Weirdly, DW9 has actual defenders, and they squirmed like hell to discredit my criticisms, mostly saying it was my fault for not playing on Hard Mode.

It's almost as if changing the difficulty doesn't assist crippling game and level design mistakes. Huh.
Most games are lazy with difficulties anyway, change a few numbers and oh its harder. Only a few games (which i adore for it) actually alter level design for difficulty
Wasn't this the issue with DW8 as well tho? It was more like a numbers game and you can still break any officer by just mashing the correct element switches.

Because historically, during the warring kingdoms era, if a kingdom wanted weapons beyond swords and spears for their army they needed to buy them as DLC

It's a beta, trust me.. It's just you have to pay for the beta, and there's no compensation for playing it, just wait until DW9 XL or Empires comes out, no guarantee it'll be amazing, but it'll be an improvement.

The game isn't as bad as everyone makes it look, not saying it's a good game, but it's actually better than people say.. Glitches and stuff is rather normal for many games. At least it doesn't crash every 5 minutes like other games, and there's a lot of smaller details that show a lot of effort actually went into the game. Just not in some of the core stuff that matters, in short: most of the effort went into the wrong place. This game is actually enjoyable. It's just hard to enjoy anything if you just join the hate wagon.
But Jim, clearly you didn't turn the brightness up to 100% and then down to 0% and then back up to 100% and then turn on colourblind mode and then spin the control stick 3 times clockwise and 2 times counterclockwise and then turn on two PS Moves and perform a flawless rendition of the Smooth Criminal dance and then turn off Hi-Rez Graphics to unlock Super-Ultra Tough Mode! That's the real way they intended you to play the game!

I completed Fire Emblem Warriors in 6 hours, felt burned, and had no reason to play it again.
I didn’t care much for the combat of Fire Emblem: Warriors -because i’ve been spoiled fucking rotten by playing Kingdom Hearts recently- but I genuinely loved how I was able to give my AI buddies commands -even though they didn’t always listen-

TheRAMBO9191 Their games are no where near as bad as you make them out to be. They have highly polished gameplay mechanics. The only issue is that their games can feel samey and a bit buggy.

Who can critique Sterling on a DW game? I think he is the only Critic that has been an advocate for the series since before Hyrule Warriors made it "popular" to other critics.
i don't agree with jim a lot, but if jim knows anything about video games, it's about dynasty warriors. i can't help but agree with every single point he's made about it.

I can, I have played all of them apart from DW7XL. I am not going to though as he is absolutely spot on about the desires of the fanbase. Dynasty warriors has always looked bad, but the glitching was kept to a minimum because the maps were small.
I'm really not digging the voice of Mr Burns. I have to take it on his impression, but I know exactly what he means by dynasty warriors 3 having some cheesy lines. Also the doubling up on weapons is normal for a first title, but is always annoying to see. The weapons are always a part of the personality of the general, and I would have rather seen some generals turning back generic than having the same weapon reused again on special officers.
The question is what can be done ? I feel like they are running out of steam on this enterprise. That's why it has been 3 years since empires. I personally am starting to get bored about all the scenarios and I fear the fanbase in general might be as well.
If they wanted to see a mode similar than they should have used the officer mode in DW5 (XL?). In that you start out with 3 attacks and use gold to upgrade your character. Hard mode really doesn't look hard enough. It would have been nice to have a battle in an open world that took a long time to complete, and while this was happening other officers were doing more important battles you had no control over. Or perhaps put in the duel mechanic from DW4. Ah I am ranting, still unless Jim is a god at this game then I assume it is far too easy to have fun. The fun is either in the challenge or in the mayhem, and there is no mayhem to be had in this game.
Goron1988 I played Guan Yu as my first character in DW9 started on hard eventually went to chaos. It took me almost 50 hours to complete his story. I really like this game but obviously it could be a lot better I'm hoping they update it through the months though. Empires for this game will be awesome as long as they improve on this system. It does suck that this game is getting a lot of backlash but it's understandable. I like the new combat system and I think all the clones are semi clones they don't share every single attack which is nice obviously
It's been a weird experience for me. I've been a fan of it since DW4, but I've been pretty quiet about the series since nobody else ever seemed to like it, ever, even when Orochi and DWG2 came out, but now nobody seems to really hate it anymore. How times have changed.
So that problem where models glitch through hills? That's caused by the game not knowing how to make models treat hills as flat planes to rest on. So when a model stops or tries to move up a hill, rather than treating it as an incline, which would force them to program a model that could account for that, it instead treats it as a set of stairs almost. So every time the model stops, it readjusts to the horizontal plane, making it clip through/float in the air like that. It's usually used for player characters or two legged characters, but obviously when applied to anyone or anything with a wide base, the effect is them either clipping through the ground or floating in the air because the model literally doesn't know how to respond to an incline. That used to be a major issue like, six years ago, but that's inexcusable for a major title to have now.
I think Super Mario Sunshine did not have this issue and that game is over 20 years old.
Granted Sunshine was not an Open World game but for the time it was beautiful. Still is one of the best looking games of all time.

nah, DW6 are way better than this game. dw6 dont look like asset flip and their design look like an upgrade from the previous dw, hell dw6 lu bu armor in my opinion is the best looking, he looks like a demon there, and hard as fuck.
I agree with ya there I forgot about Lu Bu's costume from that game it was the best! Actually that was that games best strength. Most of the costumes were pretty sweet.
This does look like an Early Access title. The lack of any transitional animations makes it appear that it's just store bought assets plunked onto a map. Those wolves look like they took Unity_Zombie_43 and replaced it with Arctic-Wolf ($25 on Unity store)

On previous entries you have to conquer at least the key bases so the main enemy camp would open
And even in the missions where you could run straight to the boss, they gave you a reason not to. If you run straight to the boss, enemy ambushes would devastate your forces, or assassins would kill your leader. A good warriors game has you running around too busy trying to put out fires to just charge in with no strategy.

I have put literly thousands of hours into the dynasty warriors series, the only game that forced you to take bases was 6. The rest allow you to run to the end and finish it and if you were good enough it was never that punishing

Um no a lot of times there were walls in the way, dudes in the way, or the main guy wasn't even there until certain events happened. Heck dynasty warriors 6 more than the others let you run to the end without waiting since you could just manually smash through gates to get to the boss. I remember the battle for Hulao Gate you could legit just sprint past everyone, smash the gate to the castle yourself, bitch slap Lu Bu, and instantly kill Dong Zhuo and win without waiting for anything, you had to be a high level to do it but you could do it easily.
The idiots who ragged on Jim because he wasn't playing on "HARD MODE" pretty much failed to grasp the concept of what a GOOD game is: YOU DON'T NEED HARD MODE TO MAKE THE GAME "BETTER". If NORMAL MODE catches your interest in wanting to play the game non-stop, then HARD MODE only "ENHANCES" the overall experience of what a good game is - it doesn't make the game "better", only HARDER. HARD MODE is not a mode like "NEW GAME PLUS" that adds to the content. HARD MODE is supposed to be a challenge when you've already gotten the nuances of the normal game down pat and want to see how far you can go with a high difficulty setting. When I think of games with "HARD MODE", I think back to a game called Ninja Gaiden (for XBOX, the original system): having beaten the normal mode where everyone wants to kill you then switching to HARD MODE where everybody and their grandma wants to fucking OBLITERATE you with ONE HIT.
DW hard mode and up boils down to artificial difficulty spikes to make it hard, at least in my experience.
Yeah, sadly hard or "chaos" modes in these games have never really been exactly harder, just more grindy. Yeah, enemies can hurt you for more, but the main issue is that they just have a ton of health and take forever to smash down. I often only really play on Hard or Chaos when it's an unlock requirement for weapons and such. Because I don't find taking 5 minutes to kill one officer and their ridiculously inflated health bar to be fun.
Difficulty settings are a dated concept frankly. Players cannot be expected to know how they would best experience a game without having already played it. When I was young I tended to keep games on normal difficulty because when I started on hard I'd get destroyed.
Now I tend to start on hard because it actually forces me to learn the details of the game and I tend to get far more out of it. I missed entire interesting game systems because I had decided that losing didn't seem fun. So their impulse isn't necessarily wrong. I also understand in the context of DW because the recent ones were downright boringly easy on normal.
Honestly requiring higher difficulty settings for game systems to even matter is bad design, but it's also ubiquitous. I was really hoping dark souls might have shown that there are benefits to going with only one difficulty setting, but it seems few others caught on.
The "hard mode" shit just makes the enemy longer to kill, hence more tiring and tedious with nothing rewarding at the end. Just another task... Then rinse and repeat 🤦
Honestly, Jim, I think the people who're telling you "you're playing it wrong!" are, at this point, just grasping at straws to justify the quality of the game. I've been watching you for about a year now but only a few months ago did i find that you were not only a fan of Dynasty Warriors (your Godseekers video, I believe), but a fanatic, like me. What they don't get, as you said, you're one of the only vocal defenders of the series in video game journalism. I just find it ironic that people bash you for liking Dynasty Warriors, and now they're bashing you for NOT liking a Dynasty Warriors game. Fucking classic.
Oh I see your problem now, it's actually pretty obvious. What you did wrong was turning on the game when it's best played turned off and uninstalled from your system.
It's almost like the game's problems are fundamental and beyond a mere increase in difficulty.
Are you talking about DW9 or all Warriors games? I like them, but this could be used to describe any of them.
It can go both ways, IMO, though there are issues in DW9 that require both extra patching and maybe another expansion or spin-off (even if those still won't work for Jim, they might convince other players to come back if they see there's more options or better content involved).
I can't speak for Jim, but I'm guessing his issue is largely with the lack of care with which the game has been constructed. If they want to make something different: cool, they've 'sort' of done that before. But the game seems to have an air of lazy incompleteness. I mean, I can see HOW it got like this: they have zero experience with open world games and RPGs and they aren't exactly known for quality to begin with. But, if you aren't good at it and the final product turns out badly, series pedigree means very little.
That said, you could DEFINITELY do this to other games in the series. It has long-standing issues with AI, pacing, story, difficulty and presentation. This just takes all those flaws and exacerbates them by scaling back what made it stand out and stretching it out over a massive map.

beniboy well imagine this, those moments that you're forced into moving across the map for 2-5 minutes at a time with no combat were the parts that I hated in the earlier games, they were "emptier" battle grounds, but there were usually enemies and skirmishes all over, but that was because keeping a horse was boring and bland, if you had one, sure, 5 minutes became like 1 or 2, but mounted combat besides elephants was so bad, and you couldn't call one, and now, WITH horses on demand being added in the later gens, it's a "main feature" to have empty 5 minute country scenic moments

I'd personally apply hunting to the older game style by having an inexplicable army of tigers or bears suddenly leaping into an area, attacking both sides and have it as a contest of which side kills the most to get morale or food buff to the winning side. Something that interrupts the fight in an area and draws your attention for a possible reward.
I wanted to buy this game as my first Dynasty Warriors experience. Glad I saw this video first (THANK YOU JIM!)
"Xtreme Legends Dynasty Warriors 8 Complete Edition" is the one I will get instead.
No get DW8 empires; you can at least make your own characters in that one. I dunno; I just like Empires partly better. Or ANY of the animu spin offs as well.

Thing is I've only played Hyrule Warriors, but it's one of my favorite games on the Wii U. I've clocked 200 hours, and I'd actually love to throw another $60 at this game to get the Switch 'Definitive Edition' IF and ONLY IF it has a save transfer. :P I wanted to see what the main series was like so I picked it up.
That said I must say Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Edition is a good bit of fun, but in some ways the caveats to the fighting I felt in Hyrule Warriors seems to be exacerbated a bit. Such as blocking being kinda slower and the dodge mechanic which was so useful in Hyrule Warriors is absent.
And unfortunately, as I have the PC version, it is a pretty lazy port. All controls are referenced via keyboard, and the original presets for the controller (only detects if you plug it in before turning on game) are not even what they are on console. Plus button bindings are listed for any generic controller (listings including J5, B4, etc. so you have no idea what it's set to just by looking at it). Definitely a far-cry from the kind of love seen in PC versions of DOOM and GTA V.
Plus it came out for last gen, current gen, and PC, and thus is also apart of what a few games released in 2013, 2014 suffered from; current consoles looking very near-last gen in performance. High settings on my PC? Still doesn't look as good as Hyrule Warriors on the Wii U. It looks and feels like an XBOX 360 game, not a PS4 one. [But differences were so large, they and many other games at the time had to do this to get the same game on both systems]
Wow. I ranted for a while, haha! It has it's caveats and it's crashed on me twice, but this kind of gameplay I find addicting and it's been a good bit of fun, 7 hours in and I can see spending a bit more.
Empires is trash. it's not a typical DW games. it has like a board game type of feel to it. dont get that shit.
I recommend Samurai Warriors 4 Empires. I’ve played most DW games since DW4 (on PS 3&4), and this one is my fave.
DW is still the best CoOp game ever. And you should be able to score a 2nd hand copy of SW4E for about $20.
"Open world" aka "Barren world" just some shitty trees and some ground you (mostly) won't clip through and occasionally there's someone you can hit X at until they leave! Wow modern gaming at it's hight.

There are a handful of games that are like that. I found Skylanders was insultingly easy to the point of being boring on normal mode, but was decently challenging and fun in hard mode. Which makes sense, with it being a kids game. DW doesn't have any excuse.
God this game breaks my fucking heart. I'm just glad I've got my Warriors Orochi games. Speaking about the games feeling like grand scale battles? Remember in Warriors Orochi 3 when you start the final battle at the foot of a castle side-by-side with Susano-o, the God of Storms, and you *have* to fight your way through the palace to open up the path to the final fight, with giant fucking serpent heads breathing fire and shit at you as an army of demons keep flooding out of the woodwork? Me too. Good times... good times...

In all my years I've never seen a game damage the only thing it's really known for to such a degree. The game is all about hacking through endless waves of enemies. How could they of possibly thought it was a good idea to reduce enemy amounts and space them out to so much?
There are a bunch of peon captains with multiple health bars they probably thought we wanted to fight. Even named officers you just skip and walk over to the main officer because there is no point, there's no stage structure anymore so it isn't even implied there's a point to fighting them, their troops don't even run away like the older games if you do.

They did indeed, and there's no patch for the graphics issues.
Apparently the Chinese dub wasn't supposed to be available on steam (licensing issues or something? idk), but there was a work-around to use them since the files were still there. Though now the patch removes the ability to use them at all.
Someone found another work around on the Steam forums, but at this point they should just license it and add it into the game. The rating is down to 15% for all Languages and 44% for English reviewers on Steam, and I dont' doubt that the Chinese language removal tipped that scale /hard/ because it was at 30% for all Languages yesterday.

I remember making a comment on one of the reveal trailers that showed the platforms that would support this game, and the Vita wasn't included. I said I was disappointed by that fact. And was jumped on by people who said " do you expect a game with this kind of graphics to run on a Vita!?" And after seeing actual footage of the game...yes. It should. It would probably run on a PSP, to be honest.

One thing that would be fairly easy to do in order to make the battles better is to resemble a little more real battles, meaning: giving orders to sections of your army to do things, protect them and ride with them like a general and only have access to the other army's general in case some conditions are met as: a percentage of the enemy's army is vanquished, or certain portions of the map are taken (like raising a flag in some FPS games). In this case it would not only matter to protect a certain VIP, but it would need leadership skills and your army skills (something that in this case would really be more inovative for DW, like improving not only bodyguards, but your army because it would matter to the battle if they succed or not).
People are making such crazy excuses for this game. It's complete garbage. There is a reason this game is getting panned left and right.
we need to be able to admit when our favourite franchises are being ruined, because defending it will not 'protect' the franchise and make them 'make a good game later' defending Andromeda wouldn't have helped, defending Destiny 2 dosnt help, because they would just continue making shit,
+TotemicToad I haven't seen enough on Andromeda to conclude it was a bad mass effect game except for some of the cringey hipster dialogue and characters I've seen in the game. As for Destiny....is that even a good franchise? Seems to me pretty much like Borderlands but only with the content of a single region, none of the gun design, a more limited progression system and spread thin and locked behind microtransactions.
Andromeda suffered from using an engine (frostbite) that was not optimised for the kind of animation work that an rpg type game needs, it had a thoroughly inconsistent tone in that it was billed as light hearted exploration but has a main plot of HOW WILL WE SURVIVE IN THIS HOSTILE GALAXY!? it had arbitrarily inserted microtransactions and multiplayer, dialog so terrible my face is tired from,,, everything, it was decidedly mediocre across the board
as for destiny, the original had a core following of people who loved the game, not owning a console I never played D1 but the raids seemed ingenious with a mix of platforming puzzling and gunplay a lot of people say D1 nailed its gunplay to be good and solid, and Taken King finally brought a level of story and 'more' to make it truly good (they then fkd up Rise of Iron to most people in going from finally good to back to mediocre) then in D2 bungie essentially chucked out almost every bit of 'progress' they had made since Taken King and even did things even more bland generic and empty than D1 with guns and shaders being less varied, less interesting etc, this has really upset the fanbase,
and now Dynasty Warriors 9 has done a similar thing in being noticeably, provably, less than its predecessors in elements that are core to what makes the series itself,

Eh, he'll probably hate that it's DLC (even if we've always got XL or whatever expansions before) and, while it may objectively improve some things (there will be extra weapons but not all the removed ones, because it's not that simple if you really got into the details of how the game plays now), it won't totally move away from the concept or fill the open world with stuff. So it's clear Jim, who hates both playing and seeing this game in action, will not like it anyway.

If you enjoy this game, that's perfectly fine and we're cool with that. However, telling people that they aren't playing on the right difficulty or that our PCs are crap/blowing things out of proportions isn't cool. How the game plays is subjective but, the game objectively has performance issues.

Can't say you like the game without people calling it garbage, crap and the only way that someone could possibly like this game is that they are forcing themselves or they are just plain stupid. And then people expect them to just take it without retaliating or being upset. People who don't like this game should learn to respect those who do like the game and vice-versa. To say that this game's allowance of the player to grappling hook their way immediately to a boss objective is either comparable or identical to gameplay in other mainline numbered entries in the franchise shows a total absence of experience and expertise of the previous games. In prior games you would come upon a fortification with a locked gate you could NOT bypass until you killed a nearby officer. Only then the gate would open, you enter the fortification and battle 1 or more enemy characters. Only after their defeat does the back door to the fortification open and you can proceed further into the map towards the primary objective. Furthermore there were often gates or tunnels/caves or what-have-you that infinitely spawned enemy reinforcements which would prevent your allied officers and characters from advancing towards the primary objective if you didn't kill the defending officer to cut off the reinforcements. While usually optional, it would make the primary objective boss more challenging to not have any allies present to distract mobs around the boss who could interrupt your combo or shoot you with arrows, etc., that could get you killed at higher difficulties. The maps in former games were very much designed to gate (pun intended) you from going directly to the boss in many cases and, as Jim said, encouraged you to want to conquer the entire map to see it all turn a beautiful blue with your armies routing the enemy entirely off the map. Only rarely, such as a dwindling time limit, would you make a directly beeline to the boss to kill him at the expense of all other objectives.
Jim Sterling it occures to me that the best way to illustrate how profoundly a failure this is is to compare it to the Dragon Quest Warriors. Why? because both games are examples of an attempt at taking a game that had a previous set shtick and make it into an open world dynasty warriors. I want people to realize that Dragon Quest Warriors 2 did a better fucking job at being an 'open world dynasty warriors' than fucking DW9 did! AND IT WASN'T EVEN A TRUE OPEN WORLD GAME!
Dynasty warriors is abandoning the one fucking genre their good at for such a half assed attempt at a game. I'm all for trying something new but when you do that you NEED to make damn sure that your able to at the VERY least maintain the same level of polish as the previous game.
I watched both of your videos Jim and one thing is abundantly obvious. The AI animals and soldiers act JUST like the ai in previous warriors games. Which fucking surprise does NOT transplant to a place that isn't a seris of defined stage tiles and evolving objectives. The magic of Dynasty warriors of the past was their ability to be both terrible and great. It was a brainless hack and slash but you could get pulled into it! Whether it was the varied roster of characters or the challenges to complete in stages or hell, just the joy of rounding up massive numbers of soldiers and then obliterating them.
Sorry for the long response but I was a late fan of Dynasty Warriors(technically fell most in love with the Gundam variants) and I was looking forward to having that nice simple,enjoyable dynasty warriors experience until your videos enlightened me to the freshest pile of revolutionary shit that is DW9.

It is more like cognitive dissonance. Meaning when you make a decision (or purchase) you later seek to justify it to make yourself comfortable with what you gave up, here money of course. Which means you will sometimes fail to see reality as it is because you're trying to convince yourself you made a good purchase. It is basic human behavior. Though I guess some people are more delusional about it than others.

Except, I have dynasty warriors 8 extreme legend and dynasty warriors 8 empires and I thought it was a *downgrade* from dw6, which I thought was a *downgrade* from dw4!
In dynasty warriors 8 I didn't feel like I was fighting an army, I felt like I was fighting pockets of magically appearing and disappearing mannequins. And I was fighting them in small and sparse maps that lacked any and all complexity.
In dynasty warriors 4, the yellow turban rebellion was something like 3 or 4 maps and a hidden one as well. Dong Zhuos rebellion was another few maps. There were nearly ten dense stages before you even reached where we could say the three kingdoms era actually started!
In dynasty warriors 8, there were maybe three stages in total in that same place. At least dw6 had stages vary based on what character you played, unlike dw8 where it absolutely doesnt matter.
I guess I'm saying I could imagine an awesome open world dynasty warriors game, but I cant imagine one made by the dynasty warriors dev's of today.

The only thing decent about this game is the story, which is told over and over and over again already. So I can't be emotional invested compared to other games.
I'd argue the combat system takes a bit of a while to understand but is also decent. I can't force you to like it, but I like the flexibility it provides even if there are only 30 or so different movesets.

Some games do get better with a difficulty boost because they ten to ask you to do more with their mechanics. DW9 sounds like it just asks you to have the patience of a saint though...

I am a longtime fan and was arguing with a defender, eventually realised they hadn't even played the game, then they accused me of not understanding the 'creators intentions' to show us Chinese temples and mountains. My draw dropped, I'd never interacted with the community but they are beyond help.

15 hours in and ive enjoyed every minuite of it in spite of some of its issues, only real issue I see is that the AI can sometimes be a bit buggy such as tigersa not attacking you. Otherwise, any other issues are the same issues you get with every new DW game, loss of some characters weapons for example.
I feel you're not giving enough attention to Sterdust. I mean, it's friggin' awesome and deserves everyone to see it, and you should give some links at least in description to your appearances. Not that it's that hard to search up of course, I just feel you could send some more attention, because Sterdust and the entire show in general is so goddamn entertaining to watch.
Its not really an "open world" its just a normal dynasty warriors map with 10X extra space added between the interesting parts. Shame!

+Lu Bu -- No, the divisiveness isn't over that there aren't enough of white men in the cast and male leadership roles aren't respected enough. Having a long sidequest with an Asian woman wouldn't be a problem in a Dynasty Warriors game.
Even in stages on older games where you could just walk up to the boss outright, that tended to be risky when you're not only surrounded by grunts left and right(with better AI than what I'm seeing here), but the fact that other officers might close in on you for triggering the encounter without defeating them first.Nevermind that even on horseback there was a chance someone could force you out of it when passing by them in narrow routes. You know, pretending on actually trying to defend their leader with SOME semblance of a tactical approach.

I've not played a warriors game in a while, but I kind of remember them jumping that high in every game; I also recall it being some sort of AoE impact, supposedly to help you get into a mob.

not 100% necesarily true. It's entirely possible for a game to be balanced around what ended up being hard mode, but then being dumbed down for "normal" after focus group complained it was too hard, or something, So, game's perfectly fine on hard, but overly consolidated on normal. It just doesn't apply in this case... or most cases. But does in some cases.
I suppose it could be argued that if you remove the challenge the game might lose something, but telling someone they played it wrong is pretty dumb. You could suggest it might be more fun played another way, and you might even be right, but I'd also argue if the game was better I'd be more likely to play it 'the right way'.

I bought this. First 10 minutes. Game froze. This game is honestly fucking horrific. I used to LOVE this series, but this game is beyond fucked. It's awful. I'll take the shitty trade in price for this awful waste of money. I don't know how Koei Tecmo had the audacity to ship this as a "finished" product.
14% positive reviews and 86% negative reviews on Steam? Well that's just sad that there still people who find this to be an acceptable quality.
Many of those reviews are complaining about the weird (licensing issues?) lack of Chinese voices in the PC version (at least by default) though, so not exactly the same as this video.
I'm way too lazy to double-check, but I remember even the positive reviews saying things like "I have very mixed feelings about this game"
Even the people who liked it were hesitant to endorse it.
