  • Today we complete the e46 m3 6 speed swap into my BMW e36 m3! The RTD shifter gets sold for something else, we test drive the car with the new transmission, and you find out why I had to swap the trans... TWICE. Thanks for watching homies! Your support has been amazing!
    This video is dedicated to Landon Edwards. Heaven help him get an engine in his frickin BRZ so he can rip and stop spending money on Teslas.

    Excellent video! (and a long time coming LOL)
    I was waiting for you to do it first before I dove in... but I got impatient with not doing any more upgrades and since I already had "all the bolt-ons" I went a bit crazy on the spendy performance mods and got the Active Autowerke Stage 3 supercharger kit.
    Still only 5 speed... but the dyno says 459 whp and 420 pound feet...
    I am actually contemplating a TALLER differential with 3 clutches so that 1st and 2nd gear can be used for more than just melting expensive tires LOL
    Keep up the great content, thanks!

    It's kind of like the M50 intake, it just gives the motor more room to work and feel comfortable. Now, the engine won't be so revved up on long interstate commutes. Definitely a good mod for owners that use the interstate often in their M3.

    I noticed the mpg gauge definitely improves it's position up in 6th gear. That is the number one reason I want a 6 speed in mine. I do a lot of highway miles but in the grand scheme the fuel savings will never pay off.

  • @Sibiriuss
    @Sibiriuss 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    this sounds like quite an experience. I bet it's amazing, shifts look crisp as hell! Also very happy you got rid of that other shifter. While i don't doubt it's good, it just looked silly in a pristine car like this. This right now is the real deal.
    Also here they say 500 kilometers for the break-in, not 500 miles, and 500km = 310 miles so ;)
    Btw for anyone on a budget, you can get 6 speed tranny out of e46 330d, you just have to also replace engine mounts since transmission sits at 30 degrees angle in diesels. And those are bulletproof since they have to endure all that torque from a 330d obviously. So there ya go ;)

    • @dustinjohnson9166
      @dustinjohnson9166 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Unless of course, you live in America, like Gavin and myself… then the E46 diesel was never offered here, and not a readily available option… Wish we got them though considering they handle the most torque!! 👍🏻

    • @Sibiriuss
      @Sibiriuss 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dustinjohnson9166 welp, look on the internet. I have them readily available all around me for about $150. Even with shipping it wouldn't be more than $300 total i'd assume. If you do all the work yourself, with engine mounts, it would still be less than $500 total, with new clutch and flywheel and other bits and pieces i'd round it at $1500 maximum which is still considerably cheaper than alternatives. 😉 I didn't know you didn't get e46 330d though, kind of a fun car... for a diesel lol

      @@Sibiriuss Good info!!! I didn’t know they were that cheap in Europe. I wonder what shipping what cost. Another thing I just thought of… isn’t the E46 330d a 5 speed manual? Unless the 6MT was an optional extra for the 330d?

    • @Sibiriuss
      @Sibiriuss 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dustinjohnson9166 I just checked, postage would be about $190-$200. There might be cheaper options though, I haven't checked Fedex. e46 pre-restyling came with 5 speed while restyling came with both 5 and 6 speed transmissions. I can't vouch but I think lower level trims usually didn't get it, but for example my e46 320d M sport package (even if it's a 2.0) got it. Obviously transmission is not the same for 2.0 and 3.0 but I'm fairly certain higher level trims got it for the most part, while bone stock 330d might not have it. In regards to availability - they are not that cheap on eBay or such marketplaces, people try to scrape your skin there. Speaking of which, e36 m3 3.2 pistons in US cost like $100, i got multiple sets from there, while here they are closer to $500 because of aforementioned availability of parts. Speaking of which, i'd happily send you a 3.0d transmission for two sets of e36 m3 pistons (where I'd pay +$60 for piston postage, you'd have ~$200 for the tranny). 🙂

    • @TreatsOnTheStreets
      @TreatsOnTheStreets  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The spec clutch grabs pretty hard and quick so it is a little more tricky to drive but not horrible. If it wasn't a stage 3+ it would be more comparable to a Sachs. This clutch will hold a lot more power than the Sachs would and usually that sacrifices a little driveability. I've driven other spec clutches that had smoother engagement.

    • @TreatsOnTheStreets
      @TreatsOnTheStreets  ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll need to use an E46 clutch and flywheel because the splines on the input shaft of the transmission are different. I used a spec stage3+ sprung clutch and aluminum single mass flywheel but after using it I would not recommend it. Get a steel flywheel and from what I have seen, DKM makes a great twin plate clutch system that people are really happy with.

    Just getting into these Classic BMW M Cars and Just Wondering in Disappointment Why These 6 Cyl Engines From Like Late 80's and 90's Were able to make Over 300HP (From a NA Straight 6!) 340HP From 3.2L for example, (Albeit Euro Versions). But seems like no one Can even Achieve the same Performance from today's 6Cyl's Engines W/O some kind of Forced induction Even with all Our Advanced and Modern technologies!.. I know the Major issues back then was putting all that Power to the ground efficiently with the technology available then.. So that got Me wondering, If that 3.2L engine really Made 340HP (Which is still a lot of Power in My Opinion even in todays standards) that got Me wondering. Since Modern Automatic Transmissions are Almost As good And Arguably Shifts Better than Manuals, Is it possible to Mate say that High Output 340HP NA Straight 6 engine to a Modern 6, 7, or 8 speed Automatic Transmission? I know it sounds wild, but Wondering if it's ever been done or if its even possible... ???

    I bought a e46 m3 6 speed from Ebay and end up finding out that it was fully build for for track day with only 71,865 miles on it just for $1000

      Those engines are so expensive in the US. Makes more sense to swap an s54. I'd rather buy a complete Euro m3 and ship it here. Now that's an idea

    For the word "sachs" just use the sounds of saying Juan, put the J sound in between sa and the s, and you have the right pronunciation

      No improvement in city driving mpg and that's pretty much all I have done breaking in this clutch. I anticipate that with lower cruising rpm the highway mileage will be better though.

    you could have probably just put a small screwdriver or something in then and folded that seal out, it was just folded in by the looks of it

    • @frontspring1
      @frontspring1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah stick a metal object in a soft rubber seal.if the seal folded over that means the garter spring popped off and will leak either way.

      @TreatsOnTheStreets  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish something like that would have worked but nope. The spring did pop off and the seal was screwed.

      Saw an e36 M3 sell on BaT with over 200k miles for 20k but it was clean title in great condition and had Vaders.

      @@TreatsOnTheStreets Yes, the guy was asking too much for it. $15k would have been about right if it had a clean title.

    E46 M3 transmissions are good to hold power. But have terrible synchros. And are not rebuildable.

      It's true! Gotta treat em nice on the shifts and change the fluid often. The gs6 53bz is probably a better swap option. It's just heavy and has long gears for these n/a cars.
