LET’S LEARN THE KĀHOLO
Starting with your feet slightly apart, both knees bent, hands on your hips…
Starting on the right: step 1, 2, 3, 4 left 2, 3, 4, right 2, 3, 4 left 2, 3, 4.
Continuing with this 4-count step keeping both knees bent, allows your hips to sway as you kāholo right and left.
Now adding in your arms: your left is out at the side, right bent at your wai-u (center)
Step right 2, 3, 4 left 2, 3, 4. You’re just gently lifting up your hands and sliding your arms from right to left.
Now let’s add in the hula hand: placement again and waving your fingers down, up, down, up. You want to keep your arms straight, emphasizing the wave in your wrists, allows your fingers to move in the hula hand.
Keeping your posture straight and your shoulders back, continue with your kāholo to the beat of the ipu.

I'm learning this while my family is in Hawaii for 2 weeks. My mom is sick so we cant do anything and I'm cooped up in my hotel so I might i well learn the hula!

First of all, thank you so much for doing this. I have been wanting to learn how to hula dance for years, but have never lived anywhere where they teach it. As someone who cannot dance, I will probably have a lot of questions over the course of these videos, but I only have one right now 😅 My question is how do you move your hips while moving side to side? Is there something specific you do with your leg to get that movement? Thank you again for doing these, have a great day 😃
Mahalo princess2k12 for you comments, subscribing and question. To move your hips from side to side while moving, your knees must be bent at all times, not bouncing up and down. As you step right, your hip starts on the left and sways right, and vice verse.
You’ve given me a good idea for another video as there are more tips I can share, but hard to explain in words. I hope this helps you and that you keep at it so th hula becomes more comfortable for you.
