Super video. I really like mackerel but hitherto I have asked the fishmonger to filet for me. I now intend to use my boat to get out and catch fresh . Great lesson.
i had some mackerel cooked by my mum some 50 years ago straight out of the sea in Cornwall grilled with a salad. it remains the most memorable fish meal ever
Finally someone who takes an awesome, fresh ingredient like Mackerel and cooks it without covering his own flavor with pointless seasoning. A hint of salt and in the pan. That's how it should be done all the time. Thanks.
Scott Rea Nice recipe mate, one of my favorite fish. I love mackerel fried the same way you did that, with large field mushrooms fried in butter on toast for breakfast. Keep it up scott.
Went out in my boat the same day I watched your video and caught half a dozen lovely mackerel. I cooked them exactly the same way and they were beautiful. Thanks for the inspiration. Mike (Plymouth)
As a chef and working in Greenland with fresh fish every day ... i love to see a proff... work ... you are dooing things better than all these fancy cooks from tv... thanks again a saturday halloe from jylland Denmark
cheers Mac, , reallyappreciate your comment mate, im trying to create actual easy and tasty simple dishes.which is sometimes what the tv chefs dont do, they all assume people allready have a certain amount of culinary knowledge but they forget most people don't although like myself we buy the cookbooks but don't necessarily cook from them, cause they can be to hard to follow , so hopefully with my channel im demystify cooking and making dishes that are simple and achievable. all the best from the UK. many thanks. Scott
Best, simplest mackerel dish EVER! Plus fabulous un-fussy filleting instructions. I've always been one of those people trying to like mackerel, but always struggled to enjoy it, whether I or someone else cooked it. I've made this twice now, and now I agree that mackerel is delicious. Plus, that stonking pickled beetroot salad (I've been unable to get good damson jam so used blackcurrant instead - works beautifully). Thank you for changing my fish eating habits for ever...
my inspiration to buy whole fish! big thank you as your videos make it all look so simple , i have a big mackerel in my fridge cant wait for tonight will cook it like yours!
Excellent cutting then cooking, you did and enjoy a nice healthy and mouthwatering fish. I really like the way you cook. Thank you for sharing. 🌹💗💚💙👍👌 Stay tuned.
Mine didn't turn out as good as yours, but by far some of the best fish I had. Much cheaper than Cod and Tuna, and much more work work, but very tasty.
A great find, this helped me alot i stuffed the mackerel, and pan fried it,but i like this way better plus the filleting part was a good tip too, next time im doing it this way thanks Scott💯✌🏾
ive been catching so many mackerel just lately , I love em, ive been eating them for breakfast and dinner pretty much every day for the past month, been catching little joeys, so sweet, three or four little fillets pan fried in the morning, rounds of buttered toast mmm, had them in sweet n sour stir fry, tried them in a bun like a mackerel burger, and topped with melted cheese for a mackerel cheese burger, fried with potatoes, roasted with vegetables, and so fresh, I live opposite worthing pier, can catch them and have them in the pan under thirty minutes, mmm, ill miss them when they are gone, wont be long now its late September, mmm nice job of filleting them good video
Thanks for showing how to fillet mackerel. First time I have felt like I fileted a fish in the right manner. The filets were really nice. Tasted great.
Absolutely spot on! Fresh local mackerel, cheap, environmental great choice, small fish not poisoned with heavy metals. Great filleting lesson!!!! rock on...and the salad bonus :-)
Got my boat and fishing gear all prepared for the weekend. I love Mackarel but going to try this idea before the weekend is out. Thanks for posting this informative video.
What a fantastic video. I'm partially sighted and your close-up shots of the filleting and cooking process what absolutely perfect for me. Thank you very much for a great and informative video.
Several (many?) years ago in Florida USA. I chartered an offshore trip. The fishing was not superb, but among other more "prized" fish, I caught a couple of mackerel a bit larger than this. The captain and deckhands weren't too keen on keeping "just mackerel", but it was "my" charter, so we did. There was an associated cafe/restaurant with the charter with a "you catch it, we cook it" theme. I took the fresh mackerel into there. I asked the guys there to do whatever they thought would be best. Their skillet preparation was much like yours. A beetroot side wasn't presented, but I will always remember the crispy skin and the luxurious taste of those mackerel - over and above the so-called "prized" fish caught that day. Cheers!
Just got home having caught 12 mackeral this morning . Found this video and going to try it right now .I even have damson jam in the cupboard and Beetroot Happy days
Good video, when i have a lot of fish to fillet, I never bother with heading and gutting , just take the fillet off the frame, leaving the guts in the frsm, attached to the head. Much quicker
Thank you so much, growing up beside the sea side I was accustomed to mackerel but my mum had prepared it, I followed your video and had the most delicious fillets just as I remember.
I did it!! I filleted my first fish and cooked up a fine meal--all thanks to YOU, Scott Rea!! Husband LOVED the meal and was SO impressed with my ability to fillet the mackerel. Never ate mackerel before but it was so tasty. We'll be doing this recipe again!

It looks good but I would not put any salt or pepper on it . It doesn't need it . Same with beetroot salad , who wants that .
Interesting video very helpful 👌🏻🎣
Outstanding Video.... Great advice and well worth watching ;-)
Just filleted my first mackerel, thanks to this video. That cooking method was spot on as well. Thank you, Scott.
Enjoyed the recipe for the beetroot. Cheers !
The Mackerel is so underrated I dont know why that is, cos it is one of the best tasting fish out there! Thanks for the tip Scott.
You're right Neil. When I boat fished, I used to cook a couple straight out of the sea for lunch. Fantastic fish...
No it isn't spanish people love Mackerel.
So true. Nicest fish in the sea in my opinion. With its natural flavour it needs nothing to make it taste great.
Exactly, beautiful tasting fish
