I never bought any, one of the pick ups before you get into the zone gives you like nine of them and the enemies also occasionally drop them... I also tend to get through the whole zone by the time I use 3-4 of them even when collecting all items. The whole zone could still have gone without the poison swamp thought and it would have played virtually the same, which to me signifies a bad game mechanic. If I never die to a mechanic and using an item I looted already anyway is all I have to do to bypass it then its more like a speed bump than an actual threat

I just can't wrap my head around crapping on the Undead Settlement. That area is incredible - it's so beautifully designed with the multiple paths and way it opens up and wraps around on itself, lots of secrets and NPCs to discover, smart enemy placement that's challenging but fair, the beautiful views to the other areas in the game... the *only* downside to the area is the optional boss.
Honestly DS3 should have *started* at the Undead Settlement, giving you the option to backtrack to the High Wall of Lothric or push forward to the Cathedral or Farron Woods - it would have been a great starting area and given the game a much more non-linear feel from the start.

    • @Galacalactus

    • @MusicVersa
      @MusicVersa 5 ปีที่แล้ว +118

@@Galacalactus I like the spot because it teaches you a lot about the mechanics and different ways to approach the game. You're given ranged weapons at that point so you can pick some of the enemies off from the balcony. You can sneak around. You can fight the ones at the edges and draw them away from the crowd, and the ones closer to the fire won't aggro. But if you charge in swinging your sword, you're going to have a bad time.

I only disagree with the cathedral. In terms of actual level design, enemy variety and placements it's one of the best of the game. When The Ringed City came out everyone praised how it made DS1 style effective use of bonfires and shortcuts. Meanwhile the Cathedral is one of the biggest areas in the game, with a bunch of secrets and alternate ways to get around, and covenant aside it all works perfectly from a single bonfire.
Couple that with its lore significance and I'd even go out on a limb and say it's my second or third favorite area in the base game behind the Grand Archive and maybe Lothric Castle.

TBH I was under the impression Cathedral of the deep was regarded more highly due to its intricate level design and the use of a single bonfire that you loop back on with shortcuts. I've always considered it as a top 5 area in the base game.
Farron Keep is a guilty pleasure of mine, I acknowledge why the design is frustrating to so many but I love how it actually makes you explore the area to find objectives in order to unlock the path forward. Personally, exploring the areas is one of if not my favorite part of the souls games, and I typically go to pick up nearly every single item on every playthrough, even with the knowledge that the majority of them will never actually be useful to me depending on what build path I go for.

I always walk away with a weird feeling in my gut when people talk about areas in DS3 this sort of way, because I seem to like a lot of the things others really, really hate; or rather, a lot of the things I don't mind as much, other people think are game ruining levels of bad, such as the poison swamps, or the more "annoying" enemies like dogs and rats. I actually really like areas like the Undead Settlement, and the Cathedral was one of my favorite areas in my first playthrough.
Beyond that, I also don't agree with just calling devs lazy, or careless, or whatever word people tend to use, for doing things like the untended graves or the hunter's workshop type areas, because I always end up seeing them less as gameplay areas, and more like storytelling areas.
But my opinion may be just wholly disregarded, I actually find enjoyable qualities out of the Irithyll Dungeon, so yeah.

I feel the exact same way! A lot of people think the Dark Souls III areas are bad because of their depressingness (that's not a word but you get what I mean) when in reality I love how depressing and gloomy the areas are! Undead Settlement is a perfect example. I really liked that area, especially the beginning with the dog ambush and pilgrims near broken-down carriages, and I like how the whole area gives off this spooky distressing atmosphere. And it's quite exciting when you're running from 20 enemies and not looking back to see if they're chasing you because it might slow you down. I really like the game's areas!

Agree wholeheartedly on your thoughts. Yeah I got pissed at the poison swamp, or the Ghrus being kinda op for my level/skill, or the jailers draining your max health, but, in my opinion, it feels kinda childish to say an area is bad just because it frustrated you, or that is not executed well or whatever. Maybe I'm like you, I don't care to the point that I shit over an area I disliked; being frustrated with some level design doesn't necesseraly mean it was badly designed, from my point of view.

The castle with the sorcerers, the little forest with the fungi bugs and stake dudes, the open plain with the two enemy NPC's, and the Crab filled swamp in the center linking them all together. Areas which you can explore in any order. It also introduces like 5 new enemies. And honestly the very first bit in the cemetery is one of my favorite parts of the game, just because of the atmosphere. It feels like you've suddenly been thrown into a zombie apocalypse movie. The dingy orange lighting from the sunset and the sounds of the hollows moaning and puking set the mood really well. Having to basically push and shove your way through the endless crowds of them is suitably unpleasant, but also kind of fun. And then you turn a corner and one of the hollows erupts into a pile of maggots and eats you alive! It's great!

I love the DS3 firelink shrine because of the untended graves While not directly connected to the untended graves that change in music after giving the fire keeper her eyes is actually pretty harrowing. We go from calming music in your hivworld full of friendly NPCs to somber piano music that hits home the fact that “this is the last chance to fix this world but is it even worth it anymore?”

IMO, the areas of DS3 is one of its main strengths. The only real bad area is Smouldering Lake. The rest of them are inoffensive at worst. It’s way less hit or miss than the other entries in the series, so that’s something.

I LOVE the catacombs. Coming in there and first seeing the main hall, and seeing the path far down ahead of you which you know is where you'll be going, watching out for traps and rolling balls like Indiana Jones, to rush across a bridge inside a cave like the fellowship of the ring and do a "YOU SHAL NOT PASS" to a buttload of skellies; yea, I can dig that. There is in fact a lot of epic-ness to it all.
And while Wolnir sure as hell is easy (in a very re-used Zelda-riddle type of way you'll figure out instantly) - besides that - the atmosphere of the arena is actually god damn epic as well if you ask me; having to hurry to find out how to kill him, before he climbs and pushes you to the top and towards no escape. The concept fits perfectly with the whole areas "indiana jones"-vibe, including the very opening of the fight, where smoke from a skull-goblet swallows you in it. The sheer visuals of the Wolnir-fight is pretty awesome too , you got to admit. So, despite being a cake walk, I will always enjoy the 45 degree fight against a skelly giant, and watching his sorry ass loose grip and fall into the abyss as I destroy his bling-bling.

    Undead settlement was awesome wtf
Also I love transitional areas like Road of Sacrifices because it makes you feel like you’re actually traveling in between areas. I would hate going into another zone so abruptly. A good example of this is in bloodborne, the area in between the cathedral ward and hemwick charnel lane. You go through a cave and then a forest area before you come out into a rural village area. It’d be weird if you instantly went into the rural countryside right as you left the city.

Undead settlement was one of my favorite areas in any souls game. Loved the layout, the lore, the atmosphere, everything. I would say the profaned capital was the most disappointing, not necessarily the worst. I was expecting it to be a big underground city, almost like New Londo. It was so much smaller than I expected.

@@joesheridan9451 these really are unbearable, I can't stand the challenge areas from DS2's DLCs.
And in DS3, I agree, the swamp is good and the best they've ever made so far. The poison is ridiculously weak, and it's only in a small part of the map that you get slow. Besides, there is a plenty of variations all around, so if you pay attention, you can easily avoid being lost.
      It's a great, great improvement from DS1.
