    Well... there's a reason why Koei is jokingly refer by us Chinese as 'Dark Shame' (Koei's Kanji can be translated into 'Light Glory' in Chinese).

      I'm really sad to say I don't know who first came up with the name. Although it was first 'Dark Glory' and then as Koei begin to go lazier and lazier (or in DW9's case, blatantly discriminating to Chinese consumers when they disabled Chinese text) it eventually became Dark Shame.

    True Dynasty Warriors Anecdote:
    My and my bro have been playing Dynasty Warriors since 2. We played all of them, including any and all of the variants, like Dynasty Tactics, Empires and so on. We always viewed Warriors as a mindless (but addictive) hack & slash - and there was a certain amount of fun once you payed attention to the battle map; of clearing pathways to allow your army to progress and it culminating in a huge end fight.
    Then we randomly had the opportunity to go to China - anywhere we wanted. Knowing absolutely nothing about China other than Tiananmen Square Tank guy; our only other thought was "How about seeing some of the Three Kingdoms Stuff?".
    So we went and saw things like Zhuge Liangs tomb; A stone carving purportedly chiseled by Cao Cao himself; The Peach Tree Garden where the 3 Brothers swore their oath; There's even a recently opened Three Kingdoms themepark.
    As the tour guides were taking us around - we'd see familiar characters from the Dynasty Warriors franchise ; the characters are based on their statues ; "Oh look - It's Guan Yu - that spear is Blue Dragon - his horse was called Red Hare - And there's his sworn Brother Zhang Fei - He was famous for holding the Bridge at Chang Ban while Liu Bei fled with his peasant army away from Cao Cao's superior forces" ; The tour guide looked shocked and said "That's ... all correct! How do you two westerners know so much about Chinese History?!" ; I was too embarrassed to say "Oh, some shitty japanese hack & slash computer game" - so I just said "We have an interest in the Three Kingdoms era".
    It's surprising how much history you can learn accidentally by osmosis.

      except a lot of that stuff is just myth/legends that people actually believe. and the hard part is telling to what degree its false. like Zhang Fei did hold the bridge at Chang Ban, he had a group of 21 elite cavalry and held a choke point, but eventually destroyed the bridge and retreated too.

    Dynasty Warriors and realism don’t mix. I mean, the games have a single person take down entire armies; that doesn’t seem very realistic to me.

      In older DW, especially 2 it was harder to take as many enemies as the more recent games. But yeah, even then you still could take down many many soldiers or officers for one guy. In DW8 a guy uses a god damn boat as a weapon. There are guys with ice, fire or lightning attacks. They pretty much gave up on full realism but then they suddenly want to do a game with more "realism".
      But you can still take loads of people down at once (with more easy than in DW8 even, thanks to the braindead AI for the most part), use special attacks that are pretty much the opposite of realism...
      So in short I don't really see what's the problem with no realism. I really only saw "realism" as an excuse for Koei to remove weapons they could have kept (like tonfas...) and to justify a lot of other problems.

    • @cam-a-lot1973
      @cam-a-lot1973 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I could view Silent Hill 2 as entertaining cuz' of those reasons bruh. And sure War of Mine is 'entertaining'. I may be splitting hairs here but entertainment is entertainment regardless of whether its doing so through fun, fear, thrills, long artistic panning shots of scenery, lore in your face, lore you have to dig through, gameplay mechanics that make you feel uncomfortable with your choices or easily telegraphed heroic choices with no consequences. An example of something I'd consider as not entertaining is Steven Seagel's 'The Foreigner', whereas Steven Seagel's 'Undersiege' is entertaining. As long as its not 'boring'. War of Mine may not be traditional entertainment, but it is definitely not boring, so I count it. I know I'm ranting hardcore over nonsense but after 27 years on this Earth I value 'entertainment' over things such as originality if you could believe that~

    If they really wanted Dynasty Warriors to be open world, they would need something like this:
    Rather than playing as a historical character, you make your own. The "open world" shouldn't be just a mission area but bigger, all of China should be open for you to explore. You start the game during the Yellow Turban Rebellion, as a nobody. You can fight bandits, assassinate people, help local lords suppress rebellions, or help rebels overthrow their oppressors. As you become more and more famous, the various factions, like Wei, Shu, and Wu, will try to recruit you to serve in their army. Along the way, you can even choose to switch sides if you want (with consequences of course), and along the way, you will meet all the various Dynasty Warriors characters. Also, defeating a particular main character grants you access to their weapons, armors, and powers.

    What's worse is the "Realism" excuse was a blatant lie from the get go, as Suzuki eventually confessed it was due to running out of time as to why certain weapons were dropped from the previous game to this one. You know, that thing that the fans were pretty much proclaiming from the moment the "realism" excuse ever came to light? I'm more angry that they thought they could feed people a bullshit excuse like that and not just be honest that they spent too much time and effort on the Open World Mechanic, which is your run-of-the-mill variety and brings nothing interesting to the concept like Horizon Zero Dawn did. Of course, why launch a completed game when you can weasel more money out of the player base by selling new weapons later on down the road? So, even the whole "we ran out of time" excuse is bullshit, because we know it's to get more money with minimal effort.

    This stings me very hard personally, cause I have friends working at Koei Tecmo, friends I have known since college, and that was a while ago. A lot of the consensus they provided was that the higher ups have a strong "resting on their laurels" mentality, and there is an unofficial divide within company culture, between the Japanese speakers and non-Japanese speakers. Changing a culture will not be easy, but I pray hard that Koei Tecmo and Omega Force can turn things around, cause I like their games and the company itself, even if I am not always supportive of some of their policies.

I dont think Jim realizes a video like this wont change their minds and can only hurt us die hard fans. I say leave them alone and embrace anything they release. As any fan of any series, your not gonna like everything released. But hey, i say more content is always a good thing. Id rather have "more" than "nothing" to be honest.

    • @Nedoxu
      @Nedoxu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think the point he's making is if we stop giving them money, a very likely outcome is that they will just stop making video games entirely, which would be good for _no one,_ including people who don't like their games right now. He's saying that Japan will see the lack of sales and say "Well I guess fuck them, they don't want our games anymore" and cut us off. That's the point he's making. This has happened so often to franchises I love, and I can totally see where he's coming from with that, even if I don't necessarily agree.

    Why the hell does everything need to be open-world these days? Why can't more developers go for the incredibly superior "open-level", a la Deus Ex and Thief? It's got the best of both worlds; handcrafted design on every inch of it, while still being large enough and content-filled enough to scratch that itch for exploration.

    • @JojyAsmir
      @JojyAsmir 6 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      I think the reason for the lack of "open-level" games is actually pretty simple. They require effort. Anyone with enough free time and no design skill can cobble together a big landscape and plop down random buildings on it; a Deus Ex style level requires you to actually plan out routes, place pickups and characters at sensible locations, and have some degree of artistic cohesion to make it not be terrible.

    • @sebastiankrant2738
      @sebastiankrant2738 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well, partly, because this is a more predictable thing to do: If you have an "open-level" thing, you need to look after pacing, size and balance carefully. However, also because its safer: There was a time and still is a certain desire for games to be open world because it meant more investment. More to do. Many people dont buy that many games and an open world game appeals to them on the ground that they get a lot of time for their money, which might be better for them than a more enjoyable but shorter experience. Especially in their purchase decision. With an open world there comes a certain security: You get XYZ out of the game. With streamlined levels, there is a risk involved: Will I like it enough to be worth it? More so, there is a risk for the developer in terms of desing: How do I design my level for the maximum amount of enjoyment? Its a variable. With open world you can simply say: Shitton of stuff in there, people can do as much as they like. Plus, the open world busywork is again very safe: Everyone got a lot of generic stuff to do, rather than a few extremly engaging stuff, that might not be to their liking. So all in all: Safe, secure, precise and you get what you pay for - usually in good quality. In exchange its also bland, simplistic and not innovative. Which reminds me of a newspaper article about germans games industry: "German games are like german washmachines. Working? Great. Entertaining? No. Thats why we are famous for our cars and our games are stupid. " I think we can safely replace german with "open world" here.

      Open world tends to boost review score in western media. The contrast between Jim’s hatred and other media’s warm reception, paid or not, is the proof of this.

    Considering how Tecmo-Koei sells so many tiny packs of DLC that they might as well be microtransactions, I was incredibly surprised to learn something about Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends: Definitive Edition on the Switch.
    Unlike the so-called "Complete Edition" on Steam, the Switch version's "Definitive Edition" title *isn't* bullshit! The game costs $40 and comes with practically all of the content that's been carved out for DLC in every other version, with no available DLC itself on the Switch's eShop.
    Seriously, I had to research that many times over because I just couldn't believe it, given Tecmo-Koei's recent history. But ever since I confirmed it and decided to buy the game, I've been pretty damn happy with it. It's a shame that this'll probably be the last time that this longtime DW fan gets to be this happy with Dynasty Warriors, if the dumpster fire that is DW9 is any indication.

They could have made D.W. 9 amazing, actually put time money and effort in to it, and had people like me buy it simply because of good word of mouth because we enjoyed Hyrule Warriors. This game is unmitigated disaster on PC, did you not know that apparently koei didnt want the PC users to have access to the Chinese dub, they only want the PS4 players to get access to the Chinese dub voices so they sent out a patch instead of fixing the numerous bugs and issues. The patch only took out the Mandarin voice overs so now Chinese dub on PC isn't even a selectable option anymore. That was the thing that Koei thought should have been the first thing to get fixed. This game is optimized so poorly that it is rated as the worst running game on every console even when it's put in the action mode and on PC it's not even playable for most people. But koei thought that the Chinese dub on PC was the first thing that needs to get addressed....

      I never really had a problem with the quick deaths in GTA IV and V. The addition of a proper cover system, along with weapons that felt and handled better, made it a non-issue outside of one or two poorly designed mission segments. And unlike Dynasty Warriors, the newer GTA games actually take themselves seriously, with a world somewhat grounded in plausibility. You know, instead of being an unkillable death god that can mow down thousands of faceless troops without effort.
      That's not to say you're necessarily wrong, of course; we all prefer different things in different games, and if you enjoy being a walking tank in GTA, that's fine. Just pointing out that it's got more of an excuse to use realism that anything published by Koei Tecmo.

      Quick deaths is not really a problem though. Not in the same way. There are no corners cut there. It is purely artistic decision. DW9 is cutting out content for realism where there is still magic power. Cars handling not like real cars doesn't BEGIN to compare, because GTA isn't Gran Turismo. Cars are better than in GTA 3 (for example). Progress is made rather than regression. Time to kill shrinking isn't a degradation in quality.

    Would love it if you made a video discussing what new additions and improvements you’d want in an ideal Dynasty Warriors sequel, Jim. Would be interesting to hear what direction you’d want the series to go in after this debacle.
    Personally, I’d just want them to deepen the existing move-sets of DW8, plus maybe add a unique mechanic to each character that compliments their fighting style (Pirate Warriors already has something akin to this, and Sengoku Basara has something similar that is even more fleshed out). It’d also be cool if, like with Sengoku Basara, there was an end game item for each character you could unlock, which powers up that unique character trait and makes your character even more fun and versatile to play. There was nothing wrong with the gameplay in DW8, they really only needed to keep making every character feel more unique and rewarding to play, not do a total revamp.
    I’d also like a return to stage based level design, but maybe have the stages be more varied in their progression and design.

      Being overly ambitious to the point of detriment is actually a flaw, not an admirable trait or defense. Ambition is only useful if you can control it, limit it to the point where it's useful, just like confidence. Once you fall to overconfidence or stubborn over-ambitiousness, you have no one to blame but yourself.

    I know Dynasty Warriors has ever been the most successful franchise, but going open world is a terrible idea. It does not work with the Dynasty Warriors formula. Linear levels are a must. It makes the game chaotic and action-packed. Making it open world ruins the fun. Nobody wants to run around for 10 mins to fight one general.

Adding a bit of strategic element to driving enemy armies out and holding territory between the major battles, and shaking up that status quo with periodic time skips that act as "new levels" populated with different army make-ups and grand strategic objectives that can be done in any order, for example.

    Dynasty Warriors the series is basically the Sims 3 of action games. Far too much DLC, far too little actual changes in content, looks like shit and basically never works on PC. Ever.

    • @Zanithos
      @Zanithos 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Actually, the funny part is that the base Sims 3 works amazingly on PC. It's the staggering amount of dlc, paired with how the game handles loading it, that causes all the issues.
      An SSD and a decent modern gaming rig can load up a Sims 3 save file with all DLC it in roughy five minutes, but if you're playing on a period PC (like one that would've been top of the line when the Sims 3 came out) you're gonna be doing more waiting than anything.
      And I wouldn't recommend playing it without a full suite of mods. Like I said, the base game was pretty much fine, but the DLCs added so many bugs and glitches you need them to run it. :/

    1. This is not ambitious. Ambitious would be if the game ran slow because it was actually processing thousands of soldiers everywhere on the map, all doing things. This is...just poor game building. With zero shame.
    2. WHY IS AMBITION AUTOMATICALLY A GOOD THING?!? Last time I checked we don't appreciate it when people try to literally conquer the world.

    • @JojyAsmir
      @JojyAsmir 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Agree on point #1, but there is something to be said for ambition when it is actually present. Just because a game doesn't accomplish everything it sets out to do, just because it fails to be a commercial success, doesn't mean it wasn't a valid effort and a contribution to the industry.
      A game like Spore is a prime example of this; that game was a labor of love, and shot higher than many others could ever dream of. It tried to be a life-sim godgame that took advantage of four or five different gameplay genres, and an endgame promising the exploration of hundreds of thousands of procedural planets. The end result was, of course, unfinished and a bit shallow on gameplay; but to say that they didn't truly give it their all would be a disservice, and it's effect on games as a whole are still being felt to this day.

    • @DeathBringer769
      @DeathBringer769 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    • @Arbron
      @Arbron 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ambition is about wanting to expand on what works and take it to new heights. Unfortunately it needs to be tempered with common sense - you need to realize the difference between what's a good and bad idea. "Let's make the map even bigger!" is ambitious, and also stupid if you don't anticipate what else needs to be changed or updated to accommodate that (more content, improved engine so there's no lag, etc.)

    • @ManoredRed
      @ManoredRed 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @JojyAsmir
      @JojyAsmir 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I entirely agree that, as a player, I would prefer something unoriginal and well done than an ambitious project that didn't succeed; my main point was that ambition advances the industry as a whole. An ambitious game might fail because it tried to overreach, but another developer with the right resources can refine their ideas into a much better game, which wouldn't happen if someone didn't have the idea in the first place.

    Also could you gripe about bringing universal Vacuum to Warframe since you get stuff done, really it has been a major issue for a long time, and the coding exist. It would make the gameplay sooo much smoother and alot more fun when people aren't tied to a sentinel for a mod. Please Jim, be our hero.

      Her recent rework makes her very good throughout the entire game, however she is no longer useful for farming. Greedy Pull augment only works for her, along with her useless vacuum bullet jump.
      Giving universal vacuum to warframes, moving it off the sentinel, or even a mod would free up game play, as people who want to collect things like, ammo, energy, mods, endo are slaved to bringing a sentinel over a kubrow or kavat, plus Warframe is all about movement, and parkour and out maneuvering the enemy, when your out of ammo and have no vacuum the whole stopping to sift through ammo and energy to pick up what you need by moving over it really breaks the flow of the game.

      zamot699 that... sounds like a REALLY ridiculous patent. In fact I'm fairly certain an indie group would not have to worry about the court case... as a court case would require Tecmo Koie(sp?) having to explain the patent in a court of law.
      Any case where one side having to explain what they are in court for interferes with actually doing the court case... usually gets thrown out.
      I know that is how I don't have a criminal record. In order to have one--the Prosecution and arriving police officers would be required to explain what I did in a court of law. They could not explain it.. because well--it would take quite some time. It is almost always a really long story.

      Fucking hell. That is a lot of money to sink into a single mediocre game.
      I wonder if anyone actually bought all that shit.

    They had such a good foundation with DW 7 and DW 8, they could have really taken the concepts and ideas from those games and used them to shape an amazing future for the series, in my opinion. I love dynasty warriors so much and have been playing since DW 5.

      It should be the victory fan fare from some edition. It’s not from 7 or 8, for sure, because those are the ones I played. So maybe from 9?
