far* better than Doug.
One of the first movies I ever watched was 'A Fistful Of Dollars' with my old man. I have seen nearly every spaghetti western ever churned out, and I can say with my whole chest that Rango is an absolutely fantastic love letter to the genre that I love so much. Also "A Million ways to Die in the West" being called anywhere near a perfect western killed a piece of my soul.
26:19 OH, you don't remember the side-characters from a movie you probably watched while scrolling tiktok? Weird how you don't remember things from a film you didn't care enough to watch genuinely.
I personally saw rango as a perfect representation of the hero’s journey. Rango is literally nobody, the name rango isn’t even his real name, we don’t know his real name, that’s the name he gave himself after stepping into the bar. He is the personification of “Heroes aren’t born, they’re made”. He wants to be the hero and through the events of the film he becomes that, but only after accepting his true self does he truly become one. And it really drives home to me that “anybody can be a hero”, and as the spirit of the west said. “It’s the deeds that make the man”, “no one can walk out of their own story” those lines still stick with me after all these years. A hero isn’t a person who goes around in a colorful suit and saves people for the clout, a true hero is someone who shows it through their deeds, and even if that person doesn’t see it that way, it’s not their call. And “no man can walk out on their own story” holds up for all of us. Our lives are our story, we can be the villain or hero of someone else’s, but we are all the main focus of our own lives, it’s up to you to decide what it is, but you can never leave it.
As a fan of westerns, I know a Lee Van Cleef reference when I see one(Rattlesnake Jake). What I did not pick up on until it was pointed out to me was that Rango also makes several references to Chinatown(1974). Rango is just so freaking good.
"Wow, a powerful person turns out to be a bad guy and a liar gets exposed for the inept fraud he really is? Whoever is writing my life really needs to lay off the tropes."
@@thefrogthatknows5251yeah that's the reason. You got him there. It's been six years guys, the only one in the controversy that still cares about it is probably linkara.
33:00 I really agree. There's actually literally a line in the movie I think by the mayor who says something along the lines of "We have no need for gunslingers anymore. It's a new Qest. We're businessmen now." Idk if I'm reaching, but it seemed relevant
I still love Doug and Nostalgia Critic, but sometimes his boomer age really shows in not completely understanding Gen Z nostalgia and only understanding nostalgia he grew up with in the 80’s-90’s
Another big issue I find with westerns, the older the better for this, is the depiction of Native Americans and the glorification of violence against them. As time passed, people fell out of love and into hate for this particular style of american historical revisionism. Like, there are western inspired movies I ADORE - the Mandalorian is a show that plays a lot up well - but the actual history? COvering it in a way that should be tolerated isn't something at least half of America would even tolerate, much less pay to see.
I wanna make a suggestion, this one is a bit of an older review Doung did but his review of Little Nemo in Slumberland is a prime expalme of him not only not understading a film but also pulling shit out of his ass at the last minute (watch the review and you will see what i mean)

@@quinnhurst9204 So let me get this straight: you're telling me not to be rude, yet its perfectly fine with attacking Doug's character and labeling him as a narcissist just because he has a different opinion on a movie? That sounds like the epitome of hypocrisy to me. Also, let's not pretend that I'm coming from a place of unprovoked aggression here. I enjoy poking fun at Nostalgia Critic, especially when it's in jest with Oneyplays. But I also recognize that his exaggerated persona is just that - a persona. Only an idiot would take offense at his takes in that format. However, when I poke fun at him or disagree with his takes, it's more of an "ummm...actually" type of energy, compared to the hostility Magmapaint displays towards NC in her videos. She screams at Doug, and I respond to her in her aggressive fashion. So, how's that for "being nice"?"
And here I thought I was the only one who enjoyed this movie and thought that critic was just utterly wrong, the majority of his takes and even viewpoints of how chicago is being treated are just incorrect. Very good video, really well done and discussed... Naturally handled well and honesty being able to explain why this movie works.
@MagmaPaint as a previous chicago resident for most of my life, that city is full of liars and those who want to make a quick buck off of false narratives. Doug being from chicago clearly takes this to heart, as he would rather post idiotic and false, but "eye catching" overreacted videos just for the extra attention, rather than something true and thoughtful that might not do as well audience wise.
I don't understand Doug. He wants mature themes in animation, yet he doesn't like it when mature themes are in animation? He respects animation as an art medium, yet he expects animation to be all slapstick and wacky comedy? He says that kids shouldn't be talked down to, yet he doesn't like it when a movie doesn't talk down to them? Either he really needs an editor to look over his scripts, or he needs to review something else other than animation.
Holy hell, where have you been hiding? This level of editing and effort put into criticriticism makes 2000 subscribers criminal! You've got one more ;)
A lot of people in the reviewer space, especially it’s early days, clearly took after Mystery Science Theater 3000. Doug Walker is a prime example of someone who saw that show but didn’t understand WHY it works
Oh my god 10$ per thumbnail??? Im legitimately raging, the amount of time and skill that goes into the old drawn thumbnails by MaroBot deserves so so much more, I definitely agree 60-75 minimum per thumbnail, especially considering the revenue Doug makes from his videos.
Okay, that Thesbians joke was good. Not Doug's, the movie's. That got a good chuckle out of me. Points to Rango, and I'm going to be real, from Southern rural-style Western movie, that's probably only going to age better and better with time.
I remember giving the NC another chance the day he uploaded his Rango (2011) review but after I watched it, that was the nail in the coffin and I haven't a single video of his since, keep in mind before I even gave him another chance I hadn't watched him for years anyways.
Has Mr Enter exited his villain arc? I unsubbed him years ago when he started making less and less Admirable Animations vids and focused only on Animated Atrocities, and I then later heard of his weird covid conspiracies and just everything about Growing Around. His heart always seemed to be in the right place but he just sunk into this hole of negativity so if he's gotten out of that then I'm genuinely happy for him.
I recently rewatched Rango. Now I'm getting all sorts of Rango related stuff in my recommended. But I'm not disappointed. Great job shooting down a critic. Now if only we could do that for all the critics that think Rise of Skywalker is a good movie.

How does Doug not know it's Vegas? He literally criticized the city in Hercules for looking like Vegas in the Disney-cember videos!
Which was a sticking point for the Oney Plays guys

I’d take more issue with “Emotion capture” if it was one of the animators pretending this was some new thing when rotoscoping and other similar techniques have existed for years.

Doug Walker doesn’t respect animation at all let alone anime. He has no knowledge of animation as a genre but he sees it as a kids show, he’d be much better off giving up as critic and try something other than animation critic
I disagree, he CAN respect animation. But it's exclusively nostalgic related stuff. Beauty and the Beast, Ducktales and Samurai Jack.
Anime and cartoons are completely different, cartoons are money laundering scheme, Anime is something only people with over 160 IQ can produce.
Animation isn't a genre
Rango got labeled for kids because its animated, that's sad especially when so many adult comedies exist and are accepted as adult media but almost certainly because of how garish the jokes usually are, but Rango is different. Rango is a real western about animated talking animals shooting each other with guns.
It’s still a family movie if not a specifically kid-oriented one. Personally I think we should be celebrating nuanced family/kids media. The attitudes that animation and family/kids media are lesser are ultimately one and the same and I feel they should be combatted together instead of separating the issues
The amount of Twitter arguments Doug tries to start is actually insane

Now his apparent narcissism makes everything he's done make so much more sense.
Once the toothpaste is out of the tube, there's no putting it back.
I don’t know how animation really works. But unlike Doug here, I wouldn’t criticize anything as unnecessary, at least not without doing research and hearing from animators.
Animation is quite the time consuming, detail oriented process, indeed. And it most certainly pays off when it's done well.
I don’t know much about animation but as an individual with eyes I can say this movie looks amazing lol
Meant to say the argument of animation being just for kids (which I still think is a stupid argument)

The scene where they all finally had the chance to be mad at him was also both hilarious and pretty well earned, while also lending itself well to the tension in the scene.
Oh that wasn't me who put that there, that was in Doug's slideshow of Liar Revealed plots. But yes, agreed. Over the Hedge is great.

So glad I didn't make it past that petrifying thumbnail for his review. It's one of the few moments where "judging a book by its cover" is actually valid!
You know it's bad when Mr. Enter writes a better version of a joke than you
The “Rango Arizona “ joke was a reference to the movie Raising Arizona, which features a score in which yodeling is used. He features a scene where the yodeling music is played to contrast the music in Rango because he didn’t understand that mariachi music uses that kind of vocalization and just thought Rango was trying to imitate Raising Arizona.
Also, you know, the thumbnail is...meant to be awkward. It's meant to be that way.
As a Native American, it’s funny seeing rango apologize for accidentally saying smth and then Doug straight up say “injun” not 10 seconds after ☠️
Remember, kids: "Tropes are Tools!"

@@MagmaPaint Actually, Mag, Doug's ideas don't just boil down to "What if Batman met Mario?", they stop there.
The Batman and Mario franchises are so diametrically opposed (one is a gritty urban crime detective action thriller about a wealthy playboy orphan defending the lower class as a crime-fighter and the other is a comedy about a working class Italian American plumber and his brother fighting for a princess and her kingdom) that writing a story where Batman and Mario get transported into each other's universe and fight for those outside of their comfort zones (Batman fighting for the monarchy in a more light-hearted setting and Mario fighting for the working class/poor/homeless in a darker one) and it practically writes itself and it has been done before several times

And it really drives home to me that “anybody can be a hero”,
and as the spirit of the west said.

Another big issue I find with westerns, the older the better for this, is the depiction of Native Americans and the glorification of violence against them. As time passed, people fell out of love and into hate for this particular style of american historical revisionism. COvering it in a way that should be tolerated isn't something at least half of America would even tolerate, much less pay to see.
