@@MaximEyes It is meaningless, but that does not mean that it does not matter in the college application process. It is a very important part of the application, and it is used heavily to determine scholarship allocation. However, it is meaningless in the sense that it is not standardized at all. Once you learn what your audience wants to read (teacher in most cases, but admissions person in this case) it becomes extremely easy to say exactly the kind of things they want to hear. A good, manipulative essay is one of the best things you can have if you want to get into a competitive college.
That’s your unweighted gpa, Weighted gpa goes up to 6, with honors classes worth 5.5 (or 5 can’t remember) and AP classes worth 6. Unless you do the math your self they don’t tell you your weighted gpa
@@bullfc9175 I think you might have that backwards. Where I went to school, AP classes are worth up to 5 points and idk how much honors classes are worth. It's possible that kind of thing varies by school, but it'd make more sense to standardize that.
I really like the system we have in Australia. Your ATAR (kinda final exams) is completely standardised and many more difficult subjects including languages and hard maths get extra credit towards your score.
@@d.rabbit7276 buddy, I wrote this comment a year ago. But I think what I was referring to is that your class grades matter more than your gpa because gpa isn’t a standardized thing. Our HS didn’t go past a 4.0, but when I looked at big schools and saw their GPA was over 4.0 as an average, it always was confusing and made me not want to apply since I knew I didn’t stand a chance.
Yes. Gpas r stupid. All 93s at my school would be a 3.0. One kid transfered to my school, then couldn't play sports because his GPA lowered after switching schools and was no longer allowed to play sports because his grades weren't good enough for my school
I’m glad someone finally brought up non standard grading. My school is an “IB school” so like every class is weighted meaning any kid with enough effort could get a 4.0-4.5 gpa no problem. Many “smart” kids even had 5.0s. On top of that Covid happened my senior year and due to online school every senior was automatically given either an A or F ( pretty much impossible to get an F, reserved only for those who just skipped the rest of the year of online school). Meaning a whole class of students had insanely good gpa’s.
not to mention how much more weighted lower grades are compared to higher grades. you could get a billion As and your GPA will only go up a little, but get ONE F and your GPA tanks.
Interestingly enough, the valedictorian in my class had a ridiculously high gpa. She never missed a school day in the 13 years of school, straight A's in all of high school, AP everything. I missed 43 days of school my senior year, and had a 3.5 gpa. I ended up going through college as a double major and she dropped out after 2 years because it was "too stressful", and works at a local retail store in our hometown of 10,000 people. It turns out, you really never know what's going to happen to someone when they reach adulthood and are on their own. Life is a cruel bitch.

I’m a C Average student. I got a 1440 on the PSAT in 8th grade (currently 10th) and this year I aced it. But here’s the thing: I’m a C average student. Why? Well, I’m in one of the most competitive schools in the country. The fact that I’m taking 4 APs doesn’t help with that either. GPA does matter, but it isn’t a perfect system.
I had a 3.4, with a ton of AP classes to raise it, and I'm working on a PhD. It really doesn't matter. Except when it comes to scholarships, I'm hurting there lol
I had a 2.95 Unweighted GPA and a 3.5 weighted GPA. GPA does matter sometimes, because I missed out on my state's scholarship because of my unweighted. For some reason, unweighted is all that really matters. Course I just graduated university, dual majoring and taking a minor, in four years, and I ended with a 3.45 GPA. So all is well.
For anyone reading that has a bad gpa here’s some advice your HS gpa matters but if you did bad like I did you’re not nearly out of luck. I graduated with like a 2.4 pretty fucking horrible. All you have to do is go to CC and this time give it your all and get out with your associates and a high gpa. Then you can just transfer to a University or wherever and on top of that you’ll spend less in total since you went to CC. Community College is underrated.
This is so true!!! My friend gets a GPA of 5 in his school because they provide the students with a lot of classes with easy tests and a low total. Whereas in my school, the tests are so much more difficult and the hardest classes only.
Okay, what I believe this video is getting at is that GPA isn’t a well-off indicator when comparing to others. There are different scales depending on the school, the number of classes you’ve taken, how challenging those courses were, extracurriculars during said course, etc. If a college were to choose a 4.0 student who had only easy courses and a student with a 3.4 with difficult courses and extracurriculars, then they would mostly choose the latter.
damn looking at the comments and it feels crazy how different high school and college admissions feel now and I graduated high school only 3 years ago. the pandemic must have really affected high schools, the only difference for me in college was that I had to go all online instead of half online.

@@hehehehaw1682 many financial benefits only come with high gpas. Many others need high gpas to get admitted into honors college programs. The stat exists because it matters. Colleges weigh them against the true intensity of your classes. An 85% in an AP class is equivalent to a 95% in a normal. Yes, you can good good jobs and go to a good college with a bad gpa, but you will likely be paying more and not getting the same benefits as a high achieving student going to the same college.
I know you didnt ask for suggestions but I still have one: Make sure whatever career you pick is something you will be happy in life doing. Don't go to college just because people say to go to college. If you go, it needs to be for something you're passionate about. Money isn't nearly as important as people make it out to be and you just need to have enough to be comfortable in life. A shitty job with amazing pay will not trump an amazing job with average pay
GPA matters a lot depending on your circumstances. I would’ve never been able to go to college without mine. Not because it helped me get into college (I would’ve gotten in anyways, although it did get me direct admit into my program, which is really nice) but because it got me close to a full ride scholarship. While schools consider a lot for admission, scholarships are still pretty focused on GPA or sports. Yes there are a few exceptions and other routes to get scholarships, but 90% of scholarships are going to kids with high GPAs or really good athletics. And there’s a lot of downsides and responsibilities to sports scholarships. Even if you’re getting a minority-based scholarship (which one of mine was) your GPA will put you way ahead of other people applying.
Also, it 1000% depends on your path in life. Some programs do care about GPA. Some don’t. So instead of listening to youtube channels that try and give the broadest and most general advice possible, look up your specific college, program, scholarships, etc to get way more personalized advice
In high school I used to have to tutor one of my buddies in calculus bc he would have failed and not been eligible for sports. At the end of the year he ended up with a higher grade than me. When I asked him how he managed to do that he confessed he had cheated on all the tests and since we usually did the homework together he got good enough homework grades to not make the teacher suspicious.
So that means I can go to college with my 2.3 gpa still ? :’) Edit: I ended up going to community college Gonna graduate next year with an associates in cybersecurity 👍

I agree because I have friends who go to University of Washington and UW’s GPA is 4.0 and some people got rejected with a 4.0 because there are some students below 3.0 who got in. In conclusion, colleges in general no matter if it’s prestigious or not, they don’t care that much about grades they care mainly about the student’s quality and how they are. The grades are boarding passes so if you have a D- in your last semester and you have a B in this semester and it can be any subject, that’s totally ok, because colleges want to see improvement and you obviously tried.
dude hearing this gives me hope because my dream collage when i looked it up you have to have a 5.0 gpa to even be considered and my school only goes to 4.0
My school has a dual credit early collage program that is pretty intensive but what sucks is that these students will have to work 10 times harder to get a high rank than the students who are in low level classes.
If you want to go to college don’t stress about weighted gpa, if you got a 3.8-4.0 unweighted (with some AP or dual credit classes) then with a good ACT or SAT (50-75th percentile) you’ll have a wide range of schools to choose from. It’s just high school and no one is going to ask about your HS gpa once you get to college. Now obviously if you want to get into, say, an Ivy League then shoot for the stars on everything, but you should always be trying your best!
Yeah but the recalculated gpa is what they report… so it is still a good statistic since usually the recalculation process is relatively standardized between universities
GPA WILL ALWAYS MATTER EXAM MARKS WILL ALWAYS MATTER NO MATTER WHAT SCHOOL YOUR IN YOU MUST GET EVERY SINGLE THING CORRECT WAR IS PEACE FREEDOM IS SLAVERY IGNORANCE IS STRENGH
One of the most crushing things when I transferred to a university from a community college with my hard earned 4.0 GPA was when the admissions people said “don’t worry about how bad your old GPA is, it doesn’t carry over! Clean slate!”
I wish this was true, because sadly it seems to ironically be a blocker for those who are the most interested in learning yet dont have access to the most resources including those who are inteligent especially because the more courses you take your gpa can sometimes end up lower even if you mainly did well just because of a couple of courses
I study in a presidental school, if u haven't heard about it, this is the kind of school which chooses the smartest student around the country and gives them free food ,lessons ,dormitory. instead of teachers we do have professors. So I hope that colleges look which kind of school u have studied
My take (and I literally work as a college advisor): gpa does matter; it just doesn't matter the way most people think it does, which is what this video is getting at. It all depends on the schools you're applying to. Yes, the average gpa at Harvard may be over a 4.0 (and you'll see the same for other Ivies and universities like them), but you have to remember that it's the average. That means there are students who get in with gpas that are higher AND lower than that. Of course, I'm not saying you're likely to get in to a school like Harvard with a 3.0 or below, but typically if you're at a 3.5, have a strong resume, recommendations from teachers who can speak highly of you, and write a great essay (not including SAT/ACT because many schools are test-optional), you'll be a good candidate for plenty of "top" schools (keeping in mind that there are tons amazing schools out there other than the Top 20 universities that most students tend to fixate on). One thing I'll re-emphasize from the video: colleges typically do recalculate your gpa. They do this to 1) figure out your weighted and unweighted gpa (if it's not already differentiated on your transcript) and 2) only see your gpa that incorporates grades for the courses that matter most for their admissions criteria (this may look like recalculating your gpa for only "core subjects" and taking out grades for elective courses that may inflate your overall average). So overall: diversify your list of colleges, put 100% effort into your applications, and believe that you'll get into to the school that's the best fit for you.
I got rejected from a college for having a 2.8 when the minimum was a 3.2. To any high school student, please get a 3 or above. I know it’s hard, but it’s genuinely important. GPA shouldn’t matter, but it does.
I was always a B and C student was some casual As I also skipped a lot of classes in high school. I was able to get a scholar ship that covered a 95% of my Business degree. I also got accepted to a lot of top tier colleges
I had a 3.25 gpa at my highschool. Yeah I don't remember shit from highschool. If I were to take a test on everything I learned from highschool right now, I'd probably bomb it. It really means nothing when you study and regurgitate information for a test, then forget it the next day.
Pretty sure these stats are self reported based on the recalculation done by the colleges themselves, or if not they are certainly based on a standard 4.0 scale. They wouldn’t just put out an average GPA that’s a raw average of numbers on different scales.
I heard a lot of colleges will instead look at class rank but for some reason my senior class is wicked smart so I’m worried. I have a 4.37 but that puts me at 17 when last year a 4.4 would have you top 5. It’s all the girls really, out of the top 17, guys take spots at 8,10,12,15, and 17 making me the 5th smartest guy but there are 12 girls ahead of me. We only have 160 kids so being rank 17 puts me out of the top 10% which might not look good.
Well if every kid in the class gets an A and you get a C, your probably dumb with a nice teacher. If u get the highest grade in the class and it's a C, your probably smart, but your teachers just a jerk
For those wondering or are just stupid: The basis at most schools is 4.0 - all A’s 5.0 - All A’s, waited, and only possible with all AP’s (AP classes give 1 point boost) 4.5 - All A’s, waited, and only possible with all honors level classes (honors have .5 point boost) If your specific school the one you go to provides IB then what ever they say cause idk and it’s confusing but if they don’t do not worry cause as it goes colleges only look if you are doing the most with what your given so take AP classes and honors don’t always stay at regular classes even if you get a slightly lower grade the weight makes up for it and the toughness of the class
That's why I remember hearing someone say how it's nice that my university offers A+ since, while it doesn't matter to gpa, it looks good on transcripts
The 3rd highest student in my class was INCREDIBLY stupid, but she had a flawless GPA bc she took nothing but the lowest level classes and got all As

I had an ok GPA (maybe high 3.8x) and a pretty bad ACT (26) and I got into Michigan by bs’ing the admissions essay. Once you learn what your audience wants to read (teacher in most cases, but admissions person in this case) it becomes extremely easy to say exactly the kind of things they want to hear. A good, manipulative essay is one of the best things you can have if you want to get into a competitive college.
Dude I’m trying to get into Michigan how did u write your essay?

Also the grading system is different depending on what state you live in.
Basically he’s saying individual classes matter more than average gpa.
Individual classes accumulated (and they will accommodate them) is exactly what your GPA is.
@@d.rabbit7276 buddy, I wrote this comment a year ago.
But I think what I was referring to is that your class grades matter more than your gpa because gpa isn’t a standardized thing. So if two students got the exact same grades in the exact same classes they could have different gpas depending on what school they went to.

@@nqrtzy8765 that's how averages work
Interestingly enough, the valedictorian in my class had a ridiculously high gpa. She never missed a school day in the 13 years of school, straight A's in all of high school, AP everything.

I’m in middle school right now and I’m saving these videos so I can get to know lots of stuff and get smarter and thank you for all the hel
The fact GPA dictates the "good" and "bad" students, it freal needs to be addressed instead of making kids compete with one another

I know you didnt ask for suggestions but I still have one:
Make sure whatever career you pick is something you will be happy in life doing.
Man ur advice is good

I agree because I have friends who go to University of Washington and UW’s GPA is 4.0 and some people got rejected with a 4.0 because there are some students below 3.0 who got in. In conclusion, colleges in general no matter if it’s prestigious or not, they don’t care that much about grades they care mainly about the student’s quality and how they are. The grades are boarding passes so if you have a D- in your last semester and you have a B in this semester and it can be any subject, that’s totally ok, because colleges want to see improvement and you obviously tried.
Over at Harvard they don't care about anything else except getting daddy's money really

Bro is setting people up for failure

Perspective will always be king 👑
Unweighted GPA 3.9 means “Great”
POV you’re trying to watch a short and some full video starts playing in the fucking background
I got rejected from a college for having a 2.8 when the minimum was a 3.2. To any high school student, please get a 3 or above. I know it’s hard, but it’s genuinely important. GPA shouldn’t matter, but it does.

Grading is also different everywhere. Sometimes it is super hard or super easy.
GPA is schools version of a credit score
Me living in Australia: What's a GPA?
For those wondering or are just stupid:
The basis at most schools is
4.0 - all A’s
5.0 - All A’s, waited, and only possible with all AP’s (AP classes give 1 point boost)
4.5 - All A’s, waited, and only possible with all honors level classes (honors have .5 point boost)
If your specific school the one you go to provides IB then what ever they say cause idk and it’s confusing but if they don’t do not worry cause as it goes colleges only look if you are doing the most with what your given so take AP classes and honors don’t always stay at regular classes even if you get a slightly lower grade the weight makes up for it and the toughness of the class
I’m Canada (at at least my area/district) GPA is calculated by percent. Rn, I have an 88% gpa which makes out to be 3.3 GPA
Your GPA tells you how little of a childhood you had
That's why I remember hearing someone say how it's nice that my university offers A+ since, while it doesn't matter to gpa, it looks good on transcripts
