Bernadette Peters's version of Not A Day Goes By from Merrily We Roll Along by Stephen Sondheim live from Royal Festival Hall London. A classic! - I love the glimmer of hope that happens at 3:32.
This is a really good example of what it takes to sing Sondheim. It's not enough to have a good voice. You have to be a good actor. Sondheim's best songs are essentially sung monologues. Sondheim himself often said that he'd much rather cast actors who sing than singers who act.
He has also said that he can't just sit down and write a song, that it has to be for a specific moment in the show. He wrote "Send in the Clowns" because Hal Prince told him Glynis Johns didn't have a second-act song and needed one. He suggested the scene, and Sondheim said he couldn't write a song because it wasn't Desiree's scene. Prince said he would direct it to make it her scene. Sondheim then wrote the song that, as he says, became his biggest mainstream hit!
This is just one of the greatest performances of one of Sondheim's most achingly beautiful songs. No one can do this song like Bernadette, it's as simple as that. God, it just kills me every time.
This song clearly overwhelms her with emotion. After every other performance during the concert, she's quickly out of character once the applause starts. Here, the Bernadette Peters smile is absent, only given half-heartedly a few moments after she finishes singing. I think she feels this song on a personal level more than any other song in the concert, and it shows on her face and in her actions.
I've sung since very young. It's very difficult to sing a song like this bc Often it will remind you of someone you've lost. It'll get you when you least expect it. I've had many losses so I know! Who knows what Bernadette was thinking, feeling? God bless her.
I've never been a fan of musical theater because of the use of character voices. As a trained opera singer, the vocal manipulation always bothered me. Bernadette was always an exception because she did full throated singing. I stumbled upon this today and can't get enough. It is just so stunningly rendered. Wow! Just wow!
How beautiful you put those words together. I lost my beautiful wife 3 years ago. My harts breaks every time I hear her sing it. You can tell by her performance this song brings pure emotion out of her. Grief is awful.
I love how genuine the emotion is in this performance. It doesn't feel like she's pretending or even acting. At 2:25 you can just feel how real this is for her. I don't really know too much about her life story, but I feel like she's singing this to her late husband, and it shows how raw and true her emotion and love is. Purely amazing and touching.
I believe this was filmed after her husband unexpectedly died. This song can be felt by all of us who have lost a loved one. Sondheim was the greatest and he will be missed.
imho, it is SO difficult, when making music, to allow your emotional raggedness in full bloom, WHILE STILL MAINTAINING the ability to deliver the song with the intonation and physical support that great singing requires, AND YET not hold anything in reserve -- to allow the rest of the world to briefly live in the darkest saddest places in your soul -- and yet not collapse into a puddle of tears, BECAUSE YOU STILL HAVE TO SING AN AMAZING SONG -- and THIS version is the best (that I have heard) of ALL her renditions of this song -- it stuns me EVERY TIME I SIT BACK AND LET IT WASH OVER ME. The process is amazing!!! I do love her as she makes music. "Ain't it amazing when God makes you a musician."!!! :)
you see it too. She sings it of her personal loss and I know just how she feels when she sings it...the anger and grief, the desolation, and the inevitable realization that there is only Death to end the mourning!
Frank Rich wrote in the New York *Times* when 'Merrily' first opened: "Mr. Sondheim has given the evening a half dozen songs that are crushing and beautiful, that soar and linger and hurt. However, the show that contains them is a shambles." Whatever the initial glitches, I consider the songs from 'Merrily' to be among Sondheim's best, and this one is perhaps his mourning masterpiece.
I was in a student production of this show in college--not a great show IMO. Never transcends the gimmick (reverse chronological order). But this song... this song is a masterpiece!
Nobody sings that song any better, beautiful and the emotion you feel from her make you linger on every note and word. The time she takes with each phrase make it all the better, I feel the raw emotion in me every time. Congrats Ms. Peters you have my heart
To the fools who go on the Voice and X Factor and all the other trash, THIS is real singing, invested with emotional bravery that only a great artist can imbue: it may not be always pretty or "showy" but it is raw, pure passion.
She really knows how to interpret a (any) Sondheim song. Lives and breathes it utterly. What an amazing and well deserved career she has. I could listen to her all day :)
Not a day goes by Not a single day But you're somewhere a part of my life And it looks like you'll stay As the days go by I keep thinking when does it end Where's the day I'll have started forgetting But I just go on thinking and sweating And cursing and crying And turning and reaching And waking and dying And no, not a day goes by Not a blessed day But you're still somehow part of my life And you won't go away So there's hell to pay And until I die I'll die Day after day After day after day After day after day after day Till the days go by Till the days go by Till the days go by
Donald Steiner. It's been 12 years since my husband died suddenly . Not a day goes by for me, and I talk to him. I have to stay angry at him, otherwise I will kill myself.
I lost my brilliant musician/composer husband, Jim Marentic, 3 years ago, this night. He loved and admired and was inspired by Sondheim's gifts. I have long loved his music. The grief and lonliness has not left me. I cry when I hear this song, as I miss Jim so, and npw am saddened I did not get tthe chance to meet Stephen Sondheim and sing for him and now he has passed away today. I have done two of his shows and have sung much of his music. Just the other day, i was singing "With So Little to be Sure Of" to myself as I was walking down the street. As the lyric goes: "Thanks for everything we did", We are grateful for your life Mr, Sondheim and for creating and giving so much brilliantly beautiful and divine music to the world.I am certain that you and Jim have met npw.
Always have loved her. This rendition where it is obvious she is thinking about her husband and you feel the grief, loss, sadness, and anger and at the end....acceptance. Beautiful.

Sublime. Just a reminder that Sondheim has set out on the table of all our lives to show us that we are in some ways all very much alike. How vulnerable she is. Beautiful. Brava!
not an accident to come across this beautiful song and Miss Peters rendition of it at a time when my widowhood has me reliving and cementing the memories of my beloved husband who died unexpectedly...who filled my days and always will
I don't know enough of her life to make assumptions about what is in her head but it broke my heart to watch her. Not every performer has the power to do that. AMAZING performance
what is in her head is that she waited for so long to accept love and then she had to learn what it is to LOSE it all too soon,as with her Michael! I always tremble for her when she chooses to sing the damned song...it hurts her and I too hurt so much just to go through it all again!
Also the same age (b. 1948) and was lucky enough to discover her at the time of 'Sunday in the Park.' No wonder Steve S. adores her as he does (and she him).
BERNADETTE PETERS! I have watch this performance many times. Bernadette sings this with such passion that it is amazing. You almost feel that she has lived through the pain that she is singing about. By the way that could be true! No matter she's an amazing singer!
I think she was visibly shaken by that song and rightly so...it's a very emotional song. Not a day goes by that we don't think about someone we loved that is no longer in our life. Thanks for the song Bernadette.
Sondheim is an enormous lyricist. maybe his music can be repetitive, but he's an incredibly passionate and inventive lyricist. then if it doesn't resonate with you, that's good and all, but he's good, very good at what he's done. period. the fact that this many people still die over him of course goes to show that it stood the test of time, independently from whoever was his contemporary at the time.
Thank you for posting this. The way she feels and builds this song is just sublime. There is no one else, for me, with this song. Her voice is like a pearl and her acting is just as outstanding. Yes, that glimmer of hope.
In terms of performing, Miss Peters is my favorite. The way she incorporates storytelling and singing into one performance is unparalleled in my opinion, as is seen here. I can just feel the emotions and it wrecks my heart every time. Breathtaking.
Love her rendition. I can not help but think of her late husband, Michael Wittenberg, so tragically dying in a helicopter crash along with three other souls on September 27, 2005, in Montenegro. When I hear and most importantly, see her sing this song, I am so deeply, deeply touched. Especially when she sings, “day after day, after day, etc. Wish I could “turn back time” for her when I think, feel and hear her loss. The five stages of grief, as developed by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and David Kessler, of GRIEF, DENIAL, ANGER, BARGAINING, DEPRESSION, and finally, ACCEPTANCE can be seen here as Bernadette pours her heart out.
For anyone who's lost someone; Stephen Sondheim wrote your feelings and Bernadette Peters sang them. RIP Stephen Sondheim
This is a really good example of what it takes to sing Sondheim. It's not enough to have a good voice. You have to be a good actor. Sondheim's best songs are essentially sung monologues. Sondheim himself often said that he'd much rather cast actors who sing than singers who act.

Not a day goes by
Not a single day
But you're somewhere a part of my life
And it looks like you'll stay
As the days go by
I keep thinking when does it end
Where's the day I'll have started forgetting

And turning and reaching
And waking and dying
And no, not a day goes by
Not a blessed day
But you're still somehow part of my life
And you won't go away

I'll die

After day after day
After day after day after day
Till the days go by

The five stages of grief, as developed by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and David Kessler, of GRIEF, DENIAL, ANGER, BARGAINING, DEPRESSION, and finally, ACCEPTANCE can be seen here as Bernadette pours her heart out.
This is so enchanting, Cannot believe it. :]
This song is made even more beautiful by the emotion behind it =)
how amazing... she's an incredible performer... she's crying and.. keeping all her notes !
This woman tells the story of my heart.....without even singing a word. Miss you mum. x
Bernadette Peters singing her heart out. Happy Birthday, Broadway girl.
So hard to watch especially since her husband has just died :( you know she was truly feeling each word
