Bernadette, wow, I remember seeing her in a certain deli in NYC back in the 60"s She knew the guy I was with Ronnie Miestrich) She doesn't look much different then way back then, how does she do it? And her talent keeps reinventing itself. What a heartfelt performence. She is so beautiful forever!!
So pretty. Linda sang this so beautifully as a young woman. Bernadette sings it from the point of view as a woman in her 40's or 50's. Both beautiful interpretations.
When I think I never want to sing again I listen to this song. Though sad it brings out something positive in me. Yes, we have been hurt in life but most of us will go on; not just surviving but THRIVING. Her voice helps me bring out the best in my own. A singer has to go down to a deep place sometimes to truely be expressive. Thank you Bernadette for sharing your talent and willingness to be venerable while expressing it.
Fantastic performance, great voice. Glad to hear a country tune slowed down to an amazing ballad which tugs at the heart. Thanks for posting this version.
no matter how many times ive watched this video i always tear up. mrs. peters is just a truthful actress and i feel so much heartbreak/loss love or just plain raw emotion flowing from her in this song
When she is in full voice, there really is no one better than Bernadette. What I love most about Bernadette is her ability to break your heart with her vocals and then make you laugh afterwards. I love her!!
This was a stunning rendition of this JDSouther ballad. Bernadette is amazing in her emotive interpretation. I love the Linda and JD versions but this version is a true classic.
Fantasy: It's raining outside and you duck into a little hole in the wall bistro and are lucky enough to find Bernadette at the mic, pouring out her soul for you.
I've heard many artists cover this song and almost all of them are moving performances but this one is amazing in a special way. Emotion simply pours out of her as she sings and shows the song to it's true potential. Bernadette exercises one of the most finely senses of timing by any artist. She never rushes a single note, never fails in her phrasing she simply sings this song in the best possible way. She brings the listener to an emotional epiphany that few artists could achieve.
I've never heard anyone else other than Linda Ronstadt sing this song. It will always be Linda's, but this rendition by Bernadette if lovely. Clearly, she was inspired by Linda, as we all have been. Love them both.
If I'm not mistaken this song was written by J.D. but Linda blows him out of the water singing it. Bernadette does a good job with it but so much difference from both of them making it sound a little off to me.
Bernadette is so mesmerizing, she doesn't need to be inspired by anyone. She is perfect all on her own. The first time I heard this song was by Linda and I thought no one could top her, I was wrong. Being first doesn't always mean best. Bernadette's voice is hauntingly and soulfully beautiful.
Ok her voice and looks are exquisite, she has a great song that is perfect on its face, so to speak, but she decides to bring out the emotional content under the surface. A lot of artists would then distort the basic musical integrity of the song in pursuit of emotional gravity, twisting it out of shape at the expense of the musicality. That she executes her performance to include both is the artistry at work here. She has revealed depths of feeling while, if anything enhancing the musical virtues of the song. This is supreme discipline and control of every faculty.
This was such a joy to find and listen to. There have been quite a few movies that I've caught Bernadette in, yet this is a side that I have never seen. What a beautiful voice. Thanks for sharing this.
The intro is such a masterful way to show the beauty of her voice in its most pure form. Thanks for sharing one of my all time favorite performances of Bernadette's!
I've listened to the Glen Campbell version of this song for too many years to count, and enjoyed it very much. Also, I'm a pretty decent singer myself that lost the feeling in my left hand years ago, so I can't sing it while I play the guitar anymore. Circumstances being what they are, I started singing it with a karaoke backing. It's honestly a tough one to do well, which is why Bernadette's performance of it is so amazing. This is my first viewing her doing it, and it certainly won'y bey last. WOW...! She really understood the song, and provided an amazing arrangement to match. Wow! What a truly gifted lady and equally outstanding performance! And, I'm feeling pretty lucky for finding it, because now I'll be able to enjoy it forever.
It's pretty pointless to try to pick Bernadette's best. There are so many. But I remember seeing her do this one in concert and it was absolutely amazing. So haunting and ethereal and just so beautiful it sounded like something from another world.I would swear no one in the audience breathed for the whole six minutes. By all rights, we should all be dead now.
Faithless love like a river flows Raindrops falling on a broken rose Down in some valley where nobody goes And the night blows in like the cold dark wind Faithless love like a river flows Faithless love where did I go wrong Was it telling stories in a heartbreak song Where nobody's right and nobody was wrong Faithless love will find you And the misery entwine you Faithless love where did I go wrong Well I guess I'm standing in the hall of broken dreams That's the way it sometimes goes Whenever a new love never turns out like it seems I guess the feeling comes and goes Faithless love like a river flows Like raindrops falling on a broken rose Down in some valley where nobody goes Faithless love has found me Thrown its chilly arms around me Faithless love like a river flows JD Souther
Agreed...who's going to say anything about a vocal performance like that?Sometimes I can actually recall this song almost note for note when I remember this performance.
If you like this, look on TH-cam for the writers version. JD Souther is the writer and is one of the most prolific and talented writers and singers on the planet today. Takes a special kind of soul to write a song like this.
first: great illustration of why women's voices are better then men's. shes singing all around her break mixing in any amount of head tones she wants, all for maximum emotional effect, and making it sound exquisite. even a master like Mel Torme cant achieve the same effect cause mens voices dont have that beautiful ring second: example of why theater artists are the best. this song is nice when sung by great singers like Linda Ronstadt and Glen Campbell, but she makes it a Masterpiece
Her husband died in an accident not too long ago. I imagine that a lot of her songs are harder to sing now, They're haunting. I wish her well....................
This was on Linda Ronstadt album. I believe it’s called prisoner in disguise. Of course Linda Ronstadt took every song to any artist ever sang to its absolute pinnacle.
Creative dramatic version from consummate Broadway pro with a pure voice. I myself "hear" it as an Applachaian unaccompanied ballad. Vive la difference.
Its amazing how she becomes so emotionally connected to every song she sings! What a talent!
I'm totally mesmerized by this performance. Bernadette's singing is exquisite and Stephen Sondheim on piano is perfect. Heartmeltingly beautiful.
I believe the pianist was the music director, Marvin Laird, not Sondheim.
THIS IS WHAT MUSIC IS ABOUT -simple beautiful music and an artist in supreme control of her voice
Yes
So beautiful !!!
A masterful songwriter, composer, and pianist making it all possible, and a masterful and emotive vocalist to execute it expertly.
Her very finest performance I think. All the wondrous and subtle palette of Bernadette colors

Glen Campbell did it too very good.

Scott S Venerable perhaps, but vulnerable for sure! LOL!
As usual, she is perfect. Her pitch is so accurate she can sing acapella for the whole first verse and be right there when the piano comes in.
beautiful voice and every time bernadette sings she makes you feel every note awesome version of this pretty song!
Dear Marie, every time I hear this it reminds me of how much I love you and how so very lonely life as been these last 40 years you have been gone.

Comfort one another with these words.
wow...still she surprises me with her vocal versatility. Superb
Thank you for uploading this! So appreciated
Fantastic performance, great voice. Glad to hear a country tune slowed down to an amazing ballad which tugs at the heart. Thanks for posting this version.
So beautiful, so talented, and SO cute and funny at the end ^^

Very well put.
...and thank goodness, or we'd all be left weeping and sobbing the rest of the day. lol
with a voice like that she doesn't need backup. AMAZING!!
Unexpected, first thing that caught my ear was the interpretation, this lady is a real artist
Such a beautiful and sensitive version of this classic song 💖💖💖🎼🎶🎶
She is absolutely beautiful.

Exactly
She is amazingly a tempo as well

Brother James Brown do yourself a favor and listen to the original version by J.D.Souther.enjoy.
If I'm not mistaken this song was written by J.D. but Linda blows him out of the water singing it. Bernadette does a good job with it but so much difference from both of them making it sound a little off to me.
Thanks to J. D. Souther for writing such a beautiful song but thanks to Linda for making it even more beautiful with her incomparable voice.
This song is so hauntingly majestical but it's also beautiful at the same time

The beginning of the song is so hauntingly mesmerizing but also very beautiful
This was such a joy to find and listen to. There have been quite a few movies that I've caught Bernadette in, yet this is a side that I have never seen. What a beautiful voice. Thanks for sharing this.
My fav song by my absolute favourite Musical Theatre singer
Outstanding!
Jesus Christ! This makes me shiver...
Brilliant! Bernadette is simply the best!
that break in her voice at 2.47 rips my hearts out every time :*(
Same here
Absolutely wonder. I love Bernatette!!
Bernadette does tremendous honor to this fine, fine sad song.
ufff...no one has ever seen me cry, thus, I listen to this alone.
The intro is such a masterful way to show the beauty of her voice in its most pure form. Thanks for sharing one of my all time favorite performances of Bernadette's!

She sings it so beautifully with her soprano voice! J.D. Souther would be proud!

this is what made me a fan..she sang this and i was overwith
Just amazing
I'm on board from the first note !
What a beautiful Woman
5:14 gave me goosebumps. SO beautiful.
I was kind of taken back by how great Peters' voice actually is...
Who's listening during the corona virus pandemic???
That clap at the beginning sounded cool, I have the tape this comes from but since it's all blended together I never noticed it until now.
J D said "She nailed it"
Faithless love like a river flows
Raindrops falling on a broken rose
Down in some valley where nobody goes
And the night blows in like the cold dark wind
Faithless love like a river flows
Faithless love where did I go wrong
Was it telling stories in a heartbreak song
Where nobody's right and nobody was wrong
Faithless love will find you
And the misery entwine you
Faithless love where did I go wrong
Well I guess I'm standing in the hall of broken dreams
That's the way it sometimes goes
Whenever a new love never turns out like it seems
I guess the feeling comes and goes
Faithless love like a river flows
Like raindrops falling on a broken rose
Down in some valley where nobody goes
Faithless love has found me
Thrown its chilly arms around me
Faithless love like a river flows
JD Souther
Brilliant.
Sublime
A great J. D. Souther song. Lovely rendition.

No joke, I cried.
I believe it. This woman has a real presence, and it's only altered by her talent (it could also be said vice versa).
I love it honey.
❤

5:04. Wow.
ahhhh...so sad
Creative dramatic version from consummate Broadway pro with a pure voice. I myself "hear" it as an Applachaian unaccompanied ballad. Vive la difference.
i think she has had a harmonizer implanted in her brain. its the only explanation for being this good : )
Does anyone knows if this is on DVD to download??'
I own the DVD version of this whole concert and it is one of my favorites! It was about 20 years ago and is called Bernadette Peters in Concert.
When is this ??
I didn't know it was a lrondstad song
god, how lucky was Steve Martin.....pfttttt.....
No sound Erric
Well, it's not Linda Ronstadt but pretty good anyway
Linda Ronstadt sings this with powerful tears I need her voice. This is OK.
I can understand when you love a version you only love this one because you discover the song with it. But this is incredibly musical
Not her song.
No might have been even great at folk music and soft rock
You make it sound like she's dead. DON'T RUSH IT.
with a voice like that she doesn't need backup. AMAZING!!
