I was on vacation at gulf shores AL and didn’t have any idea what I was doing but I was shore fishing and I had a minnow head rooster tail thing and I caught 15 Spanish mackerel! I now know what they were eating on it was glass minnows and they are really fun fish to catch thanks for the info!

Great catch and cook! I think most mackerel are good to eat, you just have to know how to treat it. I want to try that recipe. My better half and I are headed to the Outer Banks in NC this coming weekend. I've got my fingers crossed we can catch something to replicate the dish. I've been fishing for 30+ years and I'm still learning. I'm stealing some tips and tricks from you and Brook both. Tight lines my man!
Going on my summers "to make" list for sure. Subbing out Mayo or reducing is something I do all the time too, I find the flavour and textures improve with the use of strained yogurts, clotted creams or sour creams. Nothing wrong with Metric, in Canada we use both systems where they each work best.
Cero has a very clean, less oily/ mild fish taste. Similar to Wahoo. Very tasty, even in the raw presentations. Spanish has a strong fish flavor. Closer in flavor and texture to King Mackerel. Smaller sizes are a bit more mild in flavor.

Go to cedar keys sea horse reef during April or may and you catch like 20 to 26 inch Spanish. If you troll you can get kings too.
Lived in Melbourne Beach late 60s early 70s, went to Sebastian Inlet all the time. Glad it's still great!
These are the smallest Spanish Mackerel I have even seen! In Australia where I live they can grow over 1 meter long and up to 30KG
I caught 3 Spanish and a speck off the beach today with a bucktail thought I was the only one who used them for Spanish !

You need to do a glass minnow/shiner catch and cook. Fry them up whole they're delicious.

Nice video. I used to do a lot of Spanish mackerel fishing and I cought alot of fish on the yo-zuri 3dr minnow 2-3/4 inch model in glass minnow color.
