Our girl is 16 months and we’re ready! I’ve been watching your videos from FAST TTC, through pregnancy, postpartum, sleep, and now potty training! Let’s go!
Its so freeing to not be using nappies anymore, very happy to see you guys promoting these ideas, if more people potty trained at one think about how many nappies we could save from an environmental perspective! Its so great for the dignity of the child too and also as a parent your mind opens to how clever babies and young toddlers really are.
These videos are perfectly timed for our family! We loved your videos when we had our first and rewatched a lot of them preparing for our second. You guys are amazing and I appreciate the content you create so much! Thank you!!
I’m watching this while I’m 24 months pregnant with my second (my first is potty trained already just watching for fun and tips or tricks I didn’t know 😄) and the baby keeps kicking. I think she loves your voices. 💗 I plan to potty train this one earlier. 🙏🏽
This is such a helpful video. I especially appreciate the detailed explanations of why to do things in a certain way (e.g., the naked phase so the child can realize what’s happening and make the necessary connection) as well as the description of your own experience. Thank you!
I have been watching your videos for a couple of years! Friends have been having kids, and it has been so nice to learn what they were going through. Your insight is so valuable, I feel like you're sitting in my loving room with me! I am now pregnant with my first, 6W on Wednesday, and I'm so excited to revisit your videos for myself and my own little bean❤️
Perfect timing for us, we both read the Oh Crap book trying those methods you outlined with our little one. Everything went smoothly and swimmingly in those first few days of 110% attention. Back at daycare now, we're seeing that resistance.
My 24mo old will hold his poop till bed time. I haven’t seen him go for number 2 in so long. When we sleep together he will not poop for 2-3 days until he gets his privacy at bedtime or sometimes nap time. Not sure how to catch him & his cues. Otherwise he is now going to the potty for pee, he doesn’t ever ask me to go, I just bring him every hour and if we’re home, we can have days of zero accidents.
Almost same here, 33 months old, speech delay due to otitis, some mild medical problems(allergy, asthma etc..), he's just not at all interested in potty, but as we start speech therapy and egg introduction it feels too much to add potty training... even though I long for stopping diapers..
Can you also add information on when or what to do when 6 or 7 year old still wets the bed at night! This would be very helpful. Thank you 🇦🇺💙💕 boy unsure if there is a difference between girls and boys?
That's interesting about the kids pediatrician. Mine actually said it's totally fine to start teaching if we want. We just went to her 18m appointment.
Thank you for encouraging me to start potty training. My toddler is ready, but I'm not! I need to pick a weekend to get started, maybe during the holidays. Thanks again!
My question is can you start potty training/night training while kiddo is still in a crib? Or is it better to convert it to have the toddler bed front opening if possible? It sounds like most sleep potty training at that point you would be going to wake them up to go potty so maybe the toddler bed isn’t necessary? Really appreciate the videos my baby is 16 months and I’m starting to think about potty training and introducing a small potty soon.
My 19months old has been showing some sign that she has to go (specifically for #2). I really want to start potty trained her very soon but I’m feeling more anxious to start. Watching this video helps. Thank you for sharing!
Sarah, do you have a tongue tie? My daughter had one, and I didn't want to get it released unnecessarily...but she was having trouble transferring milk. So ultimately it was needed.
Can you please touch on how long each phase lasted for you? Amazing video! Our girls are 4 months and 18 months so we are ready to get one out of diapers 😊
Naked Phase: days 1-3 Pants, No Undies Phase: days 3-10ish. We had to pick big sis up from school on day 5 so pants were required lol. Absolutely had an accident in the car seat that first week. Would definitely had them naked when home at night the first couple weeks because it was easy and they could put themselves on the potty - building some independence. Out and About Phase: through 3-5 weeks (can go longer if you wish). We were sure to take the tiny potty with us everywhere. Add underwear phase: after 1st month Self-initiation phase: for us this started and was going well regularly 4-6 weeks in for our kiddos who started training at 19 & 22 months each. Nighttime Phase: we started this for our oldest a little before her 3rd birthday and she was dry consistently overnight without midnight potty breaks after about 3-4 months. Haven’t done with Bo yet!
Is there a way to train them without them being naked? I don’t really want to do it that way. What is the alternative method? Pull ups? Any advice would be much appreciated! 🙏🏼
I understand the resistance for naked time, but I think the main thing here is that your child can very much see/feel/hear/etc. the sensation of peeing and pooping. Prior to this, diapers were keeping these obviously sensations from being noticed. The connection of experiencing the elimination and then being shown what to do (put onto the potty) happens easiest through naked time. It is also MUCH easier for you as a parent as you won't be changing into new clothes every single time they don't make it to the potty and you also aren't wasting time pulling clothes on and off each time you try to get them there in time. Also, it makes it easier for you to notice when the pee/poop is happening. There isnt a lot of time!! Lastly, it can make it very frustrating for your child to be having their clothes ripped off and on so frequently during this new phase and big change in their life. Removing this extra annoying step can make them much more cooperative! Alternatively, maybe having very light/loose undies instead of naked time would work better for you if you're still not on board! 😊 But pull ups are sooo similar to diapers, children do not know the difference unfortunately. Good luck, you're an awesome parent and you've got this! 😉
Mom Of 7 .. 6 potty trained and working on 7... I set a timer on my phone for about every hour or so and have them sit on the potty ( we have a car or small book to look at while they sit. ) if they go it's lots of praise, and for some kids was helpful to use mini marshmallows or M&Ms as a reward for most stickers did the trick 😊 if they didn't make any we would praise for trying and tell them let's try next time.... my boys took loner than girls did. And this last little one is going a little slower due to my not being more proactive. We used pull ups til they stayed dry at least a week then switched to underwear for daytime.. if they still had night accidents we used pullups a bit longer but it varied by child :)😊 also used easy on n off pants for the boys ( think elastic waisted. Sweatpants) girls were in dresses
My son sat on his potty for pee until he was tall enough to stand independently for the toilet. He was 19 months when he potty trained. So it was a while before he was tall enough for the toilet.
Thank you doctors for these tips. I have an issue though. My Son experienced bum issues when he was a year old due to constipation and negligence at crèche and since then has fear of pooping. So he withholds poop and goes in bits every 15 to 20 mins. How do I potty train him in this situation? Its been rough.
It sounds like there may be an issue with constipation leading to those “little bits”. It would likely be helpful to talk to your pediatrician about helping him have regular bowel habits before beginning potty training .
My daughter just turned 3 and started to show interest in using/say that she needed to use the potty at about 18 months and had success most nights before bed. Then she started to get really resistant to where she would not go near the toilet or her little potty. It became a real struggle, because we are both strong willed and pigheaded😂. Our pediatrician suggested leaving it alone and reintroducing a couple months later at her 3 year checkup. My daughter actually brought it up and started using the potty again a bit. She’ll use it like a pro at Grandma’s house, but at home we’re locked in the power struggle again. I don’t know who’s got more anxiety about it, me or her. If anyone’s got any tips, I’d love to hear them. We’re even doing prizes every time she uses the toilet successfully, and that’s not motivating her anymore, either.
My daughter (16 months) is showing signs and I really want to start potty training but her daycare can't guarantee potty breaks until she's in the 2 year old room (whic has a dedicated little toilet for the kids). Should I just wait to start later on? Or should I start potty training anyways?
Question/Wondering if anyone else has dealt with this: My daughter is 2.5 and probably since she was 1.5 she would poop only when given a glass of milk before nap/bed time and never without it. Here recently she has started to poop without milk specifically but still only while eating lunch/snack. It's very odd to me and I mentioned it to the pediatrician who has never heard of any kid doing that before. I'm not sure if this would be helpful or detrimental to potty training, but I'm tired of the diapers so I will see how it goes. Thanks for the great video!
Totally normal. She might be mildly dehydrated, or a little low on fiber, but drinking fluids and eating stimulates everyone to eliminate waste. I just got a puppy and the potty training videos said that you should take your dog out to poop after the dog eats and drinks because that's when the body naturally eliminates. Weird that your doctor doesn't know that!
Reminds me of carrying my puppy outside mid pee while house training. With dogs if you find it after the fact there's no learning opportunity. Hoping our son is easier though our pup was and is so so eager to please lol
In our experience the 3-day method (or kick off as described here) was way too much pressure for our first born. I will never do that kind of thing again. It worked a lot better when we just let potty training integrate with our normal lives, like bringing their potty with us to the library or park. We had a lot of accidents for about 6 months. I think temperament is way too often left out of the conversation. I also think, while it makes sense our grandparents were trained before 1, there have been cultural shifts in approaches to childhood that make it more complicated than just aiming for a goal that worked in the 30s. I'm doing elimination communication with my second which has been really great and I'm hopeful it will make the overall process easier this time.
Any advice training speech delayed kiddos? My toddler is 2.5 and has great comprehension skills which makes me feel like he is ready and could understand the process, but I worry his speech delay will be a big barrier. Any suggestions would be so appreciated!
Developmental delays can sometimes provide extra challenges, but in no way does it mean they can’t learn! Remember, your grandparents were likely potty trained before their first birthday. If they aren’t yet verbal, it is going to depend more and more on you being consistent and building schedule. Think about it like you’re training yourself. You may also find some benefit from using signs instead of words to help communicate what they are learning. Take your time. Be consistent. Be positive, and just keep putting their butt on the potty whenever they go.
Any advice for stool withholding? I tried to potty training my 2.5 year old, he was doing amazing at peeing on the potty but started stool withholding. It got so bad that he ended up asking for his pull-ups again and we've regressed completely but his stool withholding is still really bad to the point he will scream and try to hang upside down off the sofa to prevent going. He used to open his bowel 1-2 times a day before attempting potty training and now he goes every 3-4 days still in his pull up and he seems very distressed every time.
My daughter is doing the same thing. Shes doing so well with peeing and potty training, but waits until she has a pull up on at night to poop. If we didn’t do a pull up, then she would refuse to go and get constipated. Any advice is welcome!
Why not starting introducing the potty once they can sit properly? I started from 1 year old. I put him on the potty from time to time, while we read a book and have fun. Sometimes he goes, sometimes he doesn't. But still so many diapers are saved and don't pollute the planet. Once he will be able to warn me in time, I will fully potty train. But at that time, he won't be shocked by a sudden change. He will already know the potty what is for.
My kids are the same ages as yours but I’m worried that my 17 month old is going to be potty trained before my 3.5 year old. I’m always looking for potty training tips
What to do if he is affraid of sitting on the potty? My 19mo is evidently ready (even started to use a tub as potty 😅), but we can not convince him to sit on one.

Do you think this method will still work for a no verbal toddler? Our little boy just turned 3 & we casually put him on the potty to create a habit but I don’t think he gets it yet. Also he can’t verbally tell us if he has to go so we plan on using gestures or pictures

That’s where we are with our youngest currently. You won’t reach independence until they are able to do their pants on their own, but they can still be diaper free long before that. If just means you’ll need to help with potty breaks and are a bit more likely to have accidents along the way. For us, being out of diapers way before 2 years was 100% worth it - and we just have to continue to pay attention to those times he needs to go
Tell me you’re trying to be quiet while the kids are napping without telling me 😂
This is going to be the theme for a while… 😬😬
