- Bernadette Peters's version of Unexpected Song from Song and Dance by Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber in her famous concert at Royal Festival Hall London. I love this song. It is such a simple celebration of love and rebirth to me - a very difficult song that requires a huge vocal range. Also, any woman that can whip her body all around and belt at the top of her lungs, all while swinging a notebook in the air and managing to keep a pencil - which is ready to fall out of that notebook at ANY moment - from flying out into the audience gets an A+ in my book. Thanks, Bernadette ;) You're kind of a Rockstar.
She doesn't "just" sing a song, she performs a song -- with every fiber of her being. That's what separates her from all those other singers.

One of Sir Andrew's most beautiful melodies. I heard it first in the marvelous Cello Concerto he wrote for his brother, Julian who played it gorgeously. She does so well by it.

To stand front and center on a stage and sing like Ms. Peters does is an extraordinary feat. She sings this version of the song with such abandonment and truth that there are no words to describe her performance. The ability to sing is simply a gift from God.

I did not want to go to this show but my ex talked me into it. I was amazed and to this day remains one of my favorites. This song is truly amazing and was sung with such feeling and warmth. Ms Peters is truly one of our greats whether its' Broadway, or All in the Family, or Carol Brunette or with Steve Martin
I got to see her in Song and Dance in New York in 1986 as part of my high school senior trip. She was wonderful then and still is. Thanks for sharing.
Unexpected Song is the best. I love the way the song modulates up and wow! Her voice can handle it and then, that final note. She is definitely one of the best female vocalists I have ever heard. She is so gorgeous too on top of all that. Bernadette, so beautiful. Thanks for you!

So here’s the thing... the success - and it’s unquestionable - of Ms. Peters is that her voice is always, at it’s peak, right on the edge of falling apart... it’s like watching the Daytona 500, or the Monaco event... always waiting for the collapse, the failure, the exit, but it never comes... just think about it... the failure, always right there, expected, but somehow, it never comes and... we are supported, defined, allowed to be who we are because Bernadette perseveres
Though some may find her voice annoying, her persona canny, Bernadette Peters has an unmistakable signature that has withstood the test of the turn of the century. She has proven to the world the glory of the past, and the promise of greater and better things in the future. Her impeccable character and outstanding quality have done little but to prove, that in this world, there has not been, and never will be, a force quite like Bernadette Peters.
I love this song by the wonderful Andrew Lloyd Webber! I've been singing it since the mid-eighties when I first heard Bernadette perform it at The Tony Awards. It turned out to be her first Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and I had the original Broadway soundtrack back then. This song never fails to inspire me every time I hear it. Other people do it beautifully but it really belongs to Ms. Bernadette!
The Bernadette Peters soundtrack of Song and Dance is still one of my all time favorite albums. Her quirkiness just makes Emma come alive!

The reason, personally, is because it's too revealing. There are parts of a woman that only her husband ought to see, and Bernadette's dress here shows too much. Basically, it's a moral thing. :)

That last note sent chills down my spine. Actually this whole song sent chills down my spine. I saw the sheet music for this piece, and didn't think much of it...until I heard Ms. Lovely Bernadette Peters singing this song. Seriously....what I wouldn't give to meet her and hear her sing in person......(dreamy sigh)

I fell in love with this song when I bought the cassette tape of this musical in 1988 while I was in the Army. I had never heard of this musical but I knew of the beautiful and talented B.P.I 23 years later I just saw FOLLIES in New York and waited at the stage door after....I recieved an autograph from B. P. and my brother took a pic of us. I blithered like an idiot. What a wonderful life. Thank you Bernadette Peters and ERICMCHICAGO for this. BTW, I was born and raised in Chicago.

Fantastic rendition, far surpassing Sarah Brightman's, at least for me. It's equally technically sound, while being acted-through. Also, this song is one of the few instances where you really hear that Bernadette is a true soprano.
Ethan A. This is Bernadette’s song, written for the show in which she won a Tony, and Sarah did her version afterward. It was never Sarah’s song. 😀
@@dbrel This is incorrect. Marti Webb and Justin Hayward first recorded this song with different lyrics (When you want to fall in love) as a duet. Then the lyrics were completely rewritten as 'Unexpected Song' and released as a single by Sarah Brightman in 1984. She also performed the whole show in that year. Bernadette Peters first sung the song a year later. Sarah Brightman later re-recorded the song in a more operatic way in 1995.
I think this is the most amazing song that she has ever sung. I'm in love with her and I and in awe of her ability to constantly amaze me.
This gets a standing ovation (and tears!) from me, right here in my home office.

She always does such a fantastic job singing these songs honestly I'm amazed by how talented she is also her English accent for when she said mum and then once she starts singing the actual song in that accent sounds excellent and very cute hopefully I can get ahold of song and dance on cd it sounds like a very interesting musical

One of her best. She could do anything, sing, act, comedy---truly not enough hours in the day or proper vehicles to really display her enormous gifts. Not many with that much to offer---Dorothy Loudon comes to mind, uniquely blessed, with the guts of a burglar. Until TH-cam, I didn't really appreciate the breadth of talent on stage. I'm having a blast checking them out.
