Be interesting to see the Dark Relic items returning fora new type of OoS voyage, like the GH vaults and merchant shipwrecks, since the ghost fleets aren't that great.
vaults are okay, a little boring, but oos is the big one for me. theres no reason to go back to them as they only give skulls, same thing with the bountys idk
I joined with the anniversary update and played about shortly after emporium release. I can totally agree that the rag n bones were garbage, I cannot recall the annoying sailing but its important to know that the loot destination was random so you are very likely to just not being able to 100% it just like me. I tried my hardest and was completing every event 100% since I started at the time but this drove me mad-rest of it was great. The mercenary figurehead and full ship set is still precious to me altho I personally just returned from a 2 year break and in hindsight totally worth the gunpowder transporting. It really was the prime time in SoT for me in a weird way. Thanks for reading a strangers opinion and may your seas be calm sailing!
I've been playing since Summer 2020. The update that almost made me quit -- some may be surprised to hear -- was Pirate's Life. The main reason was the new enemies, especially the still-ugly and annoying ocean crawlers, EVERYWHERE. Even a simple chest-dig was nearly impossible. Pair them with phantoms, and it was super-impossible (at least for me). I took a long break hoping they'd fix how often these enemies appear, and they eventually did. Whew. The other thing is that I hated about the Pirate's Life update was that Disney was taking over everything in the world (Star Wars, Muppets, you name it), and the fact that they'd reached my favorite "little" video game that had helped keep me sane during the pandemic bothered me. Thanks for these videos! Always fun and informative.
As someone who played them all, let me give my own takes on them. -Blackpowder was SUPER fun as someone who enjoyed pulling dumb stunts with kegs. The amount of ships who had gunpowder on board meant you could see some lovely fireworks before they added any actual fireworks. Plus, knowing you could plop these down, do your own thing, then see a ship show up, meant you could head in a direction to guarantee gunpowder spawns when a fort wasn't an immediate option. -Cursed Relics was nice to see different loot, and because of the lack of guarantee, it gave standoffs where you'd have very tense hand over of dolls for skulls, or eyes for vessels... or just all out war to claim everything. The reaper chests sticking around were nice, but the lack of competition nowadays for them is just tragic. Blended content was interesting, but not enough on its own. I'd rate it mediocre at best. -Smuggler's fortune was genuinely awful. Never again.

As a new captain I gotta say this was a really good breakdown and flow of Sea of Thieves. Coming from Red Dead Online, Elite Dangerous, Eve Online, Albion Online and others, Sea of Thieves seems to offer a rewarding crew adventure we just don't have anywhere else. I wish crewing up was easier, swapping out ships at dock was a thing and a bit more play options with weapons, but beyond that it feels like a solid game to chill and play with friends without having to stress about RPG mechanics or even dealing with a setback beyond a session of play. With Diablo Immortal out and making millions, I wish the cultuer and design of Sea of Thieves was more successful.
That string of updates probably came at the exact wrong time for me. I've returned to the game in the last month, but I left right around when the Flameheart storyline was getting started with the Pendragon quest and Sitcher Jim becoming an Ashen Lord. It was a combination of feeling like little was going on, summer ending and college beginning, and growing distant from my friends.
I ~almost~ feel like they're running out of ideas/mechanics to add that won't turn it into another game completely / detract from the "piratey" sandbox nature of the game. There's only so many things you can do sailing around on a boat: go places to kill stuff, go places to get stuff, go places to deliver things... I'd like to see more life in the water and land - perhaps a few sea turtles when you get marooned on an island? Possibly a giant squid or other threats in the water besides sharks? Some air/land threats possibly? Also, another idea I think would be neat would be night-vision gained by an eye patch over half your hud during daylight. Honestly, it gets so dark at night that I can't really tell what I'm doing, where I'm going, or what's what. The mechanic could work like, the longer you have it on during the bright of day, the better your night vision at night. I don't know if it would be particularly popular but it would be a neat mechanic that gives you a handicap during the day, but a benefit at night. Also, if I'm not mistaken, it is part of real life pirate lore that they wore patches during the day to see better at night. There's a scene in Jack Reach II where his sniper buddy went thru a scene with his eye winced closed - Reacher asks, "is your eye alright?" and the sniper says "I'm saving my night vision".... and proceeds to pop some well aimed shots at night. Food for thought.

The one thing I really loved about Smuggler’s Fortune was the steal opportunities it presented in the first couple weeks. The commendation for stealing rag and bone crates made us keep an eye on Shipwreck Bay and led to some very fun steals. Unfortunately everyone was done with it within 2 weeks, and it took some of my friends almost 2 years to complete the stolen crate commendation because they missed when the event had just dropped. The other thing about these smaller updates is that they often had some pretty cool titles associated with the commendations that I still like to sport from time to time, including The Wandering Reaper, Death Defier, and Merchant of Death.
Well, since Arena closed I no longer play the game either. Except once every few weeks to see the new adventure and if I care enough to do it. So I guess my worst update was the Arena closing, I practically have no game anymore because they removed everything I like about it. They might aswell ad PVE servers at this point, I won't care in the slightest.
I do remember this being the part of the game's life that kept me from playing. Anniversary was so good then this happened. Did black powder and stopped until later.

I would grind every update to unlock ALL time limited cosmetics, was a part of a my pride to collect them all. But dark relics broke me. It was just so boring, monotonous, and too similar to the regular quests I could not bring myself to finish it.
I remember when this came out and ironically this is when is started really enjoying the game and playing it off the high of anniversary but yeah I definitely get why people hate these updates

So if i'm not mistaken, what made each of these updates 'bad' was their time limited 'event' quests which were really just designed to help introduce some new items or mechanics and I personally wouldn't say this makes them 'bad' updates. Boring maybe, But each update brought with it some good stuff. For instance the Stronghold gunpowder and Keg carrying skeletons was amazing. Especially back on release when the Keg skellies would run at you and they didn't activate the fuse. They blew up immediately. The entire community found it hilarious for about 2 weeks before their speed had to be dialed back. sometimes I wish we had special keg skellies that did this. Maybe the only warning you got was a shrill cry and their bones being colored red.
All of these are far better than the events we got throughout the last 2 or 3 years or so, these atleast gave us some voyages with new loot or more mega kegs to spice things up pvp wise. Compared to the events where we literally just have to do old content or just the same task as the last event, do a vault voyage, kill 50 skeletons, form an alliance and so on. Absolutely awful, especially that anniversary event where they re-released the hungering deep drum and some other year 1 cosmetics.
I played the alpha thinking when the game launched it would have as much content as it has today lol. I was clearly disappointed and didn’t play past day 1 until about a year ago. Now the game feels content complete and has an exciting future.
I quit as soon as Fotd update dropped not because I wanted to but because i met a bug that prevented me from playing for months that I couldn’t find a fix for now 2022 I’ve rejoined the seas and with a much better pc it’s feels much nicer
I'm a pre-order player with about 800 hours. I play this game like crazy for about 3 months a year with 3 month breaks in between these months of addiction. I'd be inclined to spend a less concentrated amount of time in the game if they just updated it like a proper game and the updates were properly interesting. But they aren't so playing a stupid amount for a month kinda keeps everything fresh
You can kind of view these dip feed up dates as the sleeping giant faze for sea of thieves before the fighting giant faze of the season and shroded deap
I actually only bought 3 black powder stashes and then left and took a break for a while and I actually did them not so long ago and it gives you a chest of rage and an ashen winds skull which is interesting

Either way, was too busy grinding alk the other voyages to care.

After Anniversary and them changing their schedule the game went massively downhill. Even now while I like the things Rare are doing they only give us content that last for a short while before you're like "ok now what" something I have wanted for ages was a World Update. Adding more wildlife and some dangerous (like boars and/or birds that attack you but drop decent meant) more dangerous plantlife and ocean life even if it's not interactable just something to make the world alive that isn't just skeletons. Also more regions, with the removal of Arena the sea dogs tavern is the perfect place to become a tortuga type of area where no killing is allowed and people just socialize or a biome all about the cold where you have to use fire to stay warm and skeletons that are frozen and can slow your movement with frost attacks. They have the technology and skills to do all of this is what shocks me
I feel if they made the sea dogs tavern a place where people can’t be killed it would just be used as a place for runners to be safe from pirates trying to get there stuff.

You know for example there is them shipwrecks on islands that don't have no purpose...yh Rare should put high value loot around the map for the explorers out there or the new players... You know like random lucky finds that pay out 20-30k What you think?
Doubloons are useless now and the new adventure disappointed me the only thing I liked in this 3 month update was the new athena stuff the ghost forts are just a easier version of the skull fort
I hate to admit it, but I haven't spend a single penny for microtransaction besides a battle pass or two, but Sea of Thieves I think I dropped 300 euro in Sea of Thieves the last 3 years

Personally, if I were Rare, I'd make these updates...1st Man of War 2nd instead of losing out loot if having to leave or shutting down servers, bury it in the ground and come back to retrieve it at a later session 3rd pets can fetch loot and swim it back or fly it to you 4th oops gotta work

I played once during merc voyages to get the merc hull, but otherwise I pretty much quit until the seabound soul.

They are relegated to skelly ships and throne spawns ar Shores of Gold

Even now while I like the things Rare are doing they only give us content that last for a short while before you're like "ok now what" something I have wanted for ages was a World Update. Adding more wildlife and some dangerous (like boars and/or birds that attack you but drop decent meant) more dangerous plantlife and ocean life even if it's not interactable just something to make the world alive that isn't just skeletons. Also more regions, with the removal of Arena the sea dogs tavern is the perfect place to become a tortuga type of area where no killing is allowed and people just socialize or a biome all about the cold where you have to use fire to stay warm and skeletons that are frozen and can slow your movement with frost attacks. They have the technology and skills to do all of this is what shocks me
I feel if they made the sea dogs tavern a place where people can’t be killed it would just be used as a place for runners to be safe from pirates trying to get there stuff.

Rare should put high value loot around the map for the explorers out there or the new players...

Doubloons are useless now and the new adventure disappointed me the only thing I liked in this 3 month update was the new athena stuff the ghost forts are just a easier version of the skull fort

I hate to admit it, but I haven't spend a single penny for microtransaction besides a battle pass or two, but Sea of Thieves I think I dropped 300 euro in Sea of Thieves the last 3 years

Personally, if I were Rare, I'd make these updates...1st Man of War
2nd instead of losing out loot if having to leave or shutting down servers, bury it in the ground and come back to retrieve it at a later session
3rd pets can fetch loot and swim it back or fly it to you
4th oops gotta work
