Hula Basics Kaholo and Kawelu

- The next few weeks I will be covering hula basics . This video is on the kaholo and kawelu . Remember to sit and do not bounce up or down. Practice getting your feet right 1st( dance with your hands on your hips) then when you are ready to move on you can incorporate your hands.I hope this helps those who want to learn but can't join a halau for whatever reason. The music is Keali'i Reichel, e o Mai album, song is " Ka 'opihi o kanapau "- so you can download it and practice. If it's feels too fast I suggest doing just kaholo to the song one time through then play the song again just working on kawelu. Next week we will work on 2 more hula basics and I promise to wear pants! Hahaha. At the end of the basics series we will do a full "warm up with me" routine with Pa'u skirt so you can see how it looks. I really like your teaching style. As a kumu myself, I appreciate your demonstrating the Kaholo and Kawelu. These are hard for me to do anymore, I just had my 79th birthday. I learned the flat footed style from my mother, also a kumu, and my teachers were Joe Kehaulelio and George Naope. Mahalo, plenty.

Thank God you mentioned the fact that she has her back to us. I find it very annoying and difficult to follow instructions when the instructor/teacher is facing the class. Back facing is much easier to follow because everyone has the same orientation versus doing everything opposite of what is being taught. Very keen observation. This goes for any dance instructors out there, whether it be ballroom or hula (specially). Please take heed.
You made it very clear how to do the steps. I enjoyed watching you do the dance to music. I've always loved watching hula and wanted to learn as a kid but there were no teachers of the hula dance where I live. Something about that dance and the music really touches me and I love it. I have been doing hula with you every day since the quarantine, and have lost 30 lbs, and inches off my waist and thighs! I love that you teach with your back to us with the mirror - I get my right and left confused all the time, and that really helps! I watch 3 hula basics and "I Miss you my Hawaii" and have actually learned that. Can you do a hula for "Hawaii Aloha" that is sung at the end of most concerts? Any more Hula basics from you that I have missed?

After I had my last child, baby number five, I am having a lot of hip problems and i haven’t been able to dance. I hope to be able to make another video soon may be a full warm-up.

I was thinking the same thing! I have a Caribbean dance background. The lower body movements are somehow easier for that reason. The hands though... I’m lost! 😂

I live in Virginia and my 15 year old would like to learn and I use to dance hula but I don’t know how to teach it like you. So glad I found you ❤️
Now we can do it together and it gives me confidence doing it in front of her. It’s hard to explain to people when they say oh you dance hula can you teach us and I say no I can’t.
They look so confused. I’m not a teacher just a student of dance and I love it.

While I love hula and Tahitian very much , I never completed training as an alakaii or assistant- and I would not do it now because I don’t agree with the spiritism involved in the process of Uniki . What I share is very basic and fulfills the desire in me to continue dancing on my own terms and my own time . Which I enjoy so much bc I have other things in life that comes 1st. Maria Corazon Amante aloha! You can choreograph or make any hula dance to any song using the basics. Remember the feet keep the timing and the hands tell the story. I hope this helps! Thank you for watching!
What is the name of the music?
I learned recently that not all dancers *tap* on the fourth beat of kaholo. It would be step together-step-pause. What are your thoughts on that?
Sounds like a tap. Hahhaha I only say that because the weight is still on the foot of the direction the kaholo was even if the tapping foot is paused. In hula feet keep the timing so I think even if it’s a pause it’s still the same timing as a traditional kaholo with the tap. All schools teach a different way or style but I only teach the way I learned.I hope that helps some. Thanks for your comment I hope my answer is helpful. Take care!

Madame Mim hi there! Actually hura is more equal to a Hawaiian ka’o. It’s a hip sway right and left. The Kaholo is similar but with traveling

Madame Mim I’m the opposite.i didn’t learn the correct terms for Tahitian so I’m trying to find the right name to match the movement to! Hahah

movement maker it depends what kind of ceremony dance. Do you mean wedding dances? Yes I can teach wedding routines. As for Hawaiian god worship or ancestral dances? No I do not teach as they are against my personal beliefs. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching!

movement maker yes there is a lot of action on the mauna right now. I can’t be sure what each hula is about. Most kahiko (traditional dance) has roots in Hawaiian god worship or ancestral worship, there may be some that are not. Sorry I wish I was more helpful but the language and tradition is beyond my basic knowledge.
