No one sings this song by Sondheim as well as Bernadette. You have to feel it, act and sing and she does that better than anyone. She also has analyzed each note and meaning for nuance. It simply does't get any better.
I remember seeing her for the first time on some daytime talk show in the 1970s - maybe Dinah Shore? She sang a torch song - I don't remember which one. She stood perfectly still in front of the microphone, and by the end of the song, a single, large tear tumbled down one of her cheeks. It was mesmerizing. She delivered all of the emotion in the song. I was hooked.
"-But I didn't sing this song in the show," ... "but I love this song, and I figure what the heck, this is my show now and I'll sing whatever I want!" She's so cute! and a great singer.
Are we really talking about Bernadette's body in the negative? She's beautiful. ALso I think we should talk about what a great performance she gave here.
I scrolled down through years, and see absolutely no evidence of a bunch of people talking negative or otherwise about Bernadette's body. Maybe this was just your chance to make some comment about her body?
Honestly I look older than her, and when this video was made she was twice my age. If I looked even half that good at 60 I'd be happy. And it's not even about her look, she has one of the most beautiful singing voices.
I was lucky enough to be the cellist playing this with her tonight in Symphony Hall in Boston (sigh!!) She is so utterly fantastic. If anything, she sounded even better than on the older videos posted here. I completely adore her, always have. :)
Callee Torres awwwww she is so adorable! she looks like a doll and I dont mean like those ugly Barbie dolls I mean like a different kind of doll,I love her she is adorable and beautiful
I was dumped 10 minutes ago. it almost felt like instinct to come and watch this video. sondheim's music and lyrics can heal the heart, they really can. thank you Bernadette Peters and Stephen Sondheim. no one IS alone.
I discovered this video and this beautiful version of this song just now… And reading your message touched me, although it happened many years ago. I do hope you’ve found someone who loves you, and that you’re not alone now❤️
It just goes to show that you dont need loads of vocal acrobatics and belting notes to show off your voice. Bernadette is just perfection here. Her control is incredible and the emotion in her voice is amazing
and in an instant, this song becomes impossible not to cry upon hearing. Stephen Sondheim was truly the greatest. the world is a little darker without him, but forever brighter for the music he gave us
Thank you for the lovely performance of such a wonderful song. I played it at my mother's bedside as she made her transition to her next adventure. It was a perfect send off. It was peaceful, calm and comforting, for her and me.
Met her last night in Edinburgh, Scotland after her show. She was the sweetest thing ever, and has the voice of an angel, got her autograph as well! Love her dearly
A Broadway icon. Born for live theater, born to express. Thank you for the almost 50 years of growing with your talent, Bernadette. I loved every year.
I remember when I first saw Into the Woods...this song made me cry because it is so relatable and true...this whole play was so amazing. About growing up and life... *whew* I think of my mum when she will finally leave me and I am all alone without her guidance...Such a tear jerker lol.
"Sometimes people leave you, halfway through the wood. Others may deceive you. You decide what's good." "Someone is on your side; No one is alone." Sondheim is genius and Bernadette his best singer.
Lyrics No one here to guide you now you're on your own Only me beside you still your not alone No one is alone truly no one is alone Sometimes people leave you half-way through the wood Others may deceive you, you decide what's good You decide alone but no one is alone People make mistakes, father's, mother's People make mistakes holding to their own Thinking they're alone Honor their mistakes Everybody makes One another's terrible mistakes Witches can be right, giants can be good You decide what's right, you decide whats good Just remember Someone is on your side, someone else is not Well we're seeing our side maybe we forgot They are not alone, no one is alone Hard to see the light now just don't let it go Things will come out right now, we can make it so Someone is on your side no one is alone
I keep going back to this performance. To me it is the ultimate Broadway performance by a brilliant Ms. Peters. It makes me ache to see more live Broadway shows! There is nothing like it and this performance is the best of the best!
A friend recommended I listen to this song this afternoon. I did and began bawling my eyes out. Incredible truths held in such simple lyrics. Great healing in the tears, in the reminder that I am not alone even when the signs around me would indicate otherwise. "Hard to see the light now, just don't let it go, things will turn out right now, we can make it so! Someone IS on your side, no one is alone." Thanks Brad, for making me stop and listen to the truths in this music :)
I've always been fascinated by Bernadette - my first wife looked like her, so clearly, I have a type, but what most amazes me about Bernadette is how her speaking voice, with the "little girl" squeak, and the slight lisp, somehow turns into that marvelous singing instrument. Perfect phrasing, impeccable timing, intonation and vibrato spot on, and above all, the way she connects on an emotional level, giving the lyrics meaning and content. Bernadette Peters is amazing - and while things ended poorly with my first wife, I still carry a torch for Bernadette.
Ms Peters is the preeminent performer, and she is stunningly beautiful and talented! And that dress is gorgeous! What an experience to watch and hear her interpret the music and lyrics of such touching and poignant songs.
This is a truly exquisite performance of this enchanting song. Bernadette Peters is so able to express a depth of feeling in the song that so few can. There is such a feeling of endless space and at the same time responsibility and sadness and everything else. I loved watching her perform this and cant believe it has had so few views!
The newer generations have little interest in culture. Can you blame them? Broadway, ballet, opera, have priced themselves out of their lives. We need culture, but at what expense? We also need groceries.
Stunning...came to appreciating Bernadette a bit late in the game. Really, really late. I had never even seen "Into the Woods" until the film was made. And I am old. Very old. Anyhow watching this performance melts me everytime. I have since heard many of Bernadette's performances and shame on me for waiting so long. She is one of the true greats.
Wow, I already loved this song so much. This is astounding. Easily the best version I've heard of it. Her voice is almost bell like in it's quality in this song. I don't think I'll ever forget this performance.
Sometimes people leave you , halfway through the woods - a reference to losing a parent, she sings piercingly straight through to the heart, erupting true emotion because we are not ever alone, not really. The memory and love of a lost parent is forever.
What is so remarkable is that Bernadette was put on the stage by her parents over 55 yrs ago....and she still after all these yrs still brings it...straight from the heart to you.....
I have been such a big fan, since i was about 3 or 4 years old when I first saw her on the Muppet Show. She still looks as beautiful as ever. I felt really bad for her when I heard that her husband had been killed. I'm so glad she's managed to just keep going and doing all the wonderful things she does.
Thank you for sharing and uploading this performance, Eric Martin. :-) This is such a moving and beautiful rendition of "No One is Alone" by Bernadette Peters. This is my favorite song from "Into the Woods" because it's so relatable, comforting, all-knowing, yet sad all at the same time. Bernadette did a great job with her cover of this song.
VelvetGal5 - Well said, Gal. Noone can perform Sondheim like Ms. Peters. I have ALWAYS loved her. But u really should see her performance as the witch. She truly shines in thay role.
Bernadette Peters is great as always, and this is one of my favorite Sondheim songs, but I also have to say: The piano accompaniment is simply gorgeous!
Oh my goodness...I don't care how many times I hear Bernadette Peters sing, every time is as amazing as the first time! This song showcases every gorgeous thing about her from her beautiful hair to her beautiful face, her amazing figure and her unbelievable voice! What an amazing woman! Thank you Eric Martin for sharing this joy with us.
She is just so amazing...I have at least 30 years worth of wonderful memories of Bernedette and she never grows old!If she keeps singing like this who knows...she could perform the same songs when she's 159 and no one would know the difference...
Such beauty and class, and caresses a note and word like no other. Bernadette could sing anything and make it sound angelic and real. God given talent for sure.
I know this was posted long ago.. Mrs Peters has had a fabulous career and is still going strong. Can never get enough of her and her talent! This is a exquisite example!
There are few performers who can move me to tears the way she does. Talent doesn’t even begin to describe it. Gifted. She had given us her gift for my whole life and I’m so grateful.
Truly talented performers like Bernadette, make the difficult appear easy, the effortful breezy, and the impossible, well, normal. Talent like hers is uncommon.
This is the other song that makes me cry like a baby. I cannot get through the scene without tearing up (watching the DVD). This and 'Children Will Listen' are two of the greatest songs Sondhiem has written. Esp. the dialogue between the Baker and Jack. I'm glad the libretto beat Phantom's. It's so much stronger and appliable to any scenerio in real life. (Without the fairytale characters, obviously.)

I think she stylized a little that wasn't necessary, but since she really actually understands the song, like really gets it, it's tasteful.
Peters is brilliant
Liz Callaway sings Sondheim really well too
I really liked the one from the movie. Emily Blunt singing. This one is beautiful but a little bit over the top for my taste.
I remember seeing her for the first time on some daytime talk show in the 1970s - maybe Dinah Shore? She sang a torch song - I don't remember which one. So does Betty Buckley!
she said she loved me one day and i froze and cried
You are fabulous, Rachel, and very loved. You will be a lovely Maria.
Aww that's nice
Awsome that's great to hear
Look at you sis, the new Maria.
Congrats 💗💗💗
The pianist is doing some amazing re-harmonization in this, much more complex than the basic music
Unless the pianist created the arrangement he is playing notes on a sheet of music. An interesting arrangement but not particularly difficult to play.
@@markbob120 He did create it.
@@notsoyellowbrickroad who is the pianist?
@@markbob120 her music director, Marvin Laird.
@@notsoyellowbrickroad thanks
Rest in Peace, Mr. Sondheim. Thank you for all the beauty you created in this world.

Theres not so many that can say that
He did!
Truly.

She's so cute! and a great singer.
I’ve seen her live several times and she is amazing
I think this is exactly what he intended it to be. RIP, Stephen Sondheim.
I agree.
You raise a good point with that.

@@rollomaughfling380 considering this comment was made 8 years ago there’s a good chance those comments are either super far down or aren’t up anymore
I think the only reason people who be talking about her body is the fact her boobs are hanging out. Hard to miss lol

Callee Torres she's a bitch...
I don't think she has a choice. When the muse takes over, she has to sing. And thank God. What a voice!
Of course she must: She's BERNADETTE PETERS, for Christ's sake!

thank you Bernadette Peters and Stephen Sondheim. no one IS alone.

Bette Midler comes a close second.

Yes. Forever.

Rest in eternal peace and Power, Stephen Sondheim!
Can't listen to this without tearing up anymore. I thought Sondheim would live forever. May his memory be a blessing.

Stephen Sondheim left us on Friday, November 26th. What a songwriter he was. Thank you so much for the songs and the plays.
I miss Bernadette. She needs to be in more movies.
There are few vocalists left that I would wish to hear live. Ms Peters is one of them.
I was at this performance.
Who dislikes this kind of stuff???? This is true talent.
Bernadette Peters is a beautiful human being sharing an amazing message through music and her beautiful voice. God Bless her.

NOV 2023 great treat in LONDON BERNADETTE PETERS in OLD FRIENDS and two theatres down MANDY PATINKIN in concert. Both magical.

Lyrics
No one here to guide you now you're on your own
Only me beside you still your not alone
No one is alone truly no one is alone
Sometimes people leave you half-way through the wood
Others may deceive you, you decide what's good
You decide alone but no one is alone
People make mistakes, father's, mother's
People make mistakes holding to their own
Thinking they're alone
Honor their mistakes
Everybody makes
One another's terrible mistakes
Witches can be right, giants can be good
You decide what's right, you decide whats good
Just remember
Someone is on your side, someone else is not
Well we're seeing our side maybe we forgot
They are not alone, no one is alone
Hard to see the light now just don't let it go
Things will come out right now, we can make it so
Someone is on your side no one is alone
