This Update Did Something Rare Never Did Again - Sea of Thieves
Today, we're discussing another updated from 2020, this time, the deceptively large Crews of Rage. I really enjoyed this update and was the last update before we started to hit hard with some of the best updates we've had so far.
Now, all we have to is wait until Season 8 in November...

An idea for a cursed chest could be a really heavy chest that makes you slower while carrying it, and makes your ship vulnerable by acting like a permanent ballast ball.
I mean, the treasure already slows you down enough
Or maybe it just randomly just breaks something like a wheel or mast
That's a pretty good idea
Chest of encumbering
Just a chest sized gold bar
Fun fact: each cursed chests have the faces of Greek gods. The chest of a thousand grogs is Dionysus, the chest of rage is Hephaestus, and the chest of sorrow is Poseidon. I find that pretty neat.
I study Greak Mythology as my job dnd I didn't notice that. I do think a chest theme around Artemis, or maybe do a Nyx chest that can only be picked up at night?
@@moonlightacid367 probably not only picked up at night. I'm thinking during the day if you pick up the chest it will make this haze around your character making it hard to see. However at night it will act like a normal chest.
the first thing that comes into my mind is a Zeus-Chest that acts like a magnet for lightnings. maybe even when there is no thunderstorm around
I would love more cursed chests. Maybe a chest that heals a player randomly. I just want some more weird content that helps add to the loot pool.
agreed. maybe even some positive effect ones just like the one about healing that you listed. it would encourage players to seek after certain chests and less skilled crews could have an advantage
A chest that crashes your pc by unloading a 700TB zip bomb.
@@Medved- ok
I had an idea of a Chest of Strom, if you have it on your ship it will make a storm cloud above you and you only with the compass and wheel jam aswell
a ballast chest that acts as a permanent ballast ball curse.
The pirate appearance potion was also for old pirates, as we didn't get such an extensive choice on our pirates look in the early years.
Truth be told, I've been playing for about a year now and have seen the pirate appearance potion in the emporium since I launched first. Not sure why it's being branded as 'new' at this point 😅
If I remember right, in the Sea of Thieves concept art book (which they pull from every now and then), there is a cursed chest that makes Kraken encounters more likely while its on your ship. I'd love to see that.
Perhaps they could add the kraken chest featured in the lore as a cursed chest. What does it do? Well, while it's on your ship, it'll intermittently let out a loud horn-like call akin to the sirens. each time this horn plays, there's a chance it'll spawn a kraken to attack your ship, which you can kill or try to escape from. it'd be worth a fair chunk of gold, due to how annoying it'd be to constantly get assaulted by krakens while it's on board, but it'd also be a very rare chest that you don't see very often as to not undermine it's value or the lore implications behind it. Plus much like a chest of sorrow, you could sneak it aboard an enemy ship and watch them get krakened constantly and take advantage of it.
Honestly Id just sit somewhere secluded and fight the kraken a bunch of times for the loot and commendations.
I adore fighting the Kraken so it'd be great to do it more often and have a way to facilitate it
I wish Rare took suggestions from fans because that's actually a really good idea 🤟
Ngl this sounds like a great idea. Not sure how easy it is to implement. As only one kraken can spawn in the world at one time if there is no world event. Though not officially a world event it basically is.
But I really would like to see the kraken chest sounds annoying as hell. Imagine stashing it on somebodys ship. 😂
@@Kligor2 no loot duh.
@@Kligor2 and it would be an easy hunter’s call xp farm lol easy money
I know this is probably gonna be hated by some people but, i'd love a "curse of the damned" version of the gunpoweder keg. My idea of them is that they couldnt be exploded by being shot at but they can't damage players, only ships. You could basically use them like the ghost fleet as mines to stave off someone pursuing you.
Now I’m thinking of a keg that can’t damage ships but has an absolutely massive radius in which it can hit players. That would be a super unique tool for pvp and hostage situations
A nuke
@@jackexp grapeshot kegs
I don't know we already have black powder kegs. I was in an alliance with some reapers to clear a fort of fortune and when they where headed back to sell a skeleton sloop showed up and attacked them while me and my buddy tried to intercept the Skelton sloop. one of the reapers tried to jump off the ship with a fortress keg to blow up the skeleton sloop. The skeleton sniper shot the fortress keg setting off both the black powder kegs as well sending both the reapers and the skeletons to davy Jones. weirdly I didn't see an explosion both sloops kinda merged for moment then the reaper sloop did a barrel roll shot underwater then popped back up and sank normally. God I wished I could've recorded that.
IMAGINE IF WHEN IT FLOATS IN WATER NOT BEING CARRIED IT WOULD SUMMON LIKE 6 OTHER GHOST KEGS AROUND IT MAKING IT A BIGGER HARDER TO DODGE TARGET
Honestly, I think Chest of Rage is _easier_ to deal with than Chest of Sorrows. At least as a solo player. You just put it on the prow, let it explode, and then put out the fire immediately, and then let it be until it needs to explode again, while the Chest of Sorrows requires you to keep bucketing until it stops crying, which can cause you to either crash or miss your destination.
Yeah, it's quite a hassle to deal with. I rarely get them and unless I'm really close to an Outpost, it's not even worth the trouble. Even then, I wait til it stops crying and then put it by the wheel. If it cries while I'm sailing, I just anchor and toss it over for 2m. I feel so exposed with one of them on board.
It would be nice if there was a little bit more variety in the cursed chests dept - I read some neat ideas in the comment section.
As a person who solo played Molten Sands fortress just last week for the first time, not only was the loot abysmal for the time spent (although going for Levels rather than gold) in a sloop you actually spend more time repairing the ship or not going back because the water is boiling or the volcanoes are erupting. The journey back to ‘safe’ waters, I.E for me The Wilds, was uneventful (thankfully) and the time it took to do I could of done 1-2 Ghost fleets instead for the same levels.
I think a "curse of phantoms chest" would be interesting and add to the nuisance causing variety of curses chests. Essentially every so often the chest will spawn a group of phantoms (varying by ship type, 4-5 for a galleon but 1-2 on a sloop so as not to completely overwhelm solo's) the phantoms could be the basic enemies we see in encounters, or take the annoyance up to 11 and have the ability to interact with ship stations. The phantoms would attack crewmembers, interact with and mess with the ship, like re aligning the sails, dropping the anchor, putting food on the stove, messing with trinkets and generally be annoying. You can either kill the phantoms individually or hit the chest repeatedly to vanquish them all at once.
Possible utility with this chest is that the phantoms would be hostile to everything around them and attack skeletons and ocean crawlers if they spawn nearby.
It would be cool to see ocean crawler and skeleton chests as well which would work like this. Maybe even shark and siren chests
- A cursed chest that leaks termites which would randomly eat your ships.
- Another one making your ship heavy (and your player slow as suggested by someone in comments)
- A radioactive one slowly damaging players nearby ?
- And it would be fun to have some sort of skelly treasure which would make skelly ships spawns after you to take it back (like the poseidon's trident in PotC). But ofc they shouldn't have much (or any) loot otherwise people would find a way to abuse it and farm them.
I really hope Molten Sands does become a FOTD style, on demand raidable experience, hell I’d love if unlocking the vault unlocked a dungeon to go fight a ghost of Flameheart or something. It’s just such a gorgeous fort, especially how well designed the beach is to make you feel like your sieging a huge encampment. I mainly just worry they’ll give in to the asks to just kill the volcanoes, I do want bigger reasons to visit the Roar, but killing the volcanoes would be so disappointing to me. Even without the gameplay I just love the spectacle
There could be a chest that occasionally spawns skeletons. There could be a chest that glows really brightly so you are super visible on the horizon. There could be a chest that makes sharks and sirens chase you around more often. There could be a mermaid chest that you would have to feed gems to keep alive until you sell it. Idk just some ideas
it's funny, they made only molten sands active and updated the forts vault for some reason just have a special place for the chest
I remember fighting over the fort, definitely wasn't fun at all
I still think those chests could have had cool unique voyages for them instead of our usual gold hoarder type of stuff
I was never that fussed about changing my pirate appearance... I guess I got lucky and picked a keeper! I totally agree about Molten Sands Fortress - desperately needs an update... I've only ever completed it once or twice and it is not in anyway worth the hassle... other times I've tried to go there the fort has despawned before I got there it's so far!
My Gallion will wear the Valiant Dawn Sails. They look even better on a Brig, with the front having shiny red and Gold frabic.
This was another update were I barely knew what I was doing. I'm always happy to find a Firebomb Crate. Good memories of PVP pyromania.
My wife and I did Molten Sands last night for the first time since this event. A Brig was there and sunk to the volcano, and it went off twice in a row. Totally not worth it. She started and I restarted with Seabound Soul so we did like this update, everything was new to us. I told her there wasn't fire when I played on Day 1 so it was pretty cool they updated it. I missed everything before this point though as I quit 2-3 months after launch. Actually watching a tuck video brought me back and been sneaking on ships ever since. Name is C Waffs, wife's name is Mama Marocco.
“Worshipped skeleton chest” where skelly boats will come after the chest every so often. Trying to get their chest back.
Hey I’m ShallowMuffin19, I’d like a obsidian six pack but I love your videos not only on lore but also the opinion of a veteran player like you and how much you liked each update and season; along with what could be better. thank you for making these videos!
I once got a chest of rage stuck in the side of my galleon where the ladder was which meant I just had constant fire
I like how early on he said chest of rage is the most annoying because sorrow will just be dropped off. There is a reason we drop the sorrow off; it's really annoying. Rage you can put at locations on the ship that mitigates the fire vs sorrow just floods your ship unless you are using the ladders.
I don’t remember any of the skelly lords having swords? 2:23
I started playing at the start of season five, so these videos are a great way to look back at what came before. Also, Hunters cry trailer in 4 hours!
Regards, OwnedTurtle030
I started playing sot before crews of rage but didnt know much about the game until coming back randomly during this very update. I had a lot of fun and a lot of good memories despite being a a fewer known one.
Briarboys
Thank you for the retrospective, I fondly remember digging up chests of rage at scorched pass as that has been the only reason to ever go there and have forgotten much about crews of rage since. Watching brought back many memories specifically regarding the fort situation.
A crab themed chest that can sprout little legs and skuttle away from pirates, or attempt to skuttle off the ship 🦀
More babysitting than chest of sorrow? Not even close. Sorrow cries for a while gotta keep bucketing and god forbid you get in a fight. Rage is far more manageable just put on the tip of the front. One bucket all you need.
I did the Molten Sands fortress for the first (and probably only) time as well the other day. As a solo, I didn't mind it because it was basically free, low risk-money, and I also found a skeleton pathing spot where I could use one firebomb to wipe out a whole wave. I like the idea of making it a new type of FoF full of Flameheart phantoms.
Those limited time quests sound like they were fun and a bit more interesting than the normal quests. There's so much potential with Captain's Voyages to bring stuff like that back - they could add them in between Adventures so they'll be limited time enough for people to hopefully fight over them and induce PvP, with Titles & Commendations with the names along the lines "Captain of Rage" or "Captain of Black Powder" to emphasise captaincy.
Crews of rage I have a fondness for. It was the update that brought me back from a hiatus and Molten Sands was a nice addition, even if I only used it once
The update was about 5 months before I ever played Sea of Thieves but I will say this (as someone who needs to sell 3 more stolen Chests of Rage), I never see people with them anymore.
I didn’t play crews of rage or maybe I did I just can’t remember lol great vid btw enjoy your time on holiday.
You’re spot on about Molten Sands fort, the best designed but the biggest pain in the behind! We definitely need new cursed chests types.
I wasn't an active player during crews of rage, but the lasting features are some of my favorites
BryTheBored
crews of rage was an ok update, i also think they should buff the loot at molten sands, it take way to long to sail to it just for a normal skull fort
Unfortunately, I didn’t have the game yet when crews of rage came out, but I very much enjoy all of the content that was added when I play
I'd argue that Reaper's Chests also count as cursed chests with the main difference being that the threat is PvP. Also there is a variant of the Chests of Sorrow called the Chest of Everlasting Sorrow that can be found in the Sunken Pearl tall tale which cries constantly rather than periodically.
I saw a skele fort spawn at molten sands once and it was a ton of fun to do, other than the part where we sunk twice.
CrispyBoxerdud
Sadly i didn't play yet when the update dropped. All of your videos on all the older updates are really amazing, like the contet keep it up!
PGenjiDude
Body change potion is good cause if you care enough about your pirate you’ve probably encountered Ancient skeleton
I skipped Crews of Rage, I was pissed about them not releasing enough stuff for PLs to do.
honestly 149 ancient coins is small enough where I feel like you could get that just playing the game if you really want it.
I bought one a few weeks into the game and I've never spent money on ancient coins
Also did the six packs already get given out or are they getting given out soon
I played crews of rage but didn’t remember it having so much content
We need more cursed chests, they can be annoying but they spice up gameplay when you find one. Also the Devils Roar needs some love in general, nothing gets added to it anymore
Enjoy the holiday gt: Scott9118
Can't believe that I've been playing SoT so long there's now nostalgic videos about past updates back when updates were sick
Well that's an upadate I totally missed and didn't play because I was on the academy but it sounded fun on paper
if i was to say what kind of cursed chest i'd want, is one that spawns skeletons or ghosts on your ship at certain times while on your ship
I did enjoy this update, molten sands was both the best and worst place for the fort. I have good memories fighting galleons for the fort, but getting airstruck by a meatball halfway through the fight really made it a chore.
The cosmetics were pretty good this time around, ashen dragon isn’t my thing but i remember splashing my doubloons on the wild rose set. Whenever I watch these videos I do feel bad for newer players who only know the black market as “HEY I HAVE A FAVOUR TO ASK” and some gold or ageing voyages for events people rarely participate in. I miss the days of Duke and the eager searching in the black market for the new very nice cosmetics being pumped out. Need I mention having something to spend doubloons on…
The chest of rage was a really nice touch giving us a dangerous bit of treasure or a tool to pull off some awesome plays with. A few more cursed chests wouldn't be amiss at the moment: maybe one forged in an adventure or mystery to liven the seas up a bit.
Great video as always and I cannot wait to see what people thought of Heart of Fire and the next updates beyond it.
(Oaf96)
I played crews of rage but since I didn’t play the game often I didn’t know there were new voyages I just remember seeing cool volcano fort aka my very first fort at the time and I saw a cool new skeleton lord and wasn’t even bothered by anybody cool experience loved the update
I actually like the idea of the beards and hairstyles from newbie sets being Pirate Legend exclusive. Now you can wear these full sets and not be mistaken for a new player. Also, I've just reached the title of PL yesterday and could finally complete the best set in the game that isn't DA - Parrot!
Lmao me hiding a chest of sorrows in a mean players sloop and just waited for him to sink he never knew
for the appearance potion: its 100% justified yeah you can spend money to get it fast but I've gotten a ton of ancient coins just by playing and I can buy like 4 of them without spending a dime
If you put the chest of rage on the nose of your ship it doesn't do shit.
a sunken curse themed pet would be nice.
I definitely remember this update. But it was out a bit before I was good enough to understand anything that it added lol
A chest of venom or something would be nice like it causes poison damage and unless you play music it will explode in poison like the chest of rage but with poison
I’d love a cursed chest where it spawns skeletons , ocean crawlers or phantoms onto your ship whilst sailing
I did play crews of rage, or most of the updates for that matter. I joined after arena closed which bummed me out since it seemed like something I would have enjoyed. Raven Birdbrain
This was the peak time for me when I played sea of thieves alot. Grinding the fort of fortune and doing the heart of fire tall tale with the obstacle course
They could do a chest that does 1 damage to your ship once a minute within a sphere around itself. Like if it's by the mast it could damage the mast, or maybe the decks below.
Wanted to see that mimic chest. Like it made a sort of copy of a crew member and would randomly mess with stuff like sails and wheel
Loved this update and still love the molten sands fortress. I spend a lot of time in the roar, it's my favorite zone.
Please tell me this is joke, please do.
@@moonlightacid367 Nah, travel times are shorter and the money is better. Volcanos are ez to deal with.
I started playing during Crew of Rage (i think, it were early pandemic times), and i quite enjoyed starting with the stuff in there - when i first caved and bought ancient coins i picked up the Reapers Heart Eye of Reach and Parrot, and i still have both to this day
(Gamertag: Blue Lava2015)
I joined during the Legends of the Sea so I am definitely bias for Crews of Rage with it being the my first, but it is in my top 5 favorite updates
I wasn’t around much for crews of rage (had to be off SoT for a while sadly) but coming back at the rear end of season six and learning about all of this stuff was definitely interesting to do and I an still somehow falling in love with this game. Keep up the good work on your content and enjoy your vacation! GT: Shotgun Shells5
A cursed chest that changed the direction/ height of the sails could make for an interesting challenge.
Wish I could of played when this came out feel like the moltensands rush would have been fun
Cream in oreo
Although I never played it it’s crazy how much came into the game and how much untouched potential the hideout items and cursed chests have
First, this video was really good I think you covered really just about everything 👏.
Second, this was the update that even months after release and no longer that popular I would do the chest digs and look for ashen tomes/chests like no tomorrow. I think I even did the fort once in that time. To me it was a really refreshing update because before that there was not much reason to go into the Devil’s Roar.
Well unfortunately for me I was a little burnt out at the time, it was one of the coolest voyage types and it's kinda shame I missed it
How about a chest that's made out of solid silver so its very heavy and you walk slowly with it, it also attracts lightning unless its below deck but it has a 15k price tag.
Crews of rage is pretty interesting was definitely fun driving around the devil's roar with 13 rage tests on the front constantly exploding one after another
Okay, but I do think you’re underestimating the chest of sorrows
It literally needs more baby sitting than the chest of rage, which you can leave at the tip of your ship and just forget about
Not to mention, it’s effects are easier to catch your attention with, and hence fix, unlike that of the chest of sorrows
i forgot i had a chest of sorrows on my rowboat and went for a rapid resource gathering on mermaid's hideaway. i returned to find my ship creaking and sunk before i could board it. wasn't even 3 minutes. the chest of sorrows sinks sloops so fast.
Legendary chest of wandering storm or something. Small storm that follows the storm.
I wasn't playing back then, but I'd love for more unique and flavorful updates like this. I'd also love for forts to be worth doing outside of FoF.
Would love to see one of these update retrospectives about the initial game release!
molten fortress was the best. awesome fort and way way better loot
Last time I did the molten sands fortress, the final boss got absorbed by the ground
I wasn't personally playing during Crews of Rage but I do like some of the things added. I intact drank a pirate apreance potion just 3 days ago after 2 years with my old pirate. Now we have season the 150 Ancient Coins are much easier to get free, so no more praying to RN-Jesus for Ancient Shelly's.
SoT username: The Lemon 01154.
(Also the first fort I tried was Molten Sands but I sank so quickly with my 6 day experience. )
I think the pirate appearance potion is fine. Honestly, I dont think they intended it to exist from the start but people didnt wanna lose progress so rare said
"Well we dont wanna make it trivial to choose your look so lets make it have to be a real choice to do it and we can even monetize it"
Doesnt seem bad to me tbh cause its real cheep so its for those who REALLY wanna change out while deterring those who'd just switch it up everyday
I think there should be a chest that whilst on your ship or being would do no damage but break your leg to slow you down
I'm new-ish to the game and love it! I started season 3. Most my friends have the obby six pack, and so I would really appreciate it.
Honestly prefer the Fearless bone crusher colors, but that may be because my last name is green. Lol
Hey I’ve been playing for 1700 hours now so I need this six pack to complete the sweat lord look!
I think another cursed chest would be a nice addition to the game. One I think will be fun and annoying would be to have one that will send an electric shot (A Chest of Shock). Don't know whether it should be at random or something a player can charge up like the Chest of Rage.
If a player is holding when it shocks, it will stun them either in place or have them move in a random direction for a bit. And if the chest is placed in water when it shocks, it will stun anyone within a radius of it (that includes sirens and sharks)
Keep the great content up my dude!
If I'm not mistaken wasn't the chest of Rage added in season 6 and not season 7 it's not a new cursed chest is it because I remember seeing it in season 6
Crews of rage was rough because of the volcano fortress being the only one but I did enjoy the new chest
Ajardoughnut632
Rare said in the beginning they want you to create a pirate and then build a story around it create your own character and you can't do that if you just change the person you are on a whim daily weeklier whenever no in real life you are you when you're stuck as you and you can't just become someone else that's so they were going for but enough people complain they were like fine here's a potion
I started playing in Season 3 so I missed out on these early updates and love this series of videos.
I've only done Molten Sands Fortress once since I was already in the area when it spawned. The treasure room is so far from the closest beach not to mention needing to keep an eye on your ship if the volcano starts to go off, it's not worth it.
Since there's so many ways to mitigate the Chest of Rage's curse without baby sitting it, it hardly feels like a challenge when finding one, like it should be.
I've never really hunted for the tomes and in the little over a year I've been playing I only have one left (Power 3) so I feel that pain of hoping for the last one every time I open an Ashen Chest.
I personally rock the Forsaken Ashes hair dye and I absolutely love it as it goes great with the bombardier set. The two tone dyes are some of the best imo.
ioNetrunner
In a game almost completely based around customization, not having at least some way to change your character was annoying. Even I've used an appearance reset potion, and I think they make total sense to have.
Ooooooh so that’s what that fort is for then. I was always wondering why it never seemed to activate for any fort event. I came in towards the end of season one so I never got to explore/experience this update. Dang sounds like it was fun too having to use the chest of rage to burn each of the skeleton lords. Well no matter, I still have to deal with the chest of rage either way so that’s fun.
Danger Kiwi
It thinks its still up but just never getting done. TBH me and my friend can get 100K an hour doing Sea Forts its just not worth it and not fun.
I still got all my raging shore voyages, I should do them one of these :p
I just recently got hooked on the game. These videos are great at telling me what I missed out on.
I think an interesting idea would be a cursed chest that shows reapers where you are at all times and is worth more if sold at reapers hideout
what about a chest that locked a random ship component (sails, cannon wheel, barrels) for a brief time. Preventing anyone from interacting with the aforementioned while the chest is on board your ship. It's reasonably manageable but can also end up being the straw that sinks your ship. "Chest of Stone" or somthing like that.
I started playing in the update after this one so I didn't get to do the exclusive voyages but I think the Molten Sands Fortress was a good addition, even if I forget that it exists 90% of the time lmao. And I really like the Chest of Rage, cursed chests in general are a very good idea imo, excluding the Chest of Sorrow, I've sank more times that I'll like to admit because of that bastard.
And I really enjoy your videos man, keep it up!
TheTrex081
I had 3 of the molten sands spawn in a row it was the most insane ring ever but yet still no shrouded ghost
Not sure that it's the best update, i remember when rare added skelly ships, that was amazing, also arena update, probably arena wasn't good, but that pvp changes were incredible like hits on masts, wheel and capstan, adding chainshots, blundies with that
