After making it to Smelter with only two or three Estus left a half dozen times before he smashed me... I stopped and killed the damn Alonne knights until they quit spawning in. Seriously. Leveled like twenty times off just that!
majula is my favorite hub area in a souls game. i absolutely adore the music, the sound of the ocean, the afternoon sun, the soothing voice of the emerald herald, just the WHOLE THING. oh, except for those damn pigs aka the tutorial boss
I like that its actully usefull. Firelink (ds3) is useful but trash.... Firelink in dark souls 1 is better. Has my favorite music of a hub and i like the design.. But majula overall is the best designed area

It sthe worst change SOTFS makes. The original Iron Keep suffers from too many Alonne Knights and archers. So what does the remaster do? It puts even MORE Alonne Knights and archers. I mean, there's something like 7 or 8 just on the walkway outside Smelter Demons bossroom. That's just ridiculous.
The original version's more tolerable in some aspects, but the subsequent runs to the Ancient Dragon are the _worst_. I mean, yeah, SotFS is worse the first time round, but after you kill that leader, you're golden.
Oh for sure. I don't think I would've fought Ancient Dragon again if I had to go through the pain of doing the original Dragon Aerie again. I think the Scholar of the First Sin is overall the better game with enemy placements but its just a couple of areas like Iron Keep where they make the area so much worse and more painful.
the idea of the dragon Aerie is that the smaller knights are there to make sure you don't sprint past the giant knights. If you sprint though, you aggro them, if you dual the giants and win, they'll let you pass. Kinda like a code of honour, like you're earning the right to see the dragon. quite cool imo

Love how they bow before you duel the giant knights, really interesting turn of events. I really enjoyed SOTFS tremendously and Shrine of Amana was beautiful, no problem there for me. Lots of nice settings and the armor and the weapons, even my character was pleasing! Wish DS3 had the same character creation.
I enjoy that you tried new things, but I personally enjoy the videos in the other format more. But it's good to try new things to see what your viewers do and do not enjoy
I agree with you that the other format is higher quality, but this was a neat idea and good compromise to get the rankings to you all. I don't plan on doing this often in the future, so trust that my normal edited content is here to stay!

I wanted to but every time I tried to make a cut I saw would read the chat and see things I didn't want to cut out lol. I think in the end it's better as a longform video where you can see the chatlog the whole time, even if that ends with me being a bit rambly.

Can't believe Iron Keep is number 10. If you ask me, both No Man's and Bastille are much better. Iron Keep is gankfest, archershit, and feels really videogamey. It really doesn't feel like a real place, which may be super meta, since it shouldn't exist taken into account its placement in the world ... The PvP bridge area looks really nice, though.
God forbid a video game feels like a videogame, eh? I suppose you mean that it feels too much like just a video game level and not something that could be a place in a fantasy world. I could say that about various areas in the 3 main games though. Like Sen's Fortress.
Sen's Fortress atleast had an explanation. It was supposed to be one giant trap, as a last test for the chosen undead. Iron keep is just retarded. Random lava everywhere, statutes shooting fire and narrow passages that serve no other purpose but give the turtles a chance to gank the player. The only REAL problem of that type, one that I actually noticed while playing was all these carriages that couldn't even fit on the street in Bloodborne. Other than that From is pretty good at making great level desgins while not pulling you out of experience.
The frozen mimic was so cool in eleum loyce, loved the whole concept of seeing a bunch of frozen areas then backtracking to find them, was actually good backtracking.

So sad to see heides tower of flame no 7. DS 2 was my first sould experience and this was the first area i ever went to, seeing the beautiful and broken ruins gaurded by these towering knights was an amazing sight. The area is quite small though but thats fine
My fave DS2 areas are the Iron Keep, Shulva Sanctum City, Heide's Tower of Flame, and Majula is my favorite hub in the series! I also love Eleum Loyce, but only visually and atmospherically. Loving this new Demod format with these twitch streams. I see the genuine you coming out once again and it's so great to see!

Oh God, the Smelter Demon was the bane of my existence. Not only did I suck at timing his attacks, but his arena was glitchy as hell. There was an invisible wall about half-a-foot before the actual wall of his arena and all he ever did was knock me between the invisible wall and the actual wall and proceed to destroy me because I couldn't hit him back through the wall. The Smelter Demon was the one and only boss I always made sure to avoid in my playthrough and thanked all the Heavens that it was an optional fight.
Dragon Aerie/Shrine is my favorite. It's aesthetically pleasing and I was actually interested in what the lore might be. Drangleic Castle looks so fucking cool on the outside but I thought the inside is pretty meh.
This was a really cool experiment that I enjoyed a lot and it was great seeing new faces on Twitch. I'm happy I could deliver the rankings to you all in some format before we move on. For the future though, I'll stick to my highly edited content as I think it's higher quality. I hope you enjoy this for what it is though - and be sure to stick around til the end to hear my thoughts on the DS3 areas! Also the DS3 Bosses portion of the stream will be posted on Friday!!

The thing with Dragon Shrine for a lore point of view boils down to what the Herald says at the entrance of the Aerie : "The dragon welcomes you" (or something like that). So the little dragon guys are a guard, and they're watching if you're trustworthy while you proveyouself fighting one on one against the big knights and the super dragon guy. But in the original DS2 it's an absolute nightmare where everyone including the shittone of dragonguys attack you.
TheRealBitterbub tbh I think every enemy takes different times to kill I killed an enemy 4 times an he never respawn a but I killed another one 15 times and he still respawns(estimates numbers)
I liked the idea of Frigid Outskirts. Running through a frozen wasteland when a blizzard suddenly passes through and you can't see squat. It was far better than the optional areas of the other DLCs. The only problem I had is that the Reindeers are too strong, and the main enemy there.

Despite that this is definitely your most positive critique of DS II, I still want to explain my main issue with you criticism of the game, it's not that you dislike it, it's not even the reasons why you dislike it, it's that you dislike certain aspects for the wrong reason. Your biggest complaint is how "ganky" the enemies are and as such tend to be artificial difficulty, except in reality there are only 3 parts in this game that I would count as unfair, those being Horsefuck Valley, Iron Passage and that middle section of Shaded Woods, which I will admantly agree with you on in that I hate those places. Honestly though the rest of your complaints are mostly invalid, it's not unfair by any means, you're simply playing the game wrong and I know this because all of your videos seem to have you using a rapier or a twin-blade, you are aware of the powerstancing mechanic in this game right? It was specifically designed as a way to not only make the combat in this game super fun and allow for experimentation, but to also wreck shit on those ganks, go back and play the game and on your NG+ playthrough powerstance the Curved Nil Greatsword (right hand) and the Aged Smelter Sword (left hand), you'll thank me later, it does wonders. In addition the ganks were also designed for you to take a more tactical and thoughtful approach, you can't simply go in guns blazing like the other Soulsborne games. Now if you simply were to dislike the game because you aren't a fan of that type of playstyle that's a fair and reasonable argument, but to call the game unfair to the player is just ridiculous and you not having gotten gud. Moving on, the level design is hands down the most varied in this game and is also the most intricate and mazy, I could go on forever on why places you hate like The Gutter, No-Man's Wharf, Brightstone Cove Tseldora, Lost Bastille and Earthen Peak are all amazing but I don't want to make it too long, so to be short, sure they aren't as aesthetically gorgeous as Anor Londo, but they are way better in their overall gameplay. I will agree with you that the game suffers from a case of quantity over quality in the boss department though. I've enjoyed your videos, including this one, and I hope you can at least see the viewpoint from where I'm coming from, not saying you have to love Dark Souls II, but I think you should just admit that you simply don't like the overall mechanics of this game instead of saying it's unfair because it's not, it's simply a different game and imo the better for it, it actually has its own identity and isn't trying to superficially copy DS I (Looking at you DS III).
If you are given many ways to play a game and are punished for playing that way then there is something wrong with the game. The only way you can play the game "wrong" is by not knowing the controls
Which you can argue about Dark Souls III just on the total opposite end of the spectrum, it's either use a fast weapon with bleed effect and abuse the shit out of the game or get fucking raped with a weapon that is a greatsword or heavier.
I agree mostly with your point but I feel that the game doesn't offer very good aggro control on a fair few of the 'ganky' areas, most are ok, think about No Man's Wharf, often enemies are in small groups but most of the time they are relatively easy to dispatch and you can draw out a few at a time. Then say Iron Keep, where on that area just before the Smelter Demon it feels nigh impossible to avoid being smashed down by multiple knights at once without spamming bows or other significant ranged damage. Multiple armoured, aggressive, fast enemies at once with decent damage and health can get to be a bit much. I like the idea of bows feeling more useful in this than the first, but it feels in some areas like it can be forced ranged or slowly grinding through enemies until you exhaust the spawns, which takes away a fair bit of the fun. This isn't always the case of course, but personally I feel there are a few more of these situations than what would be healthy for the experience. (mine at least)
And I'll say the same thing about Dark Souls II then, you don't have to use it technically, but it does make it much more enjoyable and more manageable, I should not have said he was playing it wrong as much as he wasn't playing as smartly. It is definitely possible to beat DS II with a fast weapon, it's just that this game wasn't designed for that to be the most beneficial style of play is all, and really it's not even fun playing with a fast weapon in this game either. And the only part of Dark Souls III that is better designed are the bosses, everything else is vastly inferior, the level design in that game is not just linear as whole but linear from an individual standpoint, there's hardly any hidden shit in the base game and is totally lacking of the mazy, intricate and varied level design that was found in DS I and particularly Dark Souls II. All the focus was on pandering to fans who suffer from Dark Souls I nostalgia syndrome. While I do admit that Dark Souls II is flawed, mostly in the boss department and having maybe the worst bonfire issue in the series, I highly enjoy it for what it is, Dark Souls III on the other hand was designed to appease all the whiners who didn't like the last game they got because it was too different for them by basically giving them Dark Souls 1.5, the newer, more realistic and darker version of the original Dark Souls. Hey why don't you give me a reason why Dark Souls III is great other than those superficial aspects, that's exactly what FromSoft wanted you to say, they knew if they made this game everyone would eat it up because it was the game the community had been waiting for after the first Dark Souls game, hearing all the criticisms of Dark Souls II for not being enough of a reskin of Dark Souls I (Ironically one of Dark Souls II haters' favorite criticisms of the game) and all the praise Dark Souls III got for no reason other than it was trying to superficially copy the original Dark Souls, I am super fucking glad the series is over and it should stay like that for good.
Discord's Advocate I hate that enemies stand right in front of the fog door, so you can't get it without dying since you aren't invincible while walking through the fog door in SotFS. So you pretty much have to kill every enemy every time you die, and I died a lot to Smelty. It made me so mad that I quit the game for a month before coming back and finally beating the Smelter Demon.
The smelter demon is proof that you can ruin an ok boss with a shitty walk up, one thing I hate about souls games is insisting you go through tedious areas to get to good bosses, no boss could be good enough to justify not putting a breather room and bonfire right before it.
I'm one of the odd ones who feel Souls II is the better of it's predecessors. It didn't rehash everything from part I like III did. instead II did it's own thing, told it's own story. I love the atmosphere and environment. haven't played BB, but it looks to be the absolute best from the SoulsBorne series.
Just a quick heads-up, the Dragon Sanctum is actually the entirety of the indoor-section of the Shulva DLC... Basically the entire DLC from the point Sinh first lands on that bridge and you walk inside the structure until you get to the bottom of the drop you were talking about, at which point you're TECHNICALLY in an area called the "Dragon's Rest" which is basically just the boss arenas for Elana and Sinh as well as the little area directly outside of each. Considering that, I think it's certainly worthy of its high ranking what with the booby trap/puzzle aspect that was thrown in and complex level design making for a nice change of pace. Also I love that you uploaded the entire stream :D I'm gonna watch through the rest once I have time, I'm loving it so far
The biggest thing I learned from Dks2 was preparing my equipment before walking in to a new area. Arrows? check. Stunlock weapon? Check. Quick weapon. Check. I just kind of threw myself at every area in Dks 3 hoping for the best results
yeah, the whining about 'ganks' got pretty old a while ago, and hasn't come back around, You'd think that with the time invested enough in each of these areas you would have actually adapted. DS2 is designed around group-fighting, drop your lock on, and keep mobile, they really aren't that hard and they are rarely unfair once you actually adapt, rather than trying to play the game as if it was Dark Souls 1. it makes for a fun and interesting challenge once you break the Dark Souls 1 mindset and adapt to how the game is trying to tell you to fight.
I hear a lot of people saying that, far rarer is to hear anyone actually put a qualifying statement afterwards. It's a different design to DS1, not necessarily a worse one, and while there are some badly designed segments here and there, the majority of it is fine, design ranging from adequate to good, you just need to be willing to adapt to how the game is telling you to approach encounters. there are only a few of these gank encounters throughout the game which I'd call poorly designed, (and if you're going to go off on some ill-informed rant about how just making encounters multiple weak enemies is poor design by ITSELF then EVERY game in the series + Bloodborne is apparently badly designed.) admittedly Scholar of the First Sin is worse in this regard, particularly with Heide's Tower and Iron Keep having a few encounters which border on unmanageable.. but every game in the series has its badly designed sections.

In the original game in the Dragon Shrine, the little dudes attack you no matter what. I breathed a huge sigh of relief when they became passive in the SotFS edition.
Silverfang 45 I also love blighttown, but.. really? You liked new londo ruins? Or tomb of giants? demon ruins? undead parish? depths? Sen's fortress? I personally think locations were way better in ds2 but to each it's own.

Ds3's Drang* Armor is the best looking armor no debate it's objectively better than any Soulsborne armor If only it had a helmet... eh just use Cathedral Knight Helm or something
I love the dragon shrine. Because it's setup to be a gauntlet. The mini-knights want you to beat the big knights in order to prove that you are worthy to talk or attempt to beat the ancient dragon. Then you fight that npc at the end and feel really badass. I just love that they bow to you before and after you defeat the giant knights and the npc. It's my favorite thing to bow back. It's just a great feeling level, and one of my favorite things in the base game.
About what you said about the archers in Shulva: You can simply activate the blue lever thing to raise a tower that knocks all the archers off the plataform, this is the game teaching you to use those levers for your advantage, there's another spot later on where you can do the same to a bunch of enemies.
Shulva should be first. It's not overly ganky dude, you can deal with the archers and just generally the level design geometry if you bring a bow or crossbow. Basically one of the few areas where it's somewhat essential to use multiple weapons. To be honest, the whole atmosphere of the area is amazing. It's supposed to be a sort of a fallen city engulfed in poison because of the inhabitants own shortsightedness. Yorgh came in and impaled the dragon, while the inhabitants tried to worship and keep him under control. My favorite area, I love it... I'm just sad it gets tossed under the rug so often.
I really liked reading the chat along with the rankings and such - along with agreeing with almost every placement of course. Apart from Dark Souls 3. e do have differing opinions on that game as a whole, but in essence I feel the rankings and your criticisms were fair. All in all great video! I'll make sure to watch more of your awesome speedrun VODs since I can never catch streams live and look forward to your next video!
Iron keep was one of my least favorite because it was the area I discovered how broken DS2's combat is. I'm partial to big ass, high AP weapons, such as the Greatsword. The knights sprint at you, and this high speed highlights one big issue: lock-on tracking is poorly implemented. When locked on, doing a slow overhead swing to put a charging knight in the dirt causes your greatsword to swing to your left. The cause, as far as I can tell, is that the game calculates the enemy's position when the blow lands based on position and velocity. I had to do the whole area without lock-on or risk my blows missing by a mile, and that feeling of fighting the game never left after that.

Yeah, Heide's tower was the first part of Dark Souls 2 (which was my first DS experience) where I had to actually learn to "get good". I spent about 3 hours trying to get through this part and kept coming back over and over to get closer to the left side of the fork in the road. However, I have very good memories of actually enjoying getting wrecked by this area as what trained me to get better.
So, I’m just gonna throw this out there: I like how the areas were harder and trained you on how to do the bosses. And ganks aren’t bad game design-Iron Keep was my particular hell (aside from Black Gulch and the big bulky guys in Helde’s) in terms of getting ganked. But it’s not bad game design to get ganked. Kite them, clear them out, get better, repeat until you win or some of them stop spawning.
Hey Demod. You're the best souls content creator out there in my opinion mainly because of your passion and humour. I feel like you should focus your efforts more on other games now like you have with Zelda and expand a bit. I know the community wants more souls but don't just produce material just for their sake. It's obvious that you love the series but there is only so much you can do on a game series before your passion dries out, and it's obvious that is happening at least for your rankings (you still seem to be enjoying the speed runs which is cool). Almost all of us will follow you in what you choose for your personality, so don't feel tethered to the souls series. Much love

The original version's more tolerable in some aspects, but the subsequent runs to the Ancient Dragon are the _worst_. I mean, yeah, SotFS is worse the first time round, but after you kill that leader, you're golden.
Oh for sure. I don't think I would've fought Ancient Dragon again if I had to go through the pain of doing the original Dragon Aerie again. I think the Scholar of the First Sin is overall the better game with enemy placements but its just a couple of areas like Iron Keep where they make the area so much worse and more painful.
Imo most of the areas were changed for the better in SOTFS, but iron keep became 10 times worse.
the idea of the dragon Aerie is that the smaller knights are there to make sure you don't sprint past the giant knights. If you sprint though, you aggro them, if you dual the giants and win, they'll let you pass. Kinda like a code of honour, like you're earning the right to see the dragon. quite cool imo

Love how they bow before you duel the giant knights, really interesting turn of events. I really enjoyed SOTFS tremendously and Shrine of Amana was beautiful, no problem there for me. Lots of nice settings and the armor and the weapons, even my character was pleasing! Wish DS3 had the same character creation.

Can't believe Iron Keep is number 10. If you ask me, both No Man's and Bastille are much better. Iron Keep is gankfest, archershit, and feels really videogamey. It really doesn't feel like a real place, which may be super meta, since it shouldn't exist taken into account its placement in the world ...

Sen's Fortress atleast had an explanation. It was supposed to be one giant trap, as a last test for the chosen undead. Iron keep is just retarded. Random lava everywhere, statutes shooting fire and narrow passages that serve no other purpose but give the turtles a chance to gank the player. The only REAL problem of that type, one that I actually noticed while playing was all these carriages that couldn't even fit on the street in Bloodborne. Other than that From is pretty good at making great level desgins while not pulling you out of experience.

Oh God, the Smelter Demon was the bane of my existence. Not only did I suck at timing his attacks, but his arena was glitchy as hell. There was an invisible wall about half-a-foot before the actual wall of his arena and all he ever did was knock me between the invisible wall and the actual wall and proceed to destroy me because I couldn't hit him back through the wall. The Smelter Demon was the one and only boss I always made sure to avoid in my playthrough and thanked all the Heavens that it was an optional fight.

Dragon Aerie/Shrine is my favorite. It's aesthetically pleasing and I was actually interested in what the lore might be.
Drangleic Castle looks so fucking cool on the outside but I thought the inside is pretty meh.
This was a really cool experiment that I enjoyed a lot and it was great seeing new faces on Twitch. I'm happy I could deliver the rankings to you all in some format before we move on. For the future though, I'll stick to my highly edited content as I think it's higher quality. I hope you enjoy this for what it is though - and be sure to stick around til the end to hear my thoughts on the DS3 areas!

The thing with Dragon Shrine for a lore point of view boils down to what the Herald says at the entrance of the Aerie : "The dragon welcomes you" (or something like that). So the little dragon guys are a guard, and they're watching if you're trustworthy while you proveyouself fighting one on one against the big knights and the super dragon guy.
But in the original DS2 it's an absolute nightmare where everyone including the shittone of dragonguys attack you.

I liked the idea of Frigid Outskirts. Running through a frozen wasteland when a blizzard suddenly passes through and you can't see squat. It was far better than the optional areas of the other DLCs. The only problem I had is that the Reindeers are too strong, and the main enemy there.

Despite that this is definitely your most positive critique of DS II, I still want to explain my main issue with you criticism of the game, it's not that you dislike it, it's not even the reasons why you dislike it, it's that you dislike certain aspects for the wrong reason. Your biggest complaint is how "ganky" the enemies are and as such tend to be artificial difficulty, except in reality there are only 3 parts in this game that I would count as unfair, those being Horsefuck Valley, Iron Passage and that middle section of Shaded Woods, which I will admantly agree with you on in that I hate those places. Honestly though the rest of your complaints are mostly invalid, it's not unfair by any means, you're simply playing the game wrong and I know this because all of your videos seem to have you using a rapier or a twin-blade, you are aware of the powerstancing mechanic in this game right? It was specifically designed as a way to not only make the combat in this game super fun and allow for experimentation, but to also wreck shit on those ganks, go back and play the game and on your NG+ playthrough powerstance the Curved Nil Greatsword (right hand) and the Aged Smelter Sword (left hand), you'll thank me later, it does wonders. In addition the ganks were also designed for you to take a more tactical and thoughtful approach, you can't simply go in guns blazing like the other Soulsborne games. Now if you simply were to dislike the game because you aren't a fan of that type of playstyle that's a fair and reasonable argument, but to call the game unfair to the player is just ridiculous and you not having gotten gud. Moving on, the level design is hands down the most varied in this game and is also the most intricate and mazy, I could go on forever on why places you hate like The Gutter, No-Man's Wharf, Brightstone Cove Tseldora, Lost Bastille and Earthen Peak are all amazing but I don't want to make it too long, so to be short, sure they aren't as aesthetically gorgeous as Anor Londo, but they are way better in their overall gameplay. I will agree with you that the game suffers from a case of quantity over quality in the boss department though. I've enjoyed your videos, including this one, and I hope you can at least see the viewpoint from where I'm coming from, not saying you have to love Dark Souls II, but I think you should just admit that you simply don't like the overall mechanics of this game instead of saying it's unfair because it's not, it's simply a different game and imo the better for it, it actually has its own identity and isn't trying to superficially copy DS I (Looking at you DS III).
If you are given many ways to play a game and are punished for playing that way then there is something wrong with the game. The only way you can play the game "wrong" is by not knowing the controls
Which you can argue about Dark Souls III just on the total opposite end of the spectrum, it's either use a fast weapon with bleed effect and abuse the shit out of the game or get fucking raped with a weapon that is a greatsword or heavier.

I agree mostly with your point but I feel that the game doesn't offer very good aggro control on a fair few of the 'ganky' areas, most are ok, think about No Man's Wharf, often enemies are in small groups but most of the time they are relatively easy to dispatch and you can draw out a few at a time. Then say Iron Keep, where on that area just before the Smelter Demon it feels nigh impossible to avoid being smashed down by multiple knights at once without spamming bows or other significant ranged damage. Multiple armoured, aggressive, fast enemies at once with decent damage and health can get to be a bit much.
I like the idea of bows feeling more useful in this than the first, but it feels in some areas like it can be forced ranged or slowly grinding through enemies until you exhaust the spawns, which takes away a fair bit of the fun. This isn't always the case of course, but personally I feel there are a few more of these situations than what would be healthy for the experience. (mine at least)
And I'll say the same thing about Dark Souls II then, you don't have to use it technically, but it does make it much more enjoyable and more manageable, I should not have said he was playing it wrong as much as he wasn't playing as smartly. It is definitely possible to beat DS II with a fast weapon, it's just that this game wasn't designed for that to be the most beneficial style of play is all, and really it's not even fun playing with a fast weapon in this game either. And the only part of Dark Souls III that is better designed are the bosses, everything else is vastly inferior, the level design in that game is not just linear as whole but linear from an individual standpoint, there's hardly any hidden shit in the base game and is totally lacking of the mazy, intricate and varied level design that was found in DS I and particularly Dark Souls II. All the focus was on pandering to fans who suffer from Dark Souls I nostalgia syndrome. While I do admit that Dark Souls II is flawed, mostly in the boss department and having maybe the worst bonfire issue in the series, I highly enjoy it for what it is, Dark Souls III on the other hand was designed to appease all the whiners who didn't like the last game they got because it was too different for them by basically giving them Dark Souls 1.5, the newer, more realistic and darker version of the original Dark Souls. Hey why don't you give me a reason why Dark Souls III is great other than those superficial aspects, that's exactly what FromSoft wanted you to say, they knew if they made this game everyone would eat it up because it was the game the community had been waiting for after the first Dark Souls game, hearing all the criticisms of Dark Souls II for not being enough of a reskin of Dark Souls I (Ironically one of Dark Souls II haters' favorite criticisms of the game) and all the praise Dark Souls III got for no reason other than it was trying to superficially copy the original Dark Souls, I am super fucking glad the series is over and it should stay like that for good.

God I fucking hate the first third of iron keep. All the failings of DS2 combined into one area. AND SCHOLAR WAS MY FAVORITE GAME IN THE SERIES
Discord's Advocate I hate that enemies stand right in front of the fog door, so you can't get it without dying since you aren't invincible while walking through the fog door in SotFS. So you pretty much have to kill every enemy every time you die, and I died a lot to Smelty. It made me so mad that I quit the game for a month before coming back and finally beating the Smelter Demon.
The smelter demon is proof that you can ruin an ok boss with a shitty walk up, one thing I hate about souls games is insisting you go through tedious areas to get to good bosses, no boss could be good enough to justify not putting a breather room and bonfire right before it.

I'm one of the odd ones who feel Souls II is the better of it's predecessors. It didn't rehash everything from part I like III did. instead II did it's own thing, told it's own story. I love the atmosphere and environment. haven't played BB, but it looks to be the absolute best from the SoulsBorne series.

Just a quick heads-up, the Dragon Sanctum is actually the entirety of the indoor-section of the Shulva DLC... Basically the entire DLC from the point Sinh first lands on that bridge and you walk inside the structure until you get to the bottom of the drop you were talking about, at which point you're TECHNICALLY in an area called the "Dragon's Rest" which is basically just the boss arenas for Elana and Sinh as well as the little area directly outside of each. Considering that, I think it's certainly worthy of its high ranking what with the booby trap/puzzle aspect that was thrown in and complex level design making for a nice change of pace.

The biggest thing I learned from Dks2 was preparing my equipment before walking in to a new area. Arrows? check. Stunlock weapon? Check. Quick weapon. Check. I just kind of threw myself at every area in Dks 3 hoping for the best results

You'd think that with the time invested enough in each of these areas you would have actually adapted.
DS2 is designed around group-fighting, drop your lock on, and keep mobile, they really aren't that hard and they are rarely unfair once you actually adapt, rather than trying to play the game as if it was Dark Souls 1. it makes for a fun and interesting challenge once you break the Dark Souls 1 mindset and adapt to how the game is trying to tell you to fight.

I hear a lot of people saying that, far rarer is to hear anyone actually put a qualifying statement afterwards.
It's a different design to DS1, not necessarily a worse one, and while there are some badly designed segments here and there, the majority of it is fine, design ranging from adequate to good, you just need to be willing to adapt to how the game is telling you to approach encounters.
there are only a few of these gank encounters throughout the game which I'd call poorly designed, (and if you're going to go off on some ill-informed rant about how just making encounters multiple weak enemies is poor design by ITSELF then EVERY game in the series + Bloodborne is apparently badly designed.)
admittedly Scholar of the First Sin is worse in this regard, particularly with Heide's Tower and Iron Keep having a few encounters which border on unmanageable.. but every game in the series has its badly designed sections.

In the original game in the Dragon Shrine, the little dudes attack you no matter what. I breathed a huge sigh of relief when they became passive in the SotFS edition.

Thank you for this! I know you don't care for the game and want to make new videos on other things, but as someone who thinks ds2 is the best souls game I was eagerly awaiting the end of these rankings. For what it's worth, never thought you were overly negative or biased against the game. Just had a different opinion from those of us who love Dark Souls 2.

I love the dragon shrine. Because it's setup to be a gauntlet. The mini-knights want you to beat the big knights in order to prove that you are worthy to talk or attempt to beat the ancient dragon. Then you fight that npc at the end and feel really badass. I just love that they bow to you before and after you defeat the giant knights and the npc. It's my favorite thing to bow back. It's just a great feeling level, and one of my favorite things in the base game.
Dark souls 2 had amazing DLC's, too bad the main game while great wasn't quite as good as the DLC.

About what you said about the archers in Shulva: You can simply activate the blue lever thing to raise a tower that knocks all the archers off the plataform, this is the game teaching you to use those levers for your advantage, there's another spot later on where you can do the same to a bunch of enemies.
You hate ds2 because it's ganky but literally every dark souls game has ganks

You forgot Giant Dad: Demon's Souls.
Shulva should be first. It's not overly ganky dude, you can deal with the archers and just generally the level design geometry if you bring a bow or crossbow. Basically one of the few areas where it's somewhat essential to use multiple weapons. To be honest, the whole atmosphere of the area is amazing. It's supposed to be a sort of a fallen city engulfed in poison because of the inhabitants own shortsightedness. Yorgh came in and impaled the dragon, while the inhabitants tried to worship and keep him under control. My favorite area, I love it... I'm just sad it gets tossed under the rug so often.

I really liked reading the chat along with the rankings and such - along with agreeing with almost every placement of course. Apart from Dark Souls 3. e do have differing opinions on that game as a whole, but in essence I feel the rankings and your criticisms were fair. All in all great video! I'll make sure to watch more of your awesome speedrun VODs since I can never catch streams live and look forward to your next video!

Iron keep was one of my least favorite because it was the area I discovered how broken DS2's combat is. I'm partial to big ass, high AP weapons, such as the Greatsword. The knights sprint at you, and this high speed highlights one big issue: lock-on tracking is poorly implemented. When locked on, doing a slow overhead swing to put a charging knight in the dirt causes your greatsword to swing to your left. The cause, as far as I can tell, is that the game calculates the enemy's position when the blow lands based on position and velocity. I had to do the whole area without lock-on or risk my blows missing by a mile, and that feeling of fighting the game never left after that.

Yeah, Heide's tower was the first part of Dark Souls 2 (which was my first DS experience) where I had to actually learn to "get good". I spent about 3 hours trying to get through this part and kept coming back over and over to get closer to the left side of the fork in the road. However, I have very good memories of actually enjoying getting wrecked by this area as what trained me to get better.
If you walk towards the Old Dragonslayer branch the Heide Knights get up regardless if the Dragonrider is dead or not, fyi

So, I’m just gonna throw this out there:
I like how the areas were harder and trained you on how to do the bosses.
And ganks aren’t bad game design-Iron Keep was my particular hell (aside from Black Gulch and the big bulky guys in Helde’s) in terms of getting ganked.
But it’s not bad game design to get ganked. Kite them, clear them out, get better, repeat until you win or some of them stop spawning.
Hey Demod. You're the best souls content creator out there in my opinion mainly because of your passion and humour. I feel like you should focus your efforts more on other games now like you have with Zelda and expand a bit. I know the community wants more souls but don't just produce material just for their sake. It's obvious that you love the series but there is only so much you can do on a game series before your passion dries out, and it's obvious that is happening at least for your rankings (you still seem to be enjoying the speed runs which is cool). Almost all of us will follow you in what you choose for your personality, so don't feel tethered to the souls series. Much love
